Cryogenic Test Of A 750 Mhz Superconducting Rf Dipole Crabbing Cavity, A. Castilla, Hyekyoung Park, J. R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

A superconducting rf dipole cavity has been designed to address the challenges of a high repetition rate (750 MHz), high current for both electron/ion species (0.5/3 A per bunch), and large crossing angle (50 mrad) at the interaction points (IPs) crabbing system for the Medium Energy Electron-Ion Collider (MEIC) proposed by Jefferson Lab. The cavity prototype built at Niowave, Inc. has been tested at the Jefferson Lab facilities. In this work we present a detailed analysis of the prototype cavity performance at 4 K and 2 K, corroborating the absence of hard multipacting barriers that could limit the desired transverse …

Fabrication And Measurements Of 500 Mhz Superconducting Double Spoke Cavity, Hyekyoung Park, C. S. Hopper, J. R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

The 500 MHz double spoke cavity has been designed for a high velocity application such as a compact electron accelerator at Center for Accelerator Science at Old Dominion University and is being built at Jefferson Lab. The geometry specific to the double spoke cavity requires a variety of tooling and fixtures. Also a number of joints are expected to make it difficult to maintain the geometric deviation from the design minimal. This paper will report the fabrication technique, resulting tolerance from the design, and comparison between the measurements and simulations.

Electric Field Standing Wave Effects In Ft-Ir Transflection Spectra Of Biological Tissue Sections: Simulated Models Of Experimental Variability, Tomasz P. Wrobel, Barbara Wajnchold, Hugh Byrne, Malgorzata Baranska Jan 2013

Electric Field Standing Wave Effects In Ft-Ir Transflection Spectra Of Biological Tissue Sections: Simulated Models Of Experimental Variability, Tomasz P. Wrobel, Barbara Wajnchold, Hugh Byrne, Malgorzata Baranska

Articles

The so-called electric field standing wave effect (EFSW) has recently been demonstrated to significantly distort FT-IR spectra acquired in a transflection mode, both experimentally and in simulated models, bringing into question the appropriateness of the technique for sample characterization, particularly in the field of spectroscopy of biological materials. The predicted effects are most notable in the regime where the sample thickness is comparable to the source wavelength. In this work, the model is extended to sample thicknesses more representative of biological tissue sections and to include typical experimental factors which are demonstrated to reduce the predicted effects. These include integration …

Gain Of A Single Gas Electron Multiplier, Mythra Varun Nemallapudi Aug 2012

Gain Of A Single Gas Electron Multiplier, Mythra Varun Nemallapudi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a gaseous detector used in particle detection and is known for its high rate capability. Ever since its invention in 1997, GEM was applied in many areas and recently has been proposed to be installed in the CMS high η regions for upgrade at LHC, CERN. A complete understanding of the working and gain behaviour does not exist. GEM gain is influenced by charging up and this has been variedly interpreted in literature lacking consensus. I have attempted in this work through simulations and measurements to achieve a better understanding of single GEM gain and …

Point-Spread Function Assessment Of Sg-Dbr Based Swept Source For Oct Imaging, David Wilkey Gilbert Jun 2012

Point-Spread Function Assessment Of Sg-Dbr Based Swept Source For Oct Imaging, David Wilkey Gilbert

Master's Theses

Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) is a medical imaging technique that requires high repetition rate, widely-tunable coherent laser sources. Sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) lasers are proven in telecom applications and are expected to fulfill the requirements for SS-OCT at a significantly lower cost than alternative solutions.

Constructed entirely on a semiconductor substrate, SG-DBR lasers require four synchronized waveforms to modulate the output wavelength and intensity. Because of this unique tuning mechanism, there are a number of systematic and noise sources that can affect the quality of the OCT point-spread function (PSF). Based on these noise sources, software …

Simulation Chamber For Space Environment Survivability Testing, Lisa Montierth, Robert H. Johnson, John R. Dennison, James Dyer

All Physics Faculty Presentations

A vacuum chamber was designed and built that simulates the space environment making possible the testing of material modification due to exposure of solar radiation. Critical environmental components required include an ultra high vacuum (10-9 Torr), a UV/VIS/NIR solar spectrum source, an electron gun and charge plasma, temperature extremes, and long exposure duration. To simulate the solar spectrum, a solar simulator was attached to the chamber with a range of 200nm to 2000nm. The exposure time can be accelerated by scaling the solar intensity up to four suns. A Krypton lamp imitates the 120 nm ultraviolet hydrogen Lymann alpha emission …

