Applications Of Evidence Theory To High-Consequence Systems Safety, Christina Marie Deffenbaugh
Applications Of Evidence Theory To High-Consequence Systems Safety, Christina Marie Deffenbaugh
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Issues linked to abnormal environments (like high-consequence systems safety, e.g., nuclear weapon components, bridges, apartment buildings, etc.) may have insufficient information to use either classical statistical methods or Bayesian approaches for calculating associated probabilistic risks, so there is often a requirement for another method that can deal with a low-information situation to obtain a risk assessment. Belief/plausibility measures of uncertainty from A. P. Dempster and G. Shafer’s Evidence Theory is one such method. This thesis has two goals. First, a brief discussion on belief/plausibility measures as an application of Evidence Theory will familiarize the audience with its history and how …
Zeta Function Regularization And Its Relationship To Number Theory, Stephen Wang
Zeta Function Regularization And Its Relationship To Number Theory, Stephen Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the "path integral" formulation of quantum mechanics is both highly intuitive and far reaching, the path integrals themselves often fail to converge in the usual sense. Richard Feynman developed regularization as a solution, such that regularized path integrals could be calculated and analyzed within a strictly physics context. Over the past 50 years, mathematicians and physicists have retroactively introduced schemes for achieving mathematical rigor in the study and application of regularized path integrals. One such scheme was introduced in 2007 by the mathematicians Klaus Kirsten and Paul Loya. In this thesis, we reproduce the Kirsten and Loya approach to …

How Risk-Related Statistics, As Reported In News And Social Media, Are Linked To The Use Of The Public Transit System, Prashiddhi Pokhrel
Thinking Matters Symposium
Due to the pandemic, people have started relying more on televisions, news, social media, and other news outlets for guidance. Moreover, with the increasing amount of news, data, and information there is also an increase in the amount of misleading statistics. People’s opinions and decisions significantly depend on the data, statistics, and information that they are exposed to, as well as their sources. For this project, we want to look at how information and its sources are affecting the decision made by the general public for the usage of the Portland Transit System. It is very important to know why …
Markov Chains And Their Applications, Fariha Mahfuz
Markov Chains And Their Applications, Fariha Mahfuz
Math Theses
Markov chain is a stochastic model that is used to predict future events. Markov chain is relatively simple since it only requires the information of the present state to predict the future states. In this paper we will go over the basic concepts of Markov Chain and several of its applications including Google PageRank algorithm, weather prediction and gamblers ruin.
We examine on how the Google PageRank algorithm works efficiently to provide PageRank for a Google search result. We also show how can we use Markov chain to predict weather by creating a model from real life data.

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook
Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in the genome where one base pair can differ between individuals.1 SNPs occur throughout the genome and can correlate to a disease-state if they occur in a functional region of DNA.1According to the central dogma of molecular biology, any variation in the DNA sequence will have a direct effect on the RNA sequence and will potentially alter the identity or conformation of a protein product. A single RNA molecule, due to intramolecular base pairing, can acquire a plethora of 3-D conformations that are described by its structural ensemble. One SNP, rs12477830, which …

The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry
The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry
Senior Honors Theses
In 1906, the Russian probabilist A.A. Markov proved that the independence of a sequence of random variables is not a necessary condition for a law of large numbers to exist on that sequence. Markov's sequences -- today known as Markov chains -- touch several deep results in dynamical systems theory and have found wide application in bibliometrics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and statistical mechanics. After developing the appropriate background, we prove a modern formulation of the law of large numbers (fundamental theorem) for simple countable Markov chains and develop an elementary notion of ergodicity. Then, we apply these chain convergence results …

We propose a new four-parameter lifetime model with flexible hazard rate called the Burr XII Power Cauchy (BXII-PC) distribution. We derive the BXII-PC distribution via (i) the T-X family technique and (ii) nexus between the exponential and gamma variables. The new proposed distribution is flexible as it has famous sub-models such as Burr XII-half Cauchy, Lomax-power Cauchy, Lomax-half Cauchy, Log-logistic-power Cauchy, log-logistic-half Cauchy. The failure rate function for the BXII-PC distribution is flexible as it can accommodate various shapes such as the modified bathtub, inverted bathtub, increasing, decreasing; increasing-decreasing and decreasing-increasing-decreasing. Its density function can take shapes such as exponential, …
Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa
Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Here we present the entropic dynamics formalism for networks. That is, a framework for the dynamics of graphs meant to represent a network derived from the principle of maximum entropy and the rate of transition is obtained taking into account the natural information geometry of probability distributions. We apply this framework to the Gibbs distribution of random graphs obtained with constraints on the node connectivity. The information geometry for this graph ensemble is calculated and the dynamical process is obtained as a diffusion equation. We compare the steady state of this dynamics to degree distributions found on real-world networks.

