Scaling Theory Of 3d Magnetic Reconnection X-Line Spreading, Milton Arencibia Jan 2022

Scaling Theory Of 3d Magnetic Reconnection X-Line Spreading, Milton Arencibia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Magnetic reconnection is fundamental process in plasmas that converts magnetic energy into kinetic and thermal energy via a change in magnetic topology. Magnetic reconnection is known to mediate eruptive solar flares, geomagnetic substorms that create the Northern lights, heating and particle acceleration in controlled fusion devices, and is thought to be an important process in numerous settings in high-energy astrophysics. Classical models of reconnection are two-dimensional (2D), but naturally occurring reconnection is three-dimensional (3D), and a manifestation of the 3D nature is that the x-line where the magnetic field topology changes has a finite extent in the direction normal to …

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Rf-Based Passive Wireless Sensors Composed Of Refractory Semiconducting Ceramics For High Temperature Applications, Kavin Sivaneri Varadharajan Idhaiam Jan 2022

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Rf-Based Passive Wireless Sensors Composed Of Refractory Semiconducting Ceramics For High Temperature Applications, Kavin Sivaneri Varadharajan Idhaiam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Real-time health monitoring of high temperature systems (>500oC) in harsh environments is necessary to prevent catastrophic events caused by structural failures, varying pressure, and chemical reactions. Conventional solid-state temperature sensors such as resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and thermocouples are restricted by their operating environments, sensor dimensions and often require external power sources for their operation. The current work presents the research and development of RF-based passive wireless sensing technology targeting high temperatures and harsh environmental conditions. Passive wireless devices are generally classified as near-field and far-field devices based on the interrogation distance. Near-field sensors are placed at …

Magnetic Charge Ordering Of Pinwheel Artificial Spin Ice In In-Plane External Magnetic Fields And Its Application For Tunable Vortex Pinning, Timothy Draher Jan 2022

Magnetic Charge Ordering Of Pinwheel Artificial Spin Ice In In-Plane External Magnetic Fields And Its Application For Tunable Vortex Pinning, Timothy Draher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Pinwheel artificial spin ice (ASI) systems fabricated using permalloy nanobars offer tunable control of superconducting vortices in an ASI-superconductor hybrid. Vortex pinningis achieved by tuning the ordering of the ASI’s magnetic charge distribution via an external field to create an optimal potential energy landscape to which superconducting vortex motion can be impeded or pinned. Magnetic charge ordering in a pinwheel ASI is visualized using MuMax3 micromagnetic simulations to aid in characterizing the correlation of charge ordering amongst the spin ice system with the application of the external field. Vortex pinning is characterized in a sample of pinwheel spin ice patterned …

Precise Phase Space Control For Future Linear Colliders, Tianzhe Xu Jan 2022

Precise Phase Space Control For Future Linear Colliders, Tianzhe Xu

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The design of future linear colliders is highly constrained by their cost and footprint. Phase space partitioning offers an attractive path towards cost and complexity reduction through precise tailoring of particle beam distributions. In this dissertation, we discuss a phase space manipulation technique for generating flat electron beams---a type of beam distribution of particular interest to linear colliders. We report the experimental generation of flat beams with transverse-emittance ratio up to 200 at Argonne Wakefield Accelerator facility. We further expand the technique by combining it with transverse-to-longitudinal emittance exchange. We present the conceptual design of an electron injector capable of …

Third-Integer Resonant Extraction Regulation System For Mu2e, Aakaash Narayanan Jan 2022

Third-Integer Resonant Extraction Regulation System For Mu2e, Aakaash Narayanan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A third-integer resonant slow extraction system is being developed for Fermilab's Delivery Ring to deliver protons to the upcoming Mu2e experiment. The timescale of the extraction (or spill) duration is 43 milliseconds, which is extremely short and unprecedented. Additionally, the experiment's strict and challenging requirements on the quality of the spill at this time scale has led to the development of a new Spill Regulation System (SRS) design. The SRS primarily consists of three components - slow regulation, fast regulation, and harmonic content suppressor. Contributions to the first two components of the SRS, i.e., Slow Regulation and Fast Regulation subsystems, …

Search For Charged Higgs Bosons In The Tau+Nu Final State With 139 Inverse Fb Of Pp Collision Data At Sqrt(S)=13 Tev With The Atlas Experiment, Elliot Wesley Parrish

