[1] We present an analysis of the alpha to proton solar wind abundance ratio (AHe) during a period characterized by significant large size scale density fluctuations, focusing on an event in which the proton and alpha enhancements are anti-correlated. In a recent study using 11 years (1995–2005) of solar wind observations from the Wind spacecraft, N. M. Viall et al. [2008] showed that periodic proton density structures occurred at particular radial length-scales more often than others. The source of these periodic density structures is a significant and outstanding question. Are they generated in the interplanetary medium, or are they a …

Among the ferroelectric thin films used in field-effect transistor devices; the ferroelectric copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF –CH2–CF2–, with trifluoroethylene TrFE –CHF–CF2–, has distinct advantages, including low dielectric constant, low processing temperature, low cost, and compatibility with organic semiconductors. The operation of a metal-ferroelectric insulatorsemiconductor structure with PVDF-TrFE as the ferroelectric layer was analyzed and optimized by numerical solution of the Miller and McWhorter model. A model device consisting of 20 nm PVDF/TrFE on a 10-nm-thick high-k dielectric buffer exhibits a memory window of 5 V with an operating voltage of 15 V. The operating voltage can be reduced to …

Recent studies reveal that suspensions of neutrally buoyant non-Brownian particles driven by slow periodic shear can undergo a dynamical phase transition between a fluctuating irreversible steady state and an absorbing reversible state. Using a computer model, we show that such systems exhibit self-organized criticality when a finite particle sedimentation velocity vs is introduced. Under periodic shear, these systems evolve, without external intervention, towards the shear-dependent critical concentration ϕc as vs is reduced. This state is characterized by power-law distributions in the lifetime and size of fluctuating clusters. Experiments exhibit similar behavior and, as vs is reduced, …
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A mathematical model for the evolution of pulsed laser-irradiated, molten metallic films has been developed using the lubrication theory. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single laser beam or the interfering laser beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the reflectivity, the peak laser beam …

Pair Creation Rates For One-Dimensional Fermionic And Bosonic Vacua, T Cheng, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe
Faculty publications – Physics
We compare the creation rates for particle-antiparticle pairs produced by a supercritical force field for fermionic and bosonic model systems. The rates obtained from the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations can be computed directly from the quantum-mechanical transmission coefficients describing the scattering of an incoming particle with the supercritical potential barrier. We provide a unified framework that shows that the bosonic rates can exceed the fermionic ones, as one could expect from the Pauli-exclusion principle for the fermion system. This imbalance for small but supercritical forces is associated with the occurrence of negative bosonic transmission coefficients of arbitrary size for the …

Ionization of an atom by a few-cycle attosecond xuv pulse is analyzed using perturbation theory (PT), keeping terms in the transition amplitude up to second order in the pulse electric field. Within the PT approach, we present an ab initio parametrization of the ionized electron angular distribution (AD) using rotational invariance and symmetry arguments. This parametrization gives analytically the dependence of the AD on the carrier envelope phase (CEP), the polarization of the pulse, and on the ionized electron momentum direction, p^ . For the general case of an elliptically polarized pulse, we show that interference of the first- and …

This work reports strong correlations between the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of room temperature ferromagnets (RTFM) Sn1-xCoxO2 and Sn1-xCrxO2 for x = 0 to 0.1. The samples prepared by the sol-gel chemical method show RTFM for x < xL with the limiting concentration xL = 0.01 for Co doping and xL = 0.025 for Cr doping. As doping level x is increased from x = 0, the magnetic moment per ion, μ, increases and the lattice volume VL decreases up to x = xL. …

High-frequency (236 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of Fe3+ ions at 255 K are reported in a Sn1-xFexO2 powder with x = 0.005, which is a ferromagnetic semiconductor at room temperature. The observed EPR spectrum can be simulated reasonably well as the overlap of spectra due to four magnetically inequivalent high-spin (HS) Fe3+ ions (S = 5/2). The spectrum intensity is calculated, using the overlap I(BL) + (I(HS1) + I(HS2) + I(HS3) + I(HS4)) 9 x e-0.00001xB, where B is the magnetic field intensity …
Morphology Of The Dayside Ionosphere Of Mars: Implications For Ion Outflows, Jane L. Fox
Morphology Of The Dayside Ionosphere Of Mars: Implications For Ion Outflows, Jane L. Fox
Physics Faculty Publications
Significant fluxes of tailward streaming ions have been detected in the Martian wake by instruments on spacecraft. Imposing outward fluxes at the top of a model will produce dayside ion density profiles that are characterized by smaller scale heights than those of diffusive equilibrium. We determine the maximum outward fluxes of ions, and those implied by radio occultation data, by constructing ∼180 models, with upward velocity boundary conditions in the range from 0 to (7–8) × 105 cm s−1 in small increments. As the upward velocity is increased, the topside ion or electron densities decrease until eventually the …

