Vortex Wake And Exhaust Plume Interaction, Including Ground Effect, Ihab Gaber Adam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computational modeling and studies of the near-field wake-vortex turbulent flows, far-field turbulent wake-vortex/exhaust-plume interaction for subsonic and High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) airplane, and wake-vortex/exhaust-plume interaction with the ground are carried out. The three-dimensional, compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved using the implicit, upwind, Roe-flux-differencing, finite-volume scheme. The turbulence models of Baldwin and Lomax, one-equation model of Spalart and Allmaras and two-equation shear stress transport model of Menter are implemented with the RANS solver for turbulent-flow modeling.

For the near-field study, computations are carried out on a fine grid for a rectangular wing with a NACA-0012 airfoil section and …

Steady Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Near A Point Of Reattachment, J. M. Dorrepaal, S. Moosavizadeh Jan 1998

Steady Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Near A Point Of Reattachment, J. M. Dorrepaal, S. Moosavizadeh

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The oblique stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field is a highly nonlinear problem whose solution is of interest even in the simplest of geometries. The problem models the flow of a viscous conducting fluid near a point where a separation vortex reattaches itself to a rigid boundary. A similarity solution exists which reduces the problem to a coupled system of four ordinary differential equations which can be integrated numerically. The problem has two independent parameters, the conductivity of the fluid and the strength of the magnetic field. Solutions are tabulated for a …

Investigation Of Drag Reduction On A Two-Dimensional Circular Cylinder By Ejecting Jet From The Rear Stagnation Region, Satoshi Atsuchi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Extensive work in the field of drag reduction has been done in the past. However, this field of study is highly desirable today because of various high-speed research programs. The present study attempts to investigate the feasibility of drag reduction on a cylinder by flow injection from the rear stagnation region. A two-dimensional circular cylinder at Reynolds number l x105with a jet ejected from its tail is selected as a physical model. To tackle this problem, a numerical simulation as well as an experimental approach were used. Despite the recent development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computing a …

The Effect Of Three-Dimensional Freestream Disturbances On The Supersonic Flow Past A Wedge, Peter W. Duck, D. Glenn Lasseigne, M. Y. Hussaini

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The interaction between a shock wave (attached to a wedge) and small amplitude, three-dimensional disturbances of a uniform, supersonic, freestream flow are investigated. The paper extends the two-dimensional study of Duck et al. [P W. Duck, D. G. Lasseigne, and M. Y. Hussaini, ''On the interaction between the shock wave attached to a wedge and freestream disturbances,'' Theor. Comput. Fluid Dyn. 7, 119 (1995) (also ICASE Report No. 93-61)] through the use of vector potentials, which render the problem tractable by the same techniques as in the two-dimensional case, in particular by expansion of the solution by means of …

A Study Of The Numerical Implementation Of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Strategies, Rodney A. Taylor Jul 1996

A Study Of The Numerical Implementation Of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Strategies, Rodney A. Taylor

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Design optimization provides an organized, systematic, and efficient method for obtaining design improvements based upon a specified measure of design performance. In the multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) environment efficient optimization techniques allow complex designs to be improved by managing conflicting disciplinary design goals so as to improve the global design. This thesis studies the implementation issues surrounding MDO techniques and strategies. To facilitate this investigation two testbed problems have been selected for study. These problems consider two approaches to the conceptual design of an aeroelastic wing. The first approach is based on an idealized, two-dimensional representation of an airfoil under …

The Stability Of Compressible Mixing Layers In Binary Gases, F. Kozusko, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch, T. L. Jackson

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We present the results of a study of the inviscid two-dimensional spatial stability of a parallel compressible mixing layer in a binary gas. The parameters of this study are the Mach number of the fast stream, the ratio of the velocity of the slow stream to that of the fast stream, the ratio of the temperatures, the composition of the gas in the slow stream and in the fast stream, and the frequency of the disturbance wave. The ratio of the molecular weight of the slow stream to that of the fast stream is found to be an important quantity …

Studies Of Mixing Processes In Gases And Effects On Combustion And Stability, Frank Paul Kozusko Jr. Jul 1995

Studies Of Mixing Processes In Gases And Effects On Combustion And Stability, Frank Paul Kozusko Jr.

