Quantitative Analyses Of Dispersion, Doping And Electronic Separation Of Single Wall Hipco Carbon Nanotubes, Priya Baskar Rao
Quantitative Analyses Of Dispersion, Doping And Electronic Separation Of Single Wall Hipco Carbon Nanotubes, Priya Baskar Rao
Doctoral
As prepared SWNTs are obtained in bundles with a mixture of both metallic and semi conducting tubes. For many specific applications, electronically separated single individual tubes are required and in order to reach these application criteria, the tubes should be processed. This thesis reports on a systematic exploration of methods to routinely process, electronically separate and characterise commercially available single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Commercially available HiPco SWNTs were dispersed in water with the assistance of 1 % by weight sodium dodecyl benzene sulphate (SDBS). The tubes were dispersed in the water surfactant system through the aid of sonication and …
Holographic Liquid Crystal Devices, Kotakonda Pavani
Holographic Liquid Crystal Devices, Kotakonda Pavani
Doctoral
Liquid crystals have become natural candidates for use in electro-optic devices for their ability to change the orientation of the director with the application of an electric field, and exhibiting large range of refractive index. The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to fabricate liquid crystal optoelectronic devices such as electrically switchable liquid crystal diffraction gratings and polarization rotators by exploiting the holographic surface relief effect in photopolymer and by developing novel polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs). Alignment of liquid crystals is commercially achieved by creating grooves on a conducting layer such as polyimide or indium tin …

Toxicity Assessment Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Eva Herzog
Doctoral
The objective of this study was to investigate the potential adverse health effects of occupational exposure to SWCNT dust using various in vitro approaches. Lung epithelium (represented by A549 and NHBE cells) was chosen as target cell model and exposed to minimally processed particle samples under submerse conditions and effects were compared to that of carbon black and crocidolite asbestos exposure. Cytotoxicity studies indicated low acute cytotoxicity of SWCNT. Morphological changes included decreases in microvilli and increased numbers of surfactant storing lamellar bodies and changes in cytoskeleton. Due to interactions of SWCNT and toxicity indicator dyes, the clonogenic assay was …

Development And Evaluation Of A Novel Automated Physchophysical Instrument For The Investigation Of Nyctalopia Using Multiple Stimulus Light Emitting Diode Matrix Display Arrays., David M.C. O'Brien
Doctoral
Vitamin A deficiency primarily affects young children in developing countries, the symptoms of which initially present as nyctalopia, an inability of the eyes of ‘see’ in low luminance levels, specifically at twilight or at night. Vitamin A deficiency is a major cause of blindness in developing countries and is associated with significant increases in child morbidity and mortality. Nyctalopia may be examined using dark adaptometry; however, current methods of dark adaptometry have many practical limitations, including their unsuitability for use with children. This thesis reports on the design, construction, testing and evaluation of a novel automated dark adaptometer for use …
X-Ray Diffraction Study Of Dysprosium Single Crystal Samples In A Diamond Anvil Cell (Dac), Ognjen Grubor-Urosevic
X-Ray Diffraction Study Of Dysprosium Single Crystal Samples In A Diamond Anvil Cell (Dac), Ognjen Grubor-Urosevic
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
X-ray diffraction is the basis of crystallography, the study of the structure of crystals. It uses X-rays of a wavelength on the order of the size of atoms, so it can resolve the positions of individual atoms in a crystal. Illuminating the crystal with a well-collimated X-ray beam produces X-rays diffracted in a certain direction for a specific crystal orientation. By analyzing the relative phase of the incoming and outgoing scattered X-rays, the unique arrangements of atoms can be determined and the structure of the crystal can be solved.
There is a long standing controversy regarding the crystal structures and …
Evaluation Of Extraction Chromatography Resins For Rapid Actinide Analysis, Julie Marisa Gostic
Evaluation Of Extraction Chromatography Resins For Rapid Actinide Analysis, Julie Marisa Gostic
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this work, physical and chemical parameters associated with extraction chromatography separation procedures were investigated for rapid actinide analysis. A vacuum box system was designed in-house and was characterized in terms of flow rate reproducibility, matrix effects on flow rate for sequential elution, and actinide separation efficiency using different types of resin (TEVA, DGA and TRU). Results indicated that the columnar kinetics of the resins were sufficiently rapid to run high purity samples through the unit over a wide range of flow rates for all resin types. Single matrix interferences at a metal ion ratio of 1:10 6 relative to …

