Bounded Thunderstorm Tracking Of Lightning Events With Muon Detection, Skylar Wardlaw, Ainsley Helgerson, Maria Kaminska, Logan Velvet, Georgii Dubrov, Jackson Stewart, Aaron Jung, Nathaniel O’Hara, Amelia Koth, Nash Mcleod, Emaleth Wyckoff

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The muon is a high-energy particle that can be produced by cosmic rays and trigger upper-atmospheric particle cascades and energetic processes. It has been hypothesized that such cascades are at the onset of lightning. As such, muons serve as a valuable probe for investigating the underlying mechanisms of its initiation, whose full governing dynamics remain vastly unknown despite extensive research. Traditional approaches to lightning research involve simulations and observations of the discharge itself, but the role of high-energy particle interactions has yet to be fully constrained. The CosmicWatch Muon Detector design enables the detection of atmospheric muons through scintillation events, …

Non-Linear Atom-Laser Interactions Using Rubidium Pump-Probe Spectroscopy, Grace Neil Aug 2025

Non-Linear Atom-Laser Interactions Using Rubidium Pump-Probe Spectroscopy, Grace Neil

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

An experiment was performed to demonstrate the pump-probe spectroscopy of Rubidium (Rb) vapor, revealing the nonlinear atom-laser interactions in the 5S1/2 ↔ 5D5/2 transition in Rb that can be used to generate quantum entanglement between two laser beams. The setup included a tunable infrared diode laser, optical mirrors, photodiode-detectors, a beam-splitter, and a temperature- regulated rubidium gas chamber, all of which are controlled by the TeachSpin laser controller and monitor. The output from the laser-diode was split into a pump (90%) and a signal probe (10%), which intersected in counter-propagating directions inside the Rubidium chamber. The analysis shows that in …

Beamed: A Bench For Automated Measurements Of Electrical Discharges - A New Standard For Paschen Curves, Jared Nelson Dec 2024

Beamed: A Bench For Automated Measurements Of Electrical Discharges - A New Standard For Paschen Curves, Jared Nelson

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The initiation of electrical discharges, particularly glow discharges, plays a significant role in industry and environmental science, affecting systems such as electronics, power grids, and atmospheric phenomena. Despite extensive studies and applications of Paschen's law, current methodologies for experimental Paschen tests in direct current (DC) conditions lack standardized practices. This thesis presents the development and validation of a DC-based standard for electrical discharge initiation, using the BEnch for Automated Measurements of Electrical Discharges (BeAMED). BeAMED is designed to standardize the experimental process by automating electrical discharges' initiation and data acquisition. The autonomous nature of the system provides insights into the …

Upper Limit Of Electron Fluxes Observed In The Radiation Belts, Kun Zhang, Xinlin Li, Hong Zhao, Zheng Xiang, Leng Ying Khoo, Wenxun Zhang, Benjamin Hogan, Michael A. Temerin

Publications

Radiation belt electrons have a complicated relationship with geomagnetic activity. We select electron measurements from 7 years of DEMETER and 6 years of Van Allen Probes data during geomagnetic storms to conduct statistical analysis focusing on the correlation between electron flux and Dst index. We report, for the first time, an upper limit of electron fluxes observed by both satellites throughout the inner and outer belts across a wide energy range from ∼100s keV to multi-MeV. The upper flux limit is determined at different L's and energies, for example, 1.9 × 107/cm2-s-sr-MeV at 470 keV at L = 1.5 and …

Long‐Term Variations Of Quasi‐Trapped And Trapped Electrons In The Inner Radiation Belt Observed By Demeter And Sampex, Kun Zhang, Xinlin Li, Zheng Xiang, Leng Ying Khoo, Hong Zhao, Mark D. Looper, Michael A. Temerin, Jean-Andre Sauvaud

