Voltage-controlled room temperature isothermal reversible spin crossover switching of [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] thin films is demonstrated. This isothermal switching is evident in thin film bilayer structures where the molecular spin crossover film is adjacent to a molecular ferroelectric. The adjacent molecular ferroelectric, either polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene or croconic acid (C5H2O5), appears to lock the spin crossover [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] molecular complex largely in the low or high spin state depending on the direction of ferroelectric polarization. In both a planar two terminal diode structure and a …

Advances in scaling down heterostructures and having an improved interface quality together with atomically thin two-dimensional materials suggest a novel approach to systematically design materials. A given material can be transformed through proximity effects whereby it acquires properties of its neighbors, for example, becoming superconducting, magnetic, topologically nontrivial, or with an enhanced spin–orbit coupling. Such proximity effects not only complement the conventional methods of designing materials by doping or functionalization but also can overcome their various limitations. In proximitized materials, it is possible to realize properties that are not present in any constituent region of the considered heterostructure. While the …

Phonon Order And Reststrahlen Bands Of Polar Vibrations In Crystals With Monoclinic Symmetry, Mathias Schubert, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Vanya Darakchieva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this Rapid Communication, we present the order of the phonon modes and the appearance of the reststrahlen bands for monoclinic symmetry materials with polar lattice vibrations. Phonon modes occur in associated pairs of transverse and longitudinal optical modes, and pairs either belong to inner or outer phonon modes. Inner modes are nested within outer modes. Outer modes cause polarization-dependent reststrahlen bands. Inner modes cause polarization-independent reststrahlen bands. The directional limiting frequencies within the Born-Huang approach are bound to within outer mode frequency regions not occupied by inner mode pairs. Hence, an unusual phonon mode order can occur where both …

A complete set of infrared-active and Raman-active lattice modes is obtained from density functional theory calculations for single-crystalline centrosymmetric orthorhombic neodymium gallate. The results for infrared-active modes are compared with an analysis of the anisotropic long-wavelength properties using generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. The frequency-dependent dielectric function tensor and dielectric loss function tensor of orthorhombic neodymium gallium oxide are reported in the spectral range of 80–1200 cm−1. A combined eigendielectric displacement vector summation and dielectric displacement loss vector summation approach augmented by considerations of lattice anharmonicity is utilized to describe the experimentally determined tensor elements. All infrared-active transverse and longitudinal …

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of pristine and Co-substituted ε-Fe2O3 is investigated by density functional calculations. The epsilon-iron oxide is the only polymorph of Fe2O3 magnetoelectric in its antiferromagnetic ground states other crystalline forms being α-Fe2O3 (hematite), β-Fe2O3, and γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite). The magnetizations of the four iron sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned with slightly different magnetic moments resulting in a ferrimagnetic structure. Compared to the naturally occurring hematite and maghemite, bulk ε-Fe2O3 is difficult to prepare, but ε-Fe2O3 nanomaterials of different …

Permanent-magnet materials are one cornerstone of today’s technology, abundant in disk drives, motors, medical equipment, wind gen- erators, and cars. A continuing challenge has been to reconcile high permanent-magnet performance with low raw-material costs. This work reports a Mn-Bi-Sn alloy exclusively made from inexpensive elements, exhibiting high values of Curie-temperature, magnetization, anisotropy, coercivity, and energy product. The samples are produced by field annealing of rapidly quenched Sn-containing MnBi alloys, where the improvement of the magnetic properties is caused by the substitutional occupancy of the 2c sites in the hexagonal NiAs structure by Sn. The substitution modifies the electronic structure of …

A nonequilibrium rapid-quenching method has been used to fabricate NiMnIn and NiMnGa alloys that are chemically and morphologically similar but crystallographically and physically very different. NiMnGa crystallizes in a Ni2In-type hexagonal structure, whereas NiMnIn is a cubic Heusler alloy. Both alloys yield a topological Hall effect contribution corresponding to bubble-type skyrmion spin structures, but it occurs in much lower magnetic fields in NiMnIn as compared to NiMnGa. The effect is unrelated to net Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which are absent in both alloys due to their inversion-symmetric crystal structures. Based on magnetic-force microscopy, we explain the difference between the two alloys by …

The structural and magnetic properties of Co2Ge nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by the cluster-beam deposition (CBD) technique have been investigated. As-made particles with an average size of 5.5 nm exhibit a mixture of hexagonal and orthorhombic crystal structures. Thermomagnetic measurements showed that the as-made particles are superparamagnetic at room temperature with a blocking temperature (TB) of 20 K. When the particles are annealed at 823 K for 12 h, their size is increased to 13 nm and they develop a new orthorhombic crystal structure, with a Curie temperature (TC) of 815 K. This …

