Adaptive Wiener Filter Super-Resolution Of Color Filter Array Images, Barry K. Karch, Russell C. Hardie
Adaptive Wiener Filter Super-Resolution Of Color Filter Array Images, Barry K. Karch, Russell C. Hardie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Digital color cameras using a single detector array with a Bayer color filter array (CFA) require interpolation or demosaicing to estimate missing color information and provide full-color images. However, demosaicing does not specifically address fundamental undersampling and aliasing inherent in typical camera designs. Fast non-uniform interpolation based super-resolution (SR) is an attractive approach to reduce or eliminate aliasing and its relatively low computational load is amenable to real-time applications. The adaptive Wiener filter (AWF) SR algorithm was initially developed for grayscale imaging and has not previously been applied to color SR demosaicing. Here, we develop a novel fast SR method …

In this paper we present a detailed study of the structures and morphologies of a sample of 1188 massive galaxies with M* ≥ 1010 M⊙between redshifts z = 1 and 3 within the Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) region of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) field. Using this sample we determine how galaxy structure and morphology evolve with time, and investigate the nature of galaxy structure at high redshift. We visually classify our sample into discs, ellipticals and peculiar systems and correct for redshift effects on these classifications through simulations. We find significant …

We have measured and calculated fully differential cross sections for target ionization in 16-MeV O7++He and 24-MeV O8++Li collisions. As in previous studies, in the case of the He target we observe a pronounced forward shift in the angular distribution of the electrons relative to the direction of the momentum transfer q at small q (q < 1 a.u.). An unexpected result is that we also find a strong forward shift at large q (q > 2 a.u.), while at intermediate q this shift becomes very weak or even turns into a backward shift. For the Li target, in contrast, the forward shift monotonically increases with increasing q. These observations are qualitatively reproduced by our calculations. …
Field Control Of The Surface Electroclinic Effect In Liquid Crystal Displays, Dana Hipolite
Field Control Of The Surface Electroclinic Effect In Liquid Crystal Displays, Dana Hipolite
Physics
Liquid crystals (LCs) are a fascinating class of materials exhibiting a range of phases intermediate between liquid and crystalline. Smectic LCs consist of elongated molecules arranged in a periodic stack (along z) of liquid like layers. In the smectic-A (Sm-A) phase, the average molecular long axis (director) points along z. In the smectic-C (Sm-C) phase, it is tilted relative to z, thus picking out a special direction within the layers. Typically, the Sm-A* to Sm- C* transition will occur as temperature is decreased. In chiral smectics (Sm-*A or Sm-C*) it is possible to induce director titling (i.e. the Sm-C* phase) …
Multi-Scale Defect Engineering And Interface Modifications For Enhancement Of Thermoelectric Properties In Nanostructured Bulk Materials, Pooja Puneet
All Dissertations
Among various static energy conversion technologies, the thermoelectric (TE) energy conversion has gained the considerable interest due to its reliability and ability to directly convert waste heat into electricity. In TE conversion technology, physical properties such as thermopower (α), electrical (σ) and thermal conductivity (κ) are exploited simultaneously to convert waste heat into electricity. The efficiency of such conversion depends upon various factors such as temperature, figure of merit (ZT= α2σ/ κ) etc. An inherent coupling among α, σ and κ limits ZT and thereby constrains one in achieving high efficiency. Many efforts have been carried out in decoupling TE …

Optical And Thermal Properties Of Spinel With Revised (Increased) Absorption At 4 To 5 Μm Wavelengths And Comparison With Sapphire, Daniel C. Harris, Giorgio Turri
Publications
Infrared absorption of high-quality, commercial, polycrystalline MgAl2O4 spinel is ∼40% greater in the range of 3.8 to 5.0 μm than the value predicted by the computer code OPTIMATR®, which has been used for window and dome design for more than 20 years. As a result, spinel and a-plane sapphire windows designed to support the same external pressure with the same probability of survival have approximately the same infrared absorptance in the range 3.8 to 5.0 μm. c-Plane sapphire has greater absorptance than spinel in the range 3.8 to 5.0 μm. Spinel has two weak absorption bands near 1.8 and 3.0 …