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation uses 139 inverse fb of pp collision data collected at a center of mass energy of sqrt(s)=13 TeV by the ATLAS detector to search for charged Higgs bosons decaying to a tau lepton and a neutrino in association with a top quark. Two subchannels are defined based on the leptonic decay (tau+lepton) or hadronic decay (tau+jets) of the associated top quark. Parameterized Neural Networks are investigated and optimized to improve signal separation from background in both subchannels across a wide charged Higgs boson mass range of 80 GeV to 3000 GeV. Expected exclusion limits at 95% confidence on …

Modeling Of Sub-Terahertz Wakefield Structures For Electron-Bunch Acceleration, Cassandra Phillips Jan 2022

Modeling Of Sub-Terahertz Wakefield Structures For Electron-Bunch Acceleration, Cassandra Phillips

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Dielectric-lined waveguides have been extensively studied to potentially support high-gradient acceleration in beam-driven dielectric wakefield acceleration (DWFA) and for beam manipulations. In this thesis, we investigate the wakefield generated by a relativistic bunch passing through a dielectric waveguide with different transverse sections. I specifically consider the case of a structure consisting of two dielectric slabs, along with rectangular and square structures. Numerical simulations performed with the fine-difference time-domain WarpX program reveal interesting features of the transverse wake and possible experiments at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) are proposed.

Studies Of Vector Boson Scattering In The Semileptonic Zv Channel With The Cms Detector At √S = 13 Tev, Ramanpreet Singh Jan 2022

Studies Of Vector Boson Scattering In The Semileptonic Zv Channel With The Cms Detector At √S = 13 Tev, Ramanpreet Singh

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation reports on the search for the vector boson scattering (VBS) in semileptonicZV channel, where the Z boson decays to a pair of leptons (electrons or muons), and the other vector boson V (either W or Z) decays hadronically to a pair of jets, in association of two large pseudorapidity jets i.e. ZVjj → l+l−jjjj, l = e or μ. The search used 137 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with center-of-mass energy (√s) of 13 TeV from 2016 to 2018. VBS is a key process …

Compact Wakefield Accelerator With Advanced Beam Manipulations, Wei Hou Tan Jan 2022

Compact Wakefield Accelerator With Advanced Beam Manipulations, Wei Hou Tan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Beam-driven structure wakefield acceleration is an advanced accelerator concept proposedto develop accelerators with much smaller footprints than conventional state-of-the-art accelerators at a similar energy scale. The concept relies on the generation of electromagnetics wakefields through the interaction of a highly charged “drive” beam with a structure, such as a waveguide, to accelerate a following bright “witness” beam with produced wakefields. This dissertation discusses three aspects critical to structure-wakefield accelerators: the manipulation of the drive beam for efficient wakefield acceleration, the development of a photoinjector capable of producing bright witness electron beams, and the investigation of beam instability in a wakefield …

Polarized electrons from GaAs photocathodes have been key to some of the highest-impact results of the Jefferson Lab science program over the past 30 years. During this time, various studies have given insight into improving the operational lifetime of these photocathodes in DC high-voltage photo-guns while using lasers with spatial Gaussian profiles of typically 0.5 mm to 1 mm FWHM, cathode voltages of 100 kV to 130 kV, and a wide range of beam currents up to multiple mA. In this contribution, we show recent experimental data from a 100 kV to 180 kV setup and describe our progress at …

Multifunctional Resonant Wavefront-Shaping Meta-Optics Based On Multilayer And Multi-Perturbation Nonlocal Metasurfaces, Stephanie C. Malek, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù, Nanfang Yu Jan 2022

Multifunctional Resonant Wavefront-Shaping Meta-Optics Based On Multilayer And Multi-Perturbation Nonlocal Metasurfaces, Stephanie C. Malek, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù, Nanfang Yu

Advanced Science Research Center

Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant frequencies unaffected. Our devices attain this functionality by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum encoded with a spatially varying geometric …

Planar Chiral Metasurfaces With Maximal And Tunable Chiroptical Response Driven By Bound States In The Continuum, Tan Shi, Zi-Lan Deng, Guangzhou Geng, Xianzhi Zeng, Yixuan Zeng, Guangwei Hu, Adam Overvig, Junjie Li, Cheng-Wei Qiu, Andrea Alù, Yuri S. Kivshar, Xiangping Li

