High-Energy Effective Action From Scattering Of Qcd Shock Waves, Ian Balitsky
High-Energy Effective Action From Scattering Of Qcd Shock Waves, Ian Balitsky
Physics Faculty Publications
At high energies, the relevant degrees of freedom are Wilson lines--infinite gauge links ordered along straight lines collinear to the velocities of colliding particles. The effective action for these Wilson lines is determined by the scattering of QCD shock waves. I develop the symmetric expansion of the effective action in powers of strength of one of the shock waves and calculate the leading term of the series. The corresponding first-order effective action, symmetric with respect to projectile and target, includes both up and down fan diagrams and pomeron loops

Lattice Quantum Algorithm For The Schrodinger Wave Equation In 2+1 Dimensions With A Demonstration By Modeling Soliton Instabilities, Jeffrey Yepez, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A lattice-based quantum algorithm is presented to model the non-linear Schrödinger-like equations in 2 + 1 dimensions. In this lattice-based model, using only 2 qubits per node, a sequence of unitary collide (qubit-qubit interaction) and stream (qubit translation) operators locally evolve a discrete field of probability amplitudes that in the long-wavelength limit accurately approximates a non-relativistic scalar wave function. The collision operator locally entangles pairs of qubits followed by a streaming operator that spreads the entanglement throughout the two dimensional lattice. The quantum algorithmic scheme employs a non-linear potential that is proportional to the moduli square of the wave function. …

We report on the first measurement of exclusive Ξ-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in 𝛾p → K+K+Ξ- for 3.2 < E𝛾 < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(𝛾,K+K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground state Ξ-(1321)1/2+ and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We also have strong evidence for the first excited state Ξ-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Ξ's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Ξ5- and Ξ5+ …

Inspired by recent measurements with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, we perform a self-consistent analysis of world data on the proton structure function g1 in the range 0.17 < Q2 < 30 (GeV/c)2. We compute for the first time low-order moments of g, and study their evolution from small to large values of Q2. The analysis includes the latest data on both the unpolarized inclusive cross sections and the ratio R = σ L/σT from Jefferson Lab, as well as a new model for the transverse asymmetry A2 in the resonance region. The contributions of …

We perform a global analysis of all available spin-dependent proton structure function data, covering a large range of Q2, 1 ⩽ Q2 ⩽ 30 GeV2, and calculate the lowest moment of the g1 structure function as a function of Q2. From the Q2 dependence of the lowest moment we extract matrix elements of twist-4 operators, and determine the color electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton to be XE= 0.026 ± 0.015(stat) ± 0.0210.024 (sys) and XB= -0.013 ∓ 0.007(stat) ∓ 0.010 0.012(sys), respectively.

From Guts To God: Credulity, Postmodernism, And Contemporary Physics, Michael Hardin
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[Editors' Introduction]
In an attempt to remove one of the major misunderstandings made by individuals in the humanities about contemporary physics, the issue of incredulity, this essay examines Lyotard's The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge against contemporary and twentieth-century theories and discoveries in physics. One of the best arguments against incredulity is the frequent use of god as metaphor within physics. In Fashionable Nonsense: Postmodern Intellectuals' Abuse of Science, Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont, two physicists, argue that the use of metaphor is one of the characteristics of postmodern science; this essay concludes with a discussion of those elements …

Nearly complete angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section have been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector and the tagged photon beam at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10°–160°. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well described by the nonperturbative quark gluon string model.

The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons. Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic ranges, have been found to be in reasonable agreement with the data.

We extract the Bjorken integral 𝚪1p-n in the range 0.17 < Q2 <1.10 GeV2 from inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized protons, deuterons, and 3He, for the region in which the integral is dominated by nucleon resonances. These data bridge the domains of the hadronic and partonic descriptions of the nucleon. In combination with earlier measurements at higher Q2, we extract the nonsinglet twist-4 matrix element f2.

High-statistics cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reactions γ+p → K++ Λ and γ+p→K++ Σ0 have been measured at CLAS for center-of-mass energies between 1.6 and 2.3 GeV. In the K+Λ channel we confirm a resonance-like structure near W = 1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles. Our data show more complex s- and u- channel behavior than previously seen, since structure is also present at forward angles, but not at central angles. The position and width change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is playing a role. Large positive Λ polarization at …

We report the first evidence for a nonzero beam-spin azimuthal asymmetry in the electroproduction of positive pions in the deep-inelastic kinematic region. Data for the reaction e→pe'π+X have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 4.3 GeV with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The amplitude of the sin ᵠ modulation increases with the momentum of the pion relative to the virtual photon, z. The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from measurements of the →d( →e, e'n)p reaction for quasielastic kinematics. Polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized deuterated ammonia (15ND3) target in which the deuteron polarization was perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle detector. We find GnE =0.0526 ± 0.0033(stat) ± 0.0026(sys) and 0.0454 ± 0.0054 ± 0.0037 at Q2=0.5 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2, respectively.