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Three physical models of laminar mixing of initially separated gases are studied. Two models study the effects of the mixing dynamics on the chemical reactions between the gases. The third model studies the structure and stability of a laminar mixing layer in a binary gas. The three models are:

1. Two ideal and incompressible gases representing fuel and oxidizer are initially at rest and separated across an infinite linear interface in a two dimensional system. Combustion, expected as the gases mix, will lead to a rapid rise in temperature in a localized area, i.e. ignition. The mixing of the gases …

Wing-Section Optimization For Supersonic Viscous Flow, Cem Cihan Item Apr 1995

Wing-Section Optimization For Supersonic Viscous Flow, Cem Cihan Item

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The recent interest in the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) has resulted in renewed research studies of optimized supersonic cruise transport configurations. Incorporation of flow viscosity effects in the design process of such a supersonic wing is currently under investigation. This may lead to more accurate problem formulations and, in tum, greater aerodynamic efficiency than can be obtained by the traditional, inviscid, linear theories. In this context, for a design code to be a candidate for a complex optimization problem, such as three-dimensional viscous supersonic wing design, it should be validated using simpler building-block shapes.

To optimize the shape of …

Growth Characteristics Downstream Of A Shallow Bump: Computation And Experiment, Ronald D. Joslin, Chester E. Grosch Jan 1995

Growth Characteristics Downstream Of A Shallow Bump: Computation And Experiment, Ronald D. Joslin, Chester E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

Measurements of the velocity field created by a shallow bump on a wall revealed that an energy peak in the spanwise spectrum associated with the driver decays and an initially small-amplitude secondary mode rapidly grows with distance downstream of the bump. Linear theories could not provide an explanation for this growing mode. The present Navier-Stokes simulation replicates and confirms the experimental results. Insight into the structure of the flow was obtained from a study of the results of the calculations and is presented.

Simulation Of Active Control Of Asymmetric Flows Around Slender Pointed Forebodies, Hazem Sharaf El-Din Oct 1994

Simulation Of Active Control Of Asymmetric Flows Around Slender Pointed Forebodies, Hazem Sharaf El-Din

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

At high angles of attack, the flowfield over slender forebodies becomes asymmetric with substantial side force, which may exceed the available control capability. The unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations are used to investigate the effectiveness of different active control methods to alleviate and possibly eliminate the flow asymmetry and the subsequent side force. Although the research work focuses on active control methods, a passive control method has been investigated. The implicit, Roe flux-difference splitting, finite volume scheme is used for the numerical computations. Both locally-conical and three-dimensional solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are obtained.

The asymmetric flow over five-degree semi-apex angle …

Investigation Of Computational And Spectral Analysis Methods For Aeroacoustic Wave Propagation, Florence Odile Vanel Jul 1994

Investigation Of Computational And Spectral Analysis Methods For Aeroacoustic Wave Propagation, Florence Odile Vanel

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Most computational fluid dynamics (CFD) schemes are not adequately accurate for solving aeroacoustics problems, which have wave amplitudes several orders of magnitude smaller yet with frequencies larger than the flow field variations generating the sound. Hence, a computational aeroacoustics (CAA) algorithm should have minimal dispersion and dissipation features. A dispersion relation preserving (DRP) scheme is, therefore, applied to solve the linearized Euler equations in order to simulate the propagation of three types of waves, namely: acoustic, vorticity, and entropy waves. The scheme is derived using an optimization procedure to ensure that the numerical derivatives preserve the wave number and angular …

Unsteady Flow Simulations About Moving Boundary Configurations Using Dynamic Domain Decomposition Techniques, Guan-Wei Yen Apr 1994

Unsteady Flow Simulations About Moving Boundary Configurations Using Dynamic Domain Decomposition Techniques, Guan-Wei Yen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A computational method is developed to solve the coupled governing equations of an unsteady flowfield and those of rigid-body dynamics in six degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF). This method is capable of simulating the unsteady flowfields around multiple component configurations with at least one of the components in relative motion with respect to the others. Two of the important phenomena that such analyses can help us to understand are the unsteady aerodynamic interference and the boundary-induced component of such a flowfield. By hybridizing two dynamic domain decomposition techniques, the grid generation task is simplified, the computer memory requirement is reduced, and the governing …

A Direct Numerical Simulation Of Vortex Breakdown Induced Tail Buffet, Steven James Massey Apr 1994