Advanced Science Research Center

Optical metasurfaces with high quality factors (Q-factors) of chiral resonances can boost substantially light-matter interaction for various applications of chiral response in ultrathin, active, and nonlinear metadevices. However, current approaches lack the flexibility to enhance and tune the chirality and Q-factor simultaneously. Here, we suggest a design of chiral metasurface supporting bound state in the continuum (BIC) and demonstrate experimentally chiroptical responses with ultra-high Q-factors and near-perfect circular dichroism (CD = 0.93) at optical frequencies. We employ the symmetry-reduced metaatoms with high birefringence supporting winding elliptical eigenstate polarizations with opposite helicity. It provides a convenient way for achieving the maximal …

Photonics Of Time-Varying Media, Emanuele Galiffi, Romain Tirole, Shixiong Yin, Huanan Li, Stefano Vezzoli, Paloma A. Huidobro, Mário G. Silveirinha, Riccardo Sapienza, Andrea Alù, J. B. Pendry

Advanced Science Research Center

Time-varying media have recently emerged as a new paradigm for wave manipulation, due to the synergy between the discovery of highly nonlinear materials, such as epsilon-near-zero materials, and the quest for wave applications, such as magnet-free nonreciprocity, multimode light shaping, and ultrafast switching. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion of the recent progress achieved with photonic metamaterials whose properties stem from their modulation in time. We review the basic concepts underpinning temporal switching and its relation with spatial scattering and deploy the resulting insight to review photonic time-crystals and their emergent research avenues, such as topological and non-Hermitian …

Reciprocity Of Thermal Diffusion In Time-Modulated Systems, Jiaxin Li, Ying Li, Pei-Chao Cao, Minghong Qi, Xu Zheng, Yu-Gui Peng, Baowen Li, Xue-Feng Zhu, Andrea Alù, Hongsheng Chen, Cheng-Wei Qiu Jan 2022

Reciprocity Of Thermal Diffusion In Time-Modulated Systems, Jiaxin Li, Ying Li, Pei-Chao Cao, Minghong Qi, Xu Zheng, Yu-Gui Peng, Baowen Li, Xue-Feng Zhu, Andrea Alù, Hongsheng Chen, Cheng-Wei Qiu

Advanced Science Research Center

The reciprocity principle governs the symmetry in transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, as well as the diffusion of heat between two points in space, with important consequences for thermal management and energy harvesting. There has been significant recent interest in materials with time-modulated properties, which have been shown to efficiently break reciprocity for light, sound, and even charge diffusion. However, time modulation may not be a plausible approach to break thermal reciprocity, in contrast to the usual perception. We establish a theoretical framework to accurately describe the behavior of diffusive processes under time modulation, and prove that thermal reciprocity …

Eftekhar, Christian Teichrib, Sanchit Deshmukh, Mostafa A. El-Sayed, Eric Pop, Matthias Wuttig, Andrea Alù, Wenshan Cai, Ali Adibi

Advanced Science Research Center

Phase-change materials (PCMs) offer a compelling platform for active metaoptics, owing to their large index contrast and fast yet stable phase transition attributes. Despite recent advances in phase-change metasurfaces, a fully integrable solution that combines pronounced tuning measures, i.e., efficiency, dynamic range, speed, and power consumption, is still elusive. Here, we demonstrate an in situ electrically driven tunable metasurface by harnessing the full potential of a PCM alloy, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), to realize non-volatile, reversible, multilevel, fast, and remarkable optical modulation in the near-infrared spectral range. Such a reprogrammable platform presents a record eleven-fold change in …

Observation Of Localized Magnetic Plasmon Skyrmions, Zi-Lan Deng, Tan Shi, Alex Krasnok, Xiangping Li, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Optical skyrmions have recently been constructed by tailoring vectorial near-field distributions through the interference of multiple surface plasmon polaritons, offering promising features for advanced information processing, transport and storage. Here, we provide experimental demonstration of electromagnetic skyrmions based on magnetic localized spoof plasmons (LSP) showing large topological robustness against continuous deformations, without stringent external interference conditions. By directly measuring the spatial profile of all three vectorial magnetic fields, we reveal multiple -twist target skyrmion configurations mapped to multi-resonant near-equidistant LSP eigenmodes. The real-space skyrmion topology is robust against deformations of the meta-structure, demonstrating flexible skyrmionic textures for arbitrary shapes. The …

