Optimizing The Plasmonic Enhancement Of Light In Metallic Nanogap Structures For Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Stephen Joseph Bauman
Optimizing The Plasmonic Enhancement Of Light In Metallic Nanogap Structures For Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Stephen Joseph Bauman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Technology based on the interaction between light and matter has entered something of a renaissance over the past few decades due to improved control over the creation of nanoscale patterns. Tunable nanofabrication has benefitted optical sensing, by which light is used to detect the presence or quantity of various substances. Through methods such as Raman spectroscopy, the optical spectra of solid, liquid, or gaseous samples act as fingerprints which help identify a single type of molecule amongst a background of potentially many other chemicals. This technique therefore offers great benefit to applications such as biomedical sensors, airport security, industrial waste …
Scattering Of Few Photon Fields By Two Level Systems In A One Dimensional Geometry, William Konyk
Scattering Of Few Photon Fields By Two Level Systems In A One Dimensional Geometry, William Konyk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent experimental progress has realized strong, efficient coupling of effective two level systems to waveguides. We study the scattering of multimode photons from such emitters coupled losslessly to the confined geometry of a one dimensional waveguide. We develop novel techniques for describing the scattered state of both single and multi-photon wavepackets and explore how such wavepackets interact with arrays of emitters coupled to a one dimensional waveguide. Finally, we apply these techniques and analyze the capability of two particular systems to act as a quantum conditional logic gate.

Near Bandgap Two-Photon Excited Luminescence Of Inas Quantum Dots, Xian Hu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) confine carriers in three dimensions, resulting in atomic-like energy levels as well as size-dependent electrical and optical properties. Self-assembled III-V QD is one of the most studied semiconductor QDs thanks to their well-established fabrication techniques and versatile optical properties. This dissertation presents the photoluminescence (PL) study of the InAs/GaAs QDs with both above bandgap continuous-wave excitation (one-photon excitation) and below-bandgap pulse excitation (two-photon excitation). Samples of ensemble QDs, single QD (SQD), and QDs in a micro-cavity, all grown by molecular beam epitaxy, are used in this study. Morphology of these samples was examined using atomic force …
Generation Of Generalized-Gauss Laser Beams Via A Spatial Light Modulator, Jessica P. Conry Young, Samantha Dix
Generation Of Generalized-Gauss Laser Beams Via A Spatial Light Modulator, Jessica P. Conry Young, Samantha Dix
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Generalized-Gauss laser beams can be described as a continuous transition between the well-known Hermite-Gauss (HG) and Laguerre-Gauss (LG) laser beams. A spatial light modulator (SLM) was made by removing the liquid crystal display (LCD) from an overhead projector. The homemade SLM, encoded with a computer-generated hologram, was then used to convert a fundamental Gaussian beam from a small frame Helium-Neon (HeNe) laser into several different orders of Generalized-Gauss (GG) beams. The experimentally generated GG beam profiles matched the theoretically expected profiles.
Energy From Active Galactic Nuclei And The Effects On Host Spiral Galaxies, Amanda Schilling
Energy From Active Galactic Nuclei And The Effects On Host Spiral Galaxies, Amanda Schilling
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I have investigated the energy output of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in order to understand how these objects evolve and the impact they may have on host galaxies. First, I looked at a sample of 96 AGN at redshifts $z \sim 2, 3,$ and $4$ which have imaging and thus luminosity measurements in the $griz$ and $JHK$ observed wavebands. For these galaxies, I have co-epochal data across those bands which accounted for variability in AGN luminosity. I used the luminosity measurements in the five bands to construct spectral energy distributions (SED) in the emitted optical-UV bands for each AGN. I …