Nonlinear Evolution Of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations From Improved Perturbation Theory In Real And Redshift Spaces, Atsushi Taruya, Takahiro Nishimichi, Shun Saito, Takashi Hiramatsu

We study the nonlinear evolution of baryon acoustic oscillations in the matter power spectrum and correlation function from the improved perturbation theory (PT). Based on the framework of renormalized PT, which provides a nonperturbative way to treat the gravitational clustering of large-scale structure, we apply the closure approximation that truncates the infinite series of loop contributions at one-loop order, and obtain a closed set of integral equations for power spectrum and nonlinear propagator. The resultant integral expressions are basically equivalent to those previously derived in the form of evolution equations, and they keep important nonperturbative properties which can dramatically improve …

We report on an experimental and theoretical systematic study of double ionization of helium by ion impact in terms of four-particle Dalitz plots. Several collision systems covering abroad range of perturbation parameters η (projectile charge to speed ratio) were investigated. With increasing η we observe a systematic trend from features, characteristic to correlated double-ionization mechanisms, to signatures of higher-order processes not requiring electron-electron correlations [the mechanism called "two-step-two projectile-electron interaction" (TS-2)]. The data for the largest η can qualitatively be amazingly well described by a simple model only including the TS-2 mechanism.

Events with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb-1. The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e+p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100GeV while 1.94 ± 0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e-p collisions for which 1.19 ± 0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in …

The J/ψ decay angular distributions have been measured in inelastic photo-production in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb-1. The range in photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, W, was 50 < W < 180 GeV. The J/ψ mesons were identified through their decay into muon pairs. The polar and azimuthal angles of the μ+ were measured in the J/ψ rest frame and compared to theoretical predictions at leading and next-to-leading order in QCD. © SISSA 2009.
Investigation Of Velocity Profiles In Anatomically Realistic Renal Artery Flow Phantoms By Physiological Flow Experimentation, Deepa Chari
Masters
Renal Artery stenosis is one of the major causes of curable renovascular hypertension. An early investigation of renal artery stenosis helps in the management of renovascular hypertension by alternative, less-invasive methods such as drug treatments, thereby reducing the risk involved in the surgery. Therefore an early investigation of renal artery stenosis has been always an attractive goal for the physicians. The renal artery stenosis affects the blood velocity profile in the renal artery. These profiles can be investigated by quantitative Doppler Ultrasound measurements obtained by flow experimentations and can be used as a tool for the identification of renal artery stenosis. …
Four-Body Model For Transfer Excitation, Allison L. Harris, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, James Colgan
Four-Body Model For Transfer Excitation, Allison L. Harris, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, James Colgan
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present here a four-body model for transfer-excitation collisions, which we call the four-body transfer-excitation (4BTE) model. Each two-body interaction is explicitly included in the 4BTE model, allowing us to study the effects of individual two-body interactions. We apply our model to fully differential cross sections for proton+helium collisions, and study the effect of the incident projectile-atom interaction, the scattered projectile-ion interaction, the projectile-nuclear interaction, and electron correlation within the target atom.

A number of previous studies have suggested the possibility of two-center interference effects in the single ionization of diatomic molecules such as H2 and N2. While interference effects have been successfully observed in the ionization of H2, to date evidence for interference in N2 ionization has yet to be conclusively demonstrated. This study presents triply differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of N2, measured using the (e,2e) technique. The data are probed for signatures of two-center interference effects. Evidence for interference manifesting in the cross sections is observed.
Constructing A Magneto-Optical Trap For Cold Atom Trapping, Eric S. Muckley
Constructing A Magneto-Optical Trap For Cold Atom Trapping, Eric S. Muckley
Physics
A magneto-optical trap, or MOT, is a device that traps atoms between three pairs of opposing perpendicular laser beams for cooling the atoms to temperatures near absolute zero. The MOT uses Doppler cooling and a magnetic quadrupole field to trap the atoms; in our case, Rb87 atoms. In the future, the MOT will be used in experiments pertaining to the advancement of quantum computing. In this paper, I explain some of the processes required for construction and operation of the MOT.

Developing A B-Jet Tagging Algorithm For Alice: Lessons From Cdf, Paul Chester-John Carlson
Physics
This paper compares the detectors and algorithms developed and used at both A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) and the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We found that the detectors share many similarities in data collection and analysis methods and that by adapting algorithms that have been tested and used at CDF, ALICE could augment its existing algorithms. The algorithms formed from this adaptation will help ALICE isolate b-jets quickly and explore the quark-gluon plasma, ultimately expanding our understanding of the strong nuclear force and its role in the evolution of our universe.

