We studied curvature-driven modifications to the magnetostatic coupling of vortex circulation and polarity in soft-magnetic closely packed cap arrays. A phase diagram for the magnetic remanent/transition states at room temperature as a function of diameter and thickness was assembled. For specimens with vortex remanent state (40 nm-thick Permalloy on 330 nm spherical nanoparticles), both vortex circulation and polarity were visualized. Intercap coupling upon vortex nucleation leads to the formation of vortex circulation patterns in closely packed arrays. The remanent circulation pattern can be tailored choosing the direction of the applied magnetic field with respect to the symmetry axis of the …

Double-resonance laser spectroscopy via the E F 1Σg+, v'=6, J'=0-2 state was used to probe the high vibrational levels of the B"B-bar 1Σu+ state of molecular hydrogen. Resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra were recorded by detecting ion production as a function of energy using a time of flight mass spectrometer. New measurements of energies for the v=51-66 levels for the B"B-bar state of H2 are reported, which, taken with previous results, span the v=46-69 vibrational levels. Results for energy levels are compared to theoretical close-coupled calculations [L. Wolniewicz, T. …

We report measurements of one-, two-, and three-photon processes during the elastic scattering of electrons through 90∘ by helium, argon, and molecular-nitrogen targets, in the presence of 1.17-eV photons from a Nd:YAG laser. The incident energy of the electrons was 200 and 350 eV, and the linear polarization direction of the laser was parallel to the momentum transfer direction. Our measured free-free count rates for the three processes are target independent within the experimental uncertainties, perfectly consistent with the Kroll-Watson approximation, which assumes no interaction of the laser radiation with the target.

The flexoelectric effect, which is a linear coupling between a strain gradient and electrical polarization, is a fundamental electromechanical property of all materials with potential for use in nanoscale devices, where strain gradients can be quite large. We report a study of the dependence of the flexoelectric response on thickness in ultrathin films of polar and non-polar polymers. The measurements of the flexoelectric response in non-polar polyethylene and the polar relaxor polymer polyvinylidene-co-trifluoroethylene-co-chlorofluoroethylene were made using a bent cantilever method and corrected for the contribution from the electrode oxide. The results show that the value of …

Anomalously Large Chiral Sensitivity In The Dissociative Electron Attachment Of 10-Iodocamphor, J. M. Dreiling, F. W. Lewis, J. D. Mills, Timothy J. Gay
Timothy J. Gay Publications
We have studied dissociative electron attachment (DEA) between low energy (≤ 0.6 eV) longitudinally polarized electrons and gas-phase chiral targets of 3-bromocamphor (C10H15BrO), 3-iodocamphor (C10H15IO), and 10-iodocamphor. The DEA rate depends on the sign of the incident electron helicity for a given target handedness, and it varies with both the atomic number (Z) and location of the heaviest atom in the molecule. While simple dynamic mechanisms can account for the asymmetry dependence on Z, they fail to explain the large asymmetry variation with the heavy atom location.

Intermetallic compounds having compositions from HfCo4 to HfCo8 were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. A major crystalline phase, closely related to the orthorhombic Zr2Co11 phase in structure, has been observed in the samples with the composition ranges from HfCo6 to HfCo8. The phase, referred to as either Hf2Co11 or HfCo7 phase in the literature, is actually one common phase, having a broad composition range and referred to as μ-phase in the present paper. In addition to the μ-phase, we …
Eikonal Perturbation Theory In Photoionization, F. Cajiao Vélez, Katarzyna Krajewska, J. Z. Kamiński
Eikonal Perturbation Theory In Photoionization, F. Cajiao Vélez, Katarzyna Krajewska, J. Z. Kamiński
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The eikonal perturbation theory is formulated and applied to photoionization by strong laser pulses. A special emphasis is put on the first order approximation with respect to the binding potential, which is known as the generalized eikonal approximation [2015 Phys. Rev. A 91 053417]. The ordinary eikonal approximation and its domain of applicability is derived from the generalized eikonal approximation. While the former approach is singular for the electron trajectories which return to the potential center, the generalized eikonal avoids this problem. This property makes it a promising tool for further investigations of rescattering and high-order harmonic generation processes.

