The beam spin asymmetry of the exclusive pseudoscalar channel →ep→e′p′η was measured for the first time in the deep-inelastic regime (W > 2 GeV/c2 and Q2 > 1 GeV2 /c2) using a longitudinally polarized 5.78 GeV electron beam at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. The data were accumulated in 144 four-dimensional bins of Q2, xB, −t and ϕ over a wide kinematic range, where ϕ is the azimuthal angle between the lepton and hadron scattering planes, The measured azimuthal dependence with large amplitudes of the sin ϕ moments is …

A comparative analysis of two popular spectroscopy techniques is conducted in a coaxial cylindrical capacitively coupled discharge designed for the plasma processing of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. The density of the metastable and resonant levels in Ar is measured in both Ar and Ar/Cl2 discharges to properly characterize the unique discharge system and aid in the development of a cavity etching routine. The first method, deemed the “branching fraction method,” utilizes the sensitivity of photon reabsorption of radiative decay to measure the lower state (metastable and resonant) densities by taking ratios of spectral lines with a common upper …

Proliferation of topological defects like vortices and dislocations plays a key role in the physics of systems with long-range order, particularly, superconductivity and superfluidity in thin films, plasticity of solids, and melting of atomic monolayers. Topological defects are characterized by their topological charge reflecting fundamental symmetries and conservation laws of the system. Conservation of topological charge manifests itself in extreme stability of static topological defects because destruction of a single defect requires overcoming a huge energy barrier proportional to the system size. However, the stability of driven topological defects remains largely unexplored. Here we address this issue and investigate numerically …

We have experimentally investigated a catalysis effect in the resonant energy transfer between ultracold 85Rb Rydberg atoms. We studied the time dependence of the process, 34p + 34p → 34s + 35s, and observed an enhancement of 34s state population when 34d state atoms are added. We have also performed numerical model simulations, which are in qualitative agreement with experiment and indicate that the enhancement arises from a redistribution of p-state atoms due to the presence of the d-state atoms.

A new laser chirping prescription is derived by means of the phase-stationary method for an inci- dent Gaussian laser pulse in conjunction with a Li enard-Wiechert calculation of the scattered radia- tion flux and spectral brilliance. This particularly efficient laser chirp has been obtained using the electric field of the laser and for electrons and radiation on axis. The frequency modulation is some- what reduced with respect to that proposed in the previous literature, allowing the application of this procedure to lasers with larger values of the parameter a0. Numerical calculations have been performed using mildly focused and …
Fabrication Of An Apparatus For All-Optical Production Of Metastable Krypton, Lindsay M. Thornton
Fabrication Of An Apparatus For All-Optical Production Of Metastable Krypton, Lindsay M. Thornton
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) has made radiokrypton dating of polar ice and groundwater samples a possibility for scientists all over the world, allowing them to date samples further back in time and more accurately than other methods. However, this technique is hampered by the 36-hour cleaning process required for production of metastable-state krypton atoms via a radio-frequency driven plasma. Production of metastable krypton all-optically would dramatically increase the rate at which samples could be measured. Attempts to build an apparatus that could accomplish this have been done in the past but were lacking in aordability and practicality for widespread …

Triple-differential cross sections (TDCS) are presented for the electron and positron impact ionization of inert gas atoms in a range of geometries where a number of significant few body effects compete to define the shape of the TDCS. Using both positrons and electrons as projectiles has opened up the possibility of performing complementary studies which could effectively isolate competing interactions which cannot be separately detected in an experiment with a single projectile. A comparison is presented between theory and the recent experiments of [Gavin, deLucio, and DuBois, Phys. Rev. A95, 062703 (2017)] for e± and contrasted with the …

