We examine the issue of magnetic charge quantization in the presence of black holes. It is pointed out that quantization of magnetic charge can lead to the mass quantization for magnetically charged black holes. We also discuss some implications for the experimental searches of magnetically charged black holes.

The structural and electronic properties of nickeland phosphorus-doped boron–carbon (B5C) alloy thin films grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition have been examined. The Ni-doped boron–carbon alloys were grown using closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (C2B10H12) as the boron–carbon source compound and nickelocene (Ni(C5H5)2) as the nickel source. The phosphorus-doped alloys were grown using the single-source compound: dimeric chloro-phospha(III)-carborane ([C2B10H10PCl] 2). Nickel doping increased the conductivity, relative to undoped B5C, by six orders of magnitude from 10-9 to 10-3 …

We have performed the first search for CP violation in tau lepton decay. CP violation in lepton decay does not occur in the minimal standard model but can occur in extensions such as the multi- Higgs doublet model. It appears as a characteristic difference between the τ- and τ+ decay angular distributions for the semileptonic decay modes such as τ- → K0 π-ν. We define an observable asymmetry to exploit this and find no evidence for any CP violation.

We have studied the two-center effect (TCE) in ion-atom ionization by measuring the energy and angular distributions of the double-differential cross sections (DDCSs) (d2σ/dεdΩ) of the low-energy electrons emitted in a collision of He atoms with 2.5 MeV/nucleon C6+ ions. The electrons with energies between 0.1 and 300 eV were detected for 13 different emission angles between 15° and 160°. From the measured DDCSs we have deduced the single differential cross sections such as dσ/dΩ and dσ/dε and the total cross section. The data have been …

We present solitary-wave solutions of two and three coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations when the waves propagate in the normal and anomalous group-velocity dispersion regions. A wave of the form sech2 £-2/3 is found, which, together with two known waves of the forms tanh £ sech £ and sech2 £, are shown to form a new generation of complementary waves. The implication of this wave set and its applications to coupled solitary-wave propagation is discussed.

We have developed a compact closed-form solution of the band transport model for high-contrast gratings in photogalvanic crystals. Our solution predicts the effect of the photoconductivity and the electric field grating enhancement due to the photogalvanic effect. We predict a pronounced dependence of the steady-state photogalvanic current on the contrast of the interference pattern and an increase of holographic storage time due to the enhancement of the photoconductivity grating contrast. In the high contrast limit and a large photogalvanic effect the refractive index grating will be shifted from the position of the intensity modulation pattern, contrary to the usually adopted …

Unidirectional magnetic anisotropies in low-symmetry magnetic thin films such as cobalt on vicinal copper surfaces are investigated. Possible explanations of the observed uniaxial anisotropies are competing anisotropy (CA) coefficients and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Unidirectional CA is an interesting mechanism occurring in low-symmetry magnets and involves neither antiferromagnetic exchange nor spin canting. It is visible in the easy-cone regime and decides, for example, whether the preferential magnetization direction points up or down a stepped surface. In the case of Co/Cu(11n) films, however, the anisotropy direction speaks in favor of DM-type interactions.

Specific solvent effects on the electronic coupling element for electron transfer are examined using two model donor–acceptor systems (Zn2+ and Li2+) and several model “solvent” species (He, Ne, H2O, and NH3). The effects are evaluated relative to the given donor–acceptor pair without solvent present. The electronic coupling element (Hab) is found to depend strongly on the identity of the intervening solvent, with He atoms decreasing Hab, whereas H2O and NH3 significantly increase Hab. The distance dependence (essentially exponential decay) is weakly affected by a single intervening solvent atom–molecule. However, when the donor–acceptor distance increases in concert with addition of successively …

Singly and multiply charged ion yield curves are reported for resonant and nonresonant two photon- ionization processes for a collection of 31 metal atoms. The atoms are created by sputtering from a solid target using an Ar-ion gun. Single and multiple ionization of these atoms is performed using linearly polarized 248.6-nm (KrF) laser pulses with a full width at half maximum duration of 500 fs, employing intensities between 109 and 1012 W cm-2. A four-grid high-resolution reflecting time-of-flight spectrometer is used for ion detection. This advanced spectrometer has a well-defined and small source volume, enabling absolute …