Ac Susceptibility And Heat Capacity Studies Of The Geometrically Frustrated Pyrochlores Terbium Titanium Tin Oxides And Holmium Titanates, Daniel Antonio
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Materials with a geometrically frustrated magnetic pyrochlore lattice have been of interest due to their unusual ground states. Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 is known for having a spin liquid ground state which does not transition to a long-range ordered state down to at least 50 mK. Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 has a macroscopically degenerate spin ice ground state which resembles that of the proton ordering in water ice. Heat Capacity measurements of Tb 2 Ti 2- x Sn x O 7 were done down to 0.36 K and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of Ho 2- x …

High Pressure Phase Transistions In The Lanthanide Sesquioxides, Jason Patrick Mcclure
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Crystallizing into 5 known polymorphic forms, the rare-Earth sesquioxides RE 2 O 3 represent a family of 4-f electron compounds that have been the subject of study for many years. Aspects of the systematics in the structural phase transitions for RE 2 O 3 (RE=La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Y, Er, Yb, Lu) under pressure were studied using diamond anvil cells (DACs). As a part of this study, detailed equation of state (EOS) data for all these compounds were obtained through the use of angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction (XRD) where anomalies in compression data led to the detailed investigation into one particular …

Static High Pressure Ft-Ir Spectroscopic Studies Of Tatb, Brian F. Yulga
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Static high-pressure experiments utilizing diamond anvil cells (DACs) provide an alternative method to shockwave studies for extracting precise information on the physical and chemical properties of energetic materials. Due to mechanical restraints (e.g. small sample sizes and apertures), synchrotron radiation sources are ideal for probing the structure of materials at the molecular level. 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) is an insensitive (tertiary) high explosive (iHE) useful in military applications. Compared to other conventional iHEs, it is a safer and more stable energetic material. Its unique properties cause it to be of interest in the energetic materials research community. A series of Fourier-transform infrared …
Research On The Transport And Deposition Of Nanoparticles In A Rotating Curved Pipe, Jianzhong Lin, Peifeng Lin, Huajun Chen
Research On The Transport And Deposition Of Nanoparticles In A Rotating Curved Pipe, Jianzhong Lin, Peifeng Lin, Huajun Chen
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
A finite-volume code and the SIMPLE scheme are used to study the transport and deposition of nanoparticles in a rotating curved pipe for different angular velocities, Dean numbers, and Schmidt numbers. The results show that when the Schmidt number is small, the nanoparticle distributions are mostly determined by the axial velocity. When the Schmidt number is many orders of magnitude larger than 1, the secondary flow will dominate the nanoparticle distribution. When the pipe corotates, the distribution of nanoparticle mass fraction is similar to that for the stationary case. There is a “hot spot” deposition region near the outside edge …

