Ab-Initio And Model Studies Of Spin Fluctuation Effects In Transport And Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Metals, James K. Glasbrenner Mar 2013

Ab-Initio And Model Studies Of Spin Fluctuation Effects In Transport And Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Metals, James K. Glasbrenner

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Magnetic materials are vital to many devices and the manipulation of spins is central to the operation of novel devices such as spin transistors. It is important to understand the effect of spin fluctuations on such systems. In this dissertation, first-principles calculations and models further the understanding of spin fluctuation effects in the transport and thermodynamics of magnetic metals.

A simple classical spin-fluctuation Hamiltonian with a single itinerancy parameter is studied using the mean-field approximation, Monte Carlo simulations, and a generalized Onsager cavity field method. The results of these different methods are in agreement. It is found that the thermodynamics …

Hydroxyl-Decorated Graphene Systems As Candidates For Organic Metal-Free Ferroelectrics, Multiferroics, And High-Performance Proton Battery Cathode Materials, Menghao Wu, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Purusottam Jena Feb 2013

Hydroxyl-Decorated Graphene Systems As Candidates For Organic Metal-Free Ferroelectrics, Multiferroics, And High-Performance Proton Battery Cathode Materials, Menghao Wu, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Purusottam Jena

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Using a first-principles method we show that graphene based materials, functionalized with hydroxyl groups, constitute a class of multifunctional, lightweight, and nontoxic organic materials with functional properties such as ferroelectricity, multiferroicity, and can be used as proton battery cathode materials. For example, the polarizations of semihydroxylized graphane and graphone, as well as fully hydroxylized graphane, are much higher than any organic ferroelectric materials known to date. Further, hydroxylized graphene nanoribbons with proton vacancies at the end can have much larger dipole moments. They may also be applied as high-capacity cathode materials with a specific capacity that is six times larger …

Faraday Cup Designs For High Efficiency Determination Of Energy- And Angular-Resolved Charged Particle Fluxes, Kent D. Hartley

Senior Theses and Projects

Faraday cups provide a simple and efficient apparatus to measure the absolute magnitude of charge particle fluxes, and with the addition of a retarding field analyzer and defining apertures the capability to determine the energy and angular distributions of the fluxes. Through careful design of the electron optics, a Faraday cup can be tailored to meet specific requirements for detector size, minimum detectable flux, collection efficiency, absolute accuracy, energy discrimination, and angular resolution. This project explores optimal design concepts through electric field and charged particle trajectory simulations, theoretical analysis, and evaluation of experimental prototypes to develop compact, high efficiency Faraday …

Strain-Mediated Elastic Coupling In Magnetoelectric Nickel/Barium-Titanate Heterostructures, Robert Streubel, Denny Köhler, Rudolf Schäfer, Lukas M. Eng Feb 2013

Strain-Mediated Elastic Coupling In Magnetoelectric Nickel/Barium-Titanate Heterostructures, Robert Streubel, Denny Köhler, Rudolf Schäfer, Lukas M. Eng

Robert Streubel Papers

Multiferroic nanomaterials bear the potential for assembling a manifold of novel and smart devices. For room temperature (RT) applications, however, only the BiFeO3 single-phase perovskites are potential candidates to date. Nevertheless, vertical heterostructures separating magnetic and ferroelectric functionality into different layers are now widely proposed to circumvent this lack in materials' availability. We show here that the second approach is very profitable as illustrated by the strain-mediated coupling between such two layers, i.e., a ferroelectric barium titanate single-crystal (BTO) and a magnetostrictive nickel (Ni) thin film. Applying an electric field across the BTO substrate forces the magnetic easy axis in …

Diffusion Of Degenerate Minority Carrier In A P-Type Semiconductor, Christopher P. Weber, Eric A. Kittlaus Feb 2013

Diffusion Of Degenerate Minority Carrier In A P-Type Semiconductor, Christopher P. Weber, Eric A. Kittlaus

Physics

We report ultrafast transient-grating experiments on heavily p-type InP at 15 K. Our measurement reveals the dynamics and diffusion of photoexcited electrons and holes as a function of their density n in the range 2  ×  1016 to 6  ×  1017 cm−3. After the first few picoseconds, the grating decays primarily due to ambipolar diffusion. While, at low density, we observe a regime in which the ambipolar diffusion is electron-dominated and increases rapidly with n, it appears to saturate at 34 cm2/s at high n. We present a simple calculation that reproduces the main …

