Topical Review: Greybody Factors And Quasinormal Modes For Black Holes Invarious Theories - Fingerprints Of Invisibles, İzzet Sakalli, Sara Kanzi

Turkish Journal of Physics

We give a pedagogical introduction to black holes (BHs) greybody factors (GFs) and quasinormal modes (QNMs) and share the recent developments on those subjects. To this end, we present some particular analytical and approximation techniques for the computations of the GFs and QNMs. We first review the gravitational GFs and show how they are analytically calculated for static and spherically symmetric higher dimensional BHs, consisting the charged BHs and existence of cosmological constant (i.e. de Sitter (dS)/anti-de Sitter (AdS)AdS BHs). The computations performed involve both the low-energy (having real and small frequencies) and the asymptotic (having extremely high frequency of …

Momentum Of Light In Complex Media, Yuri Obukhov Jan 2022

Momentum Of Light In Complex Media, Yuri Obukhov

Turkish Journal of Physics

An important issue in phenomenological macroscopic electrodynamics of moving media is the definition of the energy and momentum of the electromagnetic field in matter. Rather surprisingly, this topic has demonstrated a remarkable longevity, and the problem of the electromagnetic energy and momentum in matter remained open, despite numerous theoretical and experimental investigations. We overview the definition of the momentum of light in matter and demonstrate that, for the correct understanding of the problem, one needs to carefully distinguish situations when the material medium is modeled either as a background for light or as a dynamical part of the total system. …

Investigating The Potential Of Laser-Written One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Inside Silicon, Onur Tokel Jan 2022

Investigating The Potential Of Laser-Written One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Inside Silicon, Onur Tokel

Turkish Journal of Physics

The field of silicon photonics is based on introducing and exploiting advanced optical functionality. Current efforts in the field are based on conventional micro/nanofabrication methods, leading to optical functionality over wafer surfaces. A complementary and emerging field is introducing analogous optics directly within the wafer using lasers. Here we investigate the theoretical feasibility of a subclass of such optics, photonic crystals. Our efforts will guide future experimental efforts towards in-chip spectral control.

Extinction And Growth On An Inhomogeneous Seascape, Tung Tran, Mehran Kardar Jan 2022

Extinction And Growth On An Inhomogeneous Seascape, Tung Tran, Mehran Kardar

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effects of noise and nonuniformity on dynamics of populations are relevant and timely subjects of investigation. One form of variation is the time dependence of the reproduction rate (fitness), referred to as ?seascape? noise; another is time-independent intrinsic dependencies of fitness on location (in the parlance of statistical physics, corresponding to annealed and quenched disorder, respectively). The former was studied recently and demonstrated to lead to novel universality classes for extinction and growth. To reduce the gap between this theoretical model and reality, we develop a new formalism for seascape noise where growth and migration parameters are inhomogeneous. In …

Self-Consistent Markovian Embedding Of Generalized Langevin Equations With Configuration-Dependent Mass And A Nonlinear Friction Kernel, Cihan Ayaz, Lucas Tepper, Roland R. Netz Jan 2022

Self-Consistent Markovian Embedding Of Generalized Langevin Equations With Configuration-Dependent Mass And A Nonlinear Friction Kernel, Cihan Ayaz, Lucas Tepper, Roland R. Netz

Turkish Journal of Physics

We consider a generalized Langevin equation (GLE) in which the deterministic force, the mass and the friction kernel are configuration-dependent, i.e. general nonlinear functions of the reaction coordinate. We introduce a projection operator that allows for a self-consistent Markovian embedding of such GLEs. Self-consistency means that trajectories generated by the Markovian embedding are described by a GLE with the same configuration-dependent deterministic force, mass and friction kernel. Using the projection operator, we derive a closed-form relation between the parameters of the Markovian embedding Langevin equations and the parameters of the GLE. This is accomplished by applying the projection operator formalism …

Critical Dynamics In Biological Boolean Networks Follows From Symmetric Response To Input Genes, Hamza Çoban, Alkan Kabakçioğlu Jan 2022

Critical Dynamics In Biological Boolean Networks Follows From Symmetric Response To Input Genes, Hamza Çoban, Alkan Kabakçioğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

A recent observation on an extensive collection of biological gene regulatory networks suggests that the regulatory dynamics is tuned to remain close to the order-chaos boundary in the Lyapunov sense [1]. We here investigate, from a mathematical perspective, the structural/functional constraints which give rise to such accumulation around criticality in these systems. While the role of canalizing functions in this respect is well established, we find that critical sensitivity to small input variations also follows from an over-abundance of symmetrical inputs, i.e. regulatory genes invoking identical or complementary responses on their common target. A random network ensemble constructed to have …