Yttrium And Hydrogen Superstructure And Correlation Of Lattice Expansion And Proton Conductivity In The Bazr0.9y0.1o2.95 Proton Conductor, A. Braun, A. Ovalle, V. Pomjakushin, A. Cervellino, S. Erat, Wayne C. Stolte, T. Graule
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
Bragg reflections in Y-resonant x-ray diffractograms of BaZr0.9Y0.1O2.95 (BZY10) reveal that Y is organized in a superstructure. Comparison with neutron diffraction superstructure reflections in protonated/deuterated BZY10 suggests that both superstructures are linked, and that protons move in the landscape imposed by the Y. The thermal lattice expansion decreases abruptly for protonated BZY10 at T≥648±20 K, coinciding with the onset of lateral proton diffusion and suggesting a correlation of structural changes and proton conductivity. The chemical shift in the Y L1-shell x-ray absorption spectra reveals a reduction from Y3+ toward Y2+ upon …
Field Induced Domain Wall Collisions In Thin Magnetic Nanowires, Andrew Kunz
Field Induced Domain Wall Collisions In Thin Magnetic Nanowires, Andrew Kunz
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
In a two-dimensional magnetic nanowire, it is possible to engineer collisions between two domain walls put into motion by an externally applied field. We show that the topological defects that define the domain wall can be controlled to allow for both domain wall annihilation and preservation during the collisions as long as the wire remains thin. The preservation process can be used to release pinned domain walls from notches with small applied fields.

Optimization Of The Microprecipitation Procedure For Nuclear Forensics Applications, Lyndsey Renee Kelly
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Microprecipitation has become one of the most widely used sample preparation techniques for alpha spectroscopy. Many factors during the precipitation process can affect the yield and energy resolution by adding unwanted mass to the sample. Current applications in nuclear forensics call for an optimization of energy resolution and yield in order to improve identification and quantify specific radionuclides. The purpose of this research is to determine the optimal parameters used for microprecipitation. The optimal solution temperature, precipitation time, carrier amount, and hydrofluoric acid amount are used to investigate the influence of varying the type of carrier, as well as, the …
Diagnostics For Ultracold Plasma Experiments, Lauren Rand
Diagnostics For Ultracold Plasma Experiments, Lauren Rand
Honors Theses
The goal of this experiment was to observe the effects of variations of experimental conditions on the ultracold plasma that formed as a result. The wavelength and power of the ionizing laser were varied to change the electron temperature and plasma density. The delay between the ionizing laser and the field ionization pulse was changed as well. In each case, plasma evolution and the resulting distribution of Rydberg states were observed. It was found that both electron temperature and plasma density directly affected the plasma lifetimes. However, neither electron temperature nor plasma density nor delay length had an effect on …

Recent And Emerging Applications Of Holographic Photopolymers And Nanocomposites, Izabela Naydenova, Pavani Kotakonda, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Tsvetanka Babeva, Denis Bade, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova
Conference Papers
Sensing applications of holograms may be based on effects such as change in the spacing of the recorded fringes in a holographic diffraction grating in the presence of an analyte so that the direction of the diffracted laser light changes, or, in the case of a white light reflection grating, the wavelength of the diffracted light changes. An example is a reflection grating which swells in the presence of atmospheric moisture to indicate relative humidity by a change is the colour of the diffracted light. These devices make use of the photopolymer’s ability to absorb moisture. In a more versatile …

Articles
Holographic recording in thick photopolymer layers is important for application in holographic data storage, volume holographic filters and correlators. Here, the characteristics of acrylamidebased photopolymer layers having thickness from 250 μm to 1-mm were studied. For each layer thickness samples with three different values of absorbance were studied. By measuring both the first order diffraction efficiency growth of holographically recorded gratings and studying the diffraction patterns obtained, the influence of scattering on the diffraction efficiency of thick volume holographic gratings was analyzed. It was observed that above a particular thickness and absorbance, the first order diffraction efficiency significantly decreased because …