Parity nonconservation was studied for 23 p-wave resonances in 113Cd up to En=500eV at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source using a longitudinally polarized neutron beam and the time-of-flight method. The helicity dependence of the total neutron capture cross section was measured with an enriched 113Cd target and with a target of natural cadmium. Parity violating effects were observed for several resonances in 113Cd and 111Cd. A root-mean-square value of the parity nonconserving matrix element MJ=1=2.9-0.9+1.3meV was obtained for the spin J=1 levels in the compound nucleus 114Cd. This …

Using a realistic model for line emission from the broad emission line regions of quasars, we are able to reproduce the previously observed correlations of emission-line ratios with the shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED). In agreement with previous studies, we find that the primary driving force behind the Baldwin effect (Wλ ~ Lβ, β < 0) is a global change in the SED with quasar luminosity, in that more luminous quasars must have characteristically softer ionizing continua. This is completely consistent with observations that show (1) a correlation between Luv, αox, and αuvx (2) correlations of SED shape-sensitive line ratios with αox, αuvx, and Luv; and (3) correlations between line equivalent widths and αox, αuvx …

A simple model is described for predicting the time evolution of the half-width h of a mixing layer between two initially separated immiscible fluids of different density subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history a(t). The model is based on a heuristic expression for the kinetic energy per unit area of the mixing layer. This expression is based on that for the kinetic energy of a linearly perturbed interface, but with a dynamically renormalized wavelength which becomes proportional to h in the nonlinear regime. An equation of motion for h is then derived from Lagrange's equations. This model reproduces …

Inelastic and superelastic electron scattering from the optically prepared 32P3/2 state of sodium has enabled atomic collision parameters to be deduced for the 4S-3P deexcitation and the 3S-3P excitation processes. These data are compared with convergent close coupling and second order distorted wave Born calculations. For excitation, both theories agree with experiment, whereas for deexcitation the close coupling theory is in better agreement. A long-standing proposal relating to the sign of the transferred angular momentum is not supported.

We investigate the influence of electron-electron interactions on the conductance of two-dimensional disordered spinless electrons. We present an efficient numerical method based on diagonalization in a truncated basis of Hartree-Fock states to determine with high accuracy the low-energy properties in the entire parameter space. We find that weak interactions increase the dc conductance in the strongly localized regime while they decrease the dc conductance for weak disorder. Strong interactions always decrease the conductance. We also study the localization of single-particle excitations at the Fermi energy which turns out to be only weakly influenced by the interactions.

In this paper we describe a search for four radiative decay modes of the D0 meson: D0 → φγ, D0 → ωγ, D0 → K-*γ, and D0 → ρ0γ . We obtain 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of 1.9 X 10-4, 2.4 X 10-4, 7.6 X 10-4, and 2.4 X 10-4, respectively.

We examine the inverse problem of determining the shape of some unknown portion of the boundary of a region Ω from measurements of the Cauchy data for solutions to the heat equation on Ω. By suitably linearizing the inverse problem we obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence results. We propose an algorithm for recovering estimates of the unknown portion of the surface and use the insight gained from a detailed analysis of the inverse problem to regularize the inversion. Several computational examples are presented.

The transport of photoinjected charges in disordered organic films is often interpreted using a formula based on a Gaussian disorder model (GDM) that neglects spatial correlations due to charge-dipole interactions, even though such correlations have recently been shown to explain the universal electric field dependence observed in these systems. Based on extensive computer simulations of a 3D disorder model that includes such correlations, we present a new formula for analyzing experiments that accurately describes transport in these materials.