Measurement Of The Cp Violating Asymmetry A^S_Sl Using Bs0->(Ds->Phi Pi) Mu Nu, Alessandra Borgia
Dissertations - ALL
The time-integrated measurement of the semileptonic CP violating asymmetry, assl, with data acquired at the Large Hadron Collider with the LHCb experiment is presented. This measurement can help physicists understand some peculiarities in the Standard Model, which is the fundamental framework of knowledge of the universe. Should this asymmetry diverge from zero, new physics may be a main motivator. Using 1 fb-1 of collected data in 2011 with proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the measured value of assl presented is (-0.06 ± 0.50 ± 0.36)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the …
Top-Quark Transverse-Momentum Distributions In T-Channel Single-Top Production, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Top-Quark Transverse-Momentum Distributions In T-Channel Single-Top Production, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Faculty Articles
I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) top-quark transverse momentum, pT , distributions in t-channel single-top production. These distributions are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) soft-gluon resummation. Theoretical results for the single top as well as the single antitop pT distributions are shown for LHC and Tevatron energies.
Nonrelativistic Limit Of The Dirac-Schwarzschild Hamiltonian: Gravitational Zitterbewegung And Gravitational Spin-Orbit Coupling, Ulrich D. Jentschura, J. H. Noble
Nonrelativistic Limit Of The Dirac-Schwarzschild Hamiltonian: Gravitational Zitterbewegung And Gravitational Spin-Orbit Coupling, Ulrich D. Jentschura, J. H. Noble
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the nonrelativistic limit of the gravitationally coupled Dirac equation via a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. The relativistic correction terms have immediate and obvious physical interpretations in terms of a gravitational Zitterbewegung and a gravitational spin-orbit coupling. We find no direct coupling of the spin vector to the gravitational force, which would otherwise violate parity. The particle-antiparticle symmetry described recently by one of us is verified on the level of the perturbative corrections accessed by the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. The gravitational corrections to the electromagnetic transition current are calculated.
Hemoglobin-Mediated Nitric Oxide Signaling, Christine C. Helms, D. B. Kim-Shapiro
Hemoglobin-Mediated Nitric Oxide Signaling, Christine C. Helms, D. B. Kim-Shapiro
Physics Faculty Publications
The rate that hemoglobin reacts with nitric oxide (NO) is limited by how fast NO can diffuse into the heme pocket. The reaction is as fast as any ligand/protein reaction can be and the result, when hemoglobin is in its oxygenated form, is formation of nitrate in what is known as the dioxygenation reaction. As nitrate, at the concentrations made through the deoxygenation reaction, is biologically inert, the only role hemoglobin was once thought to play in NO signaling was to inhibit it. However, there are now several mechanisms that have been discovered by which hemoglobin may preserve, control, and …

We then give theoretical background of density functional theory (including LDA+U) and pseudopotentials. The first part of research work is about structural, polarization, and dielectric properties of ferroelectric Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) solid solution in the form of a nanotube array, embedded in a matrix medium of different ferroelectric strengths. We use the effective Hamiltonian derived from first-principles and finite-temperature Monte Carlo methods to determine the various properties. We revealed different …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Advancements in integrated nanoelectronics will continue to require the use of unique materials or systems of materials with diverse functionalities in increasingly confined spaces.
Hence, research on finite-dimensional systems strive to unearth and expand the knowledge of fundamental physical properties in certain key materials which exhibit numerous concurrent and exploitable functions.
Correspondingly, ferroelectric nanostructures, which particularly display a plethora of complex phenomena, prevalent in countless fields of research, are noteworthy candidates. Presently, however, the assimilation of zero-(0D) and one-dimensional (1D) ferroelectric into micro- or nano-electronics has been lagging, in part due to a lack of applied and fundamental studies but …
Ferroelectric And Dielectric Properties Of Electroactive Oligomers And Nanocomposites, Kristin Leigh Kraemer
Ferroelectric And Dielectric Properties Of Electroactive Oligomers And Nanocomposites, Kristin Leigh Kraemer
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymers have been well established as ferroelectric polymers. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties for vinylidene fluoride (VDF) oligomer thin films were investigated. By synthesizing oligomers instead of long polymer chains, films with higher crystalinity can be formed and the locations of oligomers can be controlled for applications such as molecular electronics.
Evidence of ferroelectricity was observed in oligomer thin films evaporated onto room temperature substrates and by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition. Voltage and frequency dependence of the capacitance was measured. Oligomers functionalized with phosphonic acid formed self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on aluminum and mica substrates. Film thickness …