A Direct Numerical Simulation Of Vortex Breakdown Induced Tail Buffet, Steven James Massey

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A simulation of tail buffet is presented for a delta wing-vertical tail configuration. Flow conditions are chosen such that the wing primary-vortex cores experience vortex breakdown and the resulting turbulent wake flow impinges on the vertical tail. The dimensions and material properties of the vertical tail are chosen such that the deflections are large enough to insure interaction with the flow, and the natural frequencies are high enough to facilitate a practical computational solution. This multidisciplinary problem is solved sequentially for the fiuid flow, the elastic deformations and the grid displacements. The fluid flow is simulated by time accurately solving …

Flow Simulations About Steady-Complex And Unsteady Moving Configurations Using Structured-Overlapped And Unstructured Grids, James Charles Newman Iii Apr 1994

Flow Simulations About Steady-Complex And Unsteady Moving Configurations Using Structured-Overlapped And Unstructured Grids, James Charles Newman Iii

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The limiting factor in simulating flows past realistic configurations of interest has been the discretization of the physical domain on which the governing equations of fluid flow may be solved. In an attempt to circumvent this problem, many Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) methodologies that are based on different grid generation and domain decomposition techniques have been developed. However, due to the costs involved and expertise required, very few comparative studies between these methods have been performed. In the present work, the two CFD methodologies which show the most promise for treating complex three-dimensional configurations as well as unsteady moving boundary …

Multigrid Acceleration Of Time-Dependent Solutions Of Navier-Stokes Equations, Sarafa Oladele Ibraheem Jan 1994

Multigrid Acceleration Of Time-Dependent Solutions Of Navier-Stokes Equations, Sarafa Oladele Ibraheem

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent progress in Computational Fluid Dynamics is encouraging scientists to look at fine details of flow physics of problems in which natural unsteady phenomena have hitherto been neglected. The acceleration methods that have proven very successful in steady state computations can be explored for time dependent computations. In this work, an efficient multigrid methods is developed to solve the time-dependent Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The Beam-Warming ADI method is used as the base algorithm for time stepping calculations. Application of the developed algorithm proved very efficient in selected steady and unsteady test problems. For instance, the inherent unsteadiness present in …

Simulation Of Vertical Tail Buffet In Internal Vortex Breakdown Flows, Mark William Flanagan Oct 1993

Simulation Of Vertical Tail Buffet In Internal Vortex Breakdown Flows, Mark William Flanagan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computational simulation of vertical tail buffet in an internal vortex breakdown flow is considered. The fiuid-flow problem is formulated using the full, compressible, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations which are solved using an implicit, flux-difference splitting, finite volume scheme. The fluid-flow problem is solved in a configured circular duct using quasi-axisymmetric assumptions to simplify the flow equations. A plate is placed transverse to the incoming flow. Solution of the flow in the duct is performed with and without a rigid plate, and with and without an elastic plate. The elastic response of the plate is calculated assuming that it is a cantilever …

Absolute-Convective Instabilities And Their Associated Wave Packets In A Compressible Reacting Mixing Layer, F. Q. Hu, T. L. Jackson, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch Jan 1993

Absolute-Convective Instabilities And Their Associated Wave Packets In A Compressible Reacting Mixing Layer, F. Q. Hu, T. L. Jackson, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper the transition from convective to absolute instability in a reacting compressible mixing layer with finite rate chemistry is examined. The reaction is assumed to be one step, irreversible, and of Arrhenius type. It is shown that absolute instability can exist for moderate heat release without backflow. The effects of the temperature ratio, heat release parameter, Zeldovich number, equivalence ratio, direction of propagation of the disturbances, and the Mach number on the transition value of the velocity ratio are given. The present results are compared to those obtained from the flame sheet model for the temperature using the …

A Numerical Study Of Wave Propagation In A Confined Mixing Layer By Eigenfunction Expansions, Fang Q. Hu Jan 1993

A Numerical Study Of Wave Propagation In A Confined Mixing Layer By Eigenfunction Expansions, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It is well known that the growth rate of instability waves of a two-dimensional free shear layer is reduced greatly at supersonic convective Mach numbers. In previous works, it has been shown that new wave modes exist when the shear layers are bounded by a channel due to the coupling effect between the acoustic wave modes and the motion of the mixing layer. The present work studies the simultaneous propagation of multiple stability waves using numerical simulation. It is shown here that the coexistence of two wave modes in the flow field can lead to an oscillatory growth of disturbance …

