Using Heavy Flavors To Study New Physics, Kristopher Jason Healey Jan 2013

Using Heavy Flavors To Study New Physics, Kristopher Jason Healey

Wayne State University Dissertations

In this doctoral dissertation I discuss the possible standard model contributions to select leptonic heavy meson decay modes. Included are calculations of soft photon contributions to a di-lepton decay of B-mesons as well as two-particle hadronic unitary contributions to the rare di-leptonic decay of the neutral D meson. Additionally, constraints are calculated for two super-WIMP dark matter models from rare heavy flavor decays.

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung Jan 2006

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung

Honors Theses

Classical electromagnetism predicts two massless propagating modes, which are known as the two polarizations of the photon. On the other hand, if the Lorentz symmetry of classical electromagnetism is spontaneously broken, the new theory will still have two massless Nambu-Goldstone modes resembling the photon. If the Lorentz symmetry is broken by a bumblebee potential that allows for excitations out of the minimum, then massive modes arise. Furthermore, in curved spacetime, such massive modes will be created through a process other than the usual Higgs mechanism because of the dependence of the bumblebee potential on both the vector field and the …

We studied the exclusive reaction ep → e' p' ᵠ using the ᵠ →K+K- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Our experiment covers the range in Q2 from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV2and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of ᵠ production on the proton. Our measurement shows the expected decrease of the t slope with the vector-meson formation time c Δ t …

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos, Zamri Zainal Abidin Jan 2000

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos, Zamri Zainal Abidin

Student Works (2000-2009)

Using the stopping power of matter. the effects of oscillations on the energy losses of solar neutrinos are investigated. The adiabatic and non-adiabatic survival probabilities of the neutrino oscillations, the mixing angles and Am² are the parameter.; in the calculations. The total energy losses for ⁸B neutrinos with maximum spectral energy of 14.06 MeV is 5 x 10⁻⁷ MeV and is slightly lower than the losses from the non-adiabatic conversion which is ~7 x 10⁻⁷ MeV. From the calculation, we found that the maximum total energy loss for solar neutrinos is of the order 10⁻⁶ MeV. We also include the …
