Contamination of terrestrial systems by microplastics (MPs) has become a critical environmental hazard, but detection of such contaminants in a complex soil system is a challenge for conventional analytical techniques. This research aims to assess the potential of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for the detection and differentiation of different types of microplastics, including HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS, and PVC, dispersed in the soil of Al Najaf, Iraq. Soil samples were collected from different functional zones, namely, Industrial, Commercial, Agricultural, Residential, and Roadside, at the surface level and 30 cm depth. Detection was done by measuring the intensity of the C/H …

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications
This research presents an extensive investigation of Ion acoustic soliton dynamics governed by a Beta-fractional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Burgurs (KPB) model. By engaging the planar dynamical system scheme in aggregation with the extended $(\phi, \psi)$ expansion, Kudryashov expansion, and the NMKM analytic schemes, we create a broad class of exact nonlinear pattern wave solutions. The local stability edifice of the fractional plasma model is explored through bifurcation theory, enabling the far-reaching classification of all admissible phase diagrams. Conforming Ion acoustic wave structures allied with every detour alignment are systematically assembled. Owing to the fractional and dissipative appearances of the model, an all-embracing assortment …

The food sector must contend with issues such as pathogen resistance to some of the available chemical agents, environmental pollution, and climate change to provide healthy food for livestock and people. The application of atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) is one potential solution for such problems. Plasma is appropriate for effective surface decontamination regarding food products and seeds, surface decontamination, and achieving improved agricultural production yields. The impact of plasma-activated water (PAW) produced by plasma jet discharge (PJD) system on in vitro-cultivated wheat seeds is examined in this work. For this aim, a plasma jet system was constructed with a …

By injecting an electron into the empty pie* molecular orbital (LUMO) of Amino Acids in gas phase, we measure the Vertical Attachment Energies (VAEs) for the formation of short-lived anion states of these species using electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS). Our ETS study, a first of its kind to measure the VAE for the simplest of proteins, Glycine-Glycine (Gly-Gly), is currently in progress. Based on our previous measurements for several Amino Acids including Glycine, we expect a common range of attachment energy (1.50 – 2.00 eV) for Gly-Gly.

SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, machine learning techniques are used to reconstruct particle collision pathways. CERN (Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire) uses a massive underground particle collider, called the Large Hadron Collider or LHC, to produce particle collisions at extremely high speeds. There are several layers of detectors in the collider that track the pathways of particles as they collide. The data produced from collisions contains an extraneous amount of background noise, i.e., decays from known particle collisions produce fake signal. Particularly, in the first layer of the detector, the pixel tracker, there is an overwhelming amount of background noise that …

This paper reports the synthesis of CuO/ZnO and MgO/ZnO core/shell nanoparticles using atmospheric plasma jets. The characterization of the synthesized CuO/ZnO and MgO/ZnO core/shell nanoparticles were confirmed by a series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The XRD analysis confirmed no other peaks related to the secondary phases for CuO, MgO, or ZnO, indicating the purity of these nanoparticles. Additionally, EDX analysis confirmed the formation of high purity CuO/ZnO and MgO/ZnO core/shell nanoparticles. The surface morphology, which represented the high agglomeration rate, was investigated using …

In this research work, a pulsed Nd-YْAG laser having a wavelength of 1064 nm and energy (400-700 mJ (has been utilized as a source in an induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) experiment to determine the density of electron and the tem-perature of Ag-plasma. Two forms of silver (as a bulk and as a compressed nano powder) have been used as targets in the LIBSs setup. The aim of the present work is to study the impact of target properties and laser energy on the plasma fea-tures formed by the interaction between a pulsed laser and these two forms of silver. The …

A Review Of Ball Lightning Models, Hasitha Mahabaduge
Georgia Journal of Science
Ball lightning is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere. However due to its brevity and rarity, its occurrence is not well understood. Three models based on electromagnetic properties are discussed in this paper to explain the rare phenomenon of ball lightning. The first model incorporates the idea of electron bunching, electrons moving with different velocities. This creates a plasma bubble by recombining electrons with ionized gas to form plasma that is stabilized by a standing microwave. The second model explains the idea of streamers being tangled and linked in a magnetic field while stabilized by the conservation of …
Numerical Solutions To Hall Magnetohydrodynamic Equations Near An X-Type Magnetic Neutral Line, Kyle Reger
Numerical Solutions To Hall Magnetohydrodynamic Equations Near An X-Type Magnetic Neutral Line, Kyle Reger
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The Hall Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model is a new paradigm for describing fast magnetic reconnection processes in space and laboratory plasmas. Current sheets form and store enormous amounts of magnetic energy at X-type magnetic neutral points, which is released as magnetic storms when the sheets break up. The fast magnetic reconnection process impacts solar flares and Earth's geomagnetic sub-storms, which affect global weather. The fast magnetic reconnection process also influences fusion reactors, which may be used as a future energy source. Numerical analysis of approximate solutions to the Hall MHD equations at X-type magnetic neutral points offer these solutions further credence …

Power And Langmuir Probe Measurements Of H2 Rf Plasma, Alexander A. Stowell
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Methane based gases are often used to produce thin films of biomaterials, such as diamond-like carbon, through Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition. The characterization of the H2 plasma will give a deeper understanding of the physical processes occurring. Understanding these processes could lead to the optimization of the production of these thin films in the future. In this paper, we examine the H2 plasma using a Langmuir probe to gain information on the electron temperature and density of the plasma discharge. We measured electron temperatures of 6eV. Our Langmuir probe data indicates the electron temperature remains constant as …

Dissociative Excitation Of H2 In An Rf Plasma, John Carlson
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is a widely used method for depositing thin films. In order to optimize the properties of the films, it is important to understand the plasma processes that occur during film growth. In this research we use optical emission spectroscopy in order to measure the spectral emission lines of a plasma produced with hydrogen gas. In conjunction with other measurements and modeling, these measurements can provide insight to the electron energy distribution of the plasma.

The objective of this project was to model particle beams in a number of 1-D potential systems and to create generalized Mathematica programs that can later be added on to continue further research into more complicated systems involving electric fields across nanowires. The project was mainly used to investigate how the transmission coefficients (i.e., percentage transmission) of these beams dynamically varied with changing parameters and to visualize in real time how exactly resonance peaks and band structures arose and changed as certain parameters (such as number and height of barriers) changed values.

The fabrication of a cosine coil having unevenly distributed struts is detailed. Placing the struts in such a manner enables a standing wave at the desired frequency and, hence, only one resonance frequency is obtained. This study details the fabrication of a cosine coil tuned to the LJ-7 frequency (77.76 MHz) and then double-tuned to the H-1 frequency (200.1 MHz) when operated at 4.7 Tesla. Double-tuning is attained by placing an LC trap in series with a capacitor used to single-tune the coil. Also, a method is suggested by which a cosine coil can be broadbanded in the lower frequency …
