Characterization And Coherent Spin Selective Manipulation Of Quantum Dot Energy Levels, Tristan Anthony Wilkinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates to fulfill a wide range of applications in real-world quantum computing, communication, and networks. Their excellent optical properties such as high brightness, single-photon purity, and narrow linewidths show potential utility in many areas. In order to realize long term goals of integration into complex and scalable quantum information systems, many current challenges must be overcome. One of these challenges is accomplishment of all necessary computing operations within a QD, which might be enabled by coherent manipulation of single QD energy level structures. In the realm of scalability for quantum devices, a way to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research involving light-matter interactions in semiconductor nanostructures has been an interesting topic of investigation for decades. Many systems have been studied for not only probing fundamental physics of the solid state, but also for direct development of technological advancements. Research regarding self-assembled, epitaxially grown quantum dots (QDs) has proven to be prominent in both regards. The development of a reliable, robust source for the production of quantum bits to be utilized in quantum information protocols is a leading venture in the world of condensed matter and solid-state physics. Fluorescence from resonantly driven QDs is a promising candidate for the production …

Advanced Science Research Center
Time-varying media have recently emerged as a new paradigm for wave manipulation, due to the synergy between the discovery of highly nonlinear materials, such as epsilon-near-zero materials, and the quest for wave applications, such as magnet-free nonreciprocity, multimode light shaping, and ultrafast switching. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion of the recent progress achieved with photonic metamaterials whose properties stem from their modulation in time. We review the basic concepts underpinning temporal switching and its relation with spatial scattering and deploy the resulting insight to review photonic time-crystals and their emergent research avenues, such as topological and non-Hermitian …
Thermalization And Quantum Information In Conformal Field Theory, Ashish Kakkar
Thermalization And Quantum Information In Conformal Field Theory, Ashish Kakkar
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The consequences of the constraints of conformal symmetry are far-reaching within
theoretical physics. In this dissertation we address a series of questions in conformal
field theory: 1) We calculate the spectrum of qKdV charges in a large central charge
expansion. 2) We determine the corrections to bulk information geometry from 1/N
contributions to holographic correlators. 3) We study the higher genus partitions
functions of CFTs associated with classical and quantum error-correcting codes.
Perspectives On Determinism In Quantum Mechanics: Born, Bohm, And The 'Quantal Newtonian' Laws, Viraht Sahni
Perspectives On Determinism In Quantum Mechanics: Born, Bohm, And The 'Quantal Newtonian' Laws, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
Quantum mechanics has a deterministic Schrödinger equation for the wave function. The Göttingen-Copenhagen statistical interpretation is based on the Born Rule that interprets the wave function as a ‘probability amplitude’. A precept of this interpretation is the lack of determinism in quantum mechanics. The Bohm interpretation is that the wave function is a source of a field experienced by the electrons, thereby attributing determinism to quantum theory. In this paper we present a new perspective on such determinism. The ideas are based on the equations of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ Laws obeyed by each electron. These Laws, derived from the …
Wave Function Identity: A New Symmetry For 2-Electron Systems In An Electromagnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni
Wave Function Identity: A New Symmetry For 2-Electron Systems In An Electromagnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
Stationary-state Schrödinger-Pauli theory is a description of electrons with a spin moment in an external electromagnetic field. For 2-electron systems as described by the Schrödinger-Pauli theory Hamiltonian with a symmetrical binding potential, we report a new symmetry operation of the electronic coordinates. The symmetry operation is such that it leads to the equality of the transformed wave function to the wave function. This equality is referred to as the Wave Function Identity. The symmetry operation is a two-step process: an interchange of the spatial coordinates of the electrons whilst keeping their spin moments unchanged, followed by an inversion. The Identity …
Linear And Non Linear Properties Of Two-Dimensional Exciton-Polaritons, Mandeep Khatoniar
Linear And Non Linear Properties Of Two-Dimensional Exciton-Polaritons, Mandeep Khatoniar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Technology has been accelerating at breakneck speed since the first quantum revolution, an era that ushered transistors and lasers in the late 1940s and early 1960s. Both of these technologies relied on a matured understanding of quantum theories and since their inception has propelled innovation and development in various sectors like communications, metrology, and sensing. Optical technologies were thought to be the game changers in terms of logic and computing operations, with the elevator pitch being "computing at speed of light", a fundamental speed limit imposed by this universe’s legal system (a.k.a physics). However, it was soon realized that that …
Triplet 23S State Of A Quantum Dot In A Magnetic Field: A 'Quantal Newtonian' First Law Study, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni
Triplet 23S State Of A Quantum Dot In A Magnetic Field: A 'Quantal Newtonian' First Law Study, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
The triplet 23S state of a 2-electron 2-dimensional quantum dot in a magnetic field is studied via a complementary perspective of Schrödinger-Pauli theory. The perspective is that of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ first law. According to the law, each electron experiences an external and internal field, the sum of which vanishes. The external field is the sum of the binding and Lorentz fields. The internal field is a sum of the electron-interaction, kinetic, differential density, and internal magnetic fields. The energy is expressed in integral virial form in terms of these …
Interactions Of Organic Fluorophores With Plasmonic Surface Lattice Resonances, Robert J. Collison
Interactions Of Organic Fluorophores With Plasmonic Surface Lattice Resonances, Robert J. Collison
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
It is common knowledge that metals, alloys and pure elements alike, are lustrous and reflective, the more so when a metal surface is flat, polished, and free from oxidation and surface fouling. However, some metals reflect visible light, in the 380 nm to 740 nm range of wavelengths, much more strongly than others. In particular, some metals reflect wavelengths in certain portions of the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and near-infrared (NIR) regime, let us say 200 nm to 2000 nm, while absorbing light strongly in other segments of this range. There are several factors that account for this difference between various …
Plasmonic Waveguides To Enhance Quantum Electrodynamic Phenomena At The Nanoscale, Ying Li, Christos Argyropoulos
Plasmonic Waveguides To Enhance Quantum Electrodynamic Phenomena At The Nanoscale, Ying Li, Christos Argyropoulos
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The emerging field of plasmonics can lead to enhanced light-matter interactions at extremely nanoscale regions. Plasmonic (metallic) devices promise to efficiently control both classical and quantum properties of light. Plasmonic waveguides are usually used to excite confined electromagnetic modes at the nanoscale that can strongly interact with matter. The analysis of these nanowaveguides exhibits similarities with their low frequency microwave counterparts. In this article, we review ways to study plasmonic nanostructures coupled to quantum optical emitters from a classical electromagnetic perspective. These quantum emitters are mainly used to generate single-photon quantum light that can be employed as a quantum bit …
Spin Superfluidity In Noncollinear Antiferromagnets, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Spin Superfluidity In Noncollinear Antiferromagnets, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Alexey Kovalev Papers
We explore the spin superfluid transport in exchange interaction-dominated three-sublattice antiferromagnets. The system in the long-wavelength regime is described by an SO(3) invariant field theory. Additional corrections from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions or anisotropies can break the symmetry; however, the system still approximately holds a U(1)-rotation symmetry. Thus, the power-law spatial decay signature of spin superfluidity is identified in a nonlocal-measurement setup where the spin injection is described by the generalized spin-mixing conductance. We suggest iron jarosites as promising material candidates for realizing our proposal.

