The Thermoelectric Properties Investigation Of X0.05Mo3Sb7-YTeY (X=Mn, Fe, Ni, Co; Y=1.5, 1.6, 1.7), Tim Holgate

All Theses

With ever increasing energy costs, dwindling resources, and terms with the prefix 'green' filling headlines, the need for environmentally friendly energy sources has never been greater. Since the mid-20th century researchers have been pursuing greater efficiency in thermoelectric materials. Thermoelectric materials achieve energy conversion via the Seebeck effect (heat to electric power) and the Peltier effect (electricity to cooling power). Presented herein are the measured electrical and thermal transport properties and phenomenal analysis of the Ir3Ge7-type system: X0.05Mo3Sb7-yTey (X=Mn, Fe, Ni, Co; y=1.5, 1.6, 1.7) where 'X' are interstitially …

Intergranular Phases In Cyclically Annealed Yba2cu3o7-X And Their Implications For Critical Current Densities, Andrew Peter Clarke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

We report changes in the intergranular material and grain morphology of YBa2Cu3O7-x during cyclic anneals between 780 and 980 ºC in oxygen at atmospheric pressure. Two endothermic reactions were detected: (a) the eutectic reaction of YBa2Cu3O7-x with CuO and BaCuO2 at 900 ºC (enthalpy ∆Ha) and (b) the peritectic reaction of YBa2Cu3O7-x with CuO at 950 ºC (∆Hb). During the first anneal, only reaction (b) is detected, and although it should only occur if there is an excess of CuO, …

Calculations Of Diffusion In Fcc Binary Alloys Using On-The-Fly Kinetic Monte Carlo, Erdi Bleda Dec 2008

Calculations Of Diffusion In Fcc Binary Alloys Using On-The-Fly Kinetic Monte Carlo, Erdi Bleda

All Dissertations

With the recent advancements in computer technologies and the improvements in simulation algorithms, along with the theories, has allowed scientists to carry out diffusion calculations more efficiently, especially for the cases where either the diffusion itself takes longer, or there is no available isotope to carry out the diffusion experiments such as tracer diffusion.
In this work, we present a systematic approach to diffusion in intermetallic alloys such as weakly clustered Cu — Ni and weakly ordered Au — Ag. We use Accelerated Molecular Dynamics (AMD) combined with the Embedded Atom Method (EAM) to find the necessary saddlepoint energies. With …

Modeling Of Spin Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor: A Nonequilibrium Green’S Function Approach With Spin Relaxation, Tony Low, Mark Lundstrom, Dmitri Nikonov Nov 2008

Modeling Of Spin Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor: A Nonequilibrium Green’S Function Approach With Spin Relaxation, Tony Low, Mark Lundstrom, Dmitri Nikonov

Birck and NCN Publications

A spin metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (spin MOSFET), which combines a Schottky-barrier MOSFET with ferromagnetic source and drain contacts, is a promising device for spintronic logic. Previous simulation studies predict that this device should display a very high magnetoresistance (MR) ratio (between the cases of parallel and antiparallel magnetizations) for the case of half-metal ferromagnets (HMF). We use the nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism to describe tunneling and carrier transport in this device and to incorporate spin relaxation at the HMF-semiconductor interfaces. Spin relaxation at interfaces results in nonideal spin injection. Minority spin currents arise and dominate the leakage current for antiparallel …

Regulating Self-Organizing Nanostructures Via External Mechanism, Jiangyu Li, Q. G. Du, Stephen Ducharme Nov 2008

Regulating Self-Organizing Nanostructures Via External Mechanism, Jiangyu Li, Q. G. Du, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

Self-organizing nanostructures are ubiquitous in both natural and synthetic materials. They are not only appealing scientifically, by revealing the intrinsic atomic and molecular interactions that might be difficult to detect otherwise, but may also hold the key for the development of novel functional structures and devices. For their technological potential to be fully realized, the size, morphology, and distribution of the self-organizing nanostructures must be regulated. In this paper, we investigate the principles under which the self-organizing nanostructures can be regulated via external mechanisms. Using nanomesa and nanowell formation in polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene copolymer film as an example, we demonstrate …