Quantum Kinetic Equation For Fermionic Fluids And Chiral Kinetic Theory, Ömer Faruk Dayi Jan 2022

Quantum Kinetic Equation For Fermionic Fluids And Chiral Kinetic Theory, Ömer Faruk Dayi

Turkish Journal of Physics

We first review how one can establish the quantum kinetic equation for fluids of spin-1/2 particles. Then we present the construction of the semiclassical relativistic chiral kinetic equation of the fluid in the presence of the external electromagnetic fields. We derive the resulting nonrelativistic chiral kinetic theory. We calculated the particle number current density and showed that chiral effects are correctly generated. Moreover, it satisfies the anomalous continuity equation.

Dissolution Of Alumina In Cryolite Melts: A Conceptual Dft Study, Ali̇met Sema Özen, Zehra Akdeni̇z

Turkish Journal of Physics

Interactions between alumina and cryolite clusters were investigated using chemical reactivity descriptors based on Conceptual DFT such as global hardness, $\eta$, global softness, $S$, fukui functions, $f$, and local softness, $s$. Hard and Soft Acids and Bases (HSAB) Principle was applied for identifying clusters that are most likely to interact with alumina, Al$_2$O$_3$. Local reactivity descriptors were employed to predict the most probable regions of interaction within the cluster.

3d Self-Assemble Formation Of Molybdenum Disulfide (Mos2)-Doped Polyacrylamide (Paam) Composite Hydrogels, Sümeyye Durmaz, Ekrem Yildiz, Bengü Özuğur Uysal, Mehmet Önder Pekcan

Turkish Journal of Physics

Polyacrylamide (PAAm), a renowned member of the hydrogel class, has many uses throughout a wide range of industrial processes, including water absorbed diapers, contact lenses, wastewater treatment, biomedical applications such as drug delivery vehicles and tissue engineering because of its physical stability, durability, flexibility easier shaping, and so on. PAAm also provides new functionalities after the incorporation of inorganic structures such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). During the copolymerization process, the transmittance of all samples reduced significantly after a particular time, referred to as the gel point. Microgels form a tree above the gel point as projected by Flory-Stockmayer …

Deeply Learning Deep Inelastic Scattering Kinematics, Markus Diefenthaler, Abdullah Farhat, Andrii Verbytskyi, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We study the use of deep learning techniques to reconstruct the kinematics of the neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process in electron–proton collisions. In particular, we use simulated data from the ZEUS experiment at the HERA accelerator facility, and train deep neural networks to reconstruct the kinematic variables Q2 and x. Our approach is based on the information used in the classical construction methods, the measurements of the scattered lepton, and the hadronic final state in the detector, but is enhanced through correlations and patterns revealed with the simulated data sets. We show that, with the appropriate selection …

Imaging Based Beam Steering For Optical Communication And Lidar Applications, Sajad Saghaye Polkoo Jan 2022

Imaging Based Beam Steering For Optical Communication And Lidar Applications, Sajad Saghaye Polkoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Optical beam steering is a key component in any application that requires dynamic (i.e. realtime control) of beam propagation through free-space. Example applications include remote sensing, spectroscopy, laser machining, targeting, Lidar, optical wireless communications (OWC) and more. The pointing control requirements for many of these applications can be met by traditional mechanical steering techniques; however, these solutions tend to be bulky, slow, expensive, power hungry and prone to mechanical failures leading to short component lifetimes. Two emerging applications, Lidar imaging and OWC, truly need improved beam-steering capabilities to flourish and support the advancement of self-driving cars or relieve the congestion …

Structural, Electrical And Optical Properties Of Copper Oxide Phase Mixture: An Active Layer Of Solar Cell, Rifat Ara Shams

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Both CuO and Cu2O have been well studied and implemented individually as an active layer of a solar cell from early age of manufacturing. A mixture of these two-phase contents at different ratios can bring variance in absorbance which can present new and diverse aspect in solar cell fabrication with added efficiency. Previous works were successful to vary the phase mixture, and the nanostructures provided very high absorption co-efficient but poor optical response on electrical conductivity. The goal of this research is to find out the optimum parameter for the phase mixture of copper oxide with high absorption coefficient as …

Study Of Electrical And Magnetic Properties Of Ni/Nio Nanocomposite Thin Film, Bishwajite Karmakar