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the free-space measurements of a periodic metamaterial structure. The metamaterial unit cell consists of two dielectric sheets intersecting at 90 degrees. The dielectric is a polyetherimide-based material 0.001” thick. Each sheet has a copper capacitively-loaded loop (CLL) structure on the front and a cut-wire structure on the back. Foam material is used to support the unit cells. The unit cell repeats 40 times in the x-direction, 58 times in the y-direction and 5 times in the z-direction. The sample measures 12” × 12” × 1” in total. We use a free-space broadband system comprised of a pair …
Infrared Energy Conversion In Plasmonic Fields At Two-Dimensional Semiconductors, Gregory Thomas Forcherio
Infrared Energy Conversion In Plasmonic Fields At Two-Dimensional Semiconductors, Gregory Thomas Forcherio
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Conversion of infrared energy within plasmonic fields at two-dimensional, semiconductive transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) through plasmonic hot electron transport and nonlinear frequency mixing has important implications in next-generation optoelectronics. Drude-Lorentz theory and approximate discrete dipole (DDA) solutions to Maxwell’s equations guided metal nanoantenna design towards strong infrared localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Excitation and damping dynamics of LSPR in heterostructures of noble metal nanoantennas and molybdenum- or tungsten-disulfide (MoS2; WS2) monolayers were examined by parallel synthesis of (i) DDA electrodynamic simulations and (ii) near-field electron energy loss (EELS) and far-field optical transmission UV-vis spectroscopic measurements. Susceptibility to second-order nonlinear frequency …

Characterization Of Coupled Gold Nanoparticles In A Sparsely Populated Square Lattice, Roy Truett French Iii
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metal nanoparticles deposited in regular arrays spaced at optical wavelengths support a resonance due to a coherent coupling between localized surface plasmon mode and lattice diffraction allowing for engineering of tunable devices for use in biological sensors, nanoantennae, and enhanced spectroscopy. Techniques such as electron beam lithography, focused ion beam lithography, nanosphere lithography, and nanoimprint lithography are used for fabrication but are limited by cost, device throughput, and small deposition. Polymer soft lithography and continuous dewetting of particles is a potentially viable alternative showing promise in all of those areas. This thesis developed the fabrication of a refined hydrophilic nanoimprinted …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Climate change and population growth demand long-term solutions for clean water and energy. Plasmon-active nanomaterials offer a promising route towards improved energetics for efficient chemical separation and light harvesting schemes. Two material platforms featuring highly absorptive plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are advanced herein to maximize photon conversion into thermal or electronic energy. Optical extinction, attributable to diffraction-induced internal reflection, was enhanced up to 1.5-fold in three-dimensional polymer films containing AuNPs at interparticle separations approaching the resonant wavelength. Comprehensive methods developed to characterize heat dissipation following plasmonic absorption was extended beyond conventional optical and heat transfer descriptions, where good agreement was …

Discord And Global Discord In Systems Of Coupled Quantum Dots In Driven Cavities With Dissipation, And A Method For The Calculation Of Global Discord, Willa Danielle Rawlinson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the field of quantum information, which is subdivided into quantum computing and quantum cryptography, quantum correlations are essential for a performance or security boost not achievable with classical means. Various quantum correlation measures exist for evaluating a state’s potential to be a qubit (quantum bit). Entanglement, or nonseparability of quantum states, is the older, better known class of measures. However, for a mixed state, quantum entanglement is an incomplete measure of quantumness. Quantum discord, and its multibody extension global discord, encompass all quantum correlations. We study systems of coupled quantum dots using these measures.
We study the discord of …

Fabrication Of Infrared Photodetectors Utilizing Lead Selenide Nanocrystals, Justin Anthony Hill
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal lead selenide and lead selenide / lead sulfide core/shell nanocrystals were grown using a wet chemical synthesis procedure. Absorbance and photoluminescence measurements were made to verify the quality of the produced nanocrystals. Absorbance spectra were measured at room temperature, while photoluminescence spectra were measured at 77 K. Organic ligands were exchanged for shorter ligands in order to increase the conductivity of the nanocrystals. Absorption and PL spectra for both core and core/shell nanocrystals were compared. Interdigital photodetector devices with varying channel widths were fabricated by depositing gold onto a glass substrate. Lead selenide nanocrystals were deposited onto these metallic …

Study Of Plasmonic Properties Of The Gold Nanorods In The Visible To Near Infrared Light Regime, Pijush Kanti Ghosh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nanostructures of noble metals show unique plasmonic behavior in the visible to near-infrared light range. Gold nanostructures exhibit a particularly strong plasmonic response for these wavelengths of light. In this study we have investigated optical enhancement and absorption of gold nanorods with different thickness using finite element method simulations. This study reports on the resonance wavelength of the sharp-corner and round-corner rectangles of constant length 100 nm and width 60 nm. The result shows that resonance wavelength depends on the polarization of the incident light; there also exists a strong dependence of the optical enhancement and absorption on the thickness …