Simulation And Phases Of Macroscopic Particles In Vortex Flow, Heath Eric Rice Jan 2012

Simulation And Phases Of Macroscopic Particles In Vortex Flow, Heath Eric Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Granular materials are an interesting class of media in that they exhibit many disparate characteristics depending on conditions. The same set of particles may behave like a solid, liquid, gas, something in-between, or something completely unique depending on the conditions. Practically speaking, granular materials are used in many aspects of manufacturing, therefore any new information gleaned about them may help refine these techniques. For example, learning of a possible instability may help avoid it in practical application, saving machinery, money, and even personnel. To that end, we intend to simulate a granular medium under tornado-like vortex airflow by varying particle …

The Inexorable Resistance Of Inertia Determines The Initial Regime Of Drop Coalescence, Joseph Paulsen, Justin C. Burton, Sidney R. Nagel, Santosh Appathurai, Michael T. Harris, Osman A. Basaran Jan 2012

The Inexorable Resistance Of Inertia Determines The Initial Regime Of Drop Coalescence, Joseph Paulsen, Justin C. Burton, Sidney R. Nagel, Santosh Appathurai, Michael T. Harris, Osman A. Basaran

Physics - All Scholarship

Drop coalescence is central to diverse processes involving dispersions of drops in industrial, engineering, and scientific realms. During coalescence, two drops first touch and then merge as the liquid neck connecting them grows from initially microscopic scales to a size comparable to the drop diameters. The curvature of the interface is infinite at the point where the drops first make contact, and the flows that ensue as the two drops coalesce are intimately coupled to this singularity in the dynamics. Conventionally, this process has been thought to have just two dynamical regimes: a viscous and an inertial regime with a …

Turbulence And Bias-Induced Flows In Simple Magnetized Toroidal Plasmas, B. Li, B. N. Rogers, P. Ricci, K. W. Gentle May 2011

Turbulence And Bias-Induced Flows In Simple Magnetized Toroidal Plasmas, B. Li, B. N. Rogers, P. Ricci, K. W. Gentle

Dartmouth Scholarship

Turbulence and bias-induced flows in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas are explored with global three- dimensional fluid simulations, focusing on the parameters of the Helimak experiment. The simulations show that plasma turbulence and transport in the regime of interest are dominated by the ideal interchange instability. The application of a bias voltage alters the structure of the plasma potential, resulting in the equilibrium sheared flows. These bias-induced vertical flows located in the gradient region appear to reduce the radial extent of turbulent structures, and thereby lower the radial plasma transport on the low field side.

Broadband Pumping Effects On The Diode Pumped Alkali Laser, Paul Nathaniel Jones Mar 2011

Broadband Pumping Effects On The Diode Pumped Alkali Laser, Paul Nathaniel Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to gain greater insight on the mechanics of The Diode Pumped Alkali Laser through analytic modeling techniques. This work is an extension to a previous model developed by Dr. Gordon Hager, and focuses on the addition of pump-beam bandwidth. Specifically, it seeks to determine the effect that broadband pumping has on laser performance. The model incorporates all the fundamental parameters within the laser system, including alkali concentrations, collision partner concentrations, pump bandwidth, length and temperature of gain medium, transmission, and reflectivity. Baseline operating conditions set Rubidium (Rb) concentrations ranging from 1012 - 1014 atoms/cm3 …

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz Jan 2011

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Simulation of x-ray optical systems is an important tool for optics design for known applications, and optic development for potential applications. Polycapillary optics are thin glass cylinders containing hundreds of thousands of hollow channels that transmit x rays using total external reflection. These optics have been developed for many applications, from beam filtering to x-ray collimating or focusing. A Monte Carlo based ray-tracing simulation was developed to model a wide range of polycapillary optic geometries. The simulation uses a vector-based approach to model all photons and optical geometries in three dimensions. Simulation verification was performed for a wide range of …

Multipacting Analysis Of The Superconducting Parallel-Bar Cavity, Subashini De Silva, Jean R. Delayen Jan 2011

Multipacting Analysis Of The Superconducting Parallel-Bar Cavity, Subashini De Silva, Jean R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

The superconducting parallel-bar cavity [1] is a deflecting/crabbing cavity with attractive properties, compared to other conventional designs, that is being considered for a number of applications. Multipacting can be a limiting factor to the performance of in any superconducting structure. In the parallel-bar cavity the main contribution to the deflection is due to the transverse deflecting voltage, between the parallel bars, making the design potentially prone to multipacting. This paper presents the results of analytical calculations and numerical simulations of multipacting in the parallel-bar cavity with resonant voltage, impact energies and corresponding particle trajectories.

