Cylindrical capacitive discharge is a convenient medium for generating reactive ions to process inner walls superconductive radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. These cavities, used in particle accelerators, presents a three-dimensional structure made of bulk Niobium, with axial cylindrical symmetry. Manufactured cavity walls are covered with Niobium oxides and scattered particulates, which must be removed for desired SRF performance. Cylindrical capacitive discharge in a mixture of Ar and Cl2 is a sole and natural non-wet acid choice to purify the inner surfaces of SRF cavities by reactive ion etching. The Old Dominion University Compact Light Source (ODU CLS) design concept is presented-a compact Inverse Compton Light Source (ICLS) with flux and brilliance orders of magnitude beyond conventional laboratory-scale sources and greater than other compact ICLS designs. This concept utilizes the physics of inverse Compton scattering of an extremely low emittance electron beam by a laser pulse of rms length of approximately two-thirds of a picosecond (2/3 ps). The accelerator is composed of a superconducting radio frequency (SRF) reentrant gun followed by four double-spoke SRF cavities. Despite decades of studies of the photoproduction of hyperons, both their production mechanisms and their spectra of excited states are still largely unknown. While the parity-violating weak decay of hyperons offers a means of measuring their polarization, which could help discern their production mechanisms and identify their excitation spectra, no such study has been possible for doubly strange baryons in photoproduction, due to low production cross sections. The azimuthal anisotropic flow of identified and unidentified charged particles has been systematically studied in Cu+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV for harmonics n = 1–4 in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 1. The directed flow in Cu+Au collisions is compared with the rapidity-odd and, for the first time, the rapidity-even components of charged particle directed flow in Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 20 GeV. The slope of the directed flow pseudorapidity dependence in Cu+Au collisions is found to be similar to that in Au+Au collisions, with the intercept shifted toward positive pseudorapidity values, i.e., the Cu-going direction. The mean transverse momentum projected onto the spectator plane ⟨px⟩ in Cu+Au collision also exhibits approximately linear dependence on pseudorapidity with the intercept …

Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process γp 0[e+e(γ)] with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of Eγ = 1.275–5.425 GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state π0, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of t and u, has been measured for the first time. The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental nucleon-structure observables that characterize its response to external electromagnetic fields. The neutron polarizabilities can be accessed from Compton-scattering data on light nuclear targets. Recent measurements of the differential cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron below the pion-production threshold have decreased the uncertainties in the neutron polarizabilities, yet the proton polarizabilities remain known substantially more accurately. As the sensitivity of the cross section to the polarizabilities increases with incident photon energy, measurements above the pion threshold may offer a way for an improved determination of the neutron polarizabilities. We report measurements of the nuclear modification factor RCP for charged hadrons as well as identified π+(−), K+(−), and p(p¯) for Au + Au collision energies of √sNN = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV. We observe a clear high-pT net suppression in central collisions at 62.4 GeV for charged hadrons which evolves smoothly to a large net enhancement at lower energies. This trend is driven by the evolution of the pion spectra but is also very similar for the kaon spectra. While the magnitude of the proton RCP …

The elastic I = 1/2, s- and p-wave kaon-pion scattering amplitudes are calculated using a single ensemble of anisotropic lattice QCD gauge field configurations with Nf = 2+1 flavors of dynamical Wilson-clover fermions at mπ = 230MeV. A large spatial extent of L = 3.7fm enables a good energy resolution while partial wave mixing due to the reduced symmetries of the finite volume is treated explicitly. The p-wave amplitude is well described by a Breit–Wigner shape with parameters mK⁎/mπ = 3.808(18) and gBWKKπ = 5.33(20) which …

The exciting work in high energy physics includes not only the analysis of the data taken by the experiment but also the development of detection systems. In this thesis, the results of a search for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark (tH) are presented. This process is of particular interest due to its sensitivity to the relative sign of the top-Higgs coupling and the vector bosons-Higgs coupling. The focus is on leptonic signatures provided by the H → W W , H → τ τ , and H → ZZ decay modes.