Viscous Liquids And The Glass Transition At Extremely High Pressure: Optical Techniques Applied To Cumene In A Diamond Anvil Cell, Timothy Craig Ransom
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the results from experiments studying the pressure-dependence of properties associated with the glass transition in the glass-forming liquid cumene. Through the use of a diamond anvil cell, we achieve extremely high pressures over 40,000 atmospheres. A new technique is refined to directly measure the glass transition temperature Tg extremely accurately, and we show that thermodynamic scaling is capable of describing the liquidglass transition boundary up to record-high pressures. Optical techniques are also implemented to probe the system dynamics in the viscous regime leading up to the glass transition. We present laser light-scattering measurements of the dynamic susceptibility …
Characterizing Nanoparticle Size By Dynamic Light Scattering Technique (Dls), Marzia Zaman
Characterizing Nanoparticle Size By Dynamic Light Scattering Technique (Dls), Marzia Zaman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Dynamic Light Scattering Technique was used to determine the size, shape and diffusion coefficient of nanoparticle. The intensity auto correlation functions of light scattered by particles in a solution were measured by using a photomultiplier tube and analyzed to get the relaxation rates for decay of intensity correlations, which correspond to the diffusion constants pertaining to the motion of the particle. In the case of nanorods there are two types of motion - translational and rotational. By dis-entangling the relaxation rates, corresponding to these two types of motion, the shape and size of nanoparticle could be characterized. These experiments, …

Atomic-Scale Characterization And Manipulation Of Freestanding Graphene Using Adapted Capabilities Of A Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Steven Barber
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Graphene was the first two-dimensional material ever discovered, and it exhibits many unusual phenomena important to both pure and applied physics. To ensure the purest electronic structure, or to study graphene's elastic properties, it is often suspended over holes or trenches in a substrate. The aim of the research presented in this dissertation was to develop methods for characterizing and manipulating freestanding graphene on the atomic scale using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Conventional microscopy and spectroscopy techniques must be carefully reconsidered to account for movement of the extremely flexible sample.
First, the acquisition of atomic-scale images of freestanding graphene …

Steady-State Switching And Dispersion/Absorption Spectroscopy Of Multistate Atoms Inside An Optical Ring Cavity, Jiteng Sheng
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis mainly focuses on the experimental investigations of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) related phenomena in various systems involving multilevel atoms inside an optical ring cavity. Semiclassical methods, e.g. density-matrix equations, are used through out this thesis to simulate the experimental results. First, the cavity transmission spectrum can be significantly modified when multilevel atoms are placed inside an optical ring cavity. Such coupled atom-cavity systems are well explained by the intracavity dispersion/absorption properties. Specifically, three-level lambda-type, four-level N-type and double-lambda-type atoms inside an optical ring cavity are investigated by examining their cavity transmission spectra. Second, optical multistability (OM) has been …
The Geometry And Sensitivity Of Ion-Beam Sculpted Nanopores For Single Molecule Dna Analysis, Ryan Connor Rollings
The Geometry And Sensitivity Of Ion-Beam Sculpted Nanopores For Single Molecule Dna Analysis, Ryan Connor Rollings
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the relationship between the geometry of ion-beam sculpted solid-state nanopores and their ability to analyze single DNA molecules using resistive pulse sensing is investigated. To accomplish this, the three dimensional shape of the nanopore is determined using energy filtered and tomographic transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that this information enables the prediction of the ionic current passing through a voltage biased nanopore and improves the prediction of the magnitude of current drop signals when the nanopore interacts with single DNA molecules. The dimensional stability of nanopores in solution is monitored using this information and is improved …
Phase Control In Atomic Coherence, Utsab Khadka
Phase Control In Atomic Coherence, Utsab Khadka
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, atomic coherence is used to enhance nonlinear optical processes in multi-level atoms. The multi-photon transitions are driven resonantly, and at the same time without absorptive losses, by using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), thereby allowing the study of χ(3) and χ(5) nonlinearities using weak driving fields. The coherently modified probe beam(s) and the atom-radiated signal fields arising from four- and six- wave- mixing (FWM and SWM) processes are measured in the spectral, temporal and spatial domains.
In a three-level ladder-type atomic system, multiple peaks having spectral asymmetries are observed in the EIT window as well as …
Polarization Properties Of Maxwell-Gauss Laser Beams, Jessica Patricia Conry
Polarization Properties Of Maxwell-Gauss Laser Beams, Jessica Patricia Conry
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Laser beams are wave-like optical disturbances. They are characterized by a dominant direction of propagation and a finite extent transverse to the direction of propagation. Many characteristics of laser beams can be described in terms of a scalar function multiplied by a constant vector, which can be real (for linear polarization) or complex (for elliptical polarization). The scalar function is a solution to the paraxial scalar wave equation. This scalar description, however, fails to describe the polarization and focusing characteristics of laser beams correctly. For a correct accounting of these characteristics, the electric and magnetic fields associated with laser beams …