Low Energy Positron Interactions With Biological Molecules, Indika Lasantha Wanniarachchi Jan 2013

Low Energy Positron Interactions With Biological Molecules, Indika Lasantha Wanniarachchi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Calculations of the positron density distribution which can be used for positrons bound to midsize and larger molecules have been tested for smaller molecules and subsequently applied to investigate the most likely e+e- annihilation sites for positrons interacting with biological molecules containing C, H, O, and N. In order to allow consideration of positrons bound to extended molecules with regions of different character and no particular symmetry, atom-centered positron basis sets of Gaussian-type functions were developed for positrons bound to molecules containing O, N, C, H, Li, Na, and Be. Testing shows that there is no need to scale the …

Adherent Cells Avoid Polarization Gradients On Periodically Poled Litao3 Ferroelectrics, Christof Christophis, Elisabetta Ada Cavalcanti-Adam, Maximilian Hanke, Kenji Kitamura, Alexei Gruverman, Michael Grunze, Peter A. Dowben, Axel Rosenhahn Jan 2013

Adherent Cells Avoid Polarization Gradients On Periodically Poled Litao3 Ferroelectrics, Christof Christophis, Elisabetta Ada Cavalcanti-Adam, Maximilian Hanke, Kenji Kitamura, Alexei Gruverman, Michael Grunze, Peter A. Dowben, Axel Rosenhahn

Peter Dowben Publications

The response of fibroblast cells to periodically poled LiTaO3 ferroelectric crystals has been studied. While fibroblast cells do not show morphological differences on the two polarization directions, they show a tendency to avoid the field gradients that occur between polarization domains of the ferroelectric. The response to the field gradients is fully established after one hour, a time at which fibroblasts form their first focal contacts. If suspension cells, with a lower tendency to establish strong surface contacts are used, no influence of the field gradients is observed.

Proton Transfer In Surface-Stabilized Chiral Motifs Of Croconic Acid, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Geoffrey Rojas, Stephen Ducharme, Timothy Usher, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders Jan 2013

Proton Transfer In Surface-Stabilized Chiral Motifs Of Croconic Acid, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Geoffrey Rojas, Stephen Ducharme, Timothy Usher, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The structure and cooperative proton ordering of two-dimensional sheets of croconic acid were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations. Unlike in the crystalline form, which exhibits a pleated, densely packed polar sheet structure, the confinement of the molecules to the surface results in hydrogenbonded chiral clusters and networks. First-principles calculations suggest that the surface stabilizes networks of configurational isomers, which arise from direct hydrogen transfer between their constituent croconic acid monomers. Some of these configurations have a net polarization. It is demonstrated through constrained molecular dynamics simulations that simultaneous proton transfer between any two molecules can occur spontaneously. …

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature (7–300 K and 5–300 K respectively) have been measured on single crystals of the multiferroic compound FeTe2O5Br utilizing light spanning from the far infrared to the visible. The complex dielectric function and other optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. Analysis of the anisotropic excitation spectra via Drude-Lorentz fitting and lattice dynamical calculations have led to the observation of 43 of the 53 modes predicted along the b axis of the monoclinic cell. The phonon response parallel to the a and …

Growth Diagram Of La0.7sr0.3mno3 Thin Films Using Pulsed Laser Deposition, Hangwen Guo, Dali Sun, Wenbin Wang, Zheng Gai, Ivan Kravchenko, Jian Shao, Lu Jiang, Thomas Z. Ward, Paul C. Snijders, Lifeng Yin, Jian Shao, Xiaoshan Xu

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

An experimental study was conducted on controlling the growth mode of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films on SrTiO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) by tuning growth temperature, pressure, and laser fluence. Different thin film morphology, crystallinity, and stoichiometry have been observed depending on growth parameters. To understand the microscopic origin, the adatom nucleation, step advance processes, and their relationship to film growth were theoretically analyzed and a growth diagram was constructed. Three boundaries between highly and poorly crystallized growth, 2D and 3D growth, stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric growth were identified in the growth diagram. A good …

Room-Temperature Multiferroic Hexagonal Lufeo3 Films, Wenbin Wang, Jun Zhao, Wenbo Wang, Zheng Gai, Nina Balke, Miaofang Chi, Ho Nyung Lee, Wei Tian, Leyi Zhu, Xuemei Cheng, David J. Keavney, Jieyu Yi, Thomas Z. Ward, Paul C. Snijders, Hans M. Christen, Weida Wu, Jian Shen, Xiaoshan Xu

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

The crystal and magnetic structures of single-crystalline hexagonal LuFeO3 films have been studied using x-ray, electron, and neutron diffraction methods. The polar structure of these films are found to persist up to 1050 K; and the switchability of the polar behavior is observed at room temperature, indicating ferroelectricity. An antiferromagnetic order was shown to occur below 440 K, followed by a spin reorientation resulting in a weak ferromagnetic order below 130 K. This observation of coexisting multiple ferroic orders demonstrates that hexagonal LuFeO3 films are room-temperature multiferroics.

