The data for this project were collected at Marshall Space Flight Center. The epoxy “glue dot” samples were mounted inside a high vacuum (<10-4 Pa) chamber on a Black Kapton substrate attached to a large grounded metal plate, cooled with liquid nitrogen to ~120 K. An electron gun was used to bombard the sample with electrons of a known energy (12 to 40 keV) and flux density (0.3 to 5 nA/cm2), similar to what would be seen in a typical space environment. Light emitted from the samples was monitored with …

Dependence Of Electrostatic Field Strength On Voltage Ramp Rate For Spacecraft Materials, Krysta Moser, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

This work investigated the dependence of electrostatic field strength for spacecraft materials on voltage ramp rate, by applying an increasing electrostatic field until electrostatic breakdown (a permanent, catastrophic failure of a dielectric material) occurs. Enhanced understanding of prolonged exposure to high static electric fields (DC aging) of insulating materials based on expanded experimental studies is of critical to understand the physics of highly disordered insulating materials, as well as for applications in spacecraft charging, high voltage DC power transmission cables and switching, thin film dielectrics, and semiconductor devices and sensors. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and the associated material breakdown at the …

Presentations

This paper discusses an effort to develop advanced pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) measurement system capabilities that incorporate state-of-the-art hardware and improved signal processing and modeling to characterize embedded charge distributions in thin dielectric films. Objectives in developing this system include: (1) improved spatial resolution, while maintaining reasonable temporal resolution; (2) improved signal processing tools for increased signal/noise ratios; (3) integrated PEA modeling tools; and (4) integrated environmental controls. We emphasize system improvements required to achieve high spatial resolution for in vacuo measurements of thin dielectrics charged using electron beam injection, which are most applicable for spacecraft charging tests. PEA measurement systems …

Mixed Weibull Distribution Model Of Dc Dielectric Breakdowns With Dual Defect Modes, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Oct 2015

Mixed Weibull Distribution Model Of Dc Dielectric Breakdowns With Dual Defect Modes, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Purpose/Aim

This work proposes an enhanced statistical model for DC dielectric breakdown properties, which incorporates both shallow and deep defect modes. By incorporating these physics-based concepts into a traditionally empirical model, its accuracy and utility can be extended.

Experimental/Modeling methods

Voltage step-up tests were performed for various polymeric films. The distributions of the breakdown fields are fit to standard two- and three-parameter Weibull distributions. These are extended for a dual defect model, with separate mean energies for shallow and deep level traps, using mixed Weibull distributions.

Results/discussion

As shown in Fig 1, such enhanced physics-based statistical models can result in …

Comparing Experimental Apples And Oranges With Quantile-Quantile Plots, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Oct 2015

Comparing Experimental Apples And Oranges With Quantile-Quantile Plots, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

An important question often encountered in experimental physics is, are two observables related or not? Quantile-quantile (q-q) analysis compares the cumulative distributions of two observations (or one set of observations and a theoretical curve) in a way that is both visually apparent and statistically quantifiable. If the two observables follow the same distribution, the q-q plot will be linear; if they are identical the plot will have unity slope. Deviations from a linear q-q plot indicate that the two observables do not follow the same distribution. We show that the q-q analysis method is applicable to a wide range of …

Dependence Of Electrostatic Field Strength On Voltage Ramp Rates For Spacecraft Materials, Krysta Moser, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Previous tests done by the USU Materials Physics Group (MPG) using our electrostatic discharge (ESD) custom vacuum chamber have found that, for the polymeric materials polyimide and low density polyethylene (LDPE), the electrostatic field strength at breakdown depends on the voltage ramp rate applied across the materials. At ramp rates an order of magnitude lower than the maximum recommended rate of 500 V/s, the breakdown electrostatic field strength was also found to be significantly lower. The data from these tests were compared to a microscopic mean field theory for dielectric breakdown in highly disordered insulating materials. We present new ramp …

Materials At The Atomic Scale: A Key To Exploring The Vast Reaches Of Space, Jr Dennison

Presentations

A critical technology to master for any interplanetary probe is mitigation of risks from spacecraft charging and electrostatic discharge, which cause the majority of environmentally-induced “anomalies.” Understanding how charge is acquired through interaction with space fluxes of electrons, ions and photons; how temperature, dose and fields affect redistributed of charge within spacecraft materials; and what triggers electrostatic arcs all require the study of how charged particles interact with the structure of materials on an atomic scale. This seminar presents an overview of the dynamic properties of materials underlying spacecraft charging, how the material’s structure affects these properties, which properties are …

Calibration Of Muon Detector For Coincidence Cathodoluminescence Experiments, Kenneth Zia, Jr Dennison

Presentations

A muon scintillation detector has been calibrated by measuring the magnitude and angular dependence of high energy cosmic background radiation events. Optimizing dark current as a function of voltage across the photomultiplier tube (PMT) detector was essential for accurate counting of current pulses as narrow as the counts in the PMT. Measurements of the crosssection zenith angle were also optimized by sweeping the detector across the horizon and from the zenith to nadir angle. The detector is now operating within proper Poisson distribution statistics for counting particle experiments, and is ready for the next step in determining coincidence between the …

