A Statistical Study Of Plasmawaves And Energetic Particles In The Outer Magnetosphere, Kyungguk Min May 2013

A Statistical Study Of Plasmawaves And Energetic Particles In The Outer Magnetosphere, Kyungguk Min

Dissertations

The Earth magnetosphere contains energetic particles undergoing specific motions around Earth’s magnetic field, and interacting with a variety of waves. The dynamics of energetic particles are often described in terms of three kinds of adiabatic invariants. Energetic electrons are often unstable to the whistler-mode chorus waves, and ions, to the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) instability. These waves play an important role in the dynamics of the magnetosphere by energizing electrons to form a radiation belt, extracting energy from the hot, anisotropic ions and causing pitch angle scattering of energetic ions and relativistic electrons into the loss cone. EMIC waves correspond …

The confluence of nanotechnology and plasmonics has led to new and interesting phenomena. The industrial need for fast, efficient and miniature devices which constantly push the boundaries on device performance tap into the happy marriage between these diverse fields. Designing devices for real life application that give superior performance when compared with existing ones are enabled by a better understanding of their structure-property relationships. Among all the design constraints, without doubt, the shape and size of the nanostructure along with the dielectric medium surrounding it has the maximum influence on the response and thereby the performance of the device. Hence …

Extension To Pv Optics To Include Front Electrode Design In Solar Cells, Debraj Guhabiswas Jan 2013

Extension To Pv Optics To Include Front Electrode Design In Solar Cells, Debraj Guhabiswas

Dissertations

Proper optical designing of solar cells and modules is of paramount importance towards achieving high photovoltaic conversion efficiencies. Modeling softwares such as PV OPTICS, BIRANDY and SUNRAYS have been created to aid such optical designing of cells and modules; but none of these modeling packages take the front metal electrode architecture of a solar cell into account.

A new model, has been developed to include the front metal electrode architecture to finished solar cells for optical calculations. This has been implemented in C++ in order to add a new module to PV OPTICS (NREL’s photovoltaic modeling tool) to include …

Theoretical Studies Of Structural And Electronic Properties In Transition Metal Oxides, Tsezar F. Seman

Dissertations

The following studies are presented: theory of K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and its application for La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, effects of rare earth ion size on the stability of the coherent Jahn-Teller distortions in undoped perovskite manganites, and symmetry-mode-based classical and quantum mechanical formalism of lattice dynamics.

The formula based on tight-binding approach for the calculation of K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum for transition metal oxides is presented first, by extending the previous existing result to include explicit momentum dependence and a basis with multiple core-hole sites. This formula is applied to layered charge, …

Handel's Maser-Soliton Theory Of Ball Lightning: The Creation Of Stable Three-Dimensional Cavitons By An Atmospheric Maser Within An Open Resonator, Glenn Andrew Carlson Jan 2013

Handel's Maser-Soliton Theory Of Ball Lightning: The Creation Of Stable Three-Dimensional Cavitons By An Atmospheric Maser Within An Open Resonator, Glenn Andrew Carlson

Dissertations

This dissertation develops details of Handel’s Maser-Soliton Theory of ball lightning. The atmosphere between a thundercloud and the Earth’s surface is modeled as an idealized stable open resonator with water vapor as the active medium and the thundercloud and Earth’s surface as reflecting surfaces. The stable resonator generates a maser beam that narrows to the beam waist at the Earth’s surface, which is assumed to be planar. Two candidate rotational transitions are identified within the v1v2v3 = 010 vibrational band of water having wavelengths of 13.9 cm and 1.12 cm, and relevant spectroscopic parameters are retrieved from the HITRAN 2008 …

Microstructure, Vacancies And Voids In Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon, Rajendra Timilsina Dec 2012

Microstructure, Vacancies And Voids In Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon, Rajendra Timilsina

Dissertations

This dissertation presents a theoretical and computational study of microstructure, vacancies and voids in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The microstructure consists of all possible silicon-hydrogen bonding configurations such as SiH, SiH2, SiH3 and SiH4. However, it is highly dominated (approximately 75% or even more) by monohydride (SiH) configurations. Furthermore, the hydrogen atoms locate in both clustered and diluted phases; as a result, the distribution becomes highly inhomogeneous. Approximately 5% of hydrogen atoms reside in a form of isolated monohydrides at the lower (7 at.%) concentration whereas such configurations do not appear at the higher concentrations …

Radiative Double Electron Capture In Collisions Of Fully-Stripped Fluorine Ions With Thin Carbon Foils, Tamer Mohammad Samy Elkafrawy Dec 2012

Radiative Double Electron Capture In Collisions Of Fully-Stripped Fluorine Ions With Thin Carbon Foils, Tamer Mohammad Samy Elkafrawy