Coherent Full Polarization Control Based On Bound States In The Continuum, Ming Kang, Ziying Zhang, Tong Wu, Xueqian Zhang, Quan Xu, Alex Krasnok, Jiaguang Han, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are resonant modes of open structures that do not suffer damping, despite being compatible with radiation in terms of their momentum. They have been raising significant attention for their intriguing topological features, and their opportunities in photonics to enhance light-matter interactions. In parallel, the coherent excitation of optical devices through the tailored interference of multiple beams has been explored as a way to enhance the degree of real-time control over their response. Here, we leverage the combination of these phenomena, and exploit the topological features of BICs in the presence of multiple input beams …

Fast Encirclement Of An Exceptional Point For Highly Efficient And Compact Chiral Mode Converters, Xiaoqian Shu, Aodong Li, Guangwei Hu, Jian Wang, Andrea Alù, Lin Chen Jan 2022

Fast Encirclement Of An Exceptional Point For Highly Efficient And Compact Chiral Mode Converters, Xiaoqian Shu, Aodong Li, Guangwei Hu, Jian Wang, Andrea Alù, Lin Chen

Advanced Science Research Center

Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies at which two or more eigenvalues and eigenstates of a physical system coalesce. Dynamically encircling EPs by varying the parameters of a non- Hermitian system enables chiral mode switching, that is, the final state of the system upon a closed loop in parameter space depends on the encircling handedness. In conventional schemes, the parametric evolution during the encircling process has to be sufficiently slow to ensure adiabaticity. Here, we show that fast parametric evolution along the parameter space boundary of the system Hamiltonian can relax this constraint. The proposed scheme enables highly efficient transmission and …

Moiré-Driven Topological Transitions And Extremeanisotropy In Elastic Metasurfaces, Simon Yves, Matheus Inguaggiato Nora Nora Rosa, Mohit Gupta, Massimo Ruzzene, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

The twist angle between a pair of stacked 2D materials has been recently shown to control remarkable phenomena, including the emergence of flat-band superconductivity in twisted graphene bilayers, of higher-order topological phases in twisted moiré superlattices, and of topological polaritons in twisted hyperbolic metasurfaces. These discoveries, at the foundations of the emergent field of twistronics, have so far been mostly limited to explorations in atomically thin condensed matter and photonic systems, with limitations on the degree of control over geometry and twist angle, and inherent challenges in the fabrication of carefully engineered stacked multilayers. Here, this work extends twistronics to …

Radio-Transparent Dipole Antenna Based On A Metasurface Cloak, Jason Soric, Younes Ra'di, Diego Farfan, Andrea Alù Jan 2022

Radio-Transparent Dipole Antenna Based On A Metasurface Cloak, Jason Soric, Younes Ra'di, Diego Farfan, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Antenna technology is at the basis of ubiquitous wireless communication systems and sensors. Radiation is typically sustained by conduction currents flowing around resonant metallic objects that are optimized to enhance efficiency and bandwidth. However, resonant conductors are prone to large scattering of impinging waves, leading to challenges in crowded antenna environments due to blockage and distortion. Metasurface cloaks have been explored in the quest of addressing this challenge by reducing antenna scattering. However, metasurface-based designs have so far shown limited performance in terms of bandwidth, footprint and overall scattering reduction. Here we introduce a different route towards radiotransparent antennas, in …

Stability Bounds On Superluminal Propagation In Active Structures, Robert Duggan, Hady Moussa, Younes Ra'di, Dimitrios L. Sounas, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Active materials have been explored in recent years to demonstrate superluminal group velocities over relatively broad bandwidths, implying a potential path towards bold claims such as information transport beyond the speed of light, as well as antennas and metamaterial cloaks operating over very broad bandwidths. However, causality requires that no portion of an impinging pulse can pass its precursor, implying a fundamental trade-off between bandwidth, velocity and propagation distance. Here, we clarify the general nature of superluminal propagation in active structures and derive a bound on these quantities fundamentally rooted into stability considerations. By applying filter theory, we show that …

Application Of Image Processing Programs In Color Analysis Of Wood Photodegradation, Gabriel Joseph D. Plata, Ramon M. Delos Santos