Tunable Terahertz Detectors Based On Plasmon Exciation In Two Dimensional Electron Gasses In Ingaas/Inp And Algan/Gan Hemt, Himanshu Saxena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The observation of voltage-tunable plasmon resonances in the terahertz range in two dimensional electron gas (2-deg) of a high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) fabricated from the InGaAs/InP and AlGaN/GaN materials systems is reported. The devices were fabricated from a commercial HEMT wafer by depositing source and drain contacts using standard photolithography process and a semi-transparent gate contact that consisted of a 0.5 [micro]m period transmission grating formed by electron-beam lithography. Narrow-band resonant absorption of THz radiation was observed in transmission in the frequency range 10-100 cm-1. The resonance frequency depends on the gate voltage-tuned sheet-charge density of the 2deg. The …
Decoherence In Semiconductor Solid-State Quantum Computers, Diego Valente
Decoherence In Semiconductor Solid-State Quantum Computers, Diego Valente
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation we discuss decoherence in charge qubits formed by multiple lateral quantum dots in the framework of the spin-boson model and the Born-Markov approximation. We consider the intrinsic decoherence caused by the coupling to bulk phonon modes and electromagnetic environmental fluctuations. In the case of decoherence caused by phonon coupling, two distinct quantum dot configurations are studied and proposed as setups that mitigate its nocive effects : (i) Three quantum dots in a ring geometry with one excess electron in total and (ii) arrays of quantum dots where the computational basis states form multipole charge configurations. For the …
Search, Characterization, And Properties Of Brown Dwarfs, Ramarao Tata
Search, Characterization, And Properties Of Brown Dwarfs, Ramarao Tata
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A trend in polarization as predicted by theoretical models was validated, and atmospheric dust grain sizes and projected rotational velocities for these objects were estimated. Comprehensive studies of UDs are proving to be crucial not only in our understanding of UDs but also for star and planet formation as brown dwarfs represent their lower and upper mass boundaries, respectively. Brown dwarfs (BD) were mere theoretical astrophysical objects for more than three decades (Kumar (1962)) till their first observational detection in 1995 (Rebolo et al. (1995), Nakajima et al. (1995)). These objects are intermediate in mass between stars and planets. Since …

In-Situ Gas Phase Catalytic Properties Of Metal Nanoparticles, Luis Ono
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in surface science technology have opened new opportunities for atomic scale studies in the field of nanoparticle (NP) catalysis. The 2007 Nobel Prize of Chemistry awarded to Prof. G. Ertl, a pioneer in introducing surface science techniques to the field of heterogeneous catalysis, shows the importance of the field and revealed some of the fundamental processes of how chemical reactions take place at extended surfaces. However, after several decades of intense research, fundamental understanding on the factors that dominate the activity, selectivity, and stability (life-time) of nanoscale catalysts are still not well understood. This dissertation aims to explore …

Wavefront Sensor For Eye Aberrations Measurements, Costin Curatu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ocular wavefront sensing is vital to improving our understanding of the human eye and to developing advanced vision correction methods, such as adaptive optics, customized contact lenses, and customized laser refractive surgery. It is also a necessary technique for high-resolution imaging of the retina. The most commonly used wavefront sensing method is based on the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. Since Junzhong Liang's first application of Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing for the human eye in 1994, the method has quickly gained acceptance and popularity in the ophthalmic industry. Several commercial Shack-Hartmann eye aberrometers are currently available. While the existing aberrometers offer reasonable measurement …
Optical Nonlinear Interactions In Dielectric Nano-Suspensions, Ramy El-Ganainy
Optical Nonlinear Interactions In Dielectric Nano-Suspensions, Ramy El-Ganainy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work is divided into two main parts. In the first part (chapters 2-7) we consider the nonlinear response of nano-particle colloidal systems. Starting from the Nernst-Planck and Smoluchowski equations, we demonstrate that in these arrangements the underlying nonlinearities as well as the nonlinear Rayleigh losses depend exponentially on optical intensity. Two different nonlinear regimes are identified depending on the refractive index contrast of the nanoparticles involved and the interesting prospect of self-induced transparency is demonstrated. Soliton stability is systematically analyzed for both 1D and 2D configurations and their propagation dynamics in the presence of Rayleigh losses is examined. We …
Wavelength-Division-Multiplexed Transmission Using Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers And Electronic Impairment Compensation, Xiaoxu Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the last decade, rapid growth of broadband services necessitated research aimed at increasing transmission capacity in fiber-optic communication systems. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology has been widely used in fiber-optic systems to fully utilize fiber transmission bandwidth. Among optical amplifiers for WDM transmission, semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is a promising candidate, thanks to its broad bandwidth, compact size, and low cost. In transmission systems using SOAs, due to their large noise figures, high signal launching powers are required to ensure reasonable optical signal-to-noise ratio of the received signals. Hence the SOAs are operated in the saturation region and the …