Stacking Principle And Magic Sizes Of Transition Metal Nanoclusters Based On Generalized Wulff Construction, S. F. Li, X. J. Zhao, X. S. Xu, Y. F. Gao, Zhenyu Zhang Jan 2013

Stacking Principle And Magic Sizes Of Transition Metal Nanoclusters Based On Generalized Wulff Construction, S. F. Li, X. J. Zhao, X. S. Xu, Y. F. Gao, Zhenyu Zhang

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Nanoclusters with extra stability at certain cluster sizes are known as magic clusters with exotic properties. The classic Wulff construction principle, which stipulates that the preferred structure of a cluster should minimize its total surface energy, is often invoked in determining the cluster magicity, resulting in close-shelled Mackay icosahedronal clusters with odd-numbered magic sizes of 13, 55, 147, etc. Here we use transition metal clusters around size 55 as prototypical examples to demonstrate that, in the nanometer regime, the classic Wulff construction principle needs to be generalized to primarily emphasize the edge atom effect instead of the surface energy. Specifically, …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Spectroscopic ellipsometry in the mid-infrared and far-infrared spectral range and generalized ellipsometry in the mid-infrared spectral range are used to investigate the anisotropic dielectric response of rutile TiO2. The ordinary and extraordinary dielectric function tensor components and all infrared active phonon mode parameters of single crystalline rutile TiO2 are determined with high accuracy for wavelengths from 3 μm to 83 μm. The data were acquired from samples of (001), (100), and (111) surfaces cut from bulk single crystals. A factorized model dielectric function is employed in order to determine the frequencies and damping parameters of the transverse …

Soft matter systems of colloidal particles, polymers, amphiphiles and liquid crystals are ubiquitous in our everyday life. Food, plastics, soap and even human body is comprised of soft materials. Research conducted to understand the behavior of these soft matter systems at molecular level is essential for many interdisciplinary fields of study as well as important for many technological applications.

We used gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) to investigate the length-scale dependent dynamics in semidilute poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-water, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-phosphate buffer, dextran and particulate solutions. In case of PEG-water solutions, fluctuation correlation spectroscopy was used to measure the diffusion coefficients …

Domain Wall Roughness And Creep In Nanoscale Crystalline Ferroelectric Polymers, Zhengguo Xiao, Shashi Poddar, Stephen Ducharme, X. Hong Jan 2013

Domain Wall Roughness And Creep In Nanoscale Crystalline Ferroelectric Polymers, Zhengguo Xiao, Shashi Poddar, Stephen Ducharme, X. Hong

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We report piezo-response force microscopy studies of the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs) in 11 to 36 nm thick films of crystalline ferroelectric poly(vinylidene-fluoride-trifluorethylene). The DW roughness exponent ζ ranges from 0.39 to 0.48 and the DW creep exponent µ varies from 0.20 to 0.28, revealing an unexpected effective dimensionality of ~1.5 that is independent of film thickness. Our results suggest predominantly 2D ferroelectricity in the layered polymer and we attribute the fractal dimensionality to DW deroughening due to the correlations between the in-plane and out-of-plane polarization, an effect that can be exploited to achieve high lateral …

Origin Of The Low Frequency Radiation Emitted By Radiative Polaritons Excited By Infrared Radiation In Planar La2o3 Films, Anita J. Vincent-Johnson, Yosep Schwab, Harkirat S. Mann, Mathieu Francoeur, James S. Hammonds Jr., Giovanna Scarel

Department of Physics and Astronomy - Faculty Scholarship

Upon excitation in thin oxide films by infrared radiation, radiative polaritons are formed with complex angular frequency ω, according to the theory of Kliewer and Fuchs (1966 Phys. Rev. 150 573). We show that radiative polaritons leak radiation with frequency ωi to the space surrounding the oxide film. The frequency ωi is the imaginary part of ω. The effects of the presence of the radiation leaked out at frequency ωi are observed experimentally and numerically in the infrared spectra of La2O3 films on silicon upon excitation by infrared radiation of the 0TH type radiative polariton. The frequency ωi is found …