Deep Dielectric Charging Of Spacecraft Polymers By Energetic Protons, Nelson W. Green, Jr Dennison Oct 2008

Deep Dielectric Charging Of Spacecraft Polymers By Energetic Protons, Nelson W. Green, Jr Dennison

Journal Articles

The majority of research in the field of spacecraft charging concentrates on electron charging effects with little discussion of charging by protons. For spacecraft orbiting in the traditional LEO and GEO environments, this emphasis on electrons is appropriate since energetic electrons are the dominant species. However, for spacecraft in orbits within the inner radiation belts, or for interplanetary and lunar space probes, proton charging effects may also be of concern. To examine bulk spacecraft charging effects in these environments, several typical highly insulating spacecraft polymers were exposed to energetic protons with energies from 1 to 10 MeV to simulate protons …

Low-Fluence Electron Yields Of Highly Insulating Materials, Ryan Hoffmann, Jr Dennison, Clint D. Thomson, Jennifer Albretson Oct 2008

Low-Fluence Electron Yields Of Highly Insulating Materials, Ryan Hoffmann, Jr Dennison, Clint D. Thomson, Jennifer Albretson

Journal Articles

Electron-induced electron yields of high-resistivity, high-yield materials - ceramic polycrystalline aluminum oxide and the polymer polyimide (Kapton HN), - were made by using a low-fluence, pulsed incident electron beam and charge neutralization electron source to minimize charge accumulation. Large changes in energy-dependent total yield curves and yield decay curves were observed, even for incident electron fluences of <3 fC/mm2. The evolution of the electron yield as charge accumulates in the material is modeled in terms of electron re-capture based on an extended Chung-Everhart model of the electron emission spectrum. This model is used to explain anomalies measured in highly insulating, …

Quantum Analysis Of A Nonlinear Microwave Cavity-Embedded Dc Squid Displacement Detector, P. D. Nation, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks Sep 2008

Quantum Analysis Of A Nonlinear Microwave Cavity-Embedded Dc Squid Displacement Detector, P. D. Nation, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks

Dartmouth Scholarship

We carry out a quantum analysis of a dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) mechanical displacement detector, comprising a SQUID with mechanically compliant loop segment, which is embedded in a microwave transmission line resonator. The SQUID is approximated as a nonlinear current-dependent inductance, inducing an external flux tunable nonlinear Duffing self-interaction term in the microwave resonator mode equation. Motion of the compliant SQUID loop segment is transduced inductively through changes in the external flux threading SQUID loop, giving a ponderomotive radiation pressure-type coupling between the microwave and mechanical resonator modes. Expressions are derived for the detector signal response and noise, …

Surface Magnetoelectric Effect In Ferromagnetic Metal Films, Chun-Gang Duan, Julian P. Velev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Ziqiang Zhu, Junhao Chu, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Sep 2008

Surface Magnetoelectric Effect In Ferromagnetic Metal Films, Chun-Gang Duan, Julian P. Velev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Ziqiang Zhu, Junhao Chu, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

A surface magnetoelectric effect is revealed by density-functional calculations that are applied to ferromagnetic Fe(001), Ni(001), and Co(0001) films in the presence of an external electric field. The effect originates from spin-dependent screening of the electric field which leads to notable changes in the surface magnetization and the surface magnetocrystalline anisotropy. These results are of considerable interest in the area of electrically controlled magnetism and magnetoelectric phenomena.