Room temperature NH3 absorption spectra recorded at the Kitt Peak National Solar Observatory in 1980 are analyzed. The spectra cover two regions in the visible: 15,200 - 15,700 cm-1 and 17,950 - 18,250 cm-1. These high overtone rotation-vibration spectra are analyzed using both combination differences and variational line lists. Two variational line lists were computed using the TROVE nuclear motion program: one is based on an ab initio potential energy surface (PES) while the other used a semi-empirical PES. Ab initio dipole moment surfaces are used in both cases. 95 energy levels with J = 1 …

Elastic light scattering from a macroscopic atomic sample existing in the Bose-Einstein condensate phase reveals a unique physical configuration of interacting light and matter waves. However, the joint coherent dynamics of the optical excitation induced by an incident photon is influenced by the presence of incoherent scattering channels. For a sample of sufficient length the excitation transports as a polariton wave and the propagation Green's function obeys the scattering equation which we derive. The polariton dynamics could be tracked in the outgoing channel of the scattered photon as we show via numerical solution of the scattering equation for one-dimensional geometry. …

On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach we study the dynamics of the afterglow of a dilute Gaussian atomic ensemble excited by pulsed radiation. Taking into account the vector nature of the electromagnetic field we analyze in detail the angular and polarization distribution of single-photon superradiance of such an ensemble. The dependence of the angular distribution of superradiance on the length of the pulse and its carrier frequency as well as on the size and the shape of the atomic clouds is studied. We show that there is substantial dependence of the superradiant emission on the polarization and the …

We study the transverse momentum distributions of single inclusive hadron production in e+e− annihilation processes. Although the only available experimental data are scarce and quite old, we find that the fundamental features of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution, historically addressed in Drell–Yan processes and, more recently, in Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes, are visible in e+e− annihilations as well. Interesting effects related to its non-perturbative regime can be observed.
We test two different parameterizations for the p⊥ dependence of the cross section: the usual Gaussian distribution and a power-law model. We find the latter …

Semi-inclusive charge-changing neutrino reactions on targets of heavy water are investigated with the goal of determining the relative contributions to the total cross section of deuterium and oxygen in kinematics chosen to emphasize the former. The study is undertaken for conditions where the typical neutrino beam energies are in the few GeV region, and hence relativistic modeling is essential. For this, the previous relativistic approach for the deuteron is employed, together with a spectral function approach for the case of oxygen. Upon optimizing the kinematics of the final-state particles assumed to be detected (typically a muon and a proton) it …

Investigation Of Multi-Photon Excitation In Argon With Applications In Hypersonic Flow Diagnostics, Jack L. Mills
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Non-intrusive flow diagnostics are essential for studying the physics of hypersonic flow wake regions. To advance the development of next generation hypersonic vehicles and to improve computational fluid dynamics techniques in the hypersonic regime, NASA needs a suitable non-intrusive diagnostic technique to measure velocity, density, and temperature. We will present our work on developing a seedless, non-intrusive diagnostic technique using excited state argon atoms, prepared via multi-photon excitation. In this dissertation, we report results on the first phase of this hypersonic wake measurement project. In particular, we have redesigned and characterized the performance of a high energy, nanosecond pulsed Ti:Sapphire …
Emergence Of Collective Light Scattering In Atomic 87Rb Samples, Kasie Jean Kemp
Emergence Of Collective Light Scattering In Atomic 87Rb Samples, Kasie Jean Kemp
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Over the past half century, atomic ensembles have been used to create sensors, clocks, and quantum information systems. As these devices become more compact, and as the number of atoms increases to improve the sensitivity for detection, the atomic samples are increasing in density and optical depth. As such, the spectroscopic properties of the atomic media are modified due to interactions among the particles in the ensemble. We report investigation of near-resonance light scattering from a cold atomic sample of 87Rb. Initially prepared in a magneto-optical trap, the atoms are loaded into a far-off-resonance optical dipole trap (FORT) in which …
Plasma Processing Of Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities, Janardan Upadhyay
Plasma Processing Of Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities, Janardan Upadhyay
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The development of plasma processing technology of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities not only provides a chemical free and less expensive processing method, but also opens up the possibility for controlled modification of the inner surfaces of the cavity for better superconducting properties. The research was focused on the transition of plasma etching from two dimensional flat surfaces to inner surfaces of three dimensional (3D) structures. The results could be applicable to a variety of inner surfaces of 3D structures other than SRF cavities. Understanding the Ar/Cl2 plasma etching mechanism is crucial for achieving the desired modification of Nb …
Cebaf Upgrade Bunch Length Measurements, Mahmoud Mohamad Ali Ahmad
Cebaf Upgrade Bunch Length Measurements, Mahmoud Mohamad Ali Ahmad
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Many accelerators use short electron bunches and measuring the bunch length is important for efficient operations. CEBAF needs a suitable bunch length because bunches that are too long will result in beam interruption to the halls due to excessive energy spread and beam loss. In this work, bunch length is measured by invasive and non-invasive techniques at different beam energies. Two new measurement techniques have been commissioned; a harmonic cavity showed good results compared to expectations from simulation, and a real time interferometer is commissioned and first checkouts were performed. Three other techniques were used for measurements and comparison purposes …