Synthesis And Properties Of Polymer Nanocomposites With Tunable Electromagnetic Response, Kristen Lee Stojak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Multifunctional polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are attractive for the design of tunable RF and microwave components such as flexible electronics, attenuators, and antennas due to cost-effectiveness and durability of polymeric matrices. In this work, three separate PNCs were synthesized. Magnetite (Fe3O4) and cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles, synthesized by thermal decomposition, were used as PNC fillers. Polymers used in this work were a commercial polymer provided by the Rogers Corporation (RP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). PNCs in this thesis consist of Fe3O4 in RP, CFO in RP, and Fe3O4 in PVDF. Characterization techniques for determining morphology of the nanoparticles, and their resulting …

Magnetization Dynamics And Related Phenomena In Nanostructures, Sayan Chandra Jan 2013

Magnetization Dynamics And Related Phenomena In Nanostructures, Sayan Chandra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Collective magnetic behavior in nanostructures is a phenomenon commonly observed in various magnetic systems. It arises due to competing inter/intra–particle interactions and size distribution and can manifest in phenomena like magnetic freezing, magnetic aging, and exchange bias (EB) effect. In order to probe these rather complex phenomena, conventional DC and AC magnetic measurements have been performed along with radio–frequency transverse susceptibility (TS) measurements. We also demonstrate the magnetic entropy change as a parameter sensitive to subtle changes in the magnetization dynamics of nanostructures. The focus of this dissertation is to study the collective magnetic behavior in core-shell nanostructures of Fe/γ–Fe …

Magnetism In Complex Oxides Probed By Magnetocaloric Effect And Transverse Susceptibility, Nicholas Steven Bingham Jan 2013

Magnetism In Complex Oxides Probed By Magnetocaloric Effect And Transverse Susceptibility, Nicholas Steven Bingham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic oxides exhibit rich complexity in their fundamental physical properties determined by the intricate interplay between structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. The common themes that are often present in these systems are the phase coexistence, strong magnetostructural coupling, and possible spin frustration induced by lattice geometry. While a complete understanding of the ground state magnetic properties and cooperative phenomena in this class of compounds is key to manipulating their functionality for applications, it remains among the most challenging problems facing condensed-matter physics today. To address these outstanding issues, it is essential to employ experimental methods that allow for …

Spin Dependent Transport In Novel Magnetic Heterostructures, Priyanga Buddhika Jayathilaka Jan 2013

Spin Dependent Transport In Novel Magnetic Heterostructures, Priyanga Buddhika Jayathilaka

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic oxides have become of interest source for spin transport devices due to their high spin polarization. But the real applications of these oxides remains unsatisfactory up to date, mostly due to the change of properties as a result of nano structuring. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is one such a material. High Curie temperature and the half metallicity of Fe3O4 make it a good potential candidate for spin transport devices. Studies have shown that the nano structuring Fe3O4 changes most of it's important properties. This includes high saturation magnetization and drop of …

Investigation Of Nbnx Thin Films And Nanoparticles Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition And Thermal Diffusion, Ashraf Hassan Farha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Niobium nitride films (NbNx) were grown on Nb and Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser heating, and thermal diffusion methods. Niobium nitride films were deposited on Nb substrates using PLD with a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm, 40 ns pulse width, and 10 Hz repetition rate) at different laser fluences, different nitrogen background pressures and deposition temperatures. The effect of changing PLD parameters for films done by PLD was studied. The seen observations establish guidelines for adjusting the laser parameters to achieve the desired morphology and phase of the grown NbNx films.

When the …

Induced Magneto-Electric Coupling In Ferroelectric/Ferromagnetic Heterostructures, Jeffery Carvell, Ruihua Cheng, Peter A. Dowben, Q Yang

Peter Dowben Publications

Using an external magnetic field, we have demonstrated room temperature control of the electric polarization of a ferroelectric polymer, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), in an artificial multiferroic structure. For ferroelectric PVDF polymer thin films in an iron-PVDF-iron heterostructure, both the ferroelectric coercivity and polarization display a hysteresis dependence on the external magnetic field. We also find that the thickness of the PVDF layer has an effect on the magnetoelectric coupling in our samples. We observe a giant magnetoelectric coupling with values as large as 3700 V/cm Oe to 41700 V/cm Oe.