An illustration showing the unexpected result of an interaction between X-rays and matter, research conducted by UNL physicist Matthias Fuchs, is featured on the cover of the January issue of Physik Journal, a German publication.
The illustration accompanies an article by a scientist in Sweden about the significance of the results that Fuchs and his team originally reported in the journal Nature Physics last August. In the Nature Physics article, the team described their research on the phenomenon that occurs when simultaneously smashing two X-ray photons into a single atom using a high-intensity laser. The event, highly improbable and requiring …
Momentum Exchange In The Electron Double-Slit Experiment, Herman Batelaan, Eric Jones, Wayne Cheng-Wei Huang, Roger Bach
Momentum Exchange In The Electron Double-Slit Experiment, Herman Batelaan, Eric Jones, Wayne Cheng-Wei Huang, Roger Bach
Herman Batelaan Publications
We provide support for the claim that momentum is conserved for individual events in the electron double slit experiment. The natural consequence is that a physical mechanism is responsible for this momentum exchange, but that even if the fundamental mechanism is known for electron crystal diffraction and the Kapitza–Dirac effect, it is unknown for electron diffraction from nano-fabricated double slits. Work towards a proposed explanation in terms of particle trajectories affected by a vacuum field is discussed. The contentious use of trajectories is discussed within the context of oil droplet analogues of double slit diffraction.

The synthesis of 2D H-bonded cocrystals from the room-temperature ferroelectric organics croconic acid (CA) and 3-hydroxyphenalenone (3-HPLN) is demonstrated through self-assembly on a substrate under ultrahigh vacuum. 2D cocrystal polymorphs of varied stoichiometry were identified with scanning tunneling microscopy, and one of the observed structural building blocks consists of two CA and two 3-HPLN molecules. Computational analysis with density functional theory confirmed that the experimental (CA)2(3-HPLN)2 tetramers are lower in energy than single-component structures due to the ability of the tetramers to pack efficiently in two dimensions, the promotion of favorable electrostatic interactions between tetramers, and the …

Systematic investigation of the scalability for tunneling electroresistance (TER) of integrated Co/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) has been performed from micron to deep submicron dimensions. Pulsed measurements of the transient currents confirm the ferroelectric switching behavior of the FTJs, while the hysteresis loops measured by means of piezoresponse force microscopy verify the scalability of these structures. Fully integrated functional FTJ devices with the size of 300×300 nm2 exhibiting a tunneling electroresistance (TER) effect of the order of 2.7×104% have been fabricated and tested. Measured current density of 75 A/cm2 for the ON state …

Before a GaAs photocathode can be activated to achieve a negative electron affinity condition, the GaAs crystal must be cleaned. This is most commonly done by ohmic, radiative, or electron bombardment heating. We report a new technique to monitor the temperature of heated GaAs photocathodes by observation with a camera. The method is robust and yields the same temperatures for different GaAs samples heated using different methods in different mounting configurations.

Force Field Development With Gomc A Fast New Monte Carlo Molecular Simulation Code, Jason Richard Mick
Wayne State University Dissertations
In this work GOMC (GPU Optimized Monte Carlo) a new fast, flexible, and free molecular Monte Carlo code for the simulation atomistic chemical systems is presented. The results of a large Lennard-Jonesium simulation in the Gibbs ensemble is presented. Force fields developed using the code are also presented. To fit the models a quantitative fitting process is outlined using a scoring function and heat maps. The presented n-6 force fields include force fields for noble gases and branched alkanes. These force fields are shown to be the most accurate LJ or n-6 force fields to date for these compounds, capable …

The structural transition at about 1000°C, from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic phase of LuFeO3, has been investigated in thin films of LuFeO3. Separation of the two structural phases of LuFeO3 occurs on a length scale of micrometer, as visualized in real space using X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. The results are consistent with X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy obtained from LuFeO3 thin films undergoing the irreversible structural transition from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic phase of LuFeO3, at elevated temperatures. The sharp phase boundaries between the structural phases are observed to …

