Dynamics And Manipulation Of Nanomagnets, Liufei Cai Jun 2014

Dynamics And Manipulation Of Nanomagnets, Liufei Cai

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis presents my work on the spin dynamics of nanomagnets and investigates the possibility of manipulating nanomagnets by various means. Most of the work has been published\cite{LC-PRB2010, LC-PRB2012, LC-PRB2013, LC-EPL2014}. Some has been submitted for publication\cite{LC-arxiv2014}. The structure of this thesis is as follows.

In Chapter 1, I present the theory of manipulation of a nanomagnet by rotating ac fields whose frequency is time dependent. Theory has been developed that maps the problem onto Landau-Zener problem. For the linear frequency sweep the switching phase diagrams are obtained on the amplitude of the ac field and the frequency sweep rate. …

Comparison Of The Sharpness Of Tungsten Field Emission Tips From Traditional Electrical Characterization To Tip Geometries Imaged By Scanning Electron Microscopy, Emma C. Reeves Jan 2014

Comparison Of The Sharpness Of Tungsten Field Emission Tips From Traditional Electrical Characterization To Tip Geometries Imaged By Scanning Electron Microscopy, Emma C. Reeves

Departmental Honors Projects

Using field emission data obtained from 11 etched Tungsten successful field emission tips of radius about 20 to 100 nanometers, FN type linear models were compared. The emission tip radii were determined using an iteration method derived from the modified FN linear equation. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy images of 5 successful emitters were obtained. These images were fit to a circular model to estimate the actual radius and compared to empirically predicted radius values. A hyperbolic model was further fit to the images and the circle of similar apex curvature was derived. A method for calculating the electric field …

Based on the standard Botzmann equation in Classical Statistics Mechanics, we have derived a variety of Linear Transport Equations appeared in Sputtering Theory for a random, infinite multi-components medium. The pertinent relations among these Linear Transport Equations have been studied in detail. We have introduced exact classical scattering cross-sections of power potential interaction collision into these Transport Equations and solved them asymptotically by using Laplace Transformation for both isotropic term and anisotropic term. A pool of analytical asymptotic solutions …

Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos Aug 2001

Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos

Dissertations

The topics covered in this thesis are related to two objectives: one refers to the search for methods of improving die critical current density of high-temperature superconductors, a subject which remains of continuing interest for its importance in technological applications. The other direction is aimed at clarifying the phase diagram of high-Tc materials.

The interaction between the structural defects and the vortex system plays a significant role in the capability of these materials to carry large electrical transport currents. Through proton irradiation induced defects we follow the evolution of the critical current density, and its enhancement with increasing point-like defects …
