Optimization Of Materials For Magnetic Refrigeration And Thermomagnetic Power Generation, Anthony N. Tantillo
Optimization Of Materials For Magnetic Refrigeration And Thermomagnetic Power Generation, Anthony N. Tantillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The magnetocaloric effect, by which a magnetic material experiences a change in temperature due to an applied magnetic field, can be used for refrigeration. The corollary to the magnetocaloric effect -- known as the pyromagnetic effect -- is the phenomenon by which a magnetic material experiences a thermally-induced change in magnetization that can be used to harvest thermal energy. This dissertation has two main parts: one focusing on novel materials for energy harvesting; and another focusing on methods of materials discovery for refrigeration purposes. Thermomagnetic power generation (TMG) is the process by which magnetic flux, which comes from a temperature-driven …
Quantum Transport In Topological Magnets, Haiming Deng
Quantum Transport In Topological Magnets, Haiming Deng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the past several years, a new field of symmetry-protected topological materials has emerged in condensed matter physics, based on the wide range of consequences that result from the realization that certain properties of physical systems can be expressed as topological invariants, which are insensitive to local perturbations. This new class of materials hosts unique surface/edge states, such as the first known topological system – quantum Hall insulator with dissipationless chiral edge states, and massless spin-helical Dirac surface states in 3D topological insulators that are unlike any other known 1D or 2D electronic systems. In this thesis, to understand the …

First-Principles Density Functional Theory Studies On Perovskite Materials, Aneer Lamichhane
Dissertations
Perovskites are a family of materials with a diverse combination of different elements. As a consequence, they exhibit numerous functionalities such as pyroelectric, piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and ferromagnetic with applications in photovoltaic cells, LEDs, superconductivity, colossal magneto-resistance, and topological insulators. After 2009, perovskites have gained notoriety as suitable materials for solar cells and alternative candidates to silicon-based conventional solar cells. Generally, oxide perovskites exhibit good dielectric properties, halide perovskites display good photonic qualities, and chalcogenide perovskites are used in applications in solid-state lighting, sensing, and energy harvesting. In this dissertation, various types of perovskites ranging from oxide to halide are investigated …
Investigation Of Topological Phonons In Discrete Mechanical Metamaterials, Kai Qian
Investigation Of Topological Phonons In Discrete Mechanical Metamaterials, Kai Qian
Dissertations
The study of topological mechanical metamaterials is a new emerging field that focuses on the topological properties of artificial mechanical structures. Inspired by topological insulators, topological mechanism has attracted intensive attention in condensed matter physics and successfully connected the quantum mechanical descriptions of electrons with the classical descriptions of phonons. It has led to experiments of mechanical metamaterials possessing topological characteristics, such as topologically protected conducting edges or surfaces without back-scattering. This dissertation presents a new experimental approach for mechanically engineering topological metamaterials based on patterning magnetically coupled spinners in order to localize the propagation of vibrations and evaluate different …
Solid State Synthesis Of Polar Magnetic Oxides, Duy Pham
Solid State Synthesis Of Polar Magnetic Oxides, Duy Pham
Symposium of Student Scholars
Non-centrosymmetric polar oxides are subjects of considerable interest due to varieties of important phenomena and associated functional properties. Magnetoelectric multiferroic oxides are one such system where the magnetic properties can be controlled by electric field or the electric properties can be controlled by the magnetic field. This cross tunability magnetic and electrical properties makes multiferroic materials ideal candidates for making actuators, field sensors and memory devices. Simultaneous presence of broken inversion symmetry (electric polarization) and magnetism are two key requirements for multiferroicity. Non-centrosymmetric polar magnetic oxides simultaneously offer both (polarization and magnetization) properties. Therefore, we are working toward synthesis and …
Development Of A Diamond Defect Quantum Sensing Platform For Probing Novel Quantum Magnetic Phases, Jeffrey Ahlers
Development Of A Diamond Defect Quantum Sensing Platform For Probing Novel Quantum Magnetic Phases, Jeffrey Ahlers
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond are highly effective quantum sensors due to their high spatial resolution and high magnetic field sensitivity. We present the construction of an optically detected magnetic resonance platform in order to facilitate the probing of magnetic phases in two-dimensional heterostructures. This includes the characterization of the required microwave voltage controlled oscillator and amplifier. In the presence of crystal strain, we measure ensemble nitrogen vacancy spin transitions with and without an applied magnetic field, and observe frequency shifts consistent with sample heating.