Driven by the huge potential of engineering the molecular band offset with highly dipolar molecules for improving charge injection into organic electrics, the anchoring of various N-alkyl substituted quinonoid zwitterions of formula C6H2 (···NHR)2 (···O)2 (R = iPr, Cy, CH2CH(Et)CH2CH2CH2CH3,. . .) on gold surfaces is studied. The N–Au interactions result in an orthogonal arrangement of the zwitterions cores with respect to the surface, and stabilize adsorbed compact rows of molecules. IR spectroscopy is used as a straightforward diagnostic tool to validate the presence of …

We report the results of experimental and numerical-simulation studies of shielded radiography using narrowband MeVenergy X-rays from a compact all-laser-driven inverse-Compton-scattering X-ray light source. This recently developed Xray light source is based on a laser-wakefield accelerator with ultra-high-field gradient (GeV/cm). We demonstrate experimentally high-quality radiographic imaging (image contrast of 0.4 and signal-to-noise ratio of 2:1) of a target composed of 8-mm thick depleted uranium shielded by 80-mm thick steel, using a 6-MeV X-ray beam with a spread of 45% (FWHM) and 107 photons in a single shot. We report results of an experimental study of laser-wakefield acceleration of electrons, using a staged device based on a double-jet gas target that enables independent injection and acceleration stages. This novel scheme is shown to produce stable, quasi-monoenergetic, and tunable electron beams. We show that optimal accelerator performance is achieved by systematic variation of five critical parameters. For the injection stage, we show that the amount of trapped charge is controlled by the gas density, composition, and laser power. For the acceleration stage, the gas density and the length of the jet are found to determine the final electron energy. …
On The Ising Character Of The Quantum-Phase Transition In Lihof4, Ralph Skomski
On The Ising Character Of The Quantum-Phase Transition In Lihof4, Ralph Skomski
Ralph Skomski Publications
It is investigated how a transverse magnetic field affects the quantum-mechanical character of LiHoF4, a system generally considered as a textbook example for an Ising-like quantum-phase transition. In small magnetic fields, the low-temperature behavior of the ions is Ising-like, involving the nearly degenerate low-lying Jz = ± 8 doublet. However, as the transverse field increases, there is a substantial admixture of states having | Jz | < 8. Near the quantum-phase-transition field, the system is distinctively non-Ising like, and all Jz eigenstates yield ground-state contributions of comparable magnitude. A classical analog to this mechanism is the micromagnetic single point in magnets with uniaxial anisotropy. Since Ho3+ has …

Although enhanced conductivity of ferroelectric domain boundaries has been found in BiFeO3 and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films as well as hexagonal rare-earth manganite single crystals, the mechanism of the domain wall conductivity is still under debate. Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observe enhanced conductance at the electrically-neutral domain walls in semiconducting hexagonal ferroelectric TbMnO3 thin films where the structure and polarization direction are strongly constrained along the c-axis. This result indicates that domain wall conductivity in ferroelectric rare-earth manganites is not limited to charged domain walls. We show that the observed conductivity in the TbMnO3 films is …

With the increasing interest in deploying ferroelectric polymer in flexible electronics and electromechanics, high-throughput and low-cost fabrication of 3D ferroelectric polymer nanostructures on flexible substrates can be a significant basis for future research and applications. Here, we report that large arrays of ferroelectric polymer nanopillars can be prepared directly on soft, flexible substrates by using low-cost polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) soft-mold reverse nanoimprint lithography at 135 °C and at pressures as low as 3 bar. The nanopillar arrays were highly uniform over large areas of at least 200 × 200 μm and had good crystallinity with nearly optimum (110) orientation. Furthermore, the …

