This paper presents a method for precise measurement of atomic and molecular nitrogen in an oxygen-nitrogen dc plasma. This is achieved by monitoring the intensities of the atomic nitrogen spectral line at 821.6 nm and the molecular nitrogen bandhead at 337.1 nm, relative to the atomic oxygen spectral line at 844.7 nm. Oxygen is one of the most frequently used gases for surface chemical treatment, including deposition and etching, therefore the ability to measure and control the process and chemical composition of the process is essential. To validate this oxygen actimometry method for N2-xO2 (where x varies from 0 to …

Epitaxial single-crystal chemical-vapor-deposited diamond was obtained from Element Six Ltd. (Ascot, UK) and from Apollo Diamond (Boston, MA). Both companies provided 5 x 5 mm squares with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 mm. In addition, Element Six provided 10-mm-diameter disks with a thickness of 1.0 mm. The absorptance of all specimens at 1064 nm was measured by laser calorimetry, with good agreement between independent measurements at the University of Central Florida and at QinetiQ (Malvern, UK). Depolarization at 1064 nm and ultraviolet absorption properties are also reported.
Investigation Of Ultracold Rubidium Atoms In A Pulsed Far Off Resonance Trap, Minarni Minarni
Investigation Of Ultracold Rubidium Atoms In A Pulsed Far Off Resonance Trap, Minarni Minarni
Physics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation reports on the design, construction, and investigation of a pulsed optical dipole force trap which uses laser light to confine ultracold rubidium (Rb) atoms. Because the laser frequency is detuned far from the atomic resonance frequency, the optical dipole force trap is also called a "far-off-resonance trap" (FORT). The use of pulsed laser light to create an optical trap may find application in expanding the number of atomic species which can be confined. The experiments reported here are principally aimed, however, at understanding the physics of pulsed FORT dynamics in anticipation of using the free electron laser (FEL) …

We demonstrate Rabi flopping at MHz rates between ground hyperfine states of neutral 87Rb atoms that are trapped in two micron sized optical traps. Using tightly focused laser beams we demonstrate high fidelity, site specific Rabi rotations with cross talk on neighboring sites separated by 8 μm at the level of 10−3. Ramsey spectroscopy is used to measure a dephasing time of 870 μs, which is ≈5000 times longer than the time for a π/2 pulse.
Mechanism For Spatial Organization In Quantum Dot Self-Assembly, Da Gao, Adam Kaczynski, John A. Jaszczak
Mechanism For Spatial Organization In Quantum Dot Self-Assembly, Da Gao, Adam Kaczynski, John A. Jaszczak
Department of Physics Publications
Inspired by experimental observations of spatially ordered growth hillocks on the (001) surfaces of natural graphite crystals, a mechanism for spatial organization in quantum dotself-assembly is proposed. The regular arrangement of steps from a screw dislocation-generated growth spiral provides the overall template for such ordering. An ordered array of quantum dots may be formed or nucleated from impurities driven to the step corners by diffusion and by their interactions with the spiral’s steps and kinks. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of a solid-on-solid model supports the feasibility of such a mechanism.

Einstein’S Impact On Optics At The Frontier, Donald Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
The seminal contributions made by Einstein a century ago have enabled a new frontier area of science, called high-field science. This research involves the physics of the interactions of matter with electromagnetic fields at its highest levels ever achieved in the laboratory. Besides being of fundamental importance to physics research, the discoveries being made in this area are also leading to a new generation of compact and ultrashort-duration particle accelerators and X-ray light sources, with applications ranging from nuclear fusion to cancer therapy.
Experimental Investigation Of A Rubidium-Argon Dual Species Magneto-Optical Trap, Hauke Christian Busch
Experimental Investigation Of A Rubidium-Argon Dual Species Magneto-Optical Trap, Hauke Christian Busch
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The first simultaneous cooling and confinement of two different atomic species from opposite sides of the periodic table in a dual magneto optical trap (DMOT) has been accomplished. The alkali-metal 85Rb and the noble gas 40Ar* have been simultaneously confined, characterized, and interspecies interaction parameters have been measured. The DMOT confined 1.2 × 106 85Rb atoms at a density of 1 × 1010/cm3 and 1.4 × 106 40Ar* atoms with a density of 1.2 × 1010/cm3. A collisional loss rate coefficient for Rb-Ar* has been determined to …