Long-Lived Time-Dependent Remnants During Cosmological Symmetry Breaking: From Inflation To The Electroweak Scale, Marcelo Gleiser, Noah Graham, Nikitas Stamatopoulos Aug 2010

Long-Lived Time-Dependent Remnants During Cosmological Symmetry Breaking: From Inflation To The Electroweak Scale, Marcelo Gleiser, Noah Graham, Nikitas Stamatopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

Through a detailed numerical investigation in three spatial dimensions, we demonstrate that long-lived time-dependent field configurations emerge dynamically during symmetry breaking in an expanding de Sitter spacetime. We investigate two situations: a single scalar field with a double-well potential and an SU(2) non-Abelian Higgs model. For the single scalar, we show that large-amplitude oscillon configurations emerge spontaneously and persist to contribute about 1.2% of the energy density of the Universe. We also show that for a range of parameters, oscillon lifetimes are enhanced by the expansion and that this effect is a result of parametric resonance. For the SU(2) case, …

Simulating The Fticr-Ms Signal Of A Decaying Beryllium-7 Ion Plasma In A 2d Electrostatic Pic Code, Michael Takeshi Nakata Jan 2010

Simulating The Fticr-Ms Signal Of A Decaying Beryllium-7 Ion Plasma In A 2d Electrostatic Pic Code, Michael Takeshi Nakata

Theses and Dissertations

Beryllium-7 (Be-7) only decays by electron capture into lithium-7 (Li-7) with a half life of 53 days. We study the effect of ionization on this decay rate. We do so by trapping a Be-7 ion plasma in a cylindrical Malmberg-Penning trap and measuring Be-7 and Li-7 concentrations as functions of time by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). We have simulated these signals in a 2-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The two spectrum peaks merge at high ion densities whereas at low ion densities they can be resolved. The merged peak shifts linearly according to the relative …

Hydrodynamic Relaxation Of An Electron Plasma To A Near-Maximum Entropy State, D. J. Rodgers, S. Servidio, W. H. Matthaeus, D. C. Montgomery, T. B. Mitchell, T. Aziz Jun 2009

Hydrodynamic Relaxation Of An Electron Plasma To A Near-Maximum Entropy State, D. J. Rodgers, S. Servidio, W. H. Matthaeus, D. C. Montgomery, T. B. Mitchell, T. Aziz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Dynamical relaxation of a pure electron plasma in a Malmberg-Penning trap is studied, comparing experiments, numerical simulations and statistical theories of weakly dissipative two-dimensional (2D) turbulence. Simulations confirm that the dynamics are approximated well by a 2D hydrodynamic model. Statistical analysis favors a theoretical picture of relaxation to a near-maximum entropy state with constrained energy, circulation, and angular momentum. This provides evidence that 2D electron fluid relaxation in a turbulent regime is governed by principles of maximum entropy.

Measurement And Simulation Of Laser-Induced Fluorescence From Nonequilibrium Ultracold Neutral Plasmas, A. Denning, Scott D. Bergeson, F. Robicheaux Jan 2009

Measurement And Simulation Of Laser-Induced Fluorescence From Nonequilibrium Ultracold Neutral Plasmas, A. Denning, Scott D. Bergeson, F. Robicheaux

Faculty Publications

We report measurements and simulations of laser-induced fluorescence in ultracold neutral plasmas. We focus on the earliest times, when the plasma equilibrium is evolving and before the plasma expands. In the simulation, the ions interact via the Yukawa potential in a small cell with wrapped boundary conditions. We solve the optical Bloch equation for each ion in the simulation as a function of time. Both the simulation and experiment show the initial increase in ion fluorescence, disorder-induced heating, and coherent oscillation of the rms ion velocity. Detailed modeling of the fluorescence signal makes it possible to use fluorescence spectroscopy to …

Analytical Characterization Of Oscillon Energy And Lifetime, Marcelo Gleiser, David Sicilia Jul 2008

Analytical Characterization Of Oscillon Energy And Lifetime, Marcelo Gleiser, David Sicilia

Dartmouth Scholarship

We develop an analytical procedure to compute all relevant physical properties of scalar field oscillons in models with quartic polynomial potentials: energy, radius, frequency, core amplitude, and lifetime. We compare our predictions to numerical simulations of models with symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials in three spatial dimensions, obtaining excellent agreement. We also explain why oscillons have not been seen to decay in two spatial dimensions.