Gabor Domain Optical Coherence Microscopy, Supraja Murali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Time domain Optical Coherence Tomography (TD-OCT), first reported in 1991, makes use of the low temporal coherence properties of a NIR broadband laser to create depth sectioning of up to 2mm under the surface using optical interferometry and point to point scanning. Prior and ongoing work in OCT in the research community has concentrated on improving axial resolution through the development of broadband sources and speed of image acquisition through new techniques such as Spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT). In SD-OCT, an entire depth scan is acquired at once with a low numerical aperture (NA) objective lens focused at a fixed …
Nonlinear Femtosecond Near Infrared Laser Structuring In Oxide Glasses, Arnaud Royon
Nonlinear Femtosecond Near Infrared Laser Structuring In Oxide Glasses, Arnaud Royon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Three-dimensional femtosecond laser structuring has a growing interest because of its ease of implementation and the numerous possible applications in the domain of photonic components. Structures such as waveguides, diffraction gratings, optical memories or photonic crystals can be fabricated thanks to this technique. Its use with oxide glasses is promising because of several advantages; they are resistant to flux and ageing, their chemical composition can easily be changed to fit the well-defined requirements of an application. They can already be found in Raman amplifiers, optical fibers, fiber lasers, and other devices. This thesis is based on two axes. The first …

A wide range of applications currently utilize conventional optical elements to individually transform the phase, polarization, and spectral transmission/reflection of the incident radiation to realize the desired system level function. The material properties and the feasibility of fabrication primarily impact the device and system functionality that can be realized. With the advancement in micro/nano patterning, growth, deposition and etching technology, devices with novel and multiplexed optical functionalities have become feasible. As a result, it has become possible to engineer the device response in the near and far field by controlling the phase, polarization or spectral response at the micro scale. …
Femtosecond Laser Written Volumetric Diffractive Optical Elements And Their Applications, Jiyeon Choi
Femtosecond Laser Written Volumetric Diffractive Optical Elements And Their Applications, Jiyeon Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the first demonstration of femtosecond laser written waveguides in 1996, femtosecond laser direct writing (FLDW) has been providing a versatile means to fabricate embedded 3-D microstructures in transparent materials. The key mechanisms are nonlinear absorption processes that occur when a laser beam is tightly focused into a material and the intensity of the focused beam reaches the range creating enough free electrons to induce structural modification. One of the most useful features that can be exploited in fabricating photonic structures is the refractive index change which results from the localized energy deposition. The laser processing system for FLDW can …

Multiple-Time States And Multiple-Time Measurements In Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen, Lev Vaidman
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We discuss experimental situations that consist of multiple preparation and measurement stages. This leads us to an alternative approach to quantum mechanics. In particular, we introduce the idea of multitime quantum states which are the appropriate tools for describing these experimental situations. We also describe multitime measurements and discuss their relation to multitime states. A consequence of our formalism is to put states and operators on an equal footing. Finally we discuss the implications of our approach to quantum mechanics for the problem of the flow of time.

Comment On "On The Theory Of Nuclear Resonant Forward Scattering Of Synchrotron Radiation", Gilbert R. Hoy, Jos Odeurs
Physics Faculty Publications
Recently, in a paper by Kohn and Smirnov, a formula previously derived by Kagan et al. was developed to explain the forward scattering of gamma radiation by a nuclear-resonant sample excited by pulsed synchrotron radiation. Their derivation followed, directly, a procedure developed by Heitler, Harris, and Hoy. Previously, a completely different formula was developed by Hoy et al. to explain the same process. As a result, Kohn and Smirnov discuss the correctness and validity of the two models. In this Comment a detailed numerical comparison of the two theories has also been made. It is shown that their comparison is …