Spirals And Skyrmions In Antiferromagnetic Triangular Lattices, Wuzhang Fang, Aldo Raeliarijaona, Po-Hao Chang, Alexey Kovalev, K. D. Belashchenko
Alexey Kovalev Papers
We study realizations of spirals and skyrmions in two-dimensional antiferromagnets with a triangular lattice on an inversion-symmetry-breaking substrate. As a possible material realization, we investigate the adsorption of transition-metal atoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, or Co) on a monolayer of MoS2, WS2, or WSe2 and obtain the exchange, anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction parameters using first-principles calculations. Using energy minimization and parallel-tempering Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the magnetic phase diagrams for a wide range of interaction parameters. We find that skyrmion lattices can appear even with weak Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, but their stability is hindered by magnetic anisotropy. However, a weak easy …

Topics In Quantum Quench And Entanglement, Sinong Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The dissertation includes two parts.
In Part I, we study non-equilibrium phenomena in various models associated with global quantum quench. It is known that local quantities, when subjected to global quantum quench across or approaching critical points, exhibit a variety of universal scaling behaviors at various quench rates. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-local quantities, we consider the scaling behavior of circuit complexity under quantum quench across the critical massless point in Majorana fermion field theory of the one-dimensional integrable transverse field Ising model and find it obeys such scaling. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-relativistic …
Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss
Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss
Theses and Dissertations
Warm dense plasma is the matter that exists, roughly, in the range of 10,000 to 10,000,000 Kelvin and has solid-like densities, typically between 0.1 and 10 grams per centimeter. Warm dense fluids like hydrogen, helium, and carbon are believed to make up the interiors of many planets, white dwarfs, and other stars in our universe. The existence of warm dense matter (WDM) on Earth, however, is very rare, as it can only be created with high-energy sources like a nuclear explosion. In such an event, theoretical and computational models that accurately predict the response of certain materials are thus very …
Ligand Effects On Electronic, Magnetic, And Catalytic Properties Of Clusters And Cluster Assemblies, Dinesh Bista 9288522
Ligand Effects On Electronic, Magnetic, And Catalytic Properties Of Clusters And Cluster Assemblies, Dinesh Bista 9288522
Theses and Dissertations
Ligands commonly protect metallic clusters against reacting with outside reactants. However, ligands can also be used to control the redox properties enabling the formation of super donors/acceptors that can donate/accept multiple electrons. This thesis focuses on how the ligands can be used to control the electronic and magnetic features of clusters and ligand stabilized cluster-based assemblies, leading to nano pn junctions with directed transport, the possibility of light-harvesting, and catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. The thesis addresses three distinct classes of clusters and their applications. The first class of cluster “metal chalcogen clusters” is the central idea of the thesis focused …
Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni
Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
The Schrödinger-Pauli (SP) theory of electrons in an electromagnetic field explicitly accounts for the electron spin moment. The many-electron theory is complemented via a new descriptive perspective viz. that of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ first law. The law is in terms of ‘classical’ fields whose sources are quantum mechanical expectation values of Hermitian operators taken with respect to the system wave function. The law states that each electron experiences an external and an internal field, the sum of which vanish. The external field is the sum of the binding electrostatic and a Lorentz …

