Charged Higgs Production: Higher-Order Corrections, Nikolaos Kidonakis

I present a calculation of higher-order radiative corrections to charged Higgs production in association with a top quark via the process bg -> tH-. Results for charged Higgs production at the LHC are presented, including the dependence of the cross section on the charged Higgs mass, the top quark mass, the factorization and renormalization scales, and tan beta. I show that the theoretical prediction for the cross section is significantly enhanced and is greatly stabilized when the higher-order corrections are included.

A new phenomenon sensitive only to next-door-neighbor atoms in isolated molecules is demonstrated using angle-resolved photoemission of site-selective core electrons. Evidence for this interatomic core-to-core electron interaction is observable only by measuring nondipolar angular distributions of photoelectrons. In essence, the phenomenon acts as a very fine atomic-scale sensor of nearest-neighbor elemental identity.

The Xe 5s nondipole photoelectron parameter γ is obtained experimentally and theoretically from threshold to ∼200  eV photon energy. Significant nondipole effects are seen even in the threshold region of this valence shell photoionization. In addition, contrary to previous understanding, clear evidence of interchannel coupling among quadrupole photoionization channels is found.

We have measured the forward-backward asymmetry of photoelectron angular distributions produced in the vacuum ultraviolet photoionization of helium. This asymmetry, a consequence of the breakdown of the dipole approximation, measures the real part of the ratio of the quadrupole and dipole matrix elements. In the autoionization region, the strong energy dependence of the asymmetry permits an experimental separation of the ratio of those magnitudes from their phase difference. We experimentally determined the Fano parameters of the 2p21D2 quadrupole resonance, and report improved values of the width Γ and line profile parameter q from those previously available …

The first indication of nondipole effects in the azimuthal dependence of photoelectron angular distributions emitted from fixed-in-space molecules is demonstrated in N2. Comparison of the results with angular distributions observed for randomly oriented molecules and theoretical derivations for the nondipole correction first order in photon momentum suggests that higher orders will be needed to describe distributions measured in the molecular frame.

We have observed photoexcitation of the dipole-forbidden 1s21S0→2p21D2 resonance in helium by measuring the nondipolar forward-backward asymmetry of photoelectron angular distributions in the 2ℓ2ℓ autoionizing region. By exploiting the electric dipole-quadrupole interference in the excitation of both the 2s2p1P1 and 2p21D2 levels, we have observed the quadrupole resonance in photoabsorption and extracted its Fano line shape parameters and the relative phase of the 1sEp and 1sEd continua. We find the quadrupole line profile index q2 to be markedly different from theoretical expectations.

The electron pulse broadening and energy spread, caused by space charge effects, in a photoelectron gun are studied analytically using a fluid model. The model is applicable in both the photocathode-to-mesh region and the postanode electron drift region. It is found that space charge effects in the photocathode-to-mesh region are generally unimportant even for subpicosecond pulses. However, because of the long drift distance, electron pulse broadening due to space charge effects in the drift region is usually significant and could be much larger than the initial electron pulse duration for a subpicosecond electron pulse. An acceleration element is proposed for compressing the electron pulse duration in a femtosecond photoelectron gun. The element is a compact metal cavity with curved-shaped walls. An external voltage is applied to the cavity where a special electric field forms in such a way that the slow electrons in the electron pulse front are accelerated more than the fast electrons, and consequently the electron pulse duration will be compressed. The distribution of the electric field inside the acceleration cavity is analyzed for the geometry of the cavity. The electron dynamics in this acceleration cavity is also investigated numerically. Measurements of angular distributions of K-shell electrons photoejected from molecular nitrogen are reported which reveal large deviations at relatively low photon energies ( ħω≤500eV) from emission patterns anticipated from the dipole approximation to interactions between radiation and matter. A concomitant theoretical analysis incorporating the effects of electromagnetic retardation attributes the observed large nondipole behaviors in N2 to bond-length-dependent terms in the E1⊗(E2,M1) photoelectron emission amplitudes which are indicative of a potentially universal nondipole behavior in molecular photoionization.

Two decades ago, it was predicted [Y. S. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 46, 1326 (1981)] that relativistic effects should alter the dynamics of the photoionization process in the vicinity of Cooper minima. The present experimental and theoretical study of the angular distributions of Xe 4d3/2 and 4d5/2 photoelectrons demonstrates this effect for the first time. The results clearly imply that relativistic effects are likely to be important for intermediate- Z atoms at most energies.

The development of a spallation neutron source with a mercury target may lead to the production of rare radionuclides. The dose coefficients for many of these radionuclides have not yet been published. A collaboration of universities and national labs has taken on the task of calculating dose coefficients for the rare radionuclides using the software package: DCAL. The working group developed a procedure for calculating dose coefficients and a quality assurance (QA) program to verify the calculations completed. A large body of data for pion-induced neutral pion continuum spectra spanning outgoing energies near 180 MeV shows no dip there that might be ascribed to internal strong absorption processes involving the formation of Δ’s. This is the same observation previously made for the charged pion continuum spectra. Calculations in an intranuclear cascade model or a cascade exciton model with free-space parameters predict such a dip for both neutral and charged pions. We explore several medium modifications to the interactions of pions with internal nucleons that are able to reproduce the data for nuclei from 7Li through Bi.

The contribution of the {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}) reaction to the production of {sup 19}Ne which is the crucial isotope for the breakout from the hot CNO cycle into the rp process, has been investigated in experiments with {sup 18}F beams. Measurements of the cross sections for the {sup 18}F(p,{alpha}){sup 15}O and the {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}){sup 19}Ne reactions indicate that the contribution from the (p,{gamma}) route to the formation of {sup 19}Ne is small.

Cross sections for positronium formation by capture from the negative hydrogen ion are given. Orthogonalization corrections to the Coulomb (first-order) Born approximation (CBA) differential and total cross sections are calculated using approximate H- wave functions of both Löwdin [Phys. Rev. 90, 123 (1953)] and Chandrasekhar [Astrophys. J. 100, 176 (1944)]. The present calculation of the CBA cross sections using the post interaction for Löwdin’s wave function (LCBAPS) disagrees with the calculation of Choudhury, Mukherjee, and Sural (CMS) [Phys. Rev. A 33, 2358 (1986)], whereas our results using the prior interaction agree. Thus, where CMS found an order …

The Fock-Tani Hamiltonian is found for scattering processes involving up to two ions and two electrons. Possible bound-state species include one or two electrons bound on an ion fixed at the origin, and a one-electron projectile atom. A diagrammatic technique is illustrated that simplifies the algebra of the transformation. Coulomb- or plane-wave states are automatically generated by the same asymptotic Hamiltonian for all arrangement channels.

This Safety Evaluation Report for the application filed by the University of Utah (UU) for a renewal of operating license R-126 to continue to operate a training and research reactor facility has been prepared by the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The facility is owned and operated by the University of Utah and is located on its campus in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. The staff concludes that this training reactor facility can continue to be operated by UU without endangering the health and safety of the public.

In this thesis a theoretical study is made of excitation of hydrogenic atom by charged particles such as protons or electrons. The approximation to the cross section for an inelastic scattering process is obtained under the following radically simplifying assumptions. The projectile is represented in its initial and final state by plane waves. All distortions are neglected whether they originate in an inelastic process or an elastic deflections of the charged particle by the nucleus. The perturbation of the atomic orbits between which the projectile induces transitions is neglected. Nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions are used for the electronic states. In …
