Universal Disorder In Organic Semiconductors Due To Fluctuations In Space Charge, Tzucheng Wu May 2017

Universal Disorder In Organic Semiconductors Due To Fluctuations In Space Charge, Tzucheng Wu

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis concerns the study of charge transport in organic semiconductors. These materials are widely used as thin-film photoconductors in copiers and laser printers, and for their electroluminescent properties in organic light-emitting diodes. Much contemporary research is directed towards improving the efficiency of organic photovoltaic devices, which is limited to a large extent by the spatial and energetic disorder that hinders the charge mobility. One contribution to energetic disorder arises from the strong Coulomb interactions between injected charges with one another, but to date this has been largely ignored. We present a mean-field model for the effect of mutual interactions …

Intervalley Scattering Rates In Tellurium Observed Via Time-Resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy, Joshua R. Rollag May 2017

Intervalley Scattering Rates In Tellurium Observed Via Time-Resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy, Joshua R. Rollag

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

We conducted time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy measurements on the elemental semiconductor tellurium. Pump-probe measurements were used to find the conductivity as a function of time in single crystalline tellurium samples. It was found that the excitation dynamics in tellurium changes for photon energies of 1.03 eV and 1.55 eV. The change in these excitation dynamics was attributed to intervalley scattering effects. A model using intervalley scattering and Auger recombination was fit to the data, giving a value of 2.28 ps for the intervalley scattering time constant in tellurium.

Hemispherical Grid Retarding Field Analyzer Redesign For Secondary Electron Emission Studies, Greg Wilson, Jr Dennison May 2017

Hemispherical Grid Retarding Field Analyzer Redesign For Secondary Electron Emission Studies, Greg Wilson, Jr Dennison

Presentations

A redesign of the Hemispherical Grid Retarding Field Analyzer is discussed in relationship to multilayer charging models. In order to accurately extend single layer charging models to dynamic multilayer scenarios, precise measurements of electron emission as well as the net surface potential must be made. By learning from the previous design and thinking of future applications, the new instrument will greatly enhance our ability to precisely measure materials undergoing energetic electron bombardment.

Presentations

A versatile test facility has been designed and built to study space environments effects on small satellites and system components. Testing for potentially environmental-induced modifications of small satellites is critical to avoid possible deleterious or catastrophic effects over the duration of space mission. This is increasingly more important as small satellite programs have longer mission lifetimes, expand to more harsh environments (such as polar or geosynchronous orbits), make more diverse and sensitive measurements, minimize shielding to reduce mass, and utilize more compact and sensitive electronics (often including untested off-the-shelf components). The vacuum chamber described here is particularly well suited for …

New Easy-Plane CpN−1 Fixed Points, Jonathan D'Emidio, Ribhu K. Kaul May 2017

New Easy-Plane CpN−1 Fixed Points, Jonathan D'Emidio, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We study fixed points of the easy-plane CPN−1 field theory by combining quantum Monte Carlo simulations of lattice models of easy-plane SU(N) superfluids with field theoretic renormalization group calculations, by using ideas of deconfined criticality. From our simulations, we present evidence that at small N our lattice model has a first-order phase transition which progressively weakens as N increases, eventually becoming continuous for large values of N. Renormalization group calculations in 4−ε dimensions provide an explanation of these results as arising due to the existence of an Nep that separates the fate of …

Kinetic Theory Of Dark Solitons With Tunable Friction, Hilary M. Hurst, Dimitry K. Efimkin, I. B. Spielman, Victor Galitski May 2017

Kinetic Theory Of Dark Solitons With Tunable Friction, Hilary M. Hurst, Dimitry K. Efimkin, I. B. Spielman, Victor Galitski