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
Heusler compounds and alloys based on them are of great recent interest because they exhibit a wide variety of spin structures, magnetic properties, and electron-transport phenomena. Their properties are tunable by alloying and we have investigated L21-ordered compound Ru2MnSn and its alloys by varying the atomic Mn:Sn composition. While antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 361 K was observed in Ru2MnSn, the Mn-poor Ru2Mn0.8Sn1.2 alloy exhibits properties of a diluted antiferromagnet in which there are localized regions of uncompensated Mn spins. Furthermore, a noncoplanar spin structure, evident from …

Influence Of Mechanical Deformation On The Photo-Voltaic Properties Of Thin Polycrystalline Cdte, Cdse, Cds Films Manufactured By Portional Evaporation In Vacuum, T I. Rakhmonov, R U. Siddikov, A Mirzaaxmedov
Scientific-technical journal
Some issues of improving the technology of obtaining thin-film (d»1.0 μm) elements with anomalous photovoltaic properties from cadmium chalcogenides by thermal evaporation in vacuum in separate portions on transparent dielectric substrates are considered. The experimental results of studying the current-voltage, lux-ampere, lux-voltage and deformation characteristics of CdTe, CdSe, CdS polycrystalline films are analyzed. It is shown that the obtained samples have linear I - V, L - A, temperature (T≈120-320 K) and deformation characteristics (ε≈-3‧10-5-3‧10-3 arb. units). Therefore, they can serve as promising photocells for the producing of film photodetectors sensitive to mechanical deformation in the visible …

Spirals And Skyrmions In Antiferromagnetic Triangular Lattices, Wuzhang Fang, Aldo Raeliarijaona, Po-Hao Chang, Alexey Kovalev, Kirill Belashchenko
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We study realizations of spirals and skyrmions in two-dimensional antiferromagnets with a triangular lattice on an inversion-symmetry-breaking substrate. As a possible material realization, we investigate the adsorption of transition-metal atoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, or Co) on a monolayer of MoS2, WS2, or WSe2 and obtain the exchange, anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction parameters using first-principles calculations. Using energy minimization and parallel-tempering Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the magnetic phase diagrams for a wide range of interaction parameters. We find that skyrmion lattices can appear even with weak Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, but their stability is hindered by magnetic anisotropy. However, a weak easy …
Multi-Scale Computational Modeling Of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces, Abu Shama Mohammad Miraz
Multi-Scale Computational Modeling Of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces, Abu Shama Mohammad Miraz
Master's Theses
Multi-scale atomistic calculations were carried out to understand the interfacial features that dictate the mechanical integrity of the metal/ceramic nanolaminates. As such, first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the electronic and atomistic factors governing adhesion and resistance to shear for simple metal/ceramic interfaces, whereas molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to observe the impact of interfacial structures, such as misfit dislocation network geometries and orientation relationships, on interfacial mechanical properties.
For the DFT investigation, we choose metals with different crystal structures, namely - Cu (fcc), Cr (bcc) and Ti (hcp) along with a variety of …
Data-Driven Approaches To Complex Materials: Applications To Amorphous Solids, Dil Kumar Limbu
Data-Driven Approaches To Complex Materials: Applications To Amorphous Solids, Dil Kumar Limbu
Dissertations
While conventional approaches to materials modeling made significant contributions and advanced our understanding of materials properties in the past decades, these approaches often cannot be applied to disordered materials (e.g., glasses) for which accurate total-energy functionals or forces are either not available or it is infeasible to employ due to computational complexities associated with modeling disordered solids in the absence of translational symmetry. In this dissertation, a number of information-driven probabilistic methods were developed for the structural determination of a range of materials including disordered solids to transition metal clusters. The ground-state structures of transition-metal clusters of iron, nickel, and …

Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy In Antiferromagnetic Mgo-Capped Mnpt Films, P. H. Chang, Wuzhang Fang, T. Ozaki, Kirill Belashchenko
Kirill Belashchenko Publications
The magnetic anisotropy in MgO-capped MnPt films and its voltage control are studied using first-principles calculations. Sharp variation of the magnetic anisotropy with film thickness, especially in the Pt-terminated film, suggests that it may be widely tuned by adjusting the film thickness. In thick films the linear voltage control coefficient is as large as 1.5 and -0.6 pJ/Vm for Pt-terminated and Mn-terminated interfaces, respectively. The combination of a widely tunable magnetic anisotropy energy and a large voltage-control coefficient suggest that MgO-capped MnPt films can serve as a versatile platform for magnetic memory and antiferromagnonic applications.

As part of a large program conducted between years 2010 and 2018, a number of ion beam surface treatments and proprietary coatings formed on advanced space polymers by direct ion beam deposition were developed at Integrity Testing Laboratory (ITL) Inc, in Canada. Thistechnology allowed producing surfaces with controlled surface resistivity in a wide range of charge dissipation values, with negligibly low additional RF losses and other important functional properties, that allowed using such treated materials and products in modern space antennae, solar arrays and other external applications on spacecrafts in GEO environment. This paper will present an overview of results …

Topological Properties In Selected Transition-Metal Pnictides And Chalcogenides, Ramakanta Chapai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With the continued discovery of topological properties in condensed matter, several members of transition-metal pnictides and chalcogenides (TMPCs) compounds have been testbeds for various exotic particles such as Dirac, Weyl and Majorana fermions. In this dissertation, we have chosen four material systems: PdSb2, PdTe2, PtTe2, and PdTe in the TMPC family, and explored their physical properties under a variety of stimuli (e.g. temperature, magnetic field, and pressure). We examined the topological behavior of these selected systems by analyzing the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations observed in the magnetization and magnetic torque.
From our magneto-transport …
Majorana Quasiparticles In Topological Material Interfaces, David Alspaugh
Majorana Quasiparticles In Topological Material Interfaces, David Alspaugh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation we analyze how Majorana quasiparticles found on material interfaces of both topological insulators (TIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) are affected by imperfections within their local environment. While these quasiparticles are predicted to be critical for the construction of quantum computers, they are typically modeled only under pristine conditions. Thus, although quantum computers may require the spatial manipulation of Majorana quasiparticles, these topological material interfaces are commonly studied in static contexts and their response to manipulation remains an open question. We first demonstrate that interface potentials on the topological insulator Bi2Se3 can enable the emergence …

Nonvolatile, molecular multiferroic devices have now been demonstrated, but it is worth giving some consideration to the issue of whether such devices could be a competitive alternative for solid-state nonvolatile memory. For the Fe (II) spin crossover complex [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)], where pz = tris(pyrazol-1-yl)-borohydride and bipy = 2,20-bipyridine, voltage-controlled isothermal changes in the electronic structure and spin state have been demonstrated and are accompanied by changes in conductance. Higher conductance is seen with [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] in the high spin state, while lower conductance occurs for the low spin state. Plausibly, …

We determine the dielectric function of the emerging ultrawide bandgap semiconductor ZnGa2O4 from the near-infrared (0.75 eV) into the vacuum ultraviolet (8.5 eV) spectral regions using spectroscopic ellipsometry on high quality single crystal substrates. We perform density functional theory calculations and discuss the band structure and the Brillouin zone Γ-point band-to-band transition energies, their transition matrix elements, and effective band mass parameters. We find an isotropic effective mass parameter (0.24me) at the bottom of the Γ-point conduction band, which equals the lowest valence band effective mass parameter at the top of the highly anisotropic …

The propulsion of living microorganisms ultimately relies on viscous drag for body-fluid interactions. The self-locomotion in superfluids such as 4He is deemed impossible due to the apparent lack of viscous resistance. Here, we investigate the self-propulsion of a Janus (two-face) light-absorbing particle suspended in superfluid helium 4He (He-II). The particle is energized by the heat flux due to the absorption of light from an external source. We show that a quantum mechanical propulsion force originates due to the transformation of the superfluid to a normal fluid on the heated particle face. The theoretical analysis is supported by the …