Dissertations

Radiative double electron capture (RDEC) is a one-step process in ion-atom collisions occurring when two target electrons are captured to a bound state of the projectile simultaneously with the emission of a single photon. The emitted photon has approximately double the energy of the photon emitted due to radiative electron capture (REC), which occurs when a target electron is captured to a projectile bound state with simultaneous emission of a photon. REC and RDEC can be treated as timereversed photoionization (PI) and double photoionization (DPI), respectively, if loosely-bound target electrons are captured. This concept can be formulated with the principle …

Reification: A Process To Configure Java Realtime Processors, John Huddleston Heath Dec 2012

Reification: A Process To Configure Java Realtime Processors, John Huddleston Heath

Dissertations

Real-time systems require stringent requirements both on the processor and the software application. The primary concern is speed and the predictability of execution times. In all real-time applications the developer must identify and calculate the worst case execution times (WCET) of their software. In almost all cases the processor design complexity impacts the analysis when calculating the WCET. Design features which impact this analysis include cache and instruction pipelining. With both cache and pipelining the time taken for a particular instruction can vary depending on cache and pipeline contents. When calculating the WCET the developer must ignore the speed advantages …

The Characterization Of Volatiles Associated With Young Stellar Objects, Kari Anne Wojtkowski Nov 2012

The Characterization Of Volatiles Associated With Young Stellar Objects, Kari Anne Wojtkowski

Dissertations

In the first portion of this work, we searched for differences in volatiles within a single star forming region, Rho Ophiuchi. We determined the amount, temperature, and composition of two ice features, the bending modes of CO2 and H2O at 15 μm and 6 μm, respectively, toward 28 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We found that more than 50% of the YSOs studied contained a portion of crystalline CO2 ice. We also found that some sources with Flat or borderline Class II Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) have a larger abundance of CO2 ice with respect to H2O ice. In addition to …

Modeling Transmission Of Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes Enhanced By Kerr Nonlinearity, Buddhi M. Rai Aug 2012

Modeling Transmission Of Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes Enhanced By Kerr Nonlinearity, Buddhi M. Rai

Dissertations

Nonlinear modes of electromagnetic fields propagating in photonic crystal systems have been studied by implementing various computer simulation techniques using electromagnetic theory. The fundamentals of simulation of photonic crystals are analyzed using general purpose methodologies such as the FDTD or PWE methods. Information derived from the underlying physical insights into the systems could be utilized to describe the control mechanisms over the propagation of the modes around impurities in the photonic crystal lattice. The impurities trap the resonantly localized electromagnetic modes having a frequency in a stop band of the photonic crystal, suggesting novel optical controls in the photonic crystal …

Study Of The Structure Of 9C Via Single Neutron Transfer, Scott T. Marley Jun 2012

Study Of The Structure Of 9C Via Single Neutron Transfer, Scott T. Marley

Dissertations

This thesis describes a study of the nucleus 9C, produced in the single-neutron transfer reaction d(10C, t) 9C using a radioactive 10C beam. The structure of the neutron-deficient nucleus 9C is poorly known. Only a few excited states have been observed and no information exists of their single-particle characteristics. The measured ground-state magnetic dipole moment of 9C is anomalously small and could imply large contributions from sd-shell orbitals in the ground-state wave function. The positions of the 9C excited states and their single-particle properties are vital to furthering the …

Analysis Of Mueller Matrices Of Metamaterials And Multiferroics, Paul D. Rogers May 2011

Analysis Of Mueller Matrices Of Metamaterials And Multiferroics, Paul D. Rogers

Dissertations

The optical spectra of complex materials such as magnetic-dielectric media, magnetoelectric and multiferroic crystals, materials with intrinsic chirality, and metamaterials are studied. These media are important both for: (i) their interesting optical effects, such as Negative Index of Refraction (NIR) and impedance matching; and (ii) possible device applications such as switching devices and anti-reflection coatings. Proper characterization of complex materials requires advanced spectroscopic approaches and the development of theoretical models for data analysis. Berreman’s 4´4 matrix formalism is used to derive forward models for the optical spectra of Reflectivity, Transmission, Rotating Analyzer Ellipsometry (RAE), and Mueller Matrices (MM). The forward …

Modeling Of Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly, Rene David Rivero Jan 2011

The MFDSA approach offers the ability to check and correct errors in real-time and is capable of scalable, versatile, and high-yield integration.