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We study controllable friction in a system consisting of a dark soliton in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a non-interacting Fermi gas. The fermions act as impurity atoms, not part of the original condensate, that scatter off of the soliton. We study semi-classical dynamics of the dark soliton, a particle-like object with negative mass, and calculate its friction coefficient. Surprisingly, it depends periodically on the ratio of interspecies (impurity-condensate) to intraspecies (condensate-condensate) interaction strengths. By tuning this ratio, one can access a regime where the friction coefficient vanishes. We develop a general theory of stochastic dynamics for negative mass …

Uv Degradation Of Polycarbonate, Katie Gamaunt May 2017

Uv Degradation Of Polycarbonate, Katie Gamaunt

Senior Theses and Projects

The decrease in visible and ultraviolet transmission spectra of polymeric and glass spacecraft materials has been measured to determine the extent of degradation due to high-energy UV radiation similar to the solar spectrum (both above and below the stratosphere, which is where most of the UV radiation is absorbed). This project looked at the effects that the atmosphere has in regards to blocking UV radiation and thus, slowing down the UV degradation process. A polycarbonate sample was exposed to radiation from a focused high intensity deuterium lamp source, which generates radiation in the UVA and UVB spectrum. A particularly severe …

Microcontroller And Memory Card Survivability In Space Conditions, Windy Olsen

Senior Theses and Projects

The Utah State University (USU) Materials Physics Group (MPG) is interested in the performance of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) microcontrollers in space conditions. Microcontrollers are commonly used on CubeSats, small relatively inexpensive satellites that are flown in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at altitudes of ~160 km-2000 km. There is a large area of interest in COTS microcontrollers because they provide a more cost-effective on-board computer for CubeSats. This experiment focused on the functionality of an ATmega328 microcontroller on an Arduino Uno board inside the MPG’s Space Survivability Test (SST) Chamber. A diagnostic program was used to try to detect …

Synthesis And Fundamental Property Studies Of Energy Material Under High Pressure., Meysam Akhtar May 2017

Synthesis And Fundamental Property Studies Of Energy Material Under High Pressure., Meysam Akhtar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, high-pressure science and technology has flourished and rapidly advanced to impact a wide domain of materials and physical sciences. One of the most substantial technological developments is the integration of samples at ultrahigh pressure with a wide range of in-situ probing techniques. Applications of extreme pressure have significantly enriched our understanding of the electronic, phonon, and doping effects on the newly emerged two-dimensional (2D) materials. Under high pressure, materials’ atomic volume radically decreases, and electronic density rises, which will lead to extraordinary chemical reaction kinetic and mechanisms. The promising capability of high pressure combine with the significance of novel …

Dynamic Secondary Electron Emission In Dielectric/Conductor Mixed, Leandro Olano, Isabel Montero, María E. Dávila, A. Jacas, M. A. Rodriguez, Jr Dennison

Conference Proceedings

Secondary Emission Yield (SEY) of dielectric materials is of great importance for prediction and testing of the Multipaction discharge in RF components for space applications. An atypical behavior of the SEY of coatings composed by a mixture of conductor and dielectric microparticles was reported and modeled in [1]; in this original model, the interactions between dielectric and conductor particles were not taken into account, but an effective action of the surface voltage generated within the sample was included. The aim of the present contribution is to more accurately model the effect the electric fields between dielectric and conductor particles have …

Dynamic Secondary Electron Emission In Dielectric/Conductor Mixed Coatings, Leandro Olano, Isabel Montero, María E. Dávila, Jr Dennison

Presentations

An unexpected behavior of the Secondary Emission Yield (SEY) on coatings composed by a mixture of conductor and dielectric microparticles was reported and modeled in [1]. As a follow up, we measured for a fixed primary energy the dynamic evolution of the SEY in similar samples and proposed a charging-roughness coupled model to simulate the experimental results. Two different coatings were selected: 1) TMM and Al microparticles (type 1), and 2) zeolites and gold nanoparticles (type 2). Pulsed and continuous tests were used to obtain the SEY as a function of the primary energy.