The cross section of heavy-ion collisions is represented as a double functional integral with the saddle point being the classical solution of the Yang-Mills equations with boundary conditions/sources in the form of two shock waves corresponding to the two colliding ions. I develop the expansion of this classical solution in powers of the commutator of the Wilson lines describing the colliding particles and calculate the first two terms of the expansion.

The first measurements of the transferred polarization for the exclusive →ep → e'K+ →Λ over right arrow reaction have been performed at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS spectrometer. A 2.567 GeV beam was used to measure the hyperon polarization over Q2 from 0.3 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2, W from 1.6 to 2.15 GeV, and over the full K+ center-of-mass angular range. Comparison with predictions of hadrodynamic models indicates strong sensitivity to the underlying resonance contributions. We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon resonance region (W <2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)2 with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional range of Q2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data at fixed Q2 over the significant x interval. From these data we extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we studied the Q2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q2), in order to estimate higher twist …2.5>

The cross section for the reaction ep→ e'pπ+π- was measured in the resonance region for 1.4 2 < 1.5 GeV2/c2using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The data show resonant structures not visible in previous experiments. The comparison of our data to a phenomenological prediction using available information on N* and Δ states shows an evident discrepancy. A better description of the data is obtained either by a sizable change of the properties of the P13(1720) resonance or by introducing a new baryon state, not reported in published analyses.

Differential cross sections for γp→ηp have been measured with tagged real photons for incident photon energies from 0.75 to 1.95 GeV. Mesons were identified by missing mass reconstruction using kinematical information for protons scattered in the production process. The data provide the first extensive angular distribution measurements for the process above W = 1.75 GeV. Comparison with preliminary results from a constituent quark model support the suggestion that a third S11 resonance with mass ∼1.8 GeV couples to the ηN channel.

Atomic hydrogen cleaning of the InP(100) surface has been investigated using quantitative reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The quantum efficiency of the surface when activated to negative electron affinity was correlated with surface morphology. The electron diffraction patterns showed that hydrogen cleaning is effective in removing surface contaminants, leaving a clean, ordered, and (2×4)-reconstructed surface. After activation to negative electron affinity, a quantum efficiency of ∼6% was produced in response to photoactivation at 632 nm. Secondary electron emission from the hydrogen-cleaned InP(100)-(2×4) surface was measured and correlated to the quantum efficiency. The morphology of the vicinal InP(100) surface was investigated using …

Coherent-Path Model For Nuclear Resonant Scattering Of Gamma Radiation From Nuclei Excited By Synchrotron Radiation, Gilbert R. Hoy, Jos Odeurs, Romain Coussement

Previous theoretical descriptions of nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation have been based on the semiclassical optical model or on several quantum mechanical models. These models are fine but do not give a clear physical picture of all the processes. The theory presented here gives a clear physical picture of all the relevant aspects of nuclear resonant scattering. The model treats the nuclear resonant sample as a one-dimensional chain of "effective" nuclei. However, the model is deceptive. It only appears to be one dimensional. It actually treats the sample as a series of "effective" planes. The analysis uses the time-dependent …

New cross sections for the reaction ep → ep η are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5-1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q2 = 0.25-1.5 (GeV/c)2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and etaN coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Newly observed structure at W ~ 1.65 GeV is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted with known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.

We studied the exclusive reaction ep → e' p' ᵠ using the ᵠ →K+K- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Our experiment covers the range in Q2 from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV2and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of ᵠ production on the proton. Our measurement shows the expected decrease of the t slope with the vector-meson formation time c Δ t …

The small-x behavior of structure functions in the saturation region is determined by the non-linear generalization of the BFKL equation. I suggest the effective field theory for the small-x evolution which solves formally this equation. The result is the 2+1 functional integral for the structure functions at small x.

In the gamma-echo technique a radioactive source is moved, with respect to a nuclear-resonant absorber, during the lifetime of first-excited nuclear state. This introduces a phase shift between the source radiation and the radiation from the absorber. If the source is moved abruptly, introducing a pi phase shift, the time-dependent intensity shows a sharp increase in the intensity at that time, the "gamma echo." Using the recently developed one-dimensional quantum-mechanical model, based on the technique developed by Heitler and Harris, the gamma-echo effect is seen to be a phase-shift-induced transparency. A closed-form solution for the time-dependent transmitted intensity has been …

The reaction e→pe′K+Λ(1520) with Λ(1520)→p′K− was studied at electron beam energies of 4.05, 4.25, and 4.46 GeV, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cos θK+, φK+, Q2, and W dependencies of Λ(1520) electroproduction are presented for the kinematic region 0.9 < Q2 < 2.4 GeV2 and 1.95 < W < 2.65 GeV. Also, the Q2 dependence of the Λ(1520) decay angular distribution is presented for the first time. The cosθK+ angular distributions suggest t-channel diagrams dominate the production process. Fits to the Λ(1520) t-channel helicity frame decay angular distributions indicate the m …