Interface Effects In Spin-Polarized Metal/Insulator Layered Structures, Julian P. Velev, Peter A. Dowben, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Stephen J. Jenkins, A. N. Caruso Sep 2008

Interface Effects In Spin-Polarized Metal/Insulator Layered Structures, Julian P. Velev, Peter A. Dowben, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Stephen J. Jenkins, A. N. Caruso

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Recent advances in thin-film deposition techniques, such as molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition, have allowed for the manufacture of heterostructures with nearly atomically abrupt interfaces. Although the bulk properties of the individual heterostructure components may be well-known, often the heterostructures exhibit novel and sometimes unexpected properties due to interface effects. At heterostructure interfaces, lattice structure, stoichiometry, interface electronic structure (bonding, interface states, etc.), and symmetry all conspire to produce behavior different from the bulk constituents. This review discusses why knowledge of the electronic structure and composition at the interfaces is pivotal to the understanding of the properties of …

Lead Chalcogenide Nano-Composites: Synthesis, Thermal And Electrical Transport Properties, Bo Zhang Aug 2008

Lead Chalcogenide Nano-Composites: Synthesis, Thermal And Electrical Transport Properties, Bo Zhang

All Dissertations

This dissertation focused on the investigation of the thermoelectric properties of PbTe nanocomposites, presenting a series of experimental investigation and qualitative theoretical analysis regarding utilizing the nanostructures to enhance the thermoelectrical properties. Three innovative synthesis techniques, which are related to fabricating nanocomposites, were developed. These three techniques are the size-selective growth of PbTe nanoparticles by a convection CVD technique, the nanolayer coating technique by hydrothermal method, and the alkali-metal-nano-surface-treatment. In the future, these techniques can be applied to many other thermoelectric material systems.

We proposed to use the grain boundary engineering technique route in the thermoelectric nanocomposite field and successfully …

The Effects Of Nanoparticle Inclusions Upon The Microstructure And Thermoelectric Transport Properties Of Bismuth Telluride-Based Composites, Nick Gothard Aug 2008

The Effects Of Nanoparticle Inclusions Upon The Microstructure And Thermoelectric Transport Properties Of Bismuth Telluride-Based Composites, Nick Gothard

All Dissertations

Research into materials that have high efficiencies of thermoelectric heat-energy conversion has been at a plateau since the middle of the last century. During this time, efficiencies have been engineered high enough for several interesting niche applications but not high enough for widespread adaptation into traditional power generation or refrigeration technologies. The past decade has seen considerable advancement as a number of theoretical works have suggested that lower dimensional structures could hold the key for enhanced efficiency, and several experiments have provided the proof of principle needed to inspire just such a research direction. The benefit of low dimensional structures …

3-D Calculation Of Atom-Surface Collisions With Direct Scattering, Trapping And Desorption, Guoqing Fan Aug 2008

3-D Calculation Of Atom-Surface Collisions With Direct Scattering, Trapping And Desorption, Guoqing Fan

All Dissertations

In this work a scattering theory is developed to simulate the gas-surface scattering procedure in three dimensions, using an iterative algorithm and classical mechanics for the collision process, that describes both direct scattering and trapping-desorption of an incident beam of atomic particles. The initially trapped fraction of particles can be followed as they continue to make further collisions with the surface until they are all eventually promoted back into the positive energy continuum and leave the surface region.

With two different models, the discrete model and the smooth-surface model of the differential reflection coefficient, a series of calculation are made …

Received 2 April 2008; published 1 August 2008; corrected 1 October 2008

At high area fractions, monolayers of colloidal dimer particles form a degenerate crystal (DC) structure in which the particle lobes occupy triangular lattice sites while the particles are oriented randomly along any of the three lattice directions. We report that dislocation glide in DCs is blocked by certain particle orientations. The mean number of lattice constants between such obstacles is Z̅ exp=4.6±0.2 in experimentally observed DC grains and Z̅ sim=6.18±0.01 in simulated monocrystalline DCs. Dislocation propagation beyond these obstacles is observed to proceed through dislocation reactions. …

