The estimation of steatosis in a liver graft is mandatory prior to liver transplantation, as the risk of graft failure increases with the level of infiltrated fat. However, the assessment of liver steatosis before transplantation is typically based on a qualitative or semiquantitative characterization by visual inspection and palpation and histological analysis. Thus, there is an unmet need for transplantation surgeons to have access to a diagnostic tool enabling an in situ fast classification of grafts prior to extraction. Babesia bovis parasites present a serious and significant health concern for the beef and dairy industries in many parts of the world. Difficulties associated with the current diagnostic techniques include they are prone to human error (microscopy) or expensive and time consuming (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to perform. Little is known about the biochemical changes in blood that are associated with Babesia infections. The discovery of new biomarkers will lead to improved diagnostic outcomes for the cattle industry. Organic electronic devices have been successively making progress into the commercial market to substitute conventional inorganic electronic devices. The endeavor to improve the performance displayed by organic semiconductor materials has urged a substantial number of researchers set to seek new materials. Accurate rate coefficients of atomic and molecular processes allow us to probe the conditions in space and understand the history of the Universe. Although experimental rate coefficients are the most desirable, availability of accurate rate coefficients of some processes depends on rigorous theoretical studies. In this dissertation, theoretical tools for collisions involving three bodies are discussed and applied to three different reactions. Rate coefficient of the reactive scattering of H2 + D- is computed using the ABC program. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic imaging is a powerful technique for molecular imaging of pathologies associated with the nervous systems including multiple sclerosis research. However, there is no standard methodology or standardized protocol for FTIR imaging of tissue sections that maximize the ability to discriminate between the molecular, white and granular layers, which is essential in the investigation of the mechanism of demyelination process. Quantum Defect Measurements For High Angular Momentum Rydberg States Of Potassium, Abraham Hill

We report measurements of the quantum defect for the f-, g-, and h-states of potassium with principal quantum number n between 26 and 29. Ground state potassium atoms in a magneto-optical trap are excited from the 4s state to the 5p state, then from the 5p state to the ndj state using lasers at 405nm and 980nm, respectively. We then measure the millimeter wave frequencies of the ndj to nl transitions. We extract the quantum defects from these frequency measurements in conjunction with the known d-state quantum defects. A Search For Resonant And Non-Resonant Di-Higgs Production In The Γγbb Channel Using The Atlas Detector, Tyler James Burch

This dissertation presents a search for resonant and non-resonant di-Higgs production in the γγb ̄b final state using data from the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The search is performed on 36.1 fb−1 of data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s= 13 TeV collected in 2015 and 2016.
No significant excesses are observed in this search. The non-resonant analysis sets limits on the HH→γγb ̄b cross-section times branching ratio, with an upper observed (expected) limit of 0.73 (0.93) pb. The observed (expected) limits on the Higgs boson trilinear coupling at 95% Confidence Level (CL) …

A 16-month (July 2018–October 2019) dataset of size-resolved aerosol composition is used to examine the sources and characteristics of five organic acids (oxalate, succinate, adipate, maleate, phthalate) and methanesulfonate (MSA) in Metro Manila, Philippines. As one of the most polluted megacities globally, Metro Manila offers a view of how diverse sources and meteorology impact the relative amounts and size distributions of these species. A total of 66 sample sets were collected with a Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI), of which 54 sets were analyzed for composition. Scientometrics has emerged as one of the prominent and fast-growing fields in the Library and Information Sciences. The present study also deals with the scientometric aspect of one of the prominent fields of Nuclear Science and Technology i.e. Nuclear Waste Management. ”Advancing our understanding of the few-body dynamics in simple atomic systems is one of the most important goals of atomic scattering research. In perturbation theory, this goal entails accurately describing the relative contributions from first versus higher-order mechanisms. One higher-order mechanism that is particularly important for target ionization by a charged-particle impact is known as post-collision interaction (PCI). There, the projectile and the ejected electron interact with each other at least twice. In the first interaction, the projectile transfers sufficient energy for the electron to be lifted to the continuum. The second interaction occurs in the outgoing part of the …

Due to the lack of free neutron targets, studies of the structure of the neutron are typically made by scattering electrons from either ²H or ³He targets. In order to extract useful neutron information from a ³He target, one must understand how the neutron in a ³He system differs from a free neutron by taking into account nuclear effects such as final state interactions and meson exchange currents. The target single spin asymmetry A⁰ʸ is an ideal probe of such effects, as any deviation from zero indicates effects beyond plane wave impulse approximation. Short-range correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high-momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high-momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final-state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from 48Ca to 40Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs …

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction γp→pη using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The η mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, η→π+π−π0, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new η photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of η-MAID 2018 and the latest solution of the …

Optical-Depth Scaling Of Light Scattering From A Dense And Cold Atomic 87Rb Gas, K. J. Kemp, S. J. Roof, M. D. Havey, I. M. Sokolov, D. V. Kupriyanov, W. Guerin

We report investigation of near-resonance light scattering from a cold and dense atomic gas of 87Rb atoms. Measurements are made for probe frequencies tuned near the F=2→ F'=3 nearly closed hyperfine transition, with particular attention paid to the dependence of the scattered light intensity on detuning from resonance, the number of atoms in the sample, and atomic sample size. We find that, over a wide range of experimental variables, the optical depth of the atomic sample serves as an effective single scaling parameter which describes well all the experimental data.
