Carbon Nanotube Electronic Structures As Anti-Corrosion Coatings, Sreeya Sreevatsa Aug 2009

Carbon Nanotube Electronic Structures As Anti-Corrosion Coatings, Sreeya Sreevatsa

Dissertations

A new concept of corrosion prevention is considered in this study. Diode-like and transistor-like structures have been fabricated and analyzed in the study of ionic flow through the resulting potential barriers. The structures were made of functionalized carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are known for many remarkable properties among which is being chemically inert. Taking advantage of this property, a study of corrosion of steel was undertaken.

In the first case study, successive layers of functionalized carbon nanotubes were deposited to form p-n junctions on steel substrates. It was demonstrated that the corrosion was indeed impeded by the potential barrier formed …

Probing The Complex Magnetic, Electronic And Structural Properties In Correlated Manganese Oxides, Peng Gao Aug 2009

Probing The Complex Magnetic, Electronic And Structural Properties In Correlated Manganese Oxides, Peng Gao

Dissertations

Rare-earth Manganese Oxides (RMnO3) exhibit two distinct structural phases: the orthorhombic structure and the hexagonal structure. The doped orthorhombic phase exhibits a metal to insulator transition, charge ordering and a strong response of electron transport properties to magnetic fields (colossal magneto-resistance). At low temperatures, this system may also exhibit a finite polarization which couples to external magnetic fields. The hexagonal phase is known to have a large spontaneous polarization at high temperatures which couples to the low temperature magnetic order. These materials are important from the basic point of view of understanding strong electronic correlations and …

Terahertz Response Of Microfluidic-Jetted Fabricated 3d Flexible Metamaterials, Yew Li Hor Jan 2009

Terahertz Response Of Microfluidic-Jetted Fabricated 3d Flexible Metamaterials, Yew Li Hor

Dissertations

Conventional materials exhibit some restrictions on their electromagnetic properties. Especially in terahertz region, for example, materials that exhibit magnetic response are far less common in nature than materials that exhibit electric response. However, materials can be designed, namely artificial man-made metamaterials that exhibit electromagnetic properties that are not found in natural materials by adjusting, for example, the dielectric, magnetic or structural parameters of the constituent elements.

This dissertation demonstrates the use of new fabrication techniques to construct metamaterials in THz range via a material deposition system. The metamaterials are fabricated by stacking alternative layers with conventional designs such as single …

Synchrotron Radiation-Based Characterization Of Gan- Based Mqw Structures And Strongly Correlated Materials, Sean M. O'Malley

Dissertations

The following dissertation applies synchrotron radiation-based characterization techniques to the fields of gallium nitrides, multiferroic manganites, and self-assembled nano-domain oxide films. These material systems were chosen due to their unusual properties and potential device applications, which have made them very attractive to the scientific community.

Synchrotron-based High Resolution X-ray Diffraction (HRXRD) was used to characterize the structural properties of GaN-based multiple quantum well (MQW) structures grown on trapezoidal shaped GaN ridges. Results where interpreted within the framework of vapor-phase diffusion and surface-migration effects during the metalorganic vapor phase epitaxial growth. The relatively short diffusion length of group- III precursors and …

Flexible Electronics : Materials And Sensor Fabrication, Katherine J. Duncan

Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how to fabricate piezoelectric/pyroelectric thin films by using different printing techniques. These techniques could replace vacuum techniques for manufacturing piezoelectric/pyroelectric sensors. Ink-jet, screen and stencil printing techniques were developed to print these devices.

This work outlines attempts to develop a solution processable conductive ink for ink-jet printing. It then details the printing of commercial conductive ink on flexible substrates employing the three printing methods. Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, are both used to investigate the structure of the P(VDF-TrFE) films. Optical microscopy is used to investigate the thickness and uniformity of the deposited films. The …

Space weather is the response of our space environment to the constantly changing Sun. As the new technology advances, mankind has become more and more dependent on space system, satellite-based services. A geomagnetic storm, a disturbance in Earth's magnetosphere, may produce many harmful effects on Earth. Solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are believed to be the major causes of geomagnetic storms. Thus, establishing a real time forecasting method for them is very important in space weather study.

The topics covered in this dissertation are: the relationship between magnetic gradient and magnetic shear of solar active regions; the relationship …

Design, Fabrication And Testing Of A Fiber Optic Stress/Strain Sensor For Soft Stretchable Materials Using Polarization Imaging Technique, Jianjun Zheng

Dissertations

The polarization imaging technique has been used to obtain high quality surface images of turbid media. This technique can be slightly modified and used for noninvasive sensing of strain and stress in soft stretchable materials, such as latex and human tissues. Previously this sensing method was developed with free space bulk optics. In this study, a fiber optic based system is developed to investigate the potential application of this technology on the strain/stress as well as surface roughness measurements of stretchable materials. In this system, polarizers are simply attached to the fiber ends to form a polarizing three-fiber probe. Furthermore, …

Long Exposure Point Spread Function Estimation From Solar Adaptive Optics Loop Data, Jose Marino May 2007

Long Exposure Point Spread Function Estimation From Solar Adaptive Optics Loop Data, Jose Marino

Dissertations

Adaptive optics (AG) systems provide partial correction to wavefront distortions introduced by the Earth's atmosphere. They have become an essential tool to obtain diffraction-limited observations from ground-based telescopes. However, the AG correction is only partial and post-processing with a good estimate of the point spread function (PSF) is required.