The management of irradiation defects is one of key challenges for structural materials in current and future reactor systems. To develop radiation tolerant alloys for service in extreme irradiation environments, the Fe self-ion radiation response of nanocomposites composed of amorphous silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) and crystalline Fe(Cr) were examined at 10, 20, and 50 displacements per atom damage levels. Grain growth in width direction was observed to increase with increasing irradiation dose in both Fe(Cr) films and Fe(Cr) layers in the nanocomposite after irradiation at room temperature. However, compared to the Fe(Cr) film, the Fe(Cr) layers in the nanocomposite exhibited ~50% …

The structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Fe deficient Pr2-xNdxFe17 (x = 0.5, 0.7) alloys prepared by arc-melting and melt- spinning have been investigated. The room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns show that the samples are nearly single-phase and crystallize in the rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type crystal structure. The Curie temperatures determined from the thermomagnetic curves are 302 K and 307 K for Pr1.5Nd0.5Fe17 and Pr1.3Nd0.7Fe17, respectively. The peak magnetic entropy change and the relative cooling power at field change of 50 kOe …

The onset of ferromagnetism in cobalt-tin alloys is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The Co1+xSn alloys were prepared by rapid quenching from the melt and form a modified hexagonal NiAs-type crystal structure for 0.45 ≤ x ≤ 1. The magnetic behavior is described analytically and by density-functional theory using supercells and the coherent-potential approximation. The excess of Co concentration x, which enters the interstitial 2d sites in the hypothetical NiAs-ordered parent alloy CoSn, yields a Griffiths-like phase and, above a quantum critical point (xc ≈ 0.65), a quantum phase …

Neutron powder diffraction has been used to investigate the spin structure of the hard-magnetic alloy Fe3+xCo3−xTi2 (x = 0, 2, 3). The materials are produced by rapid quenching from the melt, they possess a hexagonal crystal structure, and they are nanocrystalline with crystallite sizes D of the order of 40 nm. Projections of the magnetic moment onto both the crystalline c axis and the basal plane were observed. The corresponding misalignment angle exhibits a nonlinear decrease with x, which we explain as a micromagnetic effect caused by Fe-Co site disorder. The underlying physics is a …

Thin films of Co2TiSi on MgO are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The films were produced by magnetron sputtering on MgO(001) and have a thickness of about 100 nm. As bulk Co2TiSi, they crystallize in the normal cubic Heusler (L21) structure, but the films are slightly distorted (c/a = 1.0014) and contain some antisite disorder. The films exhibit a robust perpendicular anisotropy of 0.5 MJ m−3. This result is surprising for several reasons. First, surface and interface anisotropies are too small to explain perpendicular anisotropy in such rather thick …

In this letter, we investigate a set of n-type single crystals of monoclinic symmetry β-Ga2O3 with different free electron concentration values by generalized far infrared and infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry. In excellent agreement with our previous model prediction, we find here by experiment that longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes are polarized either within the monoclinic plane or perpendicular to the monoclinic plane. As predicted, all modes change the amplitude and frequency with the free electron concentration. The most important observation is that all longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes polarized within the monoclinic plane continuously change their direction as a function of …

We formulate and study the general boundary conditions dictating the magnetization profile in the vicinity of an interface between magnets with dissimilar properties. Boundary twists in the vicinity of an edge due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions have been first discussed by Wilson et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 214420 (2013)] and by Rohart and Thiaville [Phys. Rev. B 88, 184422 (2013)]. We show that in general case the boundary conditions lead to the magnetization profile corresponding to the Néel, Bloch, or intermediate twist. We explore how such twists can be utilized for creation of skyrmions and antiskyrmions, e.g., in a view …

Nodal-line semimetals are characterized by symmetry-protected band crossing lines and are expected to exhibit nontrivial electronic properties. Connections of the multiple nodal lines, resulting in nodal nets, chains, or links, are envisioned to produce even more exotic quantum states. In this work, we propose a feasible approach to realize tunable nodal-line connections in real materials. We show that certain space group symmetries support the coexistence of the planar symmetry-enforced and accidental nodal lines, which are robust to spin-orbit coupling and can be tailored into intricate patterns by chemical substitution, pressure, or strain. Based on first-principles calculations, we identify nonsymmorphic centrosymmetric …

A magnetoelectric memory cell with domain - wall - mediated switching is implemented using a split gate architecture . The split gate architecture allows a domain wall to be trapped within a magnetoelectric antiferromagnetic ( MEAF ) active layer . An extension of this architecture applies to multiple gate linear arrays that can offer advantages in memory density , programmability , and logic functionality . Applying a small anisotropic in - plane shear strain to the MEAF can block domain wall precession to improve reliability and speed of switching

CuMnAs with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is proposed as an active material for antiferromagnetic memory. Information can be stored in the antiferromagnetic domain state, while writing and readout can rely on the existence of surface magnetization. It is predicted, based on first-principles calculations, that easy-axis anisotropy can be achieved in bulk CuMnAs by substituting a few percent of As atoms by Ge, Si, Al, or B. This effect is attributed to the changing occupation of certain electronic bands near the Fermi level induced by hole doping. The calculated temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy does not exhibit any anomalies. Thin CuMnAs(001) …