Uv Light-Induced Aggregation Of Titania Submicron Particles, Can Zhou, Yashar Bashirzadeh, Timothy A. Bernadowsky Jr., Xiaoyu Zhang
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, aggregation of TiO2 (rutile and anatase) submicron particles in deionized (DI) water under ultra-violet (UV) light irradiation was investigated. While no aggregation was observed in the dark, rutile and anatase submicron particles started aggregating upon application of UV light and ceased aggregation in about 2 and 8.4 h, respectively. It has been demonstrated that UV light directly mitigated the particle mobility of TiO2, resulting in a neutralization effect of the Zeta potential. It was also observed that rutile particles aggregated much faster than anatase particles under UV radiation, indicating that the Zeta potential of …

The computational efficiency and energy-to-solution of several applications using the GAMESS quantum chemistry suite of codes is evaluated for 32-bit and 64-bit ARM-based computers, and compared to an x86 machine. The x86 system completes all benchmark computations more quickly than either ARM system and is the best choice to minimize time to solution. The ARM64 and ARM32 computational performances are similar to each other for Hartree-Fock and density functional theory energy calculations. However, for memory-intensive second-order perturbation theory energy and gradient computations the lower ARM32 read/write memory bandwidth results in computation times as much as 86% longer than on the …
Photoassociative Spectroscopy Of Ultracold Argon And Krypton Confined In A Magneto Optical Trap, Maha Khaled Omar
Photoassociative Spectroscopy Of Ultracold Argon And Krypton Confined In A Magneto Optical Trap, Maha Khaled Omar
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Creating ultracold molecules has attracted considerable interest in the last decade. Once created, such molecules can be used for precision spectroscopy or to study chemical reactions at ultracold tem peratures. Several techniques have been developed to produce ultracold molecules; the most common is photoassociation where two ultracold atoms collide in the presence of light that induces a free-bound transition to an excited molecular state. Photoassociation can also be used to perform spectroscopy in order to map out the ro-vibrational levels of a molecular state. In this dissertaiotn, we report on our Photoasociative Spectroscopy (PAS) studies conducted separately in argon and …
Catalysis Of Stark-Tuned Interactions Between Ultracold Rydberg Atoms, Aye Lu Win
Catalysis Of Stark-Tuned Interactions Between Ultracold Rydberg Atoms, Aye Lu Win
Physics Theses & Dissertations
We present the study of the catalysis effect in the resonant energy transfer between ultracold 85Rb Rydberg atoms. We have investigated the energy transfer process of 34p + 34p → 34s + 35s, and observed Stark-tuned Forster resonances. When additional Rydberg atoms of 34d state are included in the interaction, an increase in the population of 34s states atoms is observed. Although the 34d state atoms do not directly participate in the resonant energy transfer that produces 34s state atoms, they add an additional interaction channel 34p + 34 …