Emulating Condensed Matter Systems In Classical Wave Metamaterials, Matthew Weiner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
One of the best tools we have for the edification of physics is the analogy. When we take our classical set of states and dynamical variables in phase space and treat them as vectors and Hermitian operators respectively in Hilbert space through the canonical quantization, we lose out on a lot of the intuition developed with the previous classical physics. With classical physics, through our own experiences and understanding of how systems should behave, we create easy-to-understand analogies: we compare the Bohr model of the atom to the motion of the planets, we compare electrical circuits to the flow of …

Density Functional Theory Calculations Of Al Doped Hafnia For Different Crystal Symmetry Configurations, Joshua Steier
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Dogan et al.[1], investigated the causes of ferroelectricity in doped hafnia using ab initio methods. Similarly, we investigated the stability of Al doped hafnia using quantum mechanical methods.
There are many different phases of Hafnia: monoclinic, tetragonal, cubic and orthorhombic. Starting with the monoclinic phase of Hafnia, Hafnia undergoes phase transitions which result in different space groups. The temperature at which the tetragonal phase is induced is 2000 K and cubic phase is induced at 2900 K[1]. Different dielectric constants vary from phase to phase. The average dielectric constants are highest for the cubic and tetragonal phases. In order to …

It is shown that, in some cases, the effect of discrete distributions of flux lines in quantum mechanics can be associated with the effect of continuous distributions of magnetic fields with special symmetries. In particular, flux lines with an arbitrary value of magnetic flux can be used to create energetic barriers, which can be used to confine quantum systems in specially designed configurations. This generalizes a previous work where such energy barriers arose from flux lines with half-integer fluxons. Furthermore, it is shown how the Landau levels can be obtained from a two-dimensional grid of flux lines. These results suggest …
Thermodynamic Properties Of Transverse Field Quantum Ising Model Using Tensor Network Formalism, Sin Yang Pang
Thermodynamic Properties Of Transverse Field Quantum Ising Model Using Tensor Network Formalism, Sin Yang Pang
Student Works (2020-2029)
Ising model has been successful in describing ferromagnetism and its phase transition to paramagnet. At the critical point, the free energy density function and its derivatives diverge. Their behaviour near the critical point are described by power-laws with associated critical exponents. In many cases, the critical exponents can be determined from analytic solutions via conventional renormalization groups methods or from Monte Carlo simulations. However, for quantum many-body systems, very few are tractable to analytical solutions. The quantum many-body wavefunction belongs to large dimensional Hilbert space that increases exponentially with system size. If the Hamiltonian is gapped and only local interaction …
Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl
Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The intent of my project is to determine if the proposal of sliding phases in XY layered systems has physical ground. It will be done by comparing numerical and analytical results for a layered XY models. Sliding phases were first proposed in the context of DNA complexes and then extended to XY models, 1D coupled wires and superfluid films. The existence of the sliding phase would mean that there is a phase transition from 3D to 2D behavior. Such systems have been studied both in the clean case and with disorder. The idea of the sliding phases is based on …

Density Functional Theory Study Of Two-Dimensional Boron Nitride Films, Pradip R. Niraula
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since graphene was isolated in 2004, the number of two-dimensional (2D) materials and their scientific relevance have grown exponentially. Besides graphene, one of the most important and technolocially promizing 2D materials that has emerged in recent years is hexagonal boron nitride, in its monolayer or multilayer form. In my thesis work, I used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the properties of boron nitride films. In particular, I first studied the properties (i.e. formation energy, defect states, and structure) of point charged defects in monolayer and bilayer hexagonal boron nitride, and subsequently, I focused on the linear and nonlinear …