The type-II Dirac fermions that are characterized by a tilted Dirac cone and anisotropic magnetotransport properties have been recently proposed theoretically and confirmed experimentally. Here, we predict the emergence of two-dimensional (2D) type-II Dirac fermions in LaAlO3/LaNiO3/LaAlO3 quantum-well structures. Using first-principles calculations and model analyses, we show that the Dirac points are formed at the crossing between the dx2−y2 and dz2 bands protected by the mirror symmetry. The energy position of the Dirac points can be tuned to appear at the Fermi energy by changing the quantum-well width. For …

We use nano disk arrays with square and honeycomb symmetry to investigate magnetic phases and spin correlations of XY dipolar systems at the micro scale. Utilizing magnetization sensitive X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, we probe magnetic ground states and the “order-by-disorder” phenomenon predicted 30 years ago. We observe the antiferromagnetic striped ground state in square lattices, and 6-fold symmetric structures, including trigonal vortex lattices and disordered floating vortices, in the honeycomb lattice. The spin frustration in the honeycomb lattice causes a phase transition from a long-range ordered locked phase over a floating phase with quasi long-range order and indications of a …

Out-of-plane ferroelectricity with a high transition temperature in nanometer-scale films is required to miniaturize electronic devices. Direct visualization of stable ferroelectric polarization and its switching behavior in atomically thick films is critical for achieving this goal. Here, ferroelectric order at room temperature in the two-dimensional limit is demonstrated in tetragonal BiFeO3 ultrathin films. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we directly observed robust out-of-plane spontaneous polarization in one-unitcell-thick BiFeO3 films. High-resolution piezoresponse force microscopy measurements show that the polarization is stable and switchable, whereas a tunneling electroresistance effect of up to 370% is achieved in BiFeO3 films. …

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely investigated and utilized as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast and therapy agents due to their large magnetic moments. Local field inhomogeneities caused by these high magnetic moments are used to generate T2 contrast in clinical high-field MRI, resulting in signal loss (darker contrast). Here we present strong T1 contrast enhancement (brighter contrast) from SPIONs (diameters from 11 nm to 22 nm) as observed in the ultra-low field (ULF) MRI at 0.13 mT. We have achieved a high longitudinal relaxivity for 18 nm SPION solutions, r1 = 615 s−1 mM−1, which is two …

Recent experimental results have demonstrated ferroelectricity in thin films of SrTiO3 induced by antisite TiSr defects. This opens a possibility to use SrTiO3 as a barrier layer in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs)—emerging electronic devices promising for applications in nanoelectronics. Here using density functional theory combined with quantum-transport calculations applied to a prototypical Pt/SrTiO3/Pt FTJ, we demonstrate that the localized in-gap energy states produced by the antisite TiSr defects are responsible for the enhanced electron tunneling conductance which can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization. Our tight-binding modeling, which takes into account multiple defects, shows that …

Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigate the dominant defects formed by boron (B) and carbon (C) impurities in a CoFe/MgO/CoFe magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and their influence on conductivity and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR). We find that, in the O-poor conditions relevant to experiment, B forms the substitutional defect BCo and C forms the interstitial site Ci at the CoFe/MgO interface. The C-doped MTJ is predicted to have a significantly higher TMR than the B-doped MTJ. This is due to interface state densities associated with the majority spin Δ1-symmetry bands being more heavily suppressed by the B …

Persistent spin texture (PST) is the property of some materials to maintain a uniform spin configuration in the momentum space. This property has been predicted to support an extraordinarily long spin lifetime of carriers promising for spintronics applications. Here, we predict that there exists a class of noncentrosymmetric bulk materials, where the PST is enforced by the nonsymmorphic space group symmetry of the crystal. Around certain high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone, the sublattice degrees of freedom impose a constraint on the effective spin–orbit field, which orientation remains independent of the momentum and thus maintains the PST. We illustrate …

Complex-oxide materials exhibit physical properties that involve the interplay of charge and spin degrees of freedom. However, an ambipolar oxide that is able to exhibit both electron-doped and hole-doped ferromagnetism in the same material has proved elusive. Here we report ambipolar ferromagnetism in LaMnO3, with electron–hole asymmetry of the ferromagnetic order. Starting from an undoped atomically thin LaMnO3 film, we electrostatically dope the material with electrons or holes according to the polarity of a voltage applied across an ionic liquid gate. Magnetotransport characterization reveals that an increase of either electron-doping or hole-doping induced ferromagnetic order in this …

We propose a magnon realization of 3D topological insulator in the AIII (chiral symmetry) topological class. The topological magnon gap opens due to the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. The existence of the topological invariant is established by calculating the bulk winding number of the system. Within our model, the surface magnon Dirac cone is protected by the sublattice chiral symmetry. By analyzing the magnon surface modes, we confirm that the backscattering is prohibited. By weakly breaking the chiral symmetry, we observe the magnon Hall response on the surface due to opening of the gap. Finally, we show that by changing …