Textured arrays of ferroelectric microcrystals of diisopropylammonium bromide were grown from solution at room temperature onto silicon substrates and studied by means of x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and piezoresponse force microscopy. The needle-shaped crystals had dimensions of approximately 50 μm × 5 μm in the plane and were approximately 200 nm thick, where the dimensions and arrangement were influenced by growth conditions. The observations suggest an Ostwald ripening mechanism of the microcrystal growth. The crystals had the structure of the ferroelectric phase, where the polarization axis was in-plane and parallel to the long axis of …

Fully Differential Study Of Projectile Coherence Effects In Ionization Of Molecular Hydrogen And Atomic Helium, Thusitha Priyantha Arthanayaka
Doctoral Dissertations
"It has been well established, that projectile coherent properties are important for the study of atomic fragmentation processes. Recent studies of ionization of molecular hydrogen had demonstrated that measured double differential cross sections (DDCS) are very sensitive to the coherent length of the projectile. These measurements have been performed with varied coherence length of the projectiles by controlling the geometry of the collimating slits, which are placed before the target. Later, fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for a coherent and an incoherent projectile beam has been study for the same collision system and the results confirmed the important role of …

Up-Converted Emissions Of Er3+ Doped Gd2(Wo4)3 Phosphors, Grayson L. Wiggins
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this work, the up-conversion (UC) emissions of Er3+ in a gadolinium tungstate host was investigated to analyze the possible processes of up-conversion by 1500 nm and 980 nm excitation. Studies were conducted to see how the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition changed with varying current through the excitation source, varying excitation wavelength, and doping concentration. Power dependent studies revealed that under 1500 nm excitation the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition needed 3 photons, while 980 nm excitation could do the same transition with 2 photons. It was found that 1500 nm could produce more efficient red emission due to the 4I9/2 …

Characterizing Nanoparticle Size By Dynamic Light Scattering, M. Zaman, S. Ang, S. Singh
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) Technique was used to determine the size, shape and diffusion coefficient of rod-like nanoparticles. The intensity auto-correlation functions of light scattered by particles in a solution were measured and analyzed to obtain the relaxation rates for decay of intensity correlations. These decay rates are related to the diffusion coefficients pertaining to the motion of the particle. In the case of nanorods, there are two types of motion - translational and rotational. By disentangling the relaxation rates, corresponding to these two types of motion, the shape and size of nanoparticles were characterized. These experiments, though limited …

Despite enormous efforts and investments, the efficiency of InGaN-based green and yellow-green light emitters remains relatively low, and that limits progress in developing full color display, laser diodes, and bright light sources for general lighting. The low efficiency of light emitting devices in the green-to-yellow spectral range, also known as the “Green Gap”, is considered a global concern in the LED industry. The polar c-plane orientation of GaN, which is the mainstay in the LED industry, suffers from polarization-induced separation of electrons and hole wavefunctions (also known as the “quantum confined Stark effect”) and low indium incorporation efficiency that …

Electronic Structure And Stability Of Ligated Superatoms And Bimetallic Clusters, William H. Blades
Theses and Dissertations
Quantum confinement in small metal clusters leads to a bunching of states into electronic shells reminiscent of shells in atoms. The addition of ligands can tune the valence electron count and electron distribution in metal clusters. A combined experimental and theoretical study of the reactivity of methanol with AlnIm− clusters reveals that ligands can enhance the stability of clusters. In some cases the electronegative ligand may perturb the charge density of the metallic core generating active sites that can lead to the etching of the cluster. Also, an investigation is conducted to understand how the bonding …

New sets of parameters (“tunes”) for the underlying-event (UE) modelling of the PYTHIA8, PYTHIA6 and HERWIG++ MonteCarlo event generators are constructed using different parton distribution functions. Combined fits to CMS UE proton–proton (pp) data at √s = 7 TeV and to UE proton–antiproton (pp) data from the CDF experiment at lower √s, are used to study the UE models and constrain their parameters, providing thereby improved predictions for proton–proton collisions at 13 TeV. In addition, it is investigated whether the values of the parameters obtained from fits to UE observables are consistent with the values determined from fitting observables sensitive …