Image analysis is a useful technique to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment for weed control. In this study, we address two practical challenges in the image analysis. First, it is challenging to accurately quantify the efficacy of a treatment when an entire experimental unit is not affected by the treatment. Second, RGB codes, which can be used to identify weed growth in the image analysis, may not be stable due to various surrounding factors, human errors, and unknown reasons. To address the former challenge, the technique of image segmentation is considered. To address the latter challenge, the proportion of …
Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Markov Switching, Po-Han Hsu
Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Markov Switching, Po-Han Hsu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is devoted to the study of three-dimensional (regularized) stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with Markov switching. A Markov chain is introduced into the noise term to capture the transitions from laminar to turbulent flow, and vice versa. The existence of the weak solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis) is shown by studying the martingale problem posed by it. This together with the pathwise uniqueness yields existence of the unique strong solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis). The existence and uniqueness of a stationary measure is established when the noise terms are additive and autonomous. Certain exit time estimates …

In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. We verify the potentiality of the BXII-ME model via monthly actual taxes revenue and fatigue …

This paper presents a modeling and uncertainty quantification (UQ) study of the photoelectron sheath near the lunar surface. A fully kinetic 3-D finite-difference (FD) particle-in-cell (PIC) code is utilized to simulate the plasma interaction near the lunar surface and the resulting photoelectron sheath. For the uncertainty quantification analysis, this FD-PIC code is treated as a black box providing high-fidelity quantities of interest, which are also used to construct efficient reduced-order models to perform UQ analysis. 1-D configuration is chosen to present the analytic sheath solution as well as to demonstrate the procedure and capability of the UQ analysis.

This paper presents a modeling and simulation study of the photoelectron sheath near uneven lunar surface. A fully kinetic 3-D finite-difference (FD) particle-in-cell (PIC) code is utilized to simulate the plasma interaction with local uneven surface terrain on the lunar surface in 2-D photoelectron sheaths. The code is first validated using a 1-D plasma charging and sheath problem by comparing with a semi-analytic solution. Good agreement is obtained. The 2-D FD-PIC simulations present the distributions of electric potential and charged species densities near the uneven lunar surface. It shows that the surface potential is highly influenced by the exposure to …

Before computers, military tacticians and government agents had to rely on pencil-and-paper methods to encrypt information. For agents that want to use low-tech options in order to minimize their digital footprint, non-computerized ciphers are an essential component of their toolbox. Still, the presence of computers limits the pool of effective hand ciphers. If a cipher is not unpredictable enough, then a computer will easily be able to break it. There are 52! ≈ 2^225.58 ways to mix a deck of cards. If each deck order is a key, this means that there are 52! ≈ 2^225.58 different ways to encrypt …

Stokes-Darcy System, Small-Darcy-Number Behaviour And Related Interfacial Conditions, Wenqi Lyu, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that the Stokes-Darcy system, which governs flows through adjacent porous and pure-fluid domains in the two-domain approach without forced filtration, can be recovered from the Helmholtz minimal dissipation principle. While the continuity of normal velocity across the interface is imposed explicitly for mass conservation, only the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones (BJSJ) interface boundary condition is imposed implicitly, and the balance of the normal-force interface boundary condition appears naturally in the variational process. This set of interface boundary conditions is well-accepted in the mathematics community. We show that these interfacial boundary conditions, at the physically important small-Darcy-number regime, are consistent with continuity …
On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge
On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge
Books/Book chapters
The paper introduces and discusses the evolution equation, and, based exclusively on this equation, considers random walk models for the time series available on the daily confirmed Covid-19 cases for different countries. It is shown that a conventional random walk model is not consistent with the current global pandemic time series data, which exhibits non-ergodic properties. A self-affine random walk field model is investigated, derived from the evolutionary equation for a specified memory function which provides the non-ergodic fields evident in the available Covid-19 data. This is based on using a spectral scaling relationship of the type 1/ωα where ω …

A Unified Approach For Constructing Confidence Intervals And Hypothesis Tests Using H-Function, Weizhen Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We introduce a general method, named the h-function method, to unify the constructions of level-a exact test and 1-a exact confidence interval. Using this method, any confidence interval is improved as follows: i) an approximate interval, including a point estimator, is modified to an exact interval; ii) an exact interval is refined to be an interval that is a subset of the previous one. Two real datasets are used to illustrate the method.