Localized surface plasmons resonances (LSPRs) in metallic nanoparticles (NPs) arise from the interactions between incident light and conduction electrons and have attracted enormous research interest in recent years both for their fundamental nature as well as applications in interdisciplinary areas of sciences such as biological imaging, plasmonic photo-thermal therapy, photovoltaics, and plasmonic sensors. LSPRs are strongly localized and depend on the shape, size, the composition of the NPs, the polarization direction of the incident light, refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium as well as on the chemical environment that surrounded NPs. Although significant research has progressed both theoretically and …
Light Beaming From A Single Subwavelength Metal Slit, Pengyu Chen
Light Beaming From A Single Subwavelength Metal Slit, Pengyu Chen
All Theses
In this thesis, light transmission through a single sub-wavelength slit in a silver thin film with periodic gratings at the exit side of the slit has been studied in both the visible and mid-infrared wavelength ranges.
In the visible wavelength range, we first investigate the enhancement of plasmonic light beaming efficiency by near field resonance in a subwavelength metallic slit-groove beaming structure. We show that by varying the film thickness and the separation distance of the beaming grating, the intensity of the near field can be greatly enhanced by resonance, which leads to the increase of the beaming efficiency. Moreover, …

The semi-inclusive reaction e+p→e+Xp was studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 12.8 pb -1. The final-state proton, which was detected with the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer, carried a large fraction of the incoming proton energy, xL > 0.32, and its transverse momentum squared satisfied p 2T < 0.5GeV2; the exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, was greater than 3GeV2 and the range of the masses of the photon-proton system was 45 < W < 225GeV. The leading proton production cross section and rates are presented as a function of xL, p2 T , Q2 and the Bjorken scaling variable, x. © SISSA 2009.

In the initial portion of this dissertation studies of Ar
scattering from Ru(0001) at thermal and hyperthermal energies are
compared to calculations with classical scattering theory. These
data exhibited a number of characteristics that are unusual in
comparison to other systems for which atomic beam experiments have
been carried out under similar conditions. The measured energy
losses were unusually small. Some of the angular distributions
exhibited an anomalous shoulder feature in addition to a broad
peak near the specular direction and quantum mechanical
diffraction was observed under conditions for which it was not
expected. Many of the unusual features observed …

The dipole-dipole interaction among ultracold Rydberg atoms is simulated. We examine a general interaction scheme in which two atoms excited to the x and x states are converted to y and y states via a Förster resonance. The atoms are arranged in two spatially separated groups, each consisting of only one species of atom. We monitor the state mixing by recording the fraction of atoms excited to the y state as the distance between the two groups is varied. With zero detuning a many-body effect that relies on always resonant interactions causes the state mixing to have a finite range. …

From the cross sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken x and the virtuality, Q 2, the proton structure functions F L and F 2 have been extracted in the region 5 × 10 - 4 < x < 0.007 and 20 < Q 2 < 130 GeV 2. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.

Ballistic-Ohmic Quantum Hall Plateau Transition In A Graphene P-N Junction, Tony Low

Recent quantum Hall experiments conducted on disordered graphene p-n junction provide evidence that the junction resistance could be described by a simple Ohmic sum of the n and p mediums’ resistances. However in the ballistic limit, theory predicts the existence of chirality-dependent quantum Hall plateaus in a p-n junction. We show that two distinctively separate processes are required for this ballistic-Ohmic plateau transition, namely, (i) hole/electron Landau states mixing and (ii) valley isospin dilution of the incident Landau edge state. These conclusions are obtained by a simple scattering theory argument, and confirmed numerically by performing ensembles of quantum magnetotransport calculations …

We follow a low-energy effective theory approach to identify the general class of theories that describes a vector field (of unconstrained norm) coupled to gravity. The resulting set may be regarded as a generalization of the conventional vector-tensor theories, and as a high-momentum completion of aether models. We study the conditions that a viable cosmology, Newtonian limit and absence of classical and quantum instabilities impose on the parameters of our class of models, and compare these constraints with those derived in previously studied and related cases. The most stringent conditions arise from the quantum stability of the theory, which allows …

We construct and evolve three one-parameter families and one two-parameter family of steady-state models of stellar disks embedded in live dark matter (DM) halos in order to study the dynamical and secular phases of bar evolution. These models are tested against those published in the literature in order to extend them and to include the gaseous component in the follow-up paper. Specifically, we are interested in the angular momentum, J, redistribution in the disk-halo system during these two evolutionary phases without distinguishing between the resonant and non-resonant effects. We confirm the previous results and quantify for the first time …