A gas-phase time-of-flight (TOF) apparatus, capable of supporting as many as six electron-TOF analyzers viewing the same interaction region, has been developed to measure energy- and angle-resolved electrons with kinetic energies up to 5 keV. Each analyzer includes a newly designed lens system that can retard electrons to about 2% of their initial kinetic energy without significant loss of transmission; the analyzers can thus achieve a resolving power (E/ΔE) greater than 104 over a wide kinetic-energy range. Such high resolving power is comparable to the photon energy resolution of state-of-the-art synchrotron–radiation beamlines in the soft …

The relaxation dynamics of HCl, DCl, H2S, and D2S following photoexcitation in the vicinities of the Cl and S K-shell thresholds (∼2.8keV for Cl, ∼2.5 keV for S) were studied by means of ion time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. In all cases, the onset of pre-edge core-shell photoionization precedes the formation on resonance of a significant amount of neutral hydrogen as well as postcollision-interaction effects above threshold. Examination of the width of the H+ peak in spectra taken with the analyzer parallel and perpendicular to the polarization vector of the incident light indicates that on resonance, the …

Relative integral cross sections for rotational excitation of CO in collisions with He were measured at energies of 72 and 89 meV. The cross sections are sensitive to anisotrophy in the repulsive wall of the He-CO interaction. The experiments were done in crossed molecular beams with resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization detection. The observed cross sections display interference structure at low Δj, despite the average over the initial CO rotational distribution. At higher Δj, the cross sections decrease smoothly. Methane emissions from rice fields are affected by a number of environmental and agricultural factors. We have analyzed our 7-year data set on methane emissions from rice fields in Tu Zu, China, to delineate the relationships between emissions and a number of variables that were measured at the same time. Our work was done in fields that were managed under prevailing agricultural practices of the region. Consequently, only the effect of factors that vary from year to year or during the growing season can be calculated. The emissions of methane from rice fields and other sources are often measured by placing chambers on the surface and taking sequential samples. Although static chambers pose several problems that affect the accuracy of the data, there are a few parameters that, if carefully chosen, can improve the reliability of the data and reduce the uncertainties. The emission of methane from rice fields is the difference between the amount produced in the anaerobic zone below the soil and the amount oxidized in the root zone. Plants can also contribute to methane production by exuding organic compounds that may be utilized by methanogenic bacteria. We measured methane emissions from rice fields at Tu Zu in China between 1988 and 1994, which gave average emissions of about 30 mg m⁻² h⁻¹. We estimate that 45-60% of the methane produced was oxidized before reaching the atmosphere; and root exudates may have contributed of the order of 10% of the …

Rice fields have always been regarded as one of the largest anthropogenic sources of atmospheric methane. Here we report the results of a 7-year study of methane emissions from rice fields in the Sichuan Province of China. In this region, there is one crop of rice per year, the fields are continuously flooded from transplanting to harvest, and there is heavy use of organic fertilizers. Emissions over the entire growing season were measured from each of up to 24 plots. Environmental variables were measured and relevant supporting data on the agricultural practices were recorded. The main purpose of this chapter is to review our calculations, whose aim is to explain the target dependence of the triply differential cross sections that has been observed in a number of recent experiments performed at relatively low energies above the ionization threshold for the two outgoing electrons leaving in opposite directions (θ12 = π). One reason for focusing on this θ12 = π geometry is that it is the most important geometry for near-threshold double-escape processes in the WPR theory. We compute the expectations of the squares of the electric and magnetic fields in the vacuum region outside a half-space filled with a uniform non-dispersive dielectric. This gives predictions for the Casimir-Polder force on an atom in the "retarded" regime near a dielectric. We also find a positive energy density due to the electromagnetic field. This would lead, in the case of two parallel dielectric half-spaces, to a positive, separation-independent contribution to the energy density, besides the negative, separation-dependent Casimir energy. Rough estimates suggest that for a very wide range of cases, perhaps including all realizable ones, the total energy …

The classical trajectory Monte Carlo method has been used to calculate capture and ionization cross sections and final-state electron momentum distributions in H+ + H(n = 25) collisions to show how the collision mechanisms evolve over the range of intermediate projectile speeds v* = vp/ve = 1.0-5.0. A circular Rydberg target was aligned in two orientations defined by the orbital angular momentum vector of the electron being either antiparallel or perpendicular to the incident momentum vector of the projectile. Aligning the target atom in this manner helps us to single out specific collision processes otherwise obscured in a randomly oriented …