Mesoscopic conductance fluctuations are a ubiquitous signature of phase-coherent transport in small conductors, exhibiting universal character independent of system details. In this Letter, however, we demonstrate a pronounced breakdown of this universality, due to the interplay of local and remote phenomena in transport. Our experiments are performed in a graphene-based interaction-detection geometry, in which an artificial magnetic texture is induced in the graphene layer by covering a portion of it with a micromagnet. When probing conduction at some distance from this region, the strong influence of remote factors is manifested through the appearance of giant conductance fluctuations, with amplitude much …

Triplet 23S State Of A Quantum Dot In A Magnetic Field: A 'Quantal Newtonian' First Law Study, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
The triplet 23S state of a 2-electron 2-dimensional quantum dot in a magnetic field is studied via a complementary perspective of Schrödinger-Pauli theory. The perspective is that of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ first law. According to the law, each electron experiences an external and internal field, the sum of which vanishes. The external field is the sum of the binding and Lorentz fields. The internal field is a sum of the electron-interaction, kinetic, differential density, and internal magnetic fields. The energy is expressed in integral virial form in terms of these …

Spin Superfluidity In Noncollinear Antiferromagnets, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We explore the spin superfluid transport in exchange interaction dominated three-sublattice antiferromagnets. The system in the long-wavelength regime is described by an $SO(3)$ invariant field theory. Additional corrections from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions or anisotropies can break the symmetry; however, the system still approximately holds a $U(1)$-rotation symmetry. Thus, the power-law spatial decay signature of spin superfluidity is identified in a nonlocal-measurement setup where the spin injection is described by the generalized spin-mixing conductance. We suggest iron jarosites as promising material candidates for realizing our proposal.

Investigation Of The Interfacial Energy Level Within Organic Semiconducting Devices, Wong Wah Seng
Student Works (2020-2029)
This main goal of this research is investigating the interfacial energy level of organic semiconducting devices by correlated to the devices performance as well as physical/chemical change in the blended/mixed organic semiconductor system. The first project reported the high efficiency extra warm white organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) by blending tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine (TcTa) to poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK). The hole current for PVK:TcTa (60:40) increased by one order of magnitude in hole only device, but the current efficiency of WOLEDs improved only by 7% compared to pristine PVK. Using Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), it was discovered the hole injection barrier between poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene …

The assembly and jamming of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) at liquid–liquid interfaces is a versatile platform to endow structured liquid droplets with a magnetization, i.e., producing ferromagnetic liquid droplets (FMLDs). Here, we use hydrodynamics experiments to probe how the magnetization of FMLDs and their response to external stimuli can be tuned by chemical, structural, and magnetic means. The remanent magnetization stems from magnetic NPs jammed at the liquid–liquid interface and dispersed NPs magneto-statically coupled to the interface. FMLDs form even at low concentrations of magnetic NPs when mixing nonmagnetic and magnetic NPs, since the underlying magnetic dipole-driven clustering of magnetic NP-surfactants …

Topological solitary fields, such as magnetic and polar skyrmions, are envisioned to revolutionize microelectronics. These configurations have been stabilized in solid-state materials with a global inversion symmetry breaking, which translates in magnetic materials into a vector spin exchange known as the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI), as well as spin chirality selection and isotropic solitons. This work reports experimental evidence of 3D chiral spin textures, such as helical spins and skyrmions with different chirality and topological charge, stabilized in amorphous Fe–Ge thick films. These results demonstrate that structurally and chemically disordered materials with a random DMI can resemble inversion symmetry broken systems …

The emerging field of plasmonics can lead to enhanced light-matter interactions at extremely nanoscale regions. Plasmonic (metallic) devices promise to efficiently control both classical and quantum properties of light. Plasmonic waveguides are usually used to excite confined electromagnetic modes at the nanoscale that can strongly interact with matter. The analysis of these nanowaveguides exhibits similarities with their low frequency microwave counterparts. In this article, we review ways to study plasmonic nanostructures coupled to quantum optical emitters from a classical electromagnetic perspective. These quantum emitters are mainly used to generate single-photon quantum light that can be employed as a quantum bit …