PSF estimates are impossible to measure directly during solar observations due to the lack of point sources in the field-of-view. Moreover, the highly variable day-time seeing conditions require the estimated PSF to be simultaneous with the captured image. A method is presented to estimate the long-exposure PSF of AG-corrected solar observations …

Construction Of Fasr Subsystem Testbed And Application For Solar Burst Trajectories And Rfi Study, Zhiwei Liu

Dissertations

The construction of the Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope (FASR) Subsystem Testbed (FST) and observational results are described. Three antennas of Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) have been upgraded with newly designed, state of art technology. The 1-9 GHz RF signal from the antenna feed is transmitted via broadband (45 MHz-9.5 GHz) optical fiber links to the control room. The RF is then downconverted to a 500 MHz, single-sideband signal that can be tuned across the 1-9 GHz RF band. The data are sampled with an 8-bit, 1 GHz sampling-rate digitizer, and further saved to a computer hard disk. The full-resolution …

High Resolution Studies Of Complex Solar Active Regions, Na Deng Jan 2007

High Resolution Studies Of Complex Solar Active Regions, Na Deng

Dissertations

Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are energetic events, which can even impact the near-Earth environment and are the principal source of space weather. Most of them originate in solar active regions. The most violent events are produced in sunspots with a complex magnetic field topology. Studying their morphology and dynamics is helpful in understanding the energy accumulation and release mechanisms for flares and CMEs, which are intriguing problems in solar physics.

The study of complex active regions is based on high-resolution observations from space missions and new instruments at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). Adaptive optics (AG) in …

The purpose of the present work has been to investigate the small and large-scale magnetic structures and their evolution associated with flares in the context of magnetic reconnection, based on which the goal of this dissertation is to further the understanding of the various properties of flares and related phenomena, including their origin, precursors, and evolution of morphology in solar atmosphere.

The research presented in this dissertation relied upon multiwavelength observations of …

Feasibility Of Superconductivity In Semiconductor Superlatices, Kenneth P. Walsh Aug 2006

Feasibility Of Superconductivity In Semiconductor Superlatices, Kenneth P. Walsh

Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to explore superconductivity in semiconductor superlattices of alternating hole and electron layers. The feasibility of superconductivity in semiconductor superlattices is based on a model formulated by Harshrnan and Mills. In this model, a semiconductor superlattice forms the layered electron and hole reservoirs of high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors.

A GaAs-A1xGa1-xAs semiconductor structure is proposed which is predicted to superconduct at Tc = 2.0 K and may be analogous to the layered electronic structure of high-Tc superconductors. Formation of an alternating sequence of electron- and hole-populated quantum wells (an electron-hole superlattice) in a modulation-doped GaAs- …

Earthshine : Photometry, Modeling, And Spectral Observations, Jeffrey Patrick Hickey Aug 2006

Earthshine : Photometry, Modeling, And Spectral Observations, Jeffrey Patrick Hickey

Theses

The Earthshine group has been making sustained observations of the Earthshine from Big Bear Solar Observatory in California since late 1998. There have also been intermittent observations from 1994-5. High and low resolution Earthshine spectral observations have also been under taken at Palomar Observatory since 1999. The group has re-invigorated and modernized a nearly forgotten way of measuring the Earth's albedo, and hence its energy balance, previously studied by Danjon (and his followers) for about twenty-five years early in the last century, using their observations of the Earthshine from France. This is an overview paper covering observations, reductions, simulations, and …

Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay May 2006

Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay

Dissertations

The applications of terahertz (THz, 1 THz is 1012 cycles per second or 300 pm in wavelength) radiation are rapidly expanding. In particular, THz imaging is emerging as a powerful technique to spatially map a wide variety of objects with spectral features which are present for many materials in THz region. Objects buried within dielectric structures can also be imaged due to the transparency of most dielectrics in this regime. Unfortunately, the image quality in such applications is inherently influenced by the scattering introduced by the sample inhomogeneities and by the presence of barriers that reduces both the transmitted power …

Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta May 2006

Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta

Dissertations

Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. This involves numerous applications of this region of the electromagnetic spectrum between approximately 100 GHz (3mm) and 3 THz (100 µm) for both spectroscopy and imaging purposes. THz time domain spectroscopy is unique in that the time domain waveforms are measured and the complex optical constants are deduced directly without resorting to the Kramers-Kronig Analysis.