Physics Faculty Publications

In general, polymer photodegradation is an important aspect of polymer science that is of great interest to chemistry, materials science, biology, and physics students who engage in this field of research. Wood consists of three main polymers, which makes it a good candidate for such photodegradation studies. Aside from structural changes based on chemical analysis, color change assessment can also be employed to check any extent of degradation on wood without the need for sophisticated analytical equipment. This study presents the application of two image processing programs in color analysis of wood photodegradation: ImageJ and Colormath library, which are Java-based …

The Kepler Problem On Complex And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Michael R. Astwood Jan 2022

The Kepler Problem On Complex And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Michael R. Astwood

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The motion of objects in the sky has captured the attention of scientists and mathematicians since classical times. The problem of determining their motion has been dubbed the Kepler problem, and has since been generalized into an abstract problem of dynamical systems. In particular, the question of whether a classical system produces closed and bounded orbits is of importance even to modern mathematical physics, since these systems can often be analysed by hand. The aforementioned question was originally studied by Bertrand in the context of celestial mechanics, and is therefore referred to as the Bertrand problem. We investigate the qualitative …

Verification Of Electron Beam Production For Radiation Dosimetry Experimentation, Henri J. Lemieux Jan 2022

Verification Of Electron Beam Production For Radiation Dosimetry Experimentation, Henri J. Lemieux

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Radiation is a natural phenomenon in which energy is emitted in the form of waves or particles through a given medium. Radiation dosimetry is the method of analyzing and assessing this deposited emitted energy. How this emitted energy effects a given object when deposited has been a topic of interest in the fields of science and medicine. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for the verification of electrons in air and determining their delivered dose rate. Using a linear accelerator which had its polarity flipped from producing positive ions to producing electrons, work to verify the production of …

Carotenoids are naturally abundant fat-soluble pigmented compounds, with dietary, antioxidant and vision protection advantages. The dietary carotenoids, Beta Carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, complexed with in bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous solution, were explored using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate and quantify their spectral signatures. UV visible absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the linearity of responses over the concentration range employed (0.05-1mg/ml) and, of the 4 source wavelengths, 785nm, 660nm, 532nm, 473nm, 532nm was chosen to provide the optimal response. After preprocessing to remove water and BSA contributions, and correct for self-absorption, a partial least squares model with R2 …

Searching For Anomalous Extensive Air Showers Using The Pierre Auger Observatory Fluorescence Detector, Andrew Puyleart Jan 2022

Searching For Anomalous Extensive Air Showers Using The Pierre Auger Observatory Fluorescence Detector, Andrew Puyleart

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Anomalous extensive air showers have yet to be detected by cosmic ray observatories. Fluorescence detectors provide a way to view the air showers created by cosmic rays with primary energies reaching up to hundreds of EeV . The resulting air showers produced by these highly energetic collisions can contain features that deviate from average air showers. Detection of these anomalous events may provide information into unknown regions of particle physics, and place constraints on cross-sectional interaction lengths of protons. In this dissertation, I propose measurements of extensive air shower profiles that are used in a machine learning pipeline to distinguish …

Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao Jan 2022

Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We have developed a lattice Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on the diffusion-limited aggregation model that accounts for the effect of the physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) on lithium dendrite growth. Our simulations show that the size asymmetry between the cation and anion, the dielectric constant, and the volume fraction of ILs are critical factors to significantly suppress the dendrite growth, primarily due to substantial changes in electric-field screening. Specifically, the volume fraction of ILs has the optimal value for dendrite suppression. The present simulation method indicates potential challenges for the model extension to macroscopic systems. Therefore, we also …

Ring Bose–Einstein Condensate Atomtronic Rotation Sensor, Oluwatobi I. Adeniji Jan 2022

Ring Bose–Einstein Condensate Atomtronic Rotation Sensor, Oluwatobi I. Adeniji

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

We propose a design for an atomtronic rotation sensor consisting of an array of Bose– Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a double–target–array potential. The purpose of the sensor is to measure the rotation speed, ΩR, of the sensor’s rest frame with respect to the “fixed stars.” The atomtronic system consists of an ultracold gas of sodium atoms compressed, using laser light, into a thin horizontal sheet and subjected to a double–target– array potential within the horizontal plane. A “target” BEC consists of a disk–shaped condensate surrounded by a concentric ring–shaped condensate. A “double–target” BEC is two adjacent target …