Coloring Permutation-Gain Graphs, Daniel Slilaty
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Correspondence colorings of graphs were introduced in 2018by Dvoˇr ́ak and Postle as a generalization of list colorings of graphswhich generalizes ordinary graph coloring. Kim and Ozeki observed thatcorrespondence colorings generalize various notions of signed-graph col-orings which again generalizes ordinary graph colorings. In this notewe state how correspondence colorings generalize Zaslavsky’s notionof gain-graph colorings and then formulate a new coloring theory ofpermutation-gain graphs that sits between gain-graph coloring and cor-respondence colorings. Like Zaslavsky’s gain-graph coloring, our newnotion of coloring permutation-gain graphs has well defined chromaticpolynomials and lifts to colorings of the regular covering graph of apermutation-gain graph
Comparison Of Software Packages For Detecting Differentially Expressed Genes From Single-Sample Rna-Seq Data, Rong Zhou
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) has rapidly become the tool in many genome-wide transcriptomic studies. It provides a way to understand the RNA environment of cells in different physiological or pathological states to determine how cells respond to these changes. RNA-seq provides quantitative information about the abundance of different RNA species present in a given sample. If the difference or change observed in the read counts or expression level between two experimental conditions is statistically significant, the gene is declared as differentially expressed. A large number of methods for detecting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with RNA-seq have been developed, such as the methods …

Neither “Post-War” Nor Post-Pregnancy Paranoia: How America’S War On Drugs Continues To Perpetuate Disparate Incarceration Outcomes For Pregnant, Substance-Involved Offenders, Becca S. Zimmerman
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis investigates the unique interactions between pregnancy, substance involvement, and race as they relate to the War on Drugs and the hyper-incarceration of women. Using ordinary least square regression analyses and data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, I examine if (and how) pregnancy status, drug use, race, and their interactions influence two length of incarceration outcomes: sentence length and amount of time spent in jail between arrest and imprisonment. The results collectively indicate that pregnancy decreases length of incarceration outcomes for those offenders who are not substance-involved but not evenhandedly -- benefitting white …

The Pythagorean Win-Loss formula can be effectively used to estimate winning percentages for sporting events. This formula was initially developed by baseball statistician Bill James and later was extended by other researchers to sports such as football, basketball, and ice hockey. Although one can calculate actual winning percentages based on the outcomes of played games, that approach does not take into account the margin of victory. The key benefit of the Pythagorean formula is its utilization of actual average runs scored and actual average runs allowed. This article presents the application of the Pythagorean Win-Loss formula to two different types …

A Class Of Copula-Based Bivariate Poisson Time Series Models With Applications, Mohammed Alqawba, Dimuthu Fernando, Norou Diawara
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
A class of bivariate integer-valued time series models was constructed via copula theory. Each series follows a Markov chain with the serial dependence captured using copula-based transition probabilities from the Poisson and the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) margins. The copula theory was also used again to capture the dependence between the two series using either the bivariate Gaussian or “t-copula” functions. Such a method provides a flexible dependence structure that allows for positive and negative correlation, as well. In addition, the use of a copula permits applying different margins with a complicated structure such as the ZIP distribution. Likelihood-based inference was …

Count data with excessive zeros are ubiquitous in healthcare, medical, and scientific studies. There are numerous articles that show how to fit Poisson and other models which account for the excessive zeros. However, in many situations, besides zero, the frequency of another count k tends to be higher in the data. The zero- and k-inflated Poisson distribution model (ZkIP) is appropriate in such situations The ZkIP distribution essentially is a mixture distribution of Poisson and degenerate distributions at points zero and k. In this article, we study the fundamental properties of this mixture distribution. Using stochastic representation, we …

We introduce a new distribution, so called A new generalized modified Weibull (NGMW) distribution. Various structural properties of the distribution are obtained in terms of Meijer’s G–function, such as moments, moment generating function, conditional moments, mean deviations, order statistics and maximum likelihood estimators. The distribution exhibits a wide range of shapes with varying skewness and assumes all possible forms of hazard rate function. The NGMW distribution along with other distributions are fitted to two sets of data, arising in hydrology and in reliability. It is shown that the proposed distribution has a superior performance among the compared distributions as …