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In this thesis, detailed magnetic and electrical transport properties of composite thin films consisting of antiferromagnetic NiO, and ferromagnetic Ni have been studied. Highly oriented NiO thin films were grown on sapphire (0001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition with varying growth parameters such as oxygen pressure of the chamber and the substrate temperature. To obtain various percentage mixtures of Ni and NiO by means of introducing point defects (oxygen vacancies) into the NiO crystal structure, the as-grown films were annealed in forming gas (Ar:96% and H2:4%) at a fixed temperature of 600C and varying annealing time (0.5h to 6h). X-ray …

Field Emission Migration In Cebaf Srf Cavities Using Deep Learning, K. Ahammed, J. Li, A. Carpenter, R. Suleiman, C. Tennant, L. Vidyaratne Jan 2022

Field Emission Migration In Cebaf Srf Cavities Using Deep Learning, K. Ahammed, J. Li, A. Carpenter, R. Suleiman, C. Tennant, L. Vidyaratne

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) operates hundreds of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in its two main linear accelerators. Field emission can occur when the cavities are set to high operating RF gradients and is an ongoing operational challenge. This is especially true in newer, higher gradient SRF cavities. Field emission results in damage to accelerator hardware, generates high levels of neutron and gamma radiation, and has deleterious effects on CEBAF operations. So, field emission reduction is imperative for the reliable, high gradient operation of CEBAF that is required by experimenters. Here we explore the use of deep …

Measurement Of (Alpha, Neutron) Reactions And Development Of Analysis Tools With The Majorana Demonstrator, Tupendra Kumar Oli Jan 2022

Measurement Of (Alpha, Neutron) Reactions And Development Of Analysis Tools With The Majorana Demonstrator, Tupendra Kumar Oli

Dissertations and Theses

Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) is a hypothetical nuclear transition which, if observed, would prove that neutrinos are Majorana particles. In addition, the decay rate could provide an effective neutrino mass scale. The decay violates lepton number conservation and could offer a potential path to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe via leptogenesis. However, the experimental observation of this decay is very challenging and would require excellent energy resolution of detectors, low background levels, and high exposure. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR experiment searches for this decay in 76Ge using P-type Point Contact (PPC) High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. In addition, the …

Development And Characterization Of Germanium Detectors For Searching Rare-Event Physics, Rajendra Panth Jan 2022

Development And Characterization Of Germanium Detectors For Searching Rare-Event Physics, Rajendra Panth

Dissertations and Theses

High-purity germanium (HPGe) detector has an excellent energy resolution and low-energy detection threshold ideal for searching rare-event physics such as dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Understanding the electrical contact properties and the Ge detector properties is key to enhancing the use of Ge detectors for a wide range of applications. Amorphous Ge (a-Ge) is one of the passivation materials used to passivate Ge detectors, which also provides the barrier height to the charge injection. Several a-Ge contact Ge detectors were fabricated and tested at the University of South Dakota (USD) and Max-Planck-Institut (MPI) für Physik in Munich …

Cosmogenically-Induced Backgrounds In Legend, Clay Douglas Barton

Dissertations and Theses

Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) is a hypothetical nuclear decay mode. 0νββ searches are a high priority in nuclear physics. Discovery would ascertain the nature of the neutrino as the first known fundamental Majorana particle, and have far-reaching implications for physics beyond the Standard Model, including a lower bound on the effective neutrino mass scale, first direct evidence of a lepton number violating process, and insight into the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The next-generation LEGEND (Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless ββ Decay) project will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge. LEGEND builds on infrastructure and technical expertise of …

Measuring The Diphoton Production From Higgs Boson Decays And In Association With Heavy Flavor Jets, Brianna Lynn Dwyer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, two important measurements are presented related to diphoton production, the differential cross-section measurement of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel as well as a measurement on inclusive diphoton production with associated heavy-flavor jets. Selections between the two analyses are complimentary, making them a natural pairing in the context of this dissertation. The cross-section measurement is performed in a fiducial region of phase space to closely matches experimental selections. This allows for a largely model-independent measurement, providing a meticulous test of the Standard Model as well as other theoretical predictions. The production of diphoton + heavy-flavor …

Examining Ecological Succession Of Diatoms In California Current System Cyclonic Mesoscale Eddies, Zuzanna M. Abdala, Sophie Clayton, Sveinn V. Einarsson, Kimberly Powell, Claire P. Till, Tyler H. Coale, P. Dreux Chappell