Cu (In,Ga,Al)Se2 (CIGAS) thin films were studied as an alternative absorber layer material to Cu(InxGa1-x)Se2. CIGAS thin films with varying Al content were prepared by magnetron sputtering on Si(100) and soda-lime glass substrates at 350 °C, followed by postdeposition annealing at 520 °C for 5 h in vacuum. The film composition was measured by an electron probe microanalyzer while the elemental depth profiles were determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry. X-ray diffraction studies indicated that CIGAS films are single phase with chalcopyrite structure and that the (112) peak clearly shifts to higher 2θ …
Proton-Electrostatic Localization: Explaining The Bioenergetic Conundrum In Alkalophilic Bacteria, James Weifu Lee
Proton-Electrostatic Localization: Explaining The Bioenergetic Conundrum In Alkalophilic Bacteria, James Weifu Lee
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The decades-longstanding energetic conundrum of alkalophilic bacteria as to how they are able to synthesize ATP has now, for the first time, been clearly solved using the proton-electrostatics localization hypothesis. This is a major breakthrough advance in understanding proton-coupling bioenergetics over the Nobel-prize work of Peter Mitchell’s chemiosmotic theory. The widespread textbook Mitchellian proton motive force (pmf) equation has now been significantly revised. Use of the newly derived equation results in an overall pmf value (215~233 mV) that is more than 4 times larger than that (44.3 mV) calculated from the Mitchellian equation for the alkalophilic bacteria growing at pH …

A measurement of the electroproduction of photons off protons in the deeply inelastic regime was performed at Jefferson Lab using a nearly 6 GeV electron beam, a longitudinally polarized proton target, and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Target-spin asymmetries for e p → e'p'ɣ events, which arise from the interference of the deeply virtual Compton scattering and the Bethe-Heitler processes, were extracted over the widest kinematics in Q2, xB, t, and ɸ, for 166 four-dimensional bins. In the framework of generalized parton distributions, at leading twist the t dependence of these asymmetries provides insight into …

We present a new approach to measure population densities of Ar I metastable and resonant excited states in low temperature Ar plasmas at pressures higher than 1 Torr. This approach combines the time resolved laser induced fluorescence technique with the kinetic model of Ar. The kinetic model of Ar is based on calculating the population rates of metastable and resonant levels by including contributions from the processes that affect population densities of Ar I excited states. In particular, we included collisional quenching processes between atoms in the ground state and excited states, since we are investigating plasma at higher pressures. …

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, Ay, in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction ³He↑(e, e') on a ³He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero Ay can arise from the interference between the one-and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon. An experiment recently completed at Jefferson Lab yielded asymmetries with high statistical precision at Q2 = 0.13, 0.46, and 0.97 GeV2. These measurements demonstrate, for the first …

Using the recently published data from the BONuS(Barely Off-shell Nucleon Structure) experiment at Jefferson Lab, which utilized a spectator tagging technique to extract the inclusive electron-free neutron scattering cross section, we obtain the first direct observation of quark-hadron duality in the neutron F2 structure function. The data are used to reconstruct the lowest few (N = 2, 4, and 6) moments of F2 in the three prominent nucleon resonance regions, as well as the moments integrated over the entire resonance region. Comparison with moments computed from global parametrizations of parton distribution functions suggest that quark-hadron duality holds locally …

A new line list for rovibrational and rotational transitions within the NH X^3Σ{^-} ground state has been created, including line intensities in the form of Einstein A and f-values, for all possible bands up to v^'=6. The intensities are based on a new dipole moment function (DMF), which has been calculated using the internally contracted MRCI method with an aug-cc-pV6Z basis set. The programs RKR1, LEVEL and PGOPHER were used to calculate line positions and intensities using the most recent spectroscopic observations and the new DMF, and including the rotational dependence on the matrix elements. The Hund's case (b) matrix …