Devices, coated with a layer of soft magnetic material, are moved from initial to final positions along predetermined pathways through the action of …

Radio-Derived Three-Dimensional Structure Of A Solar Active Region, Samuel D. Tun Jan 2011

Radio-Derived Three-Dimensional Structure Of A Solar Active Region, Samuel D. Tun

Dissertations

Solar active regions are the source of the most violent events observed on the Sun, some of which have a direct impact to modern civilization. Efforts to understand and predict such events require determination of the three-dimensional distributions of density, temperature, and magnetic fields above such active regions. This thesis presents the structure of the solar atmosphere above active region AR 10923, observed on 2006 Nov 10, as deduced from multi-wavelength studies including combined microwave observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA). The VLA observations provide excellent image quality at a few widely …

Electron Transmission Characteristics And The Production Of Narrow Beams Using Glass Optics, Buddhika Senarath Dassanayake Jan 2011

Electron Transmission Characteristics And The Production Of Narrow Beams Using Glass Optics, Buddhika Senarath Dassanayake

Dissertations

Transmission of electrons through an insulating single cylindrically-shaped glass capillary of microscopic dimension has been investigated. Samples made with Borosilicate glass (PYREX 7740) were subjected to bombardment of 300-1000 eV electrons. Transmitted electrons were analyzed using a parallel-plate spectrometer coupled to a channel electron multiplier.

The transmitted electron intensity was found to decrease with increasing sample tilt angle relative to the direction of the primary beam. Two regions of transmission were found: direct where there is no interaction of the beam with the inner capillary wall, and indirect where the beam does interact with the wall. The rate of transmission …

Relativistic R-Matrix Theory, Janina Grineviciute Jan 2011

Relativistic R-Matrix Theory, Janina Grineviciute

Dissertations

We have developed a relativistic coupled{channel reaction theory in which binary break-up channels satisfy a relative Dirac equation. This theory is developed by extending the R-matrix formalism of Lane and Thomas to the relativistic case and implementing the Dirac oscillator basis. The motivation for this project is testing po- tentials for the dense matter calculations and generating relativistic wave functions for the nal states in the knockout reactions. As an example of the formalism we have calculated observables for the proton scattering on light-to-medium weight nuclei in the relativistic impulse approximation using the relativistic Love-Franey amplitudes of Horowitz. The R-matrix …

Commissioning Of The Helical Orbit Spectrometer: A New Device For Measuring Nuclear Reactions In Inverse Kinematics, Jonathan C. Lighthall Jan 2011

Commissioning Of The Helical Orbit Spectrometer: A New Device For Measuring Nuclear Reactions In Inverse Kinematics, Jonathan C. Lighthall

Dissertations

The Helical Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at Argonne National Laboratory is the first implementation of a radical new concept for measuring nuclear reactions. Direct nuclear transfer reactions are powerful tools for studying the properties of the atomic nucleus. A traditional example is the neutron-transfer reaction (d ,p), wherein an accelerated beam of deuterons d bombards a heavy target. The incoming deuteron transfers a neutron to the target nucleus and the outgoing proton p is detected to study the properties of the residual heavy nucleus. A new frontier of nuclear reaction studies involving short-lived exotic nuclei—which are unsuitable for use …

Proton Capture Reactions And Network Calculations On 46Ti, 64Zn, 114Sn And 116Sn Relevant To The Rp-Process, Ravin S. T. Kodikara Dec 2010

Proton Capture Reactions And Network Calculations On 46Ti, 64Zn, 114Sn And 116Sn Relevant To The Rp-Process, Ravin S. T. Kodikara

Dissertations

The rp-process makes an important contribution to the stellar nucleosynthesis by producing many of the light proton rich nuclei. Successive proton captures on seed nuclei followed by occasional β-decays and electron captures are the key features of this mechanism. For a detailed rp-process analysis, proton capture cross sections and reaction rates are essential. However, the lack of experimental data forces the researcher to largely depend on statistical model predictions.

This dissertation research is an attempt to investigate the proton captures of four particular nuclides; 46Ti, 64Zn, 114Sn and 116Sn. At Western Michigan University Van de Graaff …

Dielectronic Recombination For Aluminum-Like Ions And Photoabsorption Cross Sections For Magnesium Ions At The K-Edge, Shahin Ahmed Abdel-Azim Abdel Naby Dec 2010

Dielectronic Recombination For Aluminum-Like Ions And Photoabsorption Cross Sections For Magnesium Ions At The K-Edge, Shahin Ahmed Abdel-Azim Abdel Naby

Dissertations

Accurate and reliable recombination data are needed for modeling the ions in the finitedensity plasmas that may take place in solar flares and in divertors of magnetically confined fusion devices such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Dielectronic recombination (DR) is the dominant recombination mechanism in photoionized and collisionally-ionized plasmas. DR rate coefficients for M-shell argon ions have been calculated using a configuration-average approach. DR rate coefficients for the aluminumlike isoelectronic sequence are instead calculated using the state-of-the-art multiconfiguration Breit-Pauli (MCBP) atomic structure and collision code AUTOSTRUCTURE. Good agreement is obtained with the measurements from the Heidelberg heavy-ion Test …