In both types of samples extremely …

Pumping Of Magnons In A Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Ferromagnet, Alexey Kovalev, Vladimir Zyuzin, Bo Li Apr 2017

Pumping Of Magnons In A Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Ferromagnet, Alexey Kovalev, Vladimir Zyuzin, Bo Li

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We formulate a microscopic linear response theory of magnon pumping applicable to multiple-magnonic-band uniform ferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. From the linear response theory, we identify the extrinsic and intrinsic contributions where the latter is expressed via the Berry curvature of magnonic bands. We observe that in the presence of a time-dependent magnetization Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions can act as fictitious electric fields acting on magnons. We study various current responses to this fictitious field and analyze the role of Berry curvature. In particular, we obtain an analog of the Hall-like response in systems with nontrivial Berry curvature of magnon bands. After identifying …

Room-Temperature Self-Powered Energy Photodetector Based On Optically Induced Seebeck Effect In Cd3As2, Niloufar Yavarishad, Tahereh Hosseini, Elaheh Kheirandish, Christopher P. Weber, Nikolai Kouklin Apr 2017

Room-Temperature Self-Powered Energy Photodetector Based On Optically Induced Seebeck Effect In Cd3As2, Niloufar Yavarishad, Tahereh Hosseini, Elaheh Kheirandish, Christopher P. Weber, Nikolai Kouklin

Physics

We demonstrate an intrinsically fast Seebeck-type metal–semimetal–metal infrared photodetector based on Cd3As2 crystals. The Seebeck voltage is induced under off-center illumination, leading to asymmetric temperature gradients and a net current flow. The room-temperature responsivity of the sensor is 0.27 mA/W. The photocurrent signal is readily registered at a modulation frequency of 6 kHz, and the intrinsic bandwidth of the sensor is predicted to approach the terahertz range. The photocurrent depends on the optical power and modulation frequency. Our study demonstrates that crystallineCd3As2 is a promising material for high-bandwidth and spectrally broad photosensing, imaging, and …

Nonlinear Dynamics Of Vortices In Different Types Of Grain Boundaries, Ahmad K. Sheikhzada Apr 2017

Nonlinear Dynamics Of Vortices In Different Types Of Grain Boundaries, Ahmad K. Sheikhzada

Physics Theses & Dissertations

As a major component of linear particle accelerators, superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) resonator cavities are required to operate with lowest energy dissipation and highest accelerating gradient. SRF cavities are made of polycrystalline materials in which grain boundaries can limit maximum RF currents and produce additional power dissipation sources due to local penetration of Josephson vortices. The essential physics of vortex penetration and mechanisms of dissipation of vortices driven by strong RF currents along networks of grain boundaries and their contribution to the residual surface resistance have not been well understood. To evaluate how GBs can limit the performance of SRF materials, …

Tuning The Effective Anisotropy In A Voltage-Susceptible Exchange-Bias Heterosystem, Will Echtenkamp, Mike Street, Ather Mahmood, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

Voltage- and temperature-tuned ferromagnetic hysteresis is investigated by a superconducting quantum-interference device and Kerr magnetometry in a thin-film heterostructure of a perpendicular anisotropic Co/Pd ferromagnet exchange coupled to the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Cr2O3. An abrupt disappearance of exchange bias with a simultaneous more than twofold increase in coercivity is observed and interpreted as a competition between the effective anisotropy of Cr2O3 and the exchange-coupling energy between boundary magnetization and the adjacent ferromagnet. The effective anisotropy energy is given by the intrinsic anisotropy energy density multiplied by the effective volume separated from the bulk through …

Model For Charge Injection With Electron Beams Into Highly Disordered Insulating Materials, Jr Dennison Mar 2017