Electrical breakdown in homogeneous liquid water for an ∼ 100 ns voltage pulse is analyzed. It is shown that electron-impact ionization is not likely to be important and could only be operative for low-density situations or possibly under optical excitation. Simulation results also indicate that field ionization of liquid water can lead to a liquid breakdown provided the ionization energies were very low in the order of 2.3eV. Under such conditions, an electric-field collapse at the anode and plasma propagation toward the cathode, with minimal physical charge transport, is predicted. However, the low, unphysical ionization energies necessary for matching …
Monte Carlo Simulations Of Surface Phase Transitions In A Modulated Layered Structure, Da Gao, John A. Jaszczak
Monte Carlo Simulations Of Surface Phase Transitions In A Modulated Layered Structure, Da Gao, John A. Jaszczak
Department of Physics Publications
A solid-on-solid model of a layered crystal, which has five layers per repeat period in the direction normal to the surface and with only nearest-neighbor interactions, is studied using Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the relationship between crystal structure and the corresponding surface phases. Equilibrium properties, such as the surface specific heat, interface width, and autocorrelation times, are studied as a function of temperature and system size. Results indicate three distinct surface phases exist in this model: a low-temperature flat phase, an intermediate-temperature disordered but flat phase, and a high-temperature rough phase. We suggest the possibility of introducing several intermediate …

Ion Contribution To The Astrophysical Important 447.15, 587.56 And 667.82 Nm He I Spectral Lines Broadening, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Stevan Djenize
Articles
Characteristics of the astrophysical important Stark broadened 447.15 nm, 587.56 nm and 667.82 nm spectral line profiles have been measured at electron densities between 0.3 10 and 8.2 10 m and electron temperatures between 8000 and 33 000 K in plasmas created in five various discharge conditions using a linear, low-pressure, pulsed arc as an optically thin plasma source operated in a helium-nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture. On the basis of the observed asymmetry of the line profiles we have obtained their ion broadening parameters ( A) caused by influence of the ion microfield on the line broadening mechanism and also …
Acceleration Element For Femtosecond Electron Pulse Compression, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali
Acceleration Element For Femtosecond Electron Pulse Compression, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
An acceleration element is proposed for compressing the electron pulse duration in a femtosecond photoelectron gun. The element is a compact metal cavity with curved-shaped walls. An external voltage is applied to the cavity where a special electric field forms in such a way that the slow electrons in the electron pulse front are accelerated more than the fast electrons, and consequently the electron pulse duration will be compressed. The distribution of the electric field inside the acceleration cavity is analyzed for the geometry of the cavity. The electron dynamics in this acceleration cavity is also investigated numerically. Numerical results …

Low Saturation Intensities In Two-Photon Ultracold Collisions, C. I. Sukenik, D. Hoffman, S. Bali, T. Walker
Physics Faculty Publications
We have observed violet photon emission resulting from energy-pooling collisions between ultracold Rb atoms illuminated by two colors of near-resonant infrared laser light. We have used this emission as a probe of doubly excited state ultracold collision dynamics. We have observed the lowest saturation intensity for light-induced ultracold collisions seen to date which we identify as due to depletion of incoming ground state flux. We have also varied the detuning of the lasers which allows us to clearly identify the effect of spontaneous emission and optical shielding.
Roughening And Preroughening Of Diamond-Cubic {111} Surfaces, Donald L. Woodraska, John A. Jaszczak
Roughening And Preroughening Of Diamond-Cubic {111} Surfaces, Donald L. Woodraska, John A. Jaszczak
Department of Physics Publications
A solid-on-solid model for {111} surfaces of diamond-cubic materials that correctly takes into account the diamond-cubic crystal structure has been developed for Monte Carlo simulation. In addition to a roughening transition at temperature TR, a distinct preroughening transition at TPR≈0.43TR is indicated by divergences in the surface specific heat and order-parameter susceptibility. Preroughening appears to arise naturally in our nearest-neighbor bond model from the entropic freedom available in the nontrivial crystal structure. Preroughening is shown to dramatically lower the nucleation barrier for growth and etching at low driving forces.