In this work, THz spectroscopy has been used to characterize different types of materials. Materials investigated consisted of semiconductors, gate dielectric materials, high energetic materials …

Studies Of Solar White-Light Flares And Small-Scale Magnetic Structures Observed In The Near Infrared, Yan Xu Aug 2005

Studies Of Solar White-Light Flares And Small-Scale Magnetic Structures Observed In The Near Infrared, Yan Xu

Dissertations

Using the most advanced infrared imaging technology as developed by NJIT, detailed study of solar white-light flares and small magnetic structures, such as faculae and pores, are presented in this dissertation. The investigations focus on near-infrared observations at 1.56 μm, which are good proxy of the deepest layer of the solar photosphere.

I made fundamental contributions in two areas of near infrared (NIR) solar physics: (1) the first detection and understanding of white-light flares in the NIR and (2) clearly demonstrated non-existence of "dark faculae". Several high-resolution observations have been carried out at BBSO and National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak. The …

Emissivity Of Patterned Silicon Wafers In Rapid Thermal Processing, Markus Rabus Aug 2005

Emissivity Of Patterned Silicon Wafers In Rapid Thermal Processing, Markus Rabus

Theses

The influence of patterns on emissivity in silicon wafers in rapid thermal processing systems has been investigated. In this study, two experiments with layered and patterned silicon wafers were conducted. The main difference in the experiments is the way in which the temperature was controlled. The first experiment was performed under Open Loop Intensity Control (OLIC). For OLIC, no feedback from the wafer is returned. It is assumed that supplying a certain power level will lead to the desired temperature. The other experiment used the Closed Loop Intensity Control. In this case, a feedback, in the form of temperature deviation …

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz Aug 2005

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz

Theses

The objective of this study was to further the current understanding of the correlation between solar flares and magnetic flux change. The average gradient of the magnetic flux around the neutral line of Active Region 9415 and the locations of the magnetic flux centers-of-mass in both polarities in AR 9415 were determined. Subsequent to the 2001 April 6 flare, there was a statistically significant mean increase of 0.00208 G/km in the average gradient. Prior to the flare, the magnetic flux centers-of-mass became increasingly sheared along the neutral line. After the flare, this shear suddenly decreased and the magnetic flux centers-of-mass …

Both statistical and case studies have been carried out.

The topics covered in this dissertation are: the statistical relationship among phenomena of solar activity, in particular, filament eruptions, flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs); the correlation between magnetic reconnection rate and flux rope acceleration of two-ribbon flares; the …

Hybrid Explicit-Implicit Fdtd-Fem Time-Domain Solver For Electromagnetic Problems, Kakhkhor Abdijalilov Jan 2005

Hybrid Explicit-Implicit Fdtd-Fem Time-Domain Solver For Electromagnetic Problems, Kakhkhor Abdijalilov

Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method and Finite-Element (FEM) method are numerical techniques used for solving Maxwell's electromagnetic equations. FDTD-FEM hybrid methods opt for combining the advantages of both FDTD and FEM. In this dissertation, signal processing techniques were used to analyze the FDTD stability condition. A procedure, which reduces time-sampling error yet preserves the stability of algorithm is proposed. Both explicit and implicit time-stepping schemes were treated in the framework of the developed method. An improved version of the implicit-explicit FEM-FDTD hybrid method was developed. The new method minimizes reflection from the interface between different types of grids. A class …

Characteristics Of Nanocomposites And Semiconductor Heterostructure Wafers Using Thz Spectroscopy, Hakan Altan Jan 2005

Characteristics Of Nanocomposites And Semiconductor Heterostructure Wafers Using Thz Spectroscopy, Hakan Altan

Dissertations

All optical, THz-Time Domain Spectroscopic (THz-TDS) methods were employed towards determining the electrical characteristics of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Ion Implanted Si nanoclusters and Si1-xGex HFO2, SiO2 on p-type Si wafers.

For the nanoscale composite materials, Visible Pump/THz Probe spectroscopy measurements were performed after observing that the samples were not sensitive to the THz radiation alone. The results suggest that the photoexcited nanotubes exhibit localized transport due to Lorentz-type photo-induced localized states from 0.2 to 0.7THz. The THz transmission is modeled through the photoexcited layer with an effective dielectric constant described by a Drude …

An Optic Fiber Sensor For Partial Discharge Acoustic Detection, Xiaodong Wang Jan 2005

An Optic Fiber Sensor For Partial Discharge Acoustic Detection, Xiaodong Wang

Dissertations

Partial discharge (PD) is a very common problem in operating power transformers and is one of the factors that could lead to failure of power transformers, leading to power outage and expensive repairs. The acoustic wave induced by PD can be measured and used for monitoring, diagnosing, and locating potential failures in power transformers.

