The charm fragmentation function has been measured in D* photoproduction with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The fragmentation function is measured versus z = (E +p||)D* /2Ejet, where E is the energy of the D * meson and p|| is the longitudinal momentum of the D * meson relative to the axis of the associated jet of energy Ejet. Jets were reconstructed using the kT clustering algorithm and required to have transverse energy larger than 9GeV. The D* meson associated with the jet was required to have a transverse momentum larger than 2GeV. …

The commercial protoporphyrin IX, iron-ferriprotoporphyrin IX-chloride and synthesized iron porphyrin μ-oxo-dimers were examined by UV/vis absorption and fluorescence, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, resonance Raman, X-ray absorption, Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID. The evidence of Fe-O-Fe antiferromagnetic coupling concluded from SQUID and Mössbauer in the case of samples containing dimerized forms confirmed the presence of the oxo-bridges. In this paper the results of UV/vis, fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared FTIR and Raman spectroscopies are reported and discussed. Studies on strongly correlated electron systems over decades have allowed physicists to discover unusual properties such as spin density waves, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states with unusual ordering of spins and orbitals, and Mott insulating states, to name a few.
In this thesis, the focus will be on the specific heat property of these materials exhibiting novel electronic ground states in the presence and absence of a field. The purpose of these measurements is to characterize the phase transitions into these states and the low energy excitations in these states. Electrokinetic transport of cylindrical cells under dc electric fields in a straight microfluidic channel is experimentally and numerically investigated with emphasis on the dielectrophoretic (DEP) effect on their orientation variations. A two-dimensional multiphysics model, composed of the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid flow and the Laplace equation for the electric potential defined in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework, is employed to capture the transient electrokinetic motion of cylindrical cells. The numerical predictions of the particle transport are in quantitative agreement with the obtained experimental results, suggesting that the DEP effect should be taken into account to study the electrokinetic transport of …

The dynamics of vortex solitons is studied in a BEC superfluid. A quantum lattice-gas algorithm (measurementbased quantum computation) is employed to examine the dynamical behavior vortex soliton solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (ø4 interaction nonlinear Schroedinger equation). Quantum turbulence is studied in large grid numerical simulations: Kolmogorov spectrum associated with a Richardson energy cascade occurs on large flow scales. At intermediate scales, a new k-6 power law emerges, due to vortex filamentary reconnections associated with Kelvin wave instabilities (vortex twisting) coupling to sound modes and the exchange of intermediate vortex rings. Magnetotactic bacteria orient and migrate along geomagnetic field lines. Magneto-aerotaxis increases the efficiency of respiring microaerophilic cells to efficiently find and maintain a position at a preferred microaerobic oxygen concentration. Magneto-aerotaxis could also facilitate access to regions of higher nutrient and electron acceptor concentration via periodic excursions above and below the preferred oxygen concentration level.

We present the results obtained from an all-sky search for gravitational-wave (GW) bursts in the 64–2000 Hz frequency range in data collected by the LIGO detectors during the first year (November 2005—November 2006) of their fifth science run. The total analyzed live time was 268.6 days. Multiple hierarchical data analysis methods were invoked in this search. The overall sensitivity expressed in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude hrss for gravitational-wave bursts with various morphologies was in the range of 6×10−22 Hz−1/2 to a few×10−21 Hz−1/2. No GW signals were observed and a frequentist upper limit of 3.75 events per …
