Thermal, Magnetic, And Electrical Properties Of Thin Films And Nanostructures: From Magnetic Insulators To Organic Thermoelectrics, Michael J. M. Roos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern fabrication and growth techniques allow for the development of increasingly smaller and more complex solid state structures, the characterization of which require highly specialized measurement platforms. In this dissertation I present the development of techniques and instrumentation used in magnetic, thermal, and electrical property measurements of thin films and nanostructures. The understanding of trapped-flux induced artifacts in SQUID magnetometry of large paramagnetic substrates allows for the resolution of increasingly small moments. Using these methods, the antiferromagnetic coupling of the interface between a Y3Fe5O12 film and Gd3Ga5O12substrate is quantitatively …

Size-Controlled Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles Enclosed In Carbon Nanocages, Felicity Peebles, Grigorii Rudakov, Gamini U. Sumanasekera

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

We have demonstrated a simple, scalable, and tunable method of obtaining densely packed Ni Nanoparticles encapsulated in Carbon Nanocages (Ni@CNCs). Using a facile method, it was shown that via a simple annealing process of precursor based on nickel acetate and citric acid, Ni@CNCs with sizes varying from 5 to 20 nm can be synthesized by changing the heating ramp rate during the synthesis from 25 to 53 °C/min. The final temperature of 600 °C was held for 10 min, and was the same for all the samples. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) multiple peaks analysis was performed to show large Ni nanoparticles …

Synthesis And Fundamental Property Studies Of Energy Material Under High Pressure., Meysam Akhtar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, high-pressure science and technology has flourished and rapidly advanced to impact a wide domain of materials and physical sciences. One of the most substantial technological developments is the integration of samples at ultrahigh pressure with a wide range of in-situ probing techniques. Applications of extreme pressure have significantly enriched our understanding of the electronic, phonon, and doping effects on the newly emerged two-dimensional (2D) materials. Under high pressure, materials’ atomic volume radically decreases, and electronic density rises, which will lead to extraordinary chemical reaction kinetic and mechanisms. The promising capability of high pressure combine with the significance of novel …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermoelectric Nanomaterials, Kamal Kadel Mar 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermoelectric Nanomaterials, Kamal Kadel

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As existing energy sources have been depleting at a fast pace, thermoelectric (TE) materials have received much attention in recent years because of their role in clean energy generation and conversion. Thermoelectric materials hold promise in terrestrial applications such as waste heat recovery. Bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3), lead telluride (PbTe), skutterudites CoSb3, and Bi-Sb alloys are among the widely investigated thermoelectric materials.

Synthesis of above mentioned thermoelectric materials in nanostructured form and their characterization were investigated. Highly crystalline Bi2Se3, undoped and indium (In) doped PbTe, unfilled and ytterbium (Yb) filled CoSb …