Studies Of Shrinkage In Photopolymerisable Materials For Holographic Applications, Mohesh Moothanchery
Doctoral
Holography is now firmly established as a tool for scientific and engineering studies and also as a display medium. Holographic performance mainly depends on the choice of recording wavelengths, recording material, recording conditions and experimental setup as well as environmental conditions in the laboratory. Acrylamide based photopolymer has significant advantages as a holographic recording material such as self-development, low scatter, high diffraction efficiency, ease of preparation and low cost. The main objective of this project is to determine and minimise the shrinkage of an acrylamide based photopolymer developed in the Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics for holographic recording. This …

Modification Of Smeared Phase Transitions By Spatial Disorder Correlations, David Nozadze, Christopher Svoboda, Fawaz Hrahsheh, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Phase transitions in disordered systems can be smeared if rare spatial regions develop true static order while the bulk system is in the disordered phase. Here, we study the effects of spatial disorder correlations on such smeared phase transitions. The behaviors of observables are determined within optimal fluctuation theory. We show that even short-range correlations can qualitatively modify smeared phase transitions. For positive correlations (like impurity atoms attract each other), the order parameter is enhanced, while it is suppressed for repulsive correlations (like atoms repel each other). We use computer simulations to generate various types of disorder correlations, and to …

High-Order-Harmonic Generation From Molecular Isomers With Midinfrared Intense Laser Pulses, Anh-Thu Le, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present theoretical calculations of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) from stereoisomers of 1,2-dichloroethylene (C₂H₂Cl₂) and 2-butene (C₄H₈) based on the quantitative rescattering theory. Our results show that the HHG spectra from these cis and trans isomers with intense midinfrared laser pulses are clearly distinguishable, even when the molecules are randomly oriented, in good agreement with the recent experiments by Wonget al. [Phys. Rev. A 84, 051403(R) (2011)]. We found that the angle-averaged tunneling ionization yields and photoionization cross sections from the cis and trans isomers for both molecules are nearly identical. The origin of the differences in HHG spectra is traced …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Past nuclear accidents, such as Chernobyl, resulted in a large release of radionuclides into the atmosphere. Radiological assessment of the vicinity of the site of the incident is vital to assess the exposure levels and dose received by the population and workers. Therefore, it is critical to thoroughly understand the situation and risks associated with a particular event in a timely manner in order to properly manage the event. Current atmospheric radiological assessments of alpha emitting radioisotopes include acquiring large quantities of air samples, chemical separation of radionuclides, sample mounting, counting through alpha spectrometry, and analysis of the data. Controllability Of Open Quantum Optical Systems: Photon Fock States In A Cavity, Byron Henry Lowry
Controllability Of Open Quantum Optical Systems: Photon Fock States In A Cavity, Byron Henry Lowry
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
There has always been a significant interest in using optical systems to control quantum phenomena. A major barrier to controllability of quantum optical systems is the fact that the systems are usually innite dimensional open systems, two cases which have mostly negative controllability results. This thesis develops three new definitions of controllability and reformulates a previous controllability theorem in order to apply the theorem to the system of interest. Then, the controllability of a pumped dissipative quantum optical cavity with engineered decoherence is investigated using previously developed concepts in quantum control theory, as well as the ones developed in this …

Breaking Peroxy Bonds In H20 Ice Doped With H202 To Create Positive Hole Charge Carriers., Corey C. Stockburger
STAR Program Research Presentations
Using stress-activated electric conductivity in water ice doped with hydrogen peroxide as a model for stress-activated electric conductivity of igneous and high-grade metamorphic rocks due to the presence of peroxy defects, which when broken, createpositive-hole charge carriers. Blocks of pure H2O ice and H2O2–doped H2O ices, frozen at –20°C, will be stressed with piezo electric transducers(pzt) at one end to generate stress-activated electric currents flowing down the stress gradient. Pure H2O ice should produce no current or a small insignificant amount during rapid deformation or fracture. Stressing H2O2-doped H2O ices, however, should lead to 100-1000 times higher currents. These stress-activated …

