Harnessing Wavefront Shaping Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara Apr 2026

Harnessing Wavefront Shaping Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara

Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference

Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enable deep, non-invasive sensing in biological tissue but are fundamentally limited by the photon budget - most injected light is lost to scattering before reaching the detector. Wavefront shaping (WFS) can enhance signal strength inside scattering media via interference, but the conventional diffusion-based sensitivity model breaks down under coherent illumination. We develop a microscopic theory of optical sensitivity that captures interference effects neglected by diffusion theory. We prove analytically that the microscopic and diffusive descriptions coincide under random illumination and identify WFS strategies that enhance sensitivity beyond this limit. The maximum …

Enhanced Superconductivity And Vortex Dynamics In Quasi-1d Tas2 Nanowires, Mathew Pollard, Visakha Ho, Clarissa Wisner, Eric W. Bohannan, Yew San Hor

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the synthesis of high-quality 2H-TaS2 nanowires via a controlled two-step conversion process from TaS3 precursors, achieving robust superconductivity with a transition temperature T c ≈ 3.6K, which is significantly higher than bulk 2H-TaS2 (T c ≈ 0.8K). Structural and compositional analyses confirm phase purity and preserved one-dimensional morphology, while magneto transport measurements reveal an enhanced upper critical field μ 0 H c2 (2K)≈5 T, far exceeding the bulk value (μ0Hc2 (0)≈1.17T), attributed to dimensional confinement and suppression of charge-density wave order. Magnetic characterization demonstrates complex vortex dynamics, including flux jumps and a …

Quantum Critical Behavior Of Diluted Quasi-One-Dimensional Ising Chains, Logan Sowadski, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

(Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) is a unique magnetic material. It features bulk 3D magnetic order at low temperatures, but its quantum critical behavior in a magnetic field is well described by the 1D transverse-field Ising universality class. This behavior is facilitated by the structural arrangement of magnetic (Formula presented.) ions in nearly isolated zig-zag chains. In this work, we investigate the effect of random site dilution on the critical properties of such a quasi-1D quantum Ising system. To this end, we introduce an anisotropic site-diluted 3D transverse-field Ising model. We find that site dilution leads to unconventional activated scaling behavior …

Intercalated van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials host unique magnetic properties due to the interplay of competing interlayer and intralayer exchange couplings, which depend on the intercalant concentration within the van der Waals gaps. Magnetic vdW compound chromium telluride, (Formula presented.), has demonstrated rich magnetic phases at various Cr concentrations, such as the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in (Formula presented.) (equivalently, (Formula presented.)). The compound is created by intercalating 0.25 Cr atom per unit cell within the van der Waals gaps of (Formula presented.). In this work, we report a notably increased Curie Temperature and an emergent in-plane …

Harnessing Coherent-Wave Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara, Arthur Goetschy, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Imaging techniques such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical tomography (DOT) achieve deep, noninvasive sensing in turbid media; however, they are constrained by the photon budget, as most of the injected light is lost to scattering before reaching the detector. Wavefront shaping (WFS) can enhance signal strength via interference at specific locations within scattering media, enhancing light-matter interactions and potentially extending the penetration depth of these techniques. Interpretation of the resulting measurements relies on knowing the optical sensitivity - the relationship between changes in the detected signals and perturbations at a specific location inside the medium; however, conventional diffusion-based …

Spectral Width Of Maximum Deposition Eigenchannels In Diffusive Media, Rohin E. Mcintosh, Arthur Goetschy, Nicholas Bender, Alexey Yamilov, Chia Wei Hsu, Hasan Yllmaz, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The maximum deposition eigenchannel provides the largest possible power delivery to a target region inside a diffusive medium by optimizing the incident wavefront of a monochromatic beam. It originates from constructive interference of scattered waves, which is frequency sensitive. We investigate the spectral width of the maximum deposition eigenchannels over a range of target depths using numerical simulations of a 2D diffusive system. Compared to tight focusing into the system, power deposition to an extended region is more sensitive to frequency detuning. The spectral width of enhanced delivery to a large target displays a rather weak, nonmonotonic variation with target …

Anderson Transition For Light In A Three-Dimensional Random Medium, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao, Sergey E. Skipetrov Jan 2025

Anderson Transition For Light In A Three-Dimensional Random Medium, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao, Sergey E. Skipetrov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study Anderson transition for light in three dimensions by performing large-scale simulations of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered ensembles of perfect-electric-conducting spatially overlapping spheres. A mobility edge that separates diffusive transport and Anderson localization is identified, revealing a sharp transition from diffusion to localization for light. Critical behavior in the vicinity of the mobility edge is well described by a single parameter scaling law. The critical exponent is found to be consistent with the value known for the Anderson transition of the orthogonal universality class. Statistical distribution of total transmission at the mobility edge is described without any fit …