Measurement Of The Casimir-Polder Force, C. I. Sukenik, M. G. Boshier, S. Cho, V. Sandoghdar, E. A. Hinds
Physics Faculty Publications
The authors have studied the deflection of ground-state sodium atoms passing through a micron-sized parallel-plate cavity by measuring the intensity of a sodium atomic beam transmitted through the cavity as a function of cavity plate separation. This experiment provides clear evidence for the existence of the Casimir-Polder force, which is due to modification of the ground-state Lamb shift in the confined space of a cavity. The results confirm the magnitude of the force and the distance dependence predicted by quantum electrodynamics.

Rotationally Resolved Laser Spectroscopy Of The 3s2Σ+ ← 2p2ii Transition In 6li20ne And 7li20ne Van Der Waals Molecules, Chang Jae Lee
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The rotationally resolved absorption spectrum of the 6Li20Ne and 7Li20Ne 3s2Σ+ ← 2p2 II transition has been observed. For each isotope, thirteen vibrational transitions from four vibrational levels (v"=0, 1, 2, and 3) of the lower 2p2 II to six (v’=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) of the upper 3s*Σ+ electronic state have been rotationally analyzed. Adiabatic potentials and dissociation energies for both states have been obtained through an inverse perturbation analysis. For the 2p2II state, a well depth of 212(5) cm-1 and an …
A Laser Interferometric Study Of Electric Field Effects On Methane-Oxygen Flame Plasmas, Mark D. Prairie
A Laser Interferometric Study Of Electric Field Effects On Methane-Oxygen Flame Plasmas, Mark D. Prairie
Masters Theses
A laser interferometer is developed to study the refractive index field, aerodynamic structure, and three dimensional temperature profile of a methane-oxygen flame system under the influence of D.C. electric fields. A combined graphical-numerical method is used to transform the observed interference patterns into radial temperature distributions. The results indicate that the electric field exerts a marked influence on the flame stability, geometry, and charged particle flow. Experimental evidence shows that these effects are most apparent under fuel rich conditions. It is suggested an electric field may change the concentration gradients of reacting species, leading to an altered course of fuel …
Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter
Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter
Dissertations and Theses
Often electron micrographs exhibit a repeating structure. Sometimes this repeating structure satisfies the definition of a crystal in that it has a three dimensional repeating structure. If the unit cell structure of this repeating structure can be determined it can be used to help categorize different sections of a particular sample. In some cases, the use of optical diffraction analysis of electron micrographs with repeating structure is a method of determining the unit cell structure.
Samples of β-Lactoglobulin were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope using both the crystalline material and carbon replicas of the crystal surface. Because the …
Electron Optical Study Of A Secondary Electron Multiplier, Chang Min Shen
Electron Optical Study Of A Secondary Electron Multiplier, Chang Min Shen
Dissertations and Theses
Electron orbital theory was applied to the design of the geometrical structure of an electron multiplier for an image intensifier. A special structure satisfying production requirements was studied. Electron optical calculations consisted of determining the potential distribution and tracing the electron trajectories. Liebmann's procedure was used to solve Laplace's equation with constant potentials on the multiplier electrodes as boundary conditions. The trajectories were determined by solving the equation of motion in an electrostatic field using a Runge-Kutta procedure. The initial conditions for the trajectories were the initial energies, initial positions, and the initial directions of the secondary electrons. The plotted …