Induced Mach Wave-Flame Interactions In Laminar Supersonic Fuel Jets, F. Q. Hu, T. L. Jackson, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch Jan 1993

Induced Mach Wave-Flame Interactions In Laminar Supersonic Fuel Jets, F. Q. Hu, T. L. Jackson, D. G. Lasseigne, C. E. Grosch

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A model problem is proposed to investigate the steady response of a reacting, compressible laminar jet to Mach waves generated by wavy walls in a channel of finite width. The model consists of a two-dimensional jet of fuel emerging into a stream of oxidizer which are allowed to mix and react in the presence of the Mach waves. The governing equations are taken to be the steady parabolized Navier-Stokes equations which are solved numerically. The kinetics is assumed to be a one-step, irreversible reaction of the Arrhenius type. Two important questions on the Mach wave-flame interactions are discussed: (i) how …

Experimental Investigation Of Crossflow Instability Waves In Rotating Disk Flow, Alan E. Blanchard Jul 1992

Experimental Investigation Of Crossflow Instability Waves In Rotating Disk Flow, Alan E. Blanchard

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

For the past 40 years, the crossflow (or inflectional) instability associated with rotating disk flow has been generally assumed to be a pure vortex that is fixed with respect to the disk; however, the terms "wave" and "vortex" have also been used interchangeably throughout the computational and experimental literature to describe this instability. Through the use of both hot-wire surveys and smoke-wire flow visualizations in the present investigation, the existence of crossflow instability waves prior to vortex formation has been shown. The results of the hot-wire surveys and smoke-wire flow visualizations for both a "clean" disk case and a disk …

Temperature And Suction Effects On The Instability Of An Infinite Swept Attachment Line, D. G. Lasseigne, T. L. Jackson, F. Q. Hu Jan 1992

Temperature And Suction Effects On The Instability Of An Infinite Swept Attachment Line, D. G. Lasseigne, T. L. Jackson, F. Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It is known that the incompressible, infinite swept attachment line flow is unstable to streamwise disturbances that originate in the boundary layer when the cross-flow exceeds a critical magnitude. Furthermore, a small degree of suction at the surface has a significant stabilizing influence while a small degree of blowing has a considerable destabilizing influence. This paper investigates the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of, respectively, cooling or heating the plate and the competing or enhancing effects of suction or blowing. A nonorthogonal flow with respect to the attachment line is also considered by adding a component of shear to the mean …

Application Of Sensitivity Analysis To The Euler Equations, Vamshi Mohan Korivi Jul 1991

Application Of Sensitivity Analysis To The Euler Equations, Vamshi Mohan Korivi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An approximation method is presented for efficiently predicting the changes which occur in a steady-state numerical solution of the Euler equations as a consequence of a small change in the geometric shape of the domain. The method is extended to develop a general procedure for calculating aerodynamic sensitivity derivatives with respect to variations of geometric shape. The techniques are implemented using an upwind cell centered finite volume formulation, and are applied to two test cases, (1) a subsonic nozzle (M∞ = 0.85), and (2) a supersonic inlet (M∞ = 2.0). Conventional numerical solutions are first obtained for flow …

On Shock Capturing For Liquid And Gas Media, Tze Jang Chen Jul 1991

On Shock Capturing For Liquid And Gas Media, Tze Jang Chen

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The numerical investigation of shock phenomena in gas or liquid media where a specifying relation for internal energy is absent poses special problems. Classically, for gas dynamics the usual procedure is to employ a splitting scheme to remove the source terms from the Euler equations, then up-wind biased shock capturing algorithms are built around the Riemann problem for the system which remains. However, in the case where the Euler equations are formulated in the term of total enthalpy, a technical difficulty associated with equation splitting forces a pressure time derivative to be treated as a source term. This makes it …

Nonlinear-Interaction Of A Detonation Vorticity Wave, D. G. Lasseigne, T. L. Jackson, M. Y. Hussaini Jan 1991

Nonlinear-Interaction Of A Detonation Vorticity Wave, D. G. Lasseigne, T. L. Jackson, M. Y. Hussaini