Model For Charge Injection With Electron Beams Into Highly Disordered Insulating Materials, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The Walden-Wintle model for charge injection and transport through highly disordered insulating materials has been extended to include charge injection with a charged particle beam. The original model is applicable to charge injection into a dielectric material from a pair of electrodes in a parallel-plate geometry. It provides a versatile approach to predict the time-dependent current at a rear grounded electrode and the incident surface voltage, as the injection current density evolves over time with the development of a space charge barrier near the injection electrode. The Walden-Wintle model has been applied to many standard cases including Fowler-Nordheim injection, Schottky …

A New Physical Model For Dc Partial Discharge In Polymeric Insulators, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Mar 2017

A New Physical Model For Dc Partial Discharge In Polymeric Insulators, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The physics of DC partial discharge (DCPD) continues to pose a challenge to researchers. We present a new physically-motivated model of DCPD in amorphous polymers based on our dual-defect model of dielectric breakdown. The dual-defect model is an extension of standard static mean field theories, such as the Crine model, that describe avalanche breakdown of charge carriers trapped on uniformly distributed defect sites. It assumes the presence of both high-energy chemical defects and low-energy thermally-recoverable physical defects. We present our measurements of breakdown and DCPD for several common polymeric materials in the context of this model. Improved understanding of DCPD …

Effect Of Disorder On The Resistivity Of Cofecral Films, Y. Jin, R. Skomski, P. Kharel, S.R. Valloppilly, D. J. Sellmyer Mar 2017

Effect Of Disorder On The Resistivity Of Cofecral Films, Y. Jin, R. Skomski, P. Kharel, S.R. Valloppilly, D. J. Sellmyer

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Structural and electron-transport properties of thin films of the ferrimagnetic Heusler compound CoFeCrAl have been investigated to elucidate structure-property relationships. The alloy is, ideally, a spin-gapless semiconductor, but structural disorder destroys the spin-gapless character and drastically alters the transport behavior. Two types of CoFeCrAl films were grown by magnetron sputtering deposition at 973 K, namely polycrystalline films on Si substrates and epitaxial films on MgO (001) substrates. The resistivity decreases with increasing temperature, with relatively small temperature coefficients of –0.19 cm=K for the polycrystalline films and –0.12 cm=K for the epitaxial films. The residual resistivity of the polycrystalline films deposited …

Faculty Journal Articles

Slowly strained solids deform via intermittent slips that exhibit a material-independent critical size distribution. Here, by comparing two disparate systems - granular materials and bulk metallic glasses - we show evidence that not only the statistics of slips but also their dynamics are remarkably similar, i.e. independent of the microscopic details of the material. By resolving and comparing the full time evolution of avalanches in bulk metallic glasses and granular materials, we uncover a regime of universal deformation dynamics. We experimentally verify the predicted universal scaling functions for the dynamics of individual avalanches in both systems, and show that both …

Designing Novel Nanostructured Permanent Magnets, Ali Al Kadhim

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Rare earth element based alloys have been the source of high performance magnetic alloys, and have played a paramount role in the development of various technologies, including: memory devices (such as credit cards, random-access memory), sensors, and various biomedical applications. However, there is a tremendous need to replace rare earth metals with material with powerful magnetic properties. Our group recently found CrTe-based materials that show very promising magnetic properties in nanostructured form. The magnetic modeling of such material in nanostructured form prior to their fabrication demonstrates their magnetic properties in bulk form. In this project, we investigate the behavior of …

Temperature Dependency Of Electrostatic Breakdown In Ldpe And Peek, Tyler Kippen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Feb 2017

Temperature Dependency Of Electrostatic Breakdown In Ldpe And Peek, Tyler Kippen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Electrostatic breakdown is a leading cause of many of the anomalies and failures attributed to spacecraft interactions with the space environment. It is therefore critical to understand how the electrostatic field strength varies due to changing environmental conditions, including temperature and radiation dose. Standard step-up to electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests were performed on two polymers, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Tests were done at room temperature and at other temperatures ranging from ~130 K to ~350 K. Preliminary analysis found that samples tested at a higher temperature had lower average breakdown field strength and a narrower distribution of …