Magnetism In Γ-Fesi2 Nanostructures: A First Principles Study, Sahil Dhoka
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
First-principles calculations are performed on γ-FeSi2 nanostructures grown on Si (111) and (001) substrate. An attempt to explain the origin of emergent magnetic properties of the metastable gamma phase of iron di-silicide (γ-FeSi2) is made, which show ferromagnetic behavior on nanoscale, unlike its possible bulk form. Many papers try to explain this magnetism from factors like bulk, epitaxial strain, interface, surface, edges, and corners but doesn’t provide an analytical study for these explanations. Density functional theory is used to analyze the magnetic effects of these factors. The results for the epitaxial structures show no magnetic behavior for …

Density Functional Calculations On Single Molecular (1d) And Van Der Waals Bi -Layered (2d) Magnets., Md Shamsul Alam
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Low-dimensional magnetic materials show novel properties that is not seen in bulk magnets. The weak interactions such as spin-orbit interactions, electron correlation, van der Waals interaction in case magnetic bi-layers, play an important role in determining the properties of the system. Using density functional theory, we computationally investigated two categories of magnetic material- 1: Single Molecular Magnets (SMM) 2: Van der Waals layered Cr-Halide magnets. We used different classes of density functionals to examine the spin ordering and magnetic anisotropy barriers in several single molecule magnets - Mn12, Co4, Ni4, V15. We find that the magnetic anisotropy barrier significantly depends …

Theoretical Investigations Of The Electronic, Magnetic, And Thermoelectric Properties Of Transition-Metal Based Compounds, Haleoot Edaan Raad
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The electronic, magnetic, and thermoelectric properties of transition-metal based compounds were investigated by using the density functional theory and Boltzmann transport formalism. It was found that the Co-based Heusler compounds and InSe monochalcogenide are among the materials that may be used for future thermoelectric devices. Furthermore, the investigation showed that the quaternary Heusler compounds, such as, CoFeYGe, where Y is Ti or Cr, are half-metallic ferromagnetic materials with full electron spin polarization. The lattice thermal conductivity (κL) was found to decrease for these alloys as the temperature increases. The present investigation indicated that the phonon optical modes have a major …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Multiband superconducting materials, such as iron pnictides and doped topological insulators, have shown to be particularly promising platforms for realizing unconventional electronic behavior of both fundamental and practical importance. Similarly, new innovations in the engineering of gapped topological phases, like semiconductor based Kitaev chains and topological insulator based heterostructures, have opened new directions for solid-state design. Central to much of the excitement generated by such multifaceted electronic systems is a rich interplay between various inherent structural ordering tendencies and topologically non-trivial properties.
In some classes of pnictides, spin density wave order coexists with superconductivity over a range of doping and …

We study the properties of excitons in 2D semiconductors (2DSC) by numerically solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for an interacting electron and hole in the effective mass approximation, then calculating optical properties such as the transition energies, oscillator strengths, and absorption coefficients. Our theoretical approach allows us to consider both direct excitons in monolayer (ML) 2DSC and spatially indirect excitons in heterostructures (HS) consisting of two 2DSC MLs separated by few-layer insulating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). In particular, we study indirect excitons in TMDC HS, namely MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2; …

Toward Devices For Exploring Pt-Symmetry In Electronic Transport Of Graphene, Michael Carovillano
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Parity-time symmetry, or PT -symmetry is the principle that in quantum mechanics a non- Hermitian Hamiltonian is capable of returning real eigenstates and real spectra.Recent research has demonstrated real world observation of PT -symmetry in electronics and optics. We aim to expand the regime of observed PT -symmetry through measurement of the electronic transport of graphene devices. Drawing from analogous experiments, we plan to use balanced ohmic resistance acting as both loss and relative gain to induce the required unbroken PT -symmetry regime. This paper analyzes techniques used in fabrication of such devices as well as the basis of the …

Recent surge of interest in topological insulators, insulating in their interior but conducting at the surfaces or interfaces of different domains, has led to the discovery of a variety of new topological states, and their topological invariants are characterized by numerous approaches in the category of topological band theory. The common features shared by topological insulators include, the topological phase transition occurs if the bulk bandgap is formed due to the symmetries reduction, the topological invariants exist characterizing the global properties of the material and inherently robust to disorder and continuous perturbations irrespective of the local details. Most importantly, these …
Improving The Readout Of Semiconducting Qubits, Matthew Jon Curry
Improving The Readout Of Semiconducting Qubits, Matthew Jon Curry
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Semiconducting qubits are a promising platform for quantum computers. In particular, silicon spin qubits have made a number of advancements recently including long coherence times, high-fidelity single-qubit gates, two-qubit gates, and high-fidelity readout. However, all operations likely require improvement in fidelity and speed, if possible, to realize a quantum computer.
Readout fidelity and speed, in general, are limited by circuit challenges centered on extracting low signal from a device in a dilution refrigerator connected to room temperature amplifiers by long coaxial cables with relatively high capacitance. Readout fidelity specifically is limited by the time it takes to reliably distinguish qubit …