Synthesis And Optical Properties Of Sprayed Zno And Zno:Ga Thin Films, N. F. Habubi, S. S. Chiad, S. Jabbar, W. Jabbar
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Characteristics and optical constants of pure and Ga-doped ZnO thin films have been studied. Pure and Ga-doped zinc oxide thin films were deposited onto glass substrates using the spray pyrolysis technique. Optical absorption studies in the wavelength range of 300–900 nm showed a peak near 450 nm for different doped films (in addition to the peak for un-doped ZnO). Increasing the doping concentration of Ga to 7% induced an increase in the optical constants of films. This increase is attributed to the formation of chargetransfer complexes. ZnO thin films doped with Ga have improved the optical transmittance in the visible …

Imaging Second-Harmonic Radiation And Scattering Patterns In Zno Micro/Nanostructures, Katrina Marie Geren
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The optical characteristics of ZnO nanostructures have recently garnered interest due to the inclusion of these structures in many nanoscale optical and optoelectronic devices. This thesis will address several characteristics involving second harmonic generation and scattering in ZnO nano- and microstructures. A method will be presented for determining the nonlinear coefficients of the second order susceptibility in a single ZnO rod. This method uses transmission geometry where previous methods have employed back-reflected irradiation. The nonlinear coefficients found using this new technique were consistent with previous data from similar structures. Models will be presented for predicting the second harmonic scattering patterns …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We have constructed a tunable, high resolution, infrared diode laser spectrometer and combined it with a pulsed supersonic jet expansion. A modified version of the Perry multipass cell has been incorporated into the spectrometer to increase the effective absorption path length. Performance capabilities of the spectrometer are evaluated by examining ro-vibrational spectra for the carbon monoxide molecule in the five micron region of the infrared. From these measurements, an instrumental absorption sensitivity is determined. Finally, since one of our immediate goals is the infrared study of jet cooled transition metal carbonyls, we present high resolution data obtained by entraining the …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We describe software developed with LabVIEW to provide operational control for an in-house infrared diode laser spectrometer that has been combined with a pulsed supersonic jet expansion sample source. Data were collected with this instrument using a modified version of the rapid-scanning method. A prerequisite in employing the rapid-scan detection scheme is that the modulation used to scan the laser be synchronized in time with the electrical signal used to trigger the pulsed gas valve. Software performance was evaluated by examining a series of rotation vibration (ro-vibrational) spectra for the carbon monoxide molecule in the five micron region of the …

Ultraviolet Spectra Of Acetic Acid, Glycine, And Glyphosate, J. Scott Mcconnell, Rose M. Mcconnell, Lloyd R. Hossner
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The influence of pH on the ultraviolet spectra of 0.001, 0.005, and 0.010 M glyphosate, glycine, and acetic acid was investigated. Each dilution of each acid was adjusted to acidic, neutral, and basic pH values. Ultraviolet spectra were recorded from 300 to 200 nm for each acid-dilution-pH combination. The wavelength of maximum absorption (Lambdamax) of glyphosate and glycine was slightly higher in the high pH solutions than in the neutral and low pH solutions. The Lambdamax of acetic acid was apparently unaffected by changes in ph. Molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) at Lambdamax increased with pH for all three acids. Regression …