Publications

Electrons in the Earth's radiation belts can be categorized into three populations: precipitating, quasi‐trapped, and trapped. We use data from the Detection of Electro‐Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) and Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer satellite (SAMPEX) missions and from ground‐based neutron monitors (NM) and sunspot observations to investigate the long‐term variation of quasi‐trapped and trapped sub‐MeV electrons on different L shells in the inner belt. DEMETER and SAMPEX measurements span over 17 years and show that at L ≤ 1.14 the electron flux is anticorrelated with sunspot number, but proportional to the cosmic ray intensity represented by …

Coherent Captain Mills: The Search For Sterile Neutrinos, Ashley Elliott, Jeramy Gordon, Jonah Greenwood, Rachel Lake, Ryder Moreno, Emily Strawn, Kate Walker

Discovery Day - Prescott

The observation of neutrino oscillations confirms that the active neutrinos (νe, νμ, ντ) are comprised of three mass eigenstates with Δm2 values between 10-3 to 10-5 eV2 . However, a persistent phenomenon has been observed at LSND, MiniBooNE and other shortbaseline experiments (SBE) where Δm2 ~ 1eV2 and is not compatible with the current mixing between mass eigenstates. However, a 4th neutrino, a sterile neutrino (νs) that doesn’t participate in weak interactions could explain the phenomena observed as SBE’s. An experiment has been constructed at TA-53 at Los Alamos National Laboratory to investigate this large Δm2 ~ 1eV2 and determine …

Publications

Cosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (CRAND) has been recently confirmed as a source of energetic electrons at the inner edge of the inner belt by the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE)mission. Here we use observations from the Detection of Electro‐Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) mission, to investigate the CRAND contribution to inner belt electrons quantitatively over a broad energy range (~100–800 keV). Spectral fitting analysis supports the conclusion that CRAND is the most important electron source at the inner edge of the innerbelt. For the first time, we show that CRAND is the dominant source of >250‐keV …

Detailed Characteristics Of Radiation Belt Electrons Revealed By Csswe/Reptile Measurements: Geomagnetic Activity Response And Precipitation Observation, Kun Zhang, X. Li, Q. Schiller, D. Gerhardt, H. Zhao, R. Millan

Publications

Earth’s outer radiation belt electrons are highly dynamic. We study the detailed characteristics of relativistic electrons in the outer belt using measurements from the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE) mission, a low Earth orbit (LEO) CubeSat, which traverses the radiation belt four times in one orbit (~1.5 h) and has the advantage of measuring the dynamic activities of the electrons including their rapid precipitation. We focus on the measured electron response to geomagnetic activity for different energies to show that there are abundant sub-MeV electrons in the inner belt and slot region. These electrons are further enhanced during active …

Index Of Refraction From The Near-Ultraviolet To The Near-Infrared From A Single Crystal Microwave-Assisted Cvd Diamond, Giorgio Turri, Scott Webster, Ying Chen, Benjamin Wickham, Andrew Bennett, Michael Bass

Publications

The refractive index of a type IIa CVD-grown single-crystal diamond was measured by ellipsometry from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared region of the spectrum. As a consequence, a one term Sellmeier Equation with coefficents of B-1 = 4.658 and C-1 = 112.5 for the refractive index of diamond, for the wavelength range from 300 to 1650 nm, was derived that is only as accurate as the input data, +/- 0.002. The experimental results in this paper between 800 and 1650 nm are new, adding to the values available in the literature.