Spatially nonlocal matrix elements are useful lattice-QCD observables in a variety of contexts, for example in determining hadron structure. To quote credible estimates of the systematic uncertainties in these calculations, one must understand, among other things, the size of the finite-volume effects when such matrix elements are extracted from numerical lattice calculations. In this work, we estimate finite- volume effects for matrix elements of nonlocal operators, composed of two currents displaced in a spatial direction by a distance ξ. We incorporate recent calculations of one-loop corrections for the reduced Ioffe-time pseudo-distribution m(v, z(3)(2) thorn to extend the leading-logarithm analysis of lattice data obtained by Orginos et al. We observe that the one-loop corrections contain a large term reflecting the fact that effective distances involved in the most important diagrams are much smaller than the nominal distance z(3). The large correction in this case may be absorbed into the evolution term, and the perturbative expansion used for extraction of parton densities at the μ ≈ 2 GeV scale is under control. The cross section for coherent ω-meson photoproduction off the deuteron has been measured for the first time as a function of the momentum transfer t=(Pγ−Pω)2 and photon energy Eγ using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cross sections are measured in the energy range 1.4 γ<3.4 GeV. A model based on ω−N rescattering is consistent with the data at low and intermediate momentum transfer, |t|. For 2.8 γ<3.4 GeV, the total cross-section of ω−N scattering, based on fits within the framework of the Vector Meson Dominance model, is in the range of 30–40 mb.

An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) has been proposed and supported as the next major nuclear physics facility in the United States, with very high design luminosities of 1033 − 1034 cm−2 s−1. The Jefferson Lab EIC concept, JLEIC, includes construction of a new ion beam accelerator complex. To achieve the required luminosity, the JLEIC ion collider requires unprecedentedly short ion bunches of 1 cm length at a high repetition frequency of 476 MHZ. We study control of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) driven by time-delayed, few-cycle ω and 2ω counterrotating mid-IR pulses. Our numerical and analytical study shows that the time delay between the two-color pulses allows control of the harmonic positions, both those allowed by angular momentum conservation and those seemingly forbidden by it. Moreover, the helicity of any particular harmonic is tunable from left to right circular without changing the driving pulse helicity. The highest HHG yield occurs for a time delay comparable to the fundamental period T = 2π/ω.

WIMP-nucleon scattering is analyzed at order 1/M in Heavy WIMP Effective Theory. The 1/M power corrections, where M ≫ mW is the WIMP mass, distinguish between different underlying UV models with the same universal limit and their impact on direct detection rates can be enhanced relative to naive expectations due to generic amplitude-level cancellations at leading order. The necessary one- and two-loop matching calculations onto the low-energy effective theory for WIMP interactions with Standard Model quarks and gluons are performed for the case of an electroweak SU(2) triplet WIMP, considering both the cases of elementary fermions and …