OES Faculty Publications

The California Current System is a diatom-dominated region characterized by seasonal coastal upwelling and additional elevated mesoscale activity. Cyclonic mesoscale eddies in the region trap productive coastal waters with their planktonic communities and transport them offshore with limited interaction with surrounding waters, effectively acting as natural mesocosms, where phytoplankton populations undergo ecological succession as eddies age. This study examines diatom community composition within two mesoscale cyclonic eddies that formed in the same region of the California Current System 2 months apart and in the California Current waters surrounding them. The diatom communities were analyzed in the context of shifting environmental …

Development Of Computational Methods For Electronic Structural Characterization Of Strongly Correlated Materials: From Different Ab-Initio Perspectives, Uthpala K. Herath Jan 2022

Development Of Computational Methods For Electronic Structural Characterization Of Strongly Correlated Materials: From Different Ab-Initio Perspectives, Uthpala K. Herath

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The electronic correlations in materials drive a variety of fascinating phenomena from magnetism to metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT), which are due to the coupling between electron spin, charge, ionic displacements, and orbital ordering. Although Density Functional Theory (DFT) successfully describes the electronic structure of weakly interacting material systems, being a static mean-field approach, it fails to predict the properties of Strongly Correlated Materials (SCM) that include transition and rare earth metals where there is a prominent electron localization as in the case of d and f orbitals due to the nature of their spatial confinement.

Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) is …

Hot-Carrier Dynamics And Transport Mechanisms In Inas/Alassb Multiple Quantum Wells, Herath Pathiranage Janaka Chathuranga Piyathilaka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Semiconductor photovoltaics convert light into electricity through the extraction of photo-excited charge carriers. Among the most important parameters for a photovoltaic cell are good optical absorption in the desired region of the electromagnetic spectrum, and sufficient excited-state lifetimes and mobilities of the photocarriers to allow for charge separation and extraction before recombination. For solar cell applications there are significant challenges to overcome to improve the efficiency of the light-to-electricity conversion. The cells are most commonly made of silicon, which has a nearly perfect bandgap for absorbing the most solar radiation, an indirect bandgap to give a long photocarrier lifetime and …

In the realm of scalability for quantum devices, a way to …

Ion Velocity Distribution Functions In Cutting-Edge Plasmas, Mitchell Cameron Paul Jan 2022

Ion Velocity Distribution Functions In Cutting-Edge Plasmas, Mitchell Cameron Paul

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cutting-edge plasma experiments continue to push the frontiers of plasma science. Two such groups of experiments, helicon sources and laboratory magnetic reconnection, are the focus of this thesis. The relatively high plasma density achieved for modest input powers makes helicon source plasmas ideal testbeds for fusion-relevant phenomena without the complexities associated with fusion devices. Examples include plasma-material interaction (PMI) studies, divertor region studies, and boundary physics studies. As advancements in helicon source design and technology make operation at higher power for longer times possible, understanding of the plasma dynamics, particularly ion dynamics, is vital.

Laboratory experiments are essential to advancing …

Microwave Enhanced Electron Energy Distribution Functions, John Samuel Mckee Jan 2022

Microwave Enhanced Electron Energy Distribution Functions, John Samuel Mckee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of two (or more) radio frequency (RF) sources at different frequencies is a common technique in the plasma processing industry to control ion energy characteristics separately from plasma generation. A similar approach is presented here with the focus on modifying the electron population in argon and helium plasmas. The plasma is generated by a helicon source at a frequency f0 = 13.56 MHz. Microwaves of frequency f1 = 2.45 GHz are then injected into the helicon source chamber perpendicular to the background magnetic field. The microwaves damp on the electrons via R-mode (anti-parallel to the background magnetic field …

Electronic Structure Of Early Transition Metal Complexes Supported By Pyridine Polypyrrolide Ligands, Dylan Connor Leary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A thorough study of photoluminescent molecules involving the pyridine polypyrrole(ide) ligand platform has been conducted. A detailed analysis on speciation of the proligand H2(MesPDPPh) (H2MesPDPPh = 2,6-bis(5-mesityl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-pyridine) and its dilithium salt Li2(MesPDPPh) revealed temperature- and solvent-dependent effects. These molecules, along with the hydrochloric acid adduct [H3(MesPDPPh)]Cl were found to exhibit short-lived photoluminescence in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene solution. These findings confirm the hypothesis that heavy-atom involvement is crucial for the favorable photophysical properties observed for the Zr(PDP)2 …