High-Performance, Scalable Optical Network-On-Chip Architectures, Xianfang Tan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The rapid advance of technology enables a large number of processing cores to be integrated into a single chip which is called a Chip Multiprocessor (CMP) or a Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) design. The on-chip interconnection network, which is the communication infrastructure for these processing cores, plays a central role in a many-core system. With the continuously increasing complexity of many-core systems, traditional metallic wired electronic networks-on-chip (NoC) became a bottleneck because of the unbearable latency in data transmission and extremely high energy consumption on chip. Optical networks-on-chip (ONoC) has been proposed as a promising alternative paradigm for electronic NoC with …

Tidal Heating And Mlt Tidal Wind Variability Due To The El Nino-Southern Oscillation, Kristi Warner
All Theses
Tides forced by large-scale weather systems in the tropical troposphere in- troduce significant longitudinal and local time variability in the upper atmosphere. This thesis presents the latent tidal heating variability for 2002-2011 due to variation in tropospheric deep convection associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the tidal wind response in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region. Emphasis is on the strong ENSO cycle 2009-2011. Latent tidal heating rates are computed from TRMM satellite precipitation data, with added radiative heating from MERRA reanalysis, as functions of time, latitude, and altitude. The heating rates for the two most affected nonmigrating tides …

Nanotechnology has revolutionalized the landscape of modern science and technology, including materials, electronics, therapeutics, bioimaging, sensing, and the environment. Research in the past decade has examined the fate of nanomaterials in vitro and in vivo, as well as the interactions between nanoparticles and biological and ecosystems using primarily toxicological and ecotoxicological approaches. However, due to the versatility in the physical and physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, and due to the vast complexity of their hosting systems, the solubility, transformation, and biocompatibility of nanomaterials are still poorly understood. Nanotechnology has been undergoing tremendous development in recent decades, driven by realized perceived applications …
Numerical Analysis And Theory Of Oblique Alfvenic Solitons Observed In The Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Harry Raphael Wheeler Iv
Numerical Analysis And Theory Of Oblique Alfvenic Solitons Observed In The Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Harry Raphael Wheeler Iv
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Recently, there have been reports of small magnetic pulses or bumps in the interplanetary magnetic field observed by various spacecraft. Most of these reports claim that these localized pulses or bumps are solitons. Solitons are weakly nonlinear localized waves that tend to retain their form as they propagate and can be observed in various media which exhibit nonlinear steepening and dispersive effects. This thesis expands the claim that these pulses or bumps are nonlinear oblique Alfven waves with soliton components, through the application of analytical techniques used in the inverse scattering transform in a numerical context and numerical integration of …

We examine the validity of fluctuation-dissipation relations in isolated quantum systems taken out of equilibrium by a sudden quench. We focus on the dynamics of trapped hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices with dipolar interactions whose strength is changed during the quench. We find indications that fluctuation-dissipation relations hold if the system is nonintegrable after the quench, as well as if it is integrable after the quench if the initial state is an equilibrium state of a nonintegrable Hamiltonian. On the other hand, we find indications that they fail if the system is integrable both before and after quenching.

Magnetic Interactions In Low-Dimensional Iron Nanostructures, Rui Zhang
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Three systems involving low-dimensional magnetic nanostructures, namely the Kondo Effect in Isolated Cu(Fe) Clusters, Magnetization Reversal in Transition-Metal/Fe:SiO2 Thin Films, and Anisotropy and Micromagnetism of Fe/CrPt Bilayers, have been investigated to understand the magnetic interactions in iron nanostructures.
Kondo Effect in Isolated Cu(Fe) Clusters —Iron impurities were added into copper clusters embedded in an insulating matrix to ensure that the Kondo effect is strictly confined by the size of the cluster. The Kondo temperature of our naoscale system is 0.7 K, which is greatly suppressed from its bulk value of 29 K and is consistent with our theory prediction. …

Electron Matter Optics Of The Aharonov–Bohm And Stern–Gerlach Effects, Scot Mcgregor
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the advent of quantum mechanics and the idea that massive particles exhibit wave properties, physicists have made efforts to make use of the short deBroglie wave length of matter waves for fundamental as well as practical studies. Among these are the precise measurements allowed by interference, diffraction, and microscopy as well as the study of more fundamental aspects of quantum theory such as the Aharonov-Bohm effects or the Stern-Gerlach effect, which are described below. However, in order to use matter waves to observe any of these effects it is necessary to produce and maintain coherence in the waves which …