Microwave assisted chemical vapour deposited bulk diamond products have been used in a range of high power laser systems, due to low absorption across a range of wavelengths and exceptional thermal properties. However the application of polycrystalline products has frequently been limited to applications at longer wavelengths or thermal uses outside of the optical path due to the birefringence and scatter that are intrinsic properties of the polycrystalline materials. However, there are some solid state structures, including thin disc gain modules and amplifiers, that will gain significantly in terms of potential output powers if diamond could be used as a …

Molecular Dynamics Model Of Carbon Nanotubes In Epon 862/Detda Polymer, Guttormur Arnar Ingvason Dec 2013

Molecular Dynamics Model Of Carbon Nanotubes In Epon 862/Detda Polymer, Guttormur Arnar Ingvason

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The aerospace industry is interested in increasing the strength while reducing the weight of carbon fiber composite materials. Adding single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) to a polymer matrix can achieve that goal by improving delamination properties of the composite. Due to the complexity of polymer molecules and the curing process, few 3-D Molecular Dynamics simulations of a polymer-SWCNT composite have been run. Our model runs on the Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS), with a COMPASS (Condensed phase Optimized Molecular Potential for Atomistic Simulations Studies) potential to represent the interactions between the atoms of the polymer and the SWCNT. This …

Optical And Thermal Properties Of Spinel With Revised (Increased) Absorption At 4 To 5 Μm Wavelengths And Comparison With Sapphire, Daniel C. Harris, Giorgio Turri

Publications

Infrared absorption of high-quality, commercial, polycrystalline MgAl2O4 spinel is ∼40% greater in the range of 3.8 to 5.0 μm than the value predicted by the computer code OPTIMATR®, which has been used for window and dome design for more than 20 years. As a result, spinel and a-plane sapphire windows designed to support the same external pressure with the same probability of survival have approximately the same infrared absorptance in the range 3.8 to 5.0 μm. c-Plane sapphire has greater absorptance than spinel in the range 3.8 to 5.0 μm. Spinel has two weak absorption bands near 1.8 and 3.0 …

Spectral Engineering Of Optical Fiber Preforms Through Active Nanoparticle Doping, T. Lindstrom, E. Garber, D. Edmonson, T. Hawkins, Y. Chen, G. Turri, M. Bass, J. Ballato Nov 2012

Spectral Engineering Of Optical Fiber Preforms Through Active Nanoparticle Doping, T. Lindstrom, E. Garber, D. Edmonson, T. Hawkins, Y. Chen, G. Turri, M. Bass, J. Ballato

Publications

Europium doped alkaline earth fluoride [Eu:AEF2 (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba)] nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically incorporated into the core of modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD)-derived silica-based preforms by solution doping. The resulting preforms were examined to determine the impact of the nanoparticles chemistry on the spectroscopic behavior of the glass. The dominant existence of Eu3+ was demonstrated in all preforms, which is in contrast to conventional solution doped preforms employing dissolved europium salts where Eu2+ is primarily observed. Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements indicated that the nanoparticles composition is effective in controlling, at a local chemical and structural …

Optical Properties Of Type Iii-V Semiconductor Spherical Quantum Dot Heterostructures, Nathan Haluska Apr 2010

Optical Properties Of Type Iii-V Semiconductor Spherical Quantum Dot Heterostructures, Nathan Haluska

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

In recent years quantum dots (QD) have attracted increasing interest because of their wide variety of revolutionary applications. Such applications include high speed optical communication lasers, infrared photodetectors, and single photon emitters. One promising immediate application is QD solar cells. Proper analysis of the optical absorption characteristics in these solar cells requires a rigorous modeling of the electronic structure and optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures. Our emphasis will be on type III-V semiconductors. Such structures, have a great potential for increasing efficiencies, but they also possess highly degenerate and complex valence band structures. Therefore, we seek to develop a model …

Epitaxial single-crystal chemical-vapor-deposited diamond was obtained from Element Six Ltd. (Ascot, UK) and from Apollo Diamond (Boston, MA). Both companies provided 5 x 5 mm squares with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 mm. In addition, Element Six provided 10-mm-diameter disks with a thickness of 1.0 mm. The absorptance of all specimens at 1064 nm was measured by laser calorimetry, with good agreement between independent measurements at the University of Central Florida and at QinetiQ (Malvern, UK). Depolarization at 1064 nm and ultraviolet absorption properties are also reported.