Thermal Coulomb Drag In A Bi-Layer Semiconductor System, Florin Lung Jul 2008

Thermal Coulomb Drag In A Bi-Layer Semiconductor System, Florin Lung

All Theses

In this work, we investigate the existence of a thermoelectric effect that consists of the appearance of an electric field in one layer when a temperature gradient is applied in the other layer of a double quantum well system. This represents a generalization of the Seebeck effect to the case of two spatially separated electron systems allowed to interact only through the Coulomb repulsion. The induced electric field results from the momentum transfer between the electrons driven out of equilibrium by the temperature gradient and the electrons at rest in the passive layer, a mechanism known in the literature as …

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In Three-Dimensional Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers, Suyang Zhang Jul 2008

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In Three-Dimensional Thin Films Exposed To Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers, Suyang Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal analysis related to ultrashort-pulsed lasers has been intensely studied in science and engineering communities in recent years, because the pulse duration of ultrashort-pulsed lasers is only the order of sub-picoseconds to femtoseconds, and the lasers have exclusive capabilities in limiting the undesirable spread of the thermal process zone in the heated sample. Studying the thermal deformation induced by ultrashort-pulsed lasers is essential for preventing thermal damage. For the ultrashort-pulsed laser, the thermal damage is different from that caused by the long pulsed lasers and cracks occur after heating.

This dissertation presents a new finite difference method for studying thermal …

Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction Studies Of Indium Phosphide (100) And Growth On Indium And Indium Nitride On Silicon (100), Mohamed Abd-Elsattar Hafez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Study of the effects of atomic hydrogen exposure on structure and morphology of semiconductor surfaces is important for fundamental properties and applications. In this dissertation, the electron yield of a hydrogen-cleaned indium phosphide (InP) surface was measured and correlated to the development of the surface morphology, which was monitored by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Atomic hydrogen treatment produced a clean, well-ordered, and (2x4)-reconstructed InP(100) surface. The quantum efficiency, after activation to negative electron affinity, and the secondary electron emission were shown to increase with hydrogen cleaning time. RHEED patterns of low-index InP(100) surface were modified by the …

Structural Identification Of Cubic Iron-Oxide Nanocrystal Mixtures: X-Ray Powder Diffraction Versus Quasi-Kinematic Transmission Electron Microscopy, Peter Moeck

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two novel (and proprietary) strategies for the structural identification of a nanocrystal from either a single high-resolution (HR) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image or a single precession electron diffraction pattern are proposed and their advantages discussed in comparison to structural fingerprinting from powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Simulations for cubic magnetite and maghemite nanocrystals are used as examples.

Oligo(Vinylidene Fluoride) Langmuir-Blodgett Films Studied By Spectroscopic, Rafal Korlacki, J. Travis Johnston, Jihee Kim, Stephen Ducharme, Daniel W. Thompson, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Zhongxin Ge, James M. Takacs

Stephen Ducharme Publications

Thin films of amphiphilic vinylidene fluoride oligomers prepared by Langmuir–Blodgett deposition on silicone substrates were investigated by comparing experimental and theoretical mid-infrared (IR) spectra. The experimental spectra were obtained using infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry. Theoretical spectra were calculated using density functional theory. Excellent correspondence of major IR bands in both data sets shows that the molecular backbone is oriented with the long axis normal to the substrate plane. This is in contrast to poly vinylidene fluoride[1] LB films, in which the polymer chains are parallel to the substrate.

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe2O4 by optical and Mossbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in this multiferroic material. We demonstrate that charge fluctuation has an onset well below the charge ordering transition, supporting the ‘‘order by fluctuation’’ mechanism for the development of charge order superstructure. Bragg splitting and large magneto-optical contrast suggest a low-temperature monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.