Study Of Magnetic Helicity In Solar Active Regions And Its Relationship With Solar Eruptions, Sung-Hong Park Aug 2010

Study Of Magnetic Helicity In Solar Active Regions And Its Relationship With Solar Eruptions, Sung-Hong Park

Dissertations

It is generally believed that eruptive phenomena in the solar atmosphere such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) occur in solar active regions with complex magnetic structures. The magnetic complexity is quantified in terms of twists, kinks, and interlinkages of magnetic field lines. Magnetic helicity has been recognized as a useful measure for these properties of a given magnetic field system. Magnetic helicity studies have been naturally directed to the energy buildup and instability leading to solar eruptions. However, in spite of many years of study, detailed aspects of initiation mechanisms of eruptive events are still not well …

Studies Of Meson Mass Spectra In The Context Of Quark-Antiquark Bound States, Mallika Dhar Aug 2010

Studies Of Meson Mass Spectra In The Context Of Quark-Antiquark Bound States, Mallika Dhar

Dissertations

This dissertation deals with the computation of meson mass spectra in the context of quarkantiquark (q ¯ q) bound-state. Traditionally the q ¯ q bound-state problem is treated by solving the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation in position representation with a linear confining potential and a Coulomb-like attractive potential. For high energy, relativistic kinematics is necessary. It is well known that relativistic kinematics cannot be treated properly in position representation, but it can easily be handled in momentum representation. On the other hand, the linear potential and Coulomb-like potential have singularities in momentum-space and complicated subtraction procedure is necessary to treat the …

Relativistic Studies Of The Charmonium And Bottomonium Systems Using The Sucher Equation, Charles Martin Werneth Aug 2010

Relativistic Studies Of The Charmonium And Bottomonium Systems Using The Sucher Equation, Charles Martin Werneth

Dissertations

In this dissertation, bound states of quarks and anti-quarks (mesons) are studied with a relativistic equation known as the Sucher equation. Prior to the work in this dissertation, the Sucher equation had never been used for meson mass spectra. Furthermore, a full angular momentum analysis of the Sucher equation has never been studied. The Sucher equation is a relativistic equation with positive energy projectors imposed on the interaction. Since spin is inherent to the equation, the Sucher equation is equivalent to a relativistic Schrödinger equation with a spin-dependent effective potential. Through a complete general angular momentum analysis of the equation, …

Weak Shear Study Of Galaxy Clusters By Simulated Gravitational Lensing, David Raymond Coss May 2010

Weak Shear Study Of Galaxy Clusters By Simulated Gravitational Lensing, David Raymond Coss

Dissertations

Gravitational lensing has been simulated for numerical galaxy clusters in order to characterize the effects of substructure and shape variations of dark matter halos on the weak lensing properties of clusters. In order to analyze realistic galaxy clusters, 6 high-resolution Adaptive Refinement Tree N-body simulations of clusters with hydrodynamics are used, in addition to a simulation of one group undergoing a merger. For each cluster, the three-dimensional particle distribution is projected perpendicular to three orthogonal lines of sight, providing 21 projected mass density maps. The clusters have representative concentration and mass values for clusters in the concordance cosmology. Two gravitational …

Integration Of Electronic And Optical Techniques In The Design And Fabrication Of Pressure Sensors, Ivan Padron Jan 2010

Integration Of Electronic And Optical Techniques In The Design And Fabrication Of Pressure Sensors, Ivan Padron

Dissertations

Since the introduction of micro-electro-mechanical systems fabrication methods, piezoresistive pressure sensors have become the more popular pressure transducers. They dominate pressure sensor commercialization due to their high performance, stability and repeatability. However, increasing demand for harsh environment sensing devices has made sensors based on Fabry-Perot interferometry the more promising optical pressure sensors due to their high degree of sensitivity, small size, high temperature performance, versatility, and improved immunity to environmental noise and interference. The work presented in this dissertation comprises the design, fabrication, and testing of sensors that fuse these two pressure sensing technologies into one integrated unit. A key …

Relationship Between Photospheric Magnetic Fields And Coronal Activities, Changyi Tan Jan 2010

Relationship Between Photospheric Magnetic Fields And Coronal Activities, Changyi Tan

Dissertations

Coronal emission comes in two forms, a steady component where the corona is heated to million degrees and a much hotter transient component of solar flares. Both components are known to be related to the evolution of surface magnetic fields. This dissertation studies the evolution of photospheric magnetic fields and flow fields and their relation to the properties of these two coronal emission components.

The key issue in the study of the steady coronal emission is the coronal heating problem: how the corona is heated to millions of degrees while the underlying solar photosphere is only a few thousand degrees. …