Ultrasound For Improved Crystallisation In Food Processing, N. Misra, Navneet Deora, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen

Articles

Within the food industry, controlling crystallisation is a key factor governing food structure, texture and consumer appeal, with some foods requiring the promotion of crystallisation in a controlled manner (e.g. chocolate) and others a check (e.g. in honey). Sonocrystallisation is the application of ultrasound energy to control the nucleation of a crystallisation process. The use of power ultrasound provides a non-invasive approach to producing crystals with desired properties. Sonocrystallisation facilitates process control, primarily by modulating crystal size distribution and morphology. This paper details the governing mechanisms of sonocrystallisation. Proven and potential applications of the process in foods, including chocolates, honey, …

Voltage Modulated Infrared Reflectance Study Of Soluble Organic Semiconductors In Thin Film Transistors, Emily Geraldine Bittle Jan 2013

Voltage Modulated Infrared Reflectance Study Of Soluble Organic Semiconductors In Thin Film Transistors, Emily Geraldine Bittle

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Soluble organic semiconductors have attracted interest due to their potential in making flexible and cheap electronics. Though their use is being implemented in electronics today, the conduction mechanism is still under investigation. In order to study the charge transport, this study examines the position, voltage, and frequency dependence of charge induced changes in far infrared absorption in soluble organic semiconductors in thin-film transistor structures. Measurements are compared to a simple model of a one-dimensional conductor which gives insight into the charge distribution and timing in devices. Main results of the study are dynamic measurements of charge taken by varying the …

Non-Equilibrium Melting And Sublimation Of Graphene Simulated With Two Interatomic Potentials, Brad Steele Jan 2013

Non-Equilibrium Melting And Sublimation Of Graphene Simulated With Two Interatomic Potentials, Brad Steele

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The mechanisms of the sublimation of graphene at zero pressure and the condensation of carbon vapor is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The interatomic interactions are described by the Reactive Empirical Bond Order potential (REBO). It is found that graphene sublimates at a temperature of 5,200 K. At the onset of sublimation, defects that contain several pentagons and heptagons are formed, that are shown to evolve from double vacancies and stone wales defects. These defects consisting of pentagons and heptagons act as nucleation sites for the gaseous phase. The influence of the interatomic interactions on the sublimation process are …

Development Of Improved Models For Gas Sorption Simulation, Keith Mclaughlin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Computational chemistry offers one the ability to develop a better understanding of the complex physical and chemical interactions that are fundamental to macro- and mesoscopic processes that are seen in laboratory experiments, industrial processes, and ordinary, everyday life. For many systems, the physics of interest occur at the molecular or atomistic levels, and in these cases, computational modeling and two well refined simulation techniques become invaluable: Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamics (MD). In this work, two well established problems were tackled. First, models and potentials for various gas molecules were produced and refined from first principles. These models, although …

Scaling Of The Coercive Field In Ferroelectrics At The Nanoscale, R. V. Gaynutdinov, M. Minnekaev, S. Mitko, A. L. Tolstikhina, A. Zenkevich, Stephen Ducharme, Vladimir M. Fridkin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The scaling of the coercive field in ferroelectric films at the nanoscale is investigated experimentally. The scaling in the films of copolymer vinylidene fluoride and BaTiO3 with thickness equal by the order of value to the critical domain nucleus size 1–10 nm reveals deviation from the well-known Kay–Dunn law. At this thickness region coercive field does not depend on thickness and coincides with Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire value.

Rhodizonic Acid On Noble Metals: Surface Reactivity And Coordination Chemistry, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Sumit Beniwal, Katie L. Morrow, Douglas C. Smith, Kimberly Cousins, Stephen Ducharme, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders Jan 2013

Rhodizonic Acid On Noble Metals: Surface Reactivity And Coordination Chemistry, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Sumit Beniwal, Katie L. Morrow, Douglas C. Smith, Kimberly Cousins, Stephen Ducharme, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders

Stephen Ducharme Publications

A study of the two-dimensional crystallization of rhodizonic acid on the crystalline surfaces of gold and copper is presented. Rhodizonic acid, a cyclic oxocarbon related to the ferroelectric croconic acid and the antiferroelectric squaric acid, has not been synthesized in bulk crystalline form yet. Capitalizing on surface-assisted molecular self-assembly, a two-dimensional analogue to the well-known solution-based coordination chemistry, two-dimensional structures of rhodizonic acid were stabilized under ultrahigh vacuum on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy, coupled with first-principles calculations, reveals that on the less reactive Au surface, extended two-dimensional islands of rhodizonic acid are formed, in which the molecules …