Electron Penetration Range For Every Body, Anne Starley, Lisa Montierth Phillipps, Jr Dennison Apr 2015

Electron Penetration Range For Every Body, Anne Starley, Lisa Montierth Phillipps, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The penetration range of an electron into diverse materials can be estimated using an approximation fit as a function of a single parameter, N y, which describes the effective number of valence electrons. This fit is found using the Continuous-Slow Down-Approximation (CSDA), which simplifies the process of estimating an expected penetration range of a given material by applying some of the material’s key characteristics. Using the CSDA, a simple composite analytical formula is created which estimates the range or maximum penetration depth of incident electrons. This formula generates an approximation to the range using the parameter, Nv . The range …

Model For Charge Injection With Electron Beams Into Highly Disordered Insulating Materials, Jr Dennison, Alec M. Sim, Gregory Wilson

Presentations

The Walden-Wintle model for charge injection and transport through highly disordered insulating materials has been extended to include charge injection with a charged particle beam. The original model is applicable to charge injection in a dielectric material from a pair of electrodes in a parallel-plate geometry. It provides a versatile approach to predict the time-dependent current at a rear grounded electrode and the incident surface voltage, as the injection current density evolves over time with the development of a space charge barrier near the injection electrode. The Walden-Wintle model has been applied to many standard cases including Fowler-Nordheim injection, Schottky …

Modeling The Energy Dependent Cathodoluminescent Intensity Of A Carbon Composite Material, Justin Christensen, Kelby T. Peterson, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison

Presentations

When highly disordered insulating materials are subjected to energetic electron bombardment they can emit photons. This process is termed “cathodoluminescence.” This occurs in the space plasma environment and is an important phenomenon to understand when designing any object to be put into space. Light emitted from spacecraft materials can affect optical detection, and can cause stray-light contamination in space-based observatories. The Materials Physics Group at Utah State University uses an ultra-high vacuum chamber equipped with electron guns and a cryostat to control the sample temperature to simulate the space environment and to observe its affects on sample materials. Previous studies …

Discharge Breakdown Analyses, Sam Hansen, Jr Dennison, Allen Andersen

Presentations

Material breakdown due to Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the primary cause of spacecraft damage due to environment interactions in space. This occurs when the space plasma fluxes charge a craft to high voltages where insulating craft materials then break down. This failure allows current to flow freely through the material, this can damage or destroy onboard electrical systems. My project focuses on the effects of these breakdowns on suspect materials commonly used for electrical insulation in space. The USU Material Physics Group has performed ESD tests on hundreds of samples to date. The ESD damage sites of these samples have …

Lifetimes Of Polymeric Dielectrics: A Dual-Defect Model, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause catastrophic failures in electronic devices. Estimating the lifetime of dielectrics under prolonged high field exposure is a major design concern for applications including spacecraft, high voltage DC power transmission, and semiconductor electronics. Dielectric strengths listed in engineering handbooks are primarily based on cursory measurements with poor repeatability and tend to overestimate ESD fields in real applications. Standard measurements subject test samples to ~500 V/s ramp rates until breakdown. We present the results of ESD studies in two prototypical polymer dielectrics using a ramp rate of ~20 V/4s until breakdown together with tests applying a static …

Cathodolumiescence Studies Of The Density Of States Of Disordered Silicon Dioxide, Jr Dennison, Amberly Evans Jensen

Presentations

Electron bombardment measurements have shown that disordered SiO2 exhibits cathodoluminescence, with an overall intensity that varies with incident electron beam energy and current density, sample temperature, exposure time, and wavelength. A simple model based on the defect density of states—used to explain electron transport in highly disordered insulating materials—has been extended to predict the relative cathodoluminescent intensity and spectral radiance for disordered SiO 2 as a function of these variables. The spectral radiance exhibited four distinct bands, corresponding to four distinct energy distributions of defect states within the band gap; each showed different temperature dependence. These localized defect or “trap” …

Cathodoluminescence Events Coincident With Muon Detection, Kenneth Zia, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Samples of highly disordered insulating material have been irradiated with keV electron beams, resulting in three forms of electron induced light emission with differing duration: arcs (duration), “flares” (~100 s), and cathodoluminescence (as long as beam is on) [Dennison, 2013]. The arc and cathodoluminescence phenomena are well understood, while the flares’ origins are not. Flares were observed at intervals of ~2 per hr. This is within a factor of 2 for the expected muon cross section at an altitude of Logan, UT (1370 m) caused by high altitude cosmic rays; those high energy particles could have deposited sufficient energy throughout …

Dual-Defect Model Of Electrostatic Discharge In Polymeric Dielectrics, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a serious concern for spacecraft, high voltage power transmission, and other applications. A parallel plate capacitor geometry under high vacuum was used to apply increasing voltages across insulating samples until ESD breakdown and to apply sub-critical fields and observe time-to-breakdown. Transient arcing was frequently observed prior to complete ESD breakdown in both cases. Results are presented for two prototypical polymeric materials, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyimide (PI or Kapton HN™) in terms of both statistical and physics-based models.

Many electrical aging models are described by defect creation within the material from bond stress due to …