Multiphase Electrochemical Li-Ion Intercalation In Iron Selenite: Evidence Of Fe³⁺/⁴⁺ Redox And Single-Crystal-To-Single-Crystal Topochemical Transformation During Chemical Lithiation, Sutapa Bhattacharya, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Amitava Choudhury

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An iron selenite-based cathode compound, LiFe(SeO3)2, is synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. The bulk purity of the compound is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The crystal structure determined from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement of synchrotron PXRD data perfectly matches the previously reported structure in the I4̅2d space group. The crystal structure is built up of edge-sharing of FeO6 octahedra and LiO4 tetrahedra interconnected by SeO3 trigonal pyramidal units, forming a three-dimensional open framework network with channels through all three axes. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Quantum Materials, Yunsheng Qiu

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this study, attempts were made to grow quantum materials that have recently undergone a profound change of perspective. These materials are involved in intricate macroscopic properties rooted in the subtle nature of quantum physics. To explore our understanding of quantum materials, this study includes three projects: Magnetic Topological Insulators, Topological Superconductors, and high-temperature superconductors.

A Cr-doped Sb2Te3 is added to the category for the magnetic topological insulators project. Their transport properties are studied, and the origin of ferromagnetism is studied. Anomalous Hall effect is observed in the Hall measurements, and serval factors (cooling rate, dopant deficiency) …

Discovery Of An Olivine-Type Lithium Manganese Thiophosphate, Limnps4,: Via A Building Block Approach, Srikanth Balijapelly, Kartik Ghosh, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Amitava Choudhury

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An olivine-type orthothiophospate LiMnPS4 has been synthesized for the first time through a building block approach by reacting preformed ternary lithium thiophospate with MnCl2. Diffuse reflectance measurements show an optical band gap of 2.36 eV, which is further confirmed by DFT calculations. Irreversible weak ferromagnetic ordering and metamagnetism are verified through preliminary magnetic measurements.

Signatures Of A Quantum Griffiths Phase Close To An Electronic Nematic Quantum Phase Transition, Pascal Reiss, David Graf, Amir A. Haghighirad, Thomas Vojta, Amalia I. Coldea

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the vicinity of a quantum critical point, quenched disorder can lead to a quantum Griffiths phase, accompanied by an exotic power-law scaling with a continuously varying dynamical exponent that diverges in the zero-temperature limit. Here, we investigate a nematic quantum critical point in the iron-based superconductor FeSe0.89S0.11 using applied hydrostatic pressure. We report an unusual crossing of the magneto resistivity isotherms in the Non superconducting normal state that features a continuously varying dynamical exponent over a large temperature range. We interpret our results in terms of a quantum Griffiths phase caused by nematic islands that result from the local …

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr Jan 2018

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

Dirac Surface States Of Magnetic Topological Insulators, Seng Huat Lee Jan 2017

Dirac Surface States Of Magnetic Topological Insulators, Seng Huat Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

"Magnetic topological insulator (TI) has been theoretically proposed to be a platform for inducing magnetic monopole and exhibit fascinating quantum phenomena, whereas topological superconductor can host Majorana fermions, particles that are their own antiparticles, which can be manipulated for topological quantum computing. In this dissertation, we experimentally demonstrated that by intercalation of different transition metals in the van der Waals gaps of Bi2Se3 TI, magnetism and even superconductivity can be induced. In FexBi2Se3, antiferromagnetism is induced with a transition temperature at ~ 100 K. Coexistence of the Dirac surface state with …

Computing And The Electrical Transport Properties Of Coupled Quantum Networks, Casey Andrew Cain

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation a number of investigations were conducted on ballistic quantum networks in the mesoscopic range. In this regime, the wave nature of electron transport under the influence of transverse magnetic fields leads to interesting applications for digital logic and computing circuits. The work specifically looks at characterizing a few main areas that would be of interest to experimentalists who are working in nanostructure devices, and is organized as a series of papers. The first paper analyzes scaling relations and normal mode charge distributions for such circuits in both isolated and open (terminals attached) form. The second paper compares …

Analytical And Numerical Studies Of Photo-Injected Charge Transport In Molecularly-Doped Polymers, Amrita Roy Chowdhury Jan 2015

Analytical And Numerical Studies Of Photo-Injected Charge Transport In Molecularly-Doped Polymers, Amrita Roy Chowdhury

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mobility of photo-injected charge carriers in molecularly-doped polymers (MDPs) exhibits a commonly observed, and nearly universal Poole-Frenkel field dependence, µ ~ exp [square root (ß0E)], that has been shown to arise from the correlated Gaussian energy distribution of transport sites encountered by charges undergoing hopping transport through the material. Analytical and numerical studies of photo-injected charge transport in these materials are presented here with an attempt to understand how specific features of the various models developed to describe these systems depend on the microscopic parameters that define them. Specifically, previously published time-of-flight mobility data for the molecularly …