Selectron Mass Reconstruction And The Resolution Of The Linear Collider Detector, Sharon J. Gerbode, Heath Holguin, Troy Lau, Paul Mooser, Adam Pearlstein, Joe Rose, Bruce Schumm

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We have used ISAJET and the JAS LCD fast simulation to explore the precision of Snowmass Point SPS1a selectron mass reconstruction for the Silicon Detector concept. Simulating collisions at E_cm = 1 TeV, we have found that most of the information constraining the selectron mass is carried in the forward (|cos(theta)| > 0.8) region. We have also found that, for a beam energy spread of 1% (conventional RF design), detector resolution limitations compromise the selectron mass reconstruction only in the forward region. However, for a beam energy spread of less than 0.2% (superconducting RF design), the detector resolution compromises the selectron …

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Hole Transport And Terahertz Amplification In Multilayer Delta Doped Semiconductor Structures, Maxim Dolguikh Jan 2005

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Hole Transport And Terahertz Amplification In Multilayer Delta Doped Semiconductor Structures, Maxim Dolguikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Monte Carlo method for the simulation of hole dynamics in degenerate valence subbands of cubic semiconductors is developed. All possible intra- and inter-subband scattering rates are theoretically calculated for Ge, Si, and GaAs. A far-infrared laser concept based on intersubband transitions of holes in p-type periodically delta-doped semiconductor films is studied using numerical Monte-Carlo simulation of hot hole dynamics. The considered device consists of monocrystalline pure Ge layers periodically interleaved with delta-doped layers and operates with vertical or in-plane hole transport in the presence of a perpendicular in-plane magnetic field. Inversion population on intersubband transitions arises due to light hole …

Initial Electron Beam Polarization Measurement In E-\Gamma Collisions, Gökhan Ünel Jan 2003

Initial Electron Beam Polarization Measurement In E-\Gamma Collisions, Gökhan Ünel

Turkish Journal of Physics

The future high energy e e colliders, together with the complementary \gamma \gamma option, will offer possibilities for both discovery and precision physics. The uncertainty on the initial beam polarizations contributes to the systematic errors in each case. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain the precise beam polarizations by independent measurements. The e \gamma \rightarrow \nu W process in the e \gamma mode can be used to experimentally determine the polarization of the initial e beam. This note addresses the feasibility of making such a measurement with a relative statistical error of one percent. Generator and detector level MC tools …

Electronic Structure Of Superconducting Mgb₂ And Related Binary And Ternary Borides, Nadezhda I. Medvedeva, Alexander L. Ivanovskii, Julia E. Medvedeva, Arthur J. Freeman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

First-principles full potential linear muffin-tin orbital-generalized gradient approximation electronic structure calculations of the new medium-Tc superconductor (MTSC) MgB2 and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the existence of Px,y-band holes at the γ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-Tc superconductivity for BeB2, AlB2, ScB2, and YB2. The simulation of a number of MgB2-based ternary systems using a supercell approach demonstrates that (i) the electron doping of MgB2 (i.e., MgB2-yXy with X=Be, …

Wide ranges of the ion-to-neutral density ratio ni / nn and electrostatic field E were considered in order to investigate the change of ion behavior with respect to the solar cycle and altitude. For low altitudes and/or solar minimum (ni / …

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo For Thin Film Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, B. Alder, F. J. Alexander Jan 1994

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo For Thin Film Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, B. Alder, F. J. Alexander

Faculty Publications

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) scheme is used to study the gas flow under a read/write head positioned nanometers above a moving disk drive platter (the slider bearing problem). In most cases, impressive agreement is found between the particle-based simulation and numerical solutions of the continuum hydrodynamic Reynolds equation which has been corrected for slip. However, at very high platter speeds the gas is far from equilibrium, and the load capacity for the slider bearing cannot be accurately computed from the hydrodynamic pressure.