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The interaction of an oblique, overdriven detonation wave with a vorticity disturbance is investigated by a direct two-dimensional numerical simulation using a multidomain, finite-difference solution of the compressible Euler equations. The results are compared to those of linear theory, which predict that the effect of exothermicity on the interaction is relatively small except possibly near a critical angle where linear theory no longer holds. It is found that the steady-state computational results whenever obtained in this study agree with the results of linear theory. However, for cases with incident angle near the critical angle, moderate disturbance amplitudes, and/or sudden transient …

Parametric Instability Of Supersonic Shear Layers Induced By Periodic Mach Waves, Fang Q. Hu, Christopher K. W. Tam Jan 1991

Parametric Instability Of Supersonic Shear Layers Induced By Periodic Mach Waves, Fang Q. Hu, Christopher K. W. Tam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It is suggested that parametric instability can be induced in a confined supersonic shear layer by the use of a periodic Mach wave system generated by a wavy wall. The existence of such an instability solution is demonstrated computationally by solving the Floquet system of equations. The solution is constructed by means of a Fourier-Chebyshev expansion. Numerical convergence is assured by using a very large number of Fourier and Chebyshev basis functions. The computed growth rate of the induced flow instability is found to vary linearly with the amplitude of the mach waves when the amplitude is not excessively large. …

Effect Of Passive Flow-Control Devices On The Drug Of A Tractor-Trailer Model, Jagjit K. Ahuja Jan 1991

Effect Of Passive Flow-Control Devices On The Drug Of A Tractor-Trailer Model, Jagjit K. Ahuja

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aerodynamic drag of tractor trailers is responsible for approximately half of the fuel consumption at highway speeds (55m.p.h.). Thus, it is important that vehicle drag be reduced in order to reduce operating costs and to conserve fuel. The purpose of the subject research conducted in the Old Dominion University Low-Speed Wind Tunnel was to determine the effect of various add-on flow-control devices, such as a cab-mounted flow deflector and gap seals between the tractor and the trailer. In addition, the effect of trailer rear-edge shaping has been studied. This was accomplished by contouring the trailer's rear end. It has …

Use Of A Generalized Set Of Variables In Fluid Flow Calculations, Pawel Chwalowski Jul 1990

Use Of A Generalized Set Of Variables In Fluid Flow Calculations, Pawel Chwalowski

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In fluid flow calculations, a set of generalized field variables is used to replace the more conventional choice of either the conserved variables, or the primitive variables. This generalized set of variables represents an infinite number of possible choices for the specific set of field variables. For algorithms of both the implicit and explicit type, the resulting effect of a change in field variables on a steady-state flow solution is in general relatively small. However, for implicit algorithms, a consistent linearization with respect to the new variables results in dramatic changes in the overall matrix conditioning of the linear systems …

Navier-Stokes Analysis Of Cold Gas Scramjet Nozzle-Afterbody Flowfields, Walter C. Engelund Oct 1989

Navier-Stokes Analysis Of Cold Gas Scramjet Nozzle-Afterbody Flowfields, Walter C. Engelund

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The recent renewal of interest in hypersonic aerodynamics, brought about largely in part due to the development of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP), is resulting in an increased reliance on computational fluid dynamics for flowfield data in this flight regime. The design of the nozzle-afterbody section for a hypersonic transport such as the NASP is currently underway, and is being conducted using both computational fluid dynamics and cold, non-reacting, simulant gas experimental models. In this study, a computational analysis is conducted for the flow through a scramjet nozzle-afterbody test section.

Computations have been performed for a cold gas simulation of …

Domain Decomposition For Multigrid, Finite Volume Flow Solvers, Victor Robert Lessard Oct 1989

Domain Decomposition For Multigrid, Finite Volume Flow Solvers, Victor Robert Lessard

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computing the flow fields about three-dimensional complex configurations accurately becomes a difficult task, if it is attempted to generate a single, body fitted grid with proper clustering. The domain decomposition methods, which divide the computational domain into less complex subdomains, are extensively used to decrease the grid generation workload. A domain decomposition technique also allows the use of different solution methods for different subdomains. The objective of this work is to develop a domain decomposition method via overlapping/embedding the component grids, which is to be used by upwind, multigrid, finite volume solution algorithms. A computer code, given the name MaGGiE, …