Photoconductivity In Bifeo3 Thin Films, S. R. Basu, L. W. Martin, Y. H. Chu, M. Gajek, R. Ramesh, R. C. Rai, X. S. Xu, J. L. Musfeldt

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

The optical properties of epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films have been characterized in the visible range. Variable temperature spectra show an absorption onset near 2.17 eV, a direct gap (2.667±0.005 eV at 300 K), and charge transfer excitations at higher energy. Additionally, we report photoconductivity in BiFeO3 films under illumination from a 100 mW/cm2 white light source. A direct correlation is observed between the magnitude of the photoconductivity and postgrowth cooling pressure. Dark conductivities increased by an order of magnitude when comparing films cooled in 760 and 0.1 Torr. Large increases in photoconductivity are observed in light.

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

BiFeO3 thin films have been deposited on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by adsorption-controlled reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. For a given bismuth overpressure and oxygen activity, single-phase BiFeO3 films can be grown over a range of deposition temperatures in accordance with thermodynamic calculations. Four-circle x-ray diffraction reveals phase-pure, epitaxial films with w rocking curve full width at half maximum values as narrow as 29 arc sec (0.008°). Multiple-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry reveals a direct optical band gap at 2.74 eV for stoichiometric as well as 5% bismuth-deficient single-phase BiFeO3 films.

Use Of Di- And Tripropionate Substrate Analogs To Probe The Active Site Of Human Recombinant Coproporphyrinogen Oxidase, Justin B. Morgenthaler, Reyna L. Barto, Timothy D. Lash, Marjorie A. Jones

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Background: Defects in the enzyme coproporphyrinogen oxidase result in accumulation of porphyrins which may affect the severity of a subset of porphyrias. Thus evaluation of this enzyme for substrate selectivity is of value. Kinetic evaluations of recombinant human coproporphyrinogen oxidase have been undertaken using six di- and tripropionate analogs of the natural substrate coproporphyrinogen-III. These Substrate analogs were modified by having alkyl groups in place of one or both of the ring 13- or 17-propionate moieties. Material/Methods: Cloned human enzyme was incubated with analogs under apparent first order conditions and with various substrate concentrations. The kinetic values, K-m and V-max, …

This paper provides a quantitative comparison and explores the design space of lead zirconium titanate (PZT)–only and PZT-on-silicon length-extensional mode resonators for incorporation into radio frequency microelectromechanical system filters and oscillators. We experimentally measured the correlation of motional impedance (RX) and quality factor (Q) with the resonators’ silicon layer thickness (tSi). For identical lateral dimensions and PZT-layer thicknesses (tPZT), the PZT-on-silicon resonator has higher resonant frequency (fC), higher Q (5100 versus 140), lower RX (51 Ω versus 205 Ω), and better linearity [third-order input intercept …

Study Of Structural And Spectroscopic Properties Of Small Zns Clusters By Dft, Venkata Ramana Chaganti

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The small clusters (aggregates of atoms containing a few tens of atoms) of semiconductors and metals often adopt very different shapes than the fragments of these materials in the bulk phase. Due to their large surface to volume ratio and unsaturated bonds, the small clusters often have properties that are very different from their bulk. Semiconductor clusters are extensively studied for their potential applications in a wide variety of systems from opto-electronic devices to spintronics. The present work is devoted to understanding the structural and electronic properties of small clusters of the zinc sulfide ZnnSn where n = 1 …

Fabrication Of Switchable Liquid Crystal Devices Using Surface Relief Gratings In Photopolymer, Pavani Kotakonda, Izabela Naydenova, Robert Howard, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

Holographically recorded surface relief gratings in dry, self-developing acrylamide based photopolymer were used to fabricate two types of switchable liquid crystal (LC) device. One is an electrically switchable LC diffraction grating and the other is an electrically switchable polarization rotator. The electrically switchable diffraction grating was characterized by measuring the dependence of the intensity in the first diffracted order on the applied electric field. The polarization rotator was characterized by studying the influence of the applied electric field on the twist angle and the variation of intensity in the zero and the first orders of diffraction.