The effects of the temperature of the transformer and transformer oil are one of the very important parameters in PD and these effects are investigated in detail. The Fast Fourier Transform (FF1') is used to synthesize the measured data and results show that for periodic PD …

Characterization Of Ultrathin Gate Dielectrics And Multilayer Charge Injection Barriers, Edwin M. Dons May 2004

Characterization Of Ultrathin Gate Dielectrics And Multilayer Charge Injection Barriers, Edwin M. Dons

Dissertations

Since the invention of the first integrated circuit, the semiconductor industry has distinguished itself by a phenomenally rapid pace of improvements in device performance. This trend of ever smaller and faster devices is a result of the ability to exponentially reduce feature sizes of integrated circuits, a trend commonly known as "scaling". A reduction of overall feature sizes requires a simultaneous reduction in the thickness of the gate dielectric, SiO2, of a MOSFET. Gate oxides in the ultrathin regime (<35 A) feature a large direct tunneling leakage current. The presence of this leakage current requires a reevaluation of standard characterization techniques as well as a reevaluation of the continued usefulness of SiO2 as the gate dielectric of choice for future applications. On the other hand, a thorough understanding of …

Understanding The Origin Of The Recovery Of Superconductivity In Halogenated Ybco Single Crystal : Atomic Structure Study, Lamine Mohamed Kollakoye Dieng May 2004

Understanding The Origin Of The Recovery Of Superconductivity In Halogenated Ybco Single Crystal : Atomic Structure Study, Lamine Mohamed Kollakoye Dieng

Dissertations

The recovery of superconductivity in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+y (YBCO) by exposure to bromine, iodine, chlorine and fluorine is a long-standing problem which has not been clearly resolved. The key question concerns the role of these halogens in the lattice. In order to shed light to this problem, we have performed multiple-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements about the Y K, Ba L3, I L3, Cu K and Br K-edges at room temperature on brominated (non-brominated) and iodinated (non-iodinated) YBCO single crystals. Our XAFS results at the Br K (brominated) and I …

High Resolution Solar Observations In The Context Of Space Weather Prediction, Guo Yang

Dissertations

Space weather has a great impact on the Earth and human life. It is important to study and monitor active regions on the solar surface and ultimately to predict space weather based on the Sun's activity. In this study, a system that uses the full power of speckle masking imaging by parallel processing to obtain high-spatial resolution images of the solar surface in near real-time has been developed and built. The application of this system greatly improves the ability to monitor the evolution of solar active regions and to predict the adverse effects of space weather. The data obtained by …

Statistical Study Of Solar Radio Bursts, Gelu-Marius Nita

Dissertations

The peak flux distribution of 40 years of solar radio burst data recorded by NOAA, as a function of frequency and time over a wide range of frequencies, was investigated to quantify the potential impact of radio bursts on wireless systems. Tables of fit parameters, which can be used to find burst occurrence rates in a number of frequency ranges, are presented. The typical power-law index of number density distribution, -1.8, is similar to that found in many hard X-ray studies. Significant changes were found in power-law index with frequency. The results may be useful for designers of current and …

Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index (N2) And Stimulated Raman Scattering In Optical Fibers As A Function Of Germania Content, Using The Photorefractive Beam Coupling Technique, Ferdinand Anayo Oguama Aug 2003

Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index (N2) And Stimulated Raman Scattering In Optical Fibers As A Function Of Germania Content, Using The Photorefractive Beam Coupling Technique, Ferdinand Anayo Oguama

Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges in optical communication is the understanding and control of optical fiber nonlinearities. While these nonlinearites limit the power handling capacity of optical fibers and can cause noise, signal distortion and cross talk in optically amplified transmission systems, they have been equally harnessed for the development of new generations of optical amplifiers and tunable laser sources. The two prominent parameters that characterize the nonlinear properties of an optical fiber are the nonlinear refractive index n2 and the Raman gain coefficient gR. These parameters are related to the third order nonlinear susceptibility [x(3) …

Understanding The Origins Of Metastability In Thin Film Growth; Tantalum And The Early Group Vb-Vib Metals, Neme Okechukwu Nnolim

Dissertations

Tantalum (Ta) is a metal that is highly prized for its applications in a variety of industries, including the microelectronics industry, where it is largely used in thin film modifications in order to achieve various electronic, magnetic and structural capabilities in solid-state devices. Ta frequently forms metastable phases, including the well-known ß-phase, during the preparation of thin Ta films by standard film deposition methods such as sputtering and electro-deposition. In order to gain insight into Ta metastable phase formation, the Bain transformation mechanism is studied for Ta and the neighboring body centered cubic (bcc) transition metals in Groups 5 and …