Many of the various properties of neutrinos are still a mystery. One unknown is whether neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. Cuoricino and CUORE are experiments that aim to solve this mystery. Noise reduction in these experiments hinges on the ability to discern among alpha, beta and gamma particle detections using the thermal pulses they create. In this paper, we look at Cuoricino data and attempt to classify pulses, not as alpha, beta or gamma particles, but rather as signal, noise or calibration data. Triple-differential cross sections (TDCS) are presented for the electron and positron impact ionization of inert gas atoms in a range of geometries where a number of significant few body effects compete to define the shape of the TDCS. Using both positrons and electrons as projectiles has opened up the possibility of performing complementary studies which could effectively isolate competing interactions which cannot be separately detected in an experiment with a single projectile. We construct predictions for top quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders that combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations with double resummation at NNLL′ accuracy of threshold logarithms arising from soft gluon emissions and of small mass logarithms. This is the first time a resummed calculation at full NNLO+NNLL′ accuracy in QCD for a process with non-trivial color structure has been completed at the differential level. Of main interest to us is the stability of the $M_{t\bar{t}}$ and top-quark $p_T$ distributions in the boosted regime where fixed order calculations may become strongly dependent on the choice of dynamic scales. As the LHC experiments increase their statistics and reduce their systematics, it is in- creasingly important to reduce the theoretical uncertainties so we can perform precision com- parisons. The parton distribution functions (PDFs) which describe the hadronic structure of protons and nuclei are the critical link between the experimental data and the proposed theoretical models; hence, a better understanding of the PDFs is essential for improved pre- dictions. Nuclear PDFs, in particular, have proven valuable in this regard, especially for flavor differentiation. The photoproduction of ω mesons off the proton has been studied in the reaction γp using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the target asymmetry T has been measured in photoproduction from the decay ωπ+ππ0, using a transversely polarized target with energies ranging from just above the reaction threshold up to 2.8 GeV. We study the nonperturbative formulation of three-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity defined via dynamical triangulations (DT). A lattice representation of the Einstein-Hilbert action is modified to include a nontrivial local measure term with free parameter �. We’ve used Monte Carlo and finite-size scaling techniques to locate and analyze the corresponding phase diagram, finding evidence of two metastable states separated by a line of first-order geometric transitions. After fine-tuning the bare couplings to values near this boundary, the running latent heat, as measured by the distance between peaks in a histogram of our order parameter, is shown to grow smaller as � …

We present a theoretical analysis showing how chirp can be used to sculpt two-color driving laser field waveforms in order to enhance high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and/or extend HHG cutoff energies. Specifically, we consider driving laser field waveforms composed of two ultrashort pulses having different carrier frequencies in each of which a linear chirp is introduced. Two pairs of carrier frequencies of the component pulses are considered: (ω, 2ω) and (ω, 3ω). Our results show how changing the signs of the chirps in each of the two component pulses leads to drastic changes in the HHG spectra. Our theoretical analysis …

A typical factorization formula for production of a particle with a small transverse momentum in hadron-hadron collisions is given by a convolution of two TMD parton densities with cross section of production of the final particle by the two partons. For practical applications at a given transverse momentum, though, one should estimate at what momenta the power corrections to the TMD factorization formula become essential. We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, ep → e'nπ+, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The ϕ∗ π-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs). These non-perturbative objects are defined as matrix elements of threequark-light-cone-operators and characterize partonic correlations with a particular emphasis on baryon charge distribution inside a nucleon.

Primordial black holes are thought to have been formed at the early stages of the universe in the presence of non-homogeneous density distributions of dark matter. We are working under the assumption that dark matter consists of elementary low mass particles, specifically, spin 1/2 fermions. We further assume that dark matter is electrically neutral, thus its main interaction is gravitational. We investigate dark matter spin 1/2 fermions in orbit around a black hole atom and consider mass ranges for which the quantum description is appropriate. Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. Background: The neutron β-decay asymmetry parameter A0 defines the angular correlation between the spin of the neutron and the momentum of the emitted electron. Values for A0 permit an extraction of the ratio of the weak axial-vector to vector coupling constants, λ ≡ gA/gV, which under assumption of the conserved vector current hypothesis (gV = 1) determines gA. Precise values for gA are important as a benchmark for lattice QCD calculations and as a test of the standard model.

An energy tuning assembly (ETA) was previously designed and built for the purpose of irradiating samples with a combination of a thermonuclear and a prompt fission neutron spectrum. Initial research was performed to characterize the performance of the ETA at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-Inch Cyclotron using 33 MeV deuteron breakup on tantalum as the neutron source. This research analyzes detector responses collected from three EJ-309 detectors used to characterize the ETA generated neutron field. We consider the possibility of neutron-antineutron (nn¯) conversion, in which the change of a neutron into an antineutron is mediated by an external source, as can occur in a scattering process. We develop the connections between nn¯ conversion and nn¯ oscillation, in which a neutron spontaneously transforms into an antineutron, noting that if nn¯ oscillation occurs in a theory with baryon number minus lepton number (B-L) violation, then nn¯ conversion can occur also.
