The 129Xe nuclear spin polarization (PXe) that can be achieved via spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) is typically limited at high in-cell xenon densities ([Xe]cell), due primarily to corresponding reductions in the alkali metal electron spin polarization (e.g. PRb) caused by increased non-spin-conserving Rb–Xe collisions. While demonstrating the utility of volume holographic grating (VHG)-narrowed lasers for Rb/129Xe SEOP, we recently reported [P. Nikolaou et al., JMR 197 (2009) 249] an anomalous dependence of the observed PXe on the in-cell xenon partial pressure (pXe), wherein PXe values were abnormally low at decreased pXe, peaked at moderate pXe (~300 torr), and remained surprisingly …

In this paper, two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy is used to follow the nitrogen atom density in flowing dielectric barrier discharges fed with pure nitrogen and operating at atmospheric pressure. Two different dielectric barrier discharge regimes are investigated: the Townsend regime, which is homogeneous although operating at atmospheric pressure, and the more common filamentary regime. In both regimes, densities as high as 3x1014 /cm3 are detected. However, the N atoms kinetic formation depends on the discharge regime. The saturation level is reached more rapidly with a filamentary discharge. For a given discharge regime, the N atom density depends strongly …

Titan's atmosphere mainly made of nitrogen and methane is rich in organic molecules. Hydrocarbons are formed from the photolytic dissociation of CH4 and nitriles are created by dissociation of N2 followed by reactions with hydrocarbons. In order to understand the physicochemical mechanisms responsible for the evolution of Titan's atmosphere, photochemical models are built. The latter need constrains for vertical profiles of organic compounds from the high thermosphere down to the low stratosphere as well as photodissociation rates. Those profiles over the entire atmosphere can be retrieved from Cassini observations, in particular by limb sounding, coupling infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. However, …

A flowing microwave post-discharge source sustained at 2.45 GHz in pure nitrogen has been investigated by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) spectroscopy. Variations of the optical emission along the post-discharge (near, pink and late afterglow) have been studied and the gas temperature has been determined. TALIF spectroscopy has been used in the late afterglow to determine the absolute ground-state nitrogen atomic densities using krypton as a reference gas. Measurements show that the microwave flowing post-discharge is an efficient source of N (4S) atoms in late afterglow. In our experimental conditions, the maximum N (4S) density …

We study fully hydrated bilayers of two di-monounsaturated phospholipids diC18:1PC (DOPC) and diC22:1PC with varying amounts of alamethicin (Alm). We combine the use of X-ray diffuse scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to determine the orientation of alamethicin in model lipids. Comparison of the experimental and simulated form factors shows that Alm helices are inserted transmembrane at high humidity and high concentrations, in agreement with earlier results. The X-ray scattering data and the MD simulations agree that membrane thickness changes very little up to 1/10 Alm/ DOPC. In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. Volume holographic gratings (VHGs) can be exploited to narrow the spectral output of high-power laserdiode arrays (LDAs) by nearly an order of magnitude, permitting more efficient generation of laser-polarized noble gases for various applications. A ~3-fold improvement in 129Xe nuclear spin polarization, PXe, (compared to a conventional LDA) was achieved with the VHG-LDA’s center wavelength tuned to a wing of the Rb D1 line. Additionally, an anomalous dependence of PXe on the xenon density within the OP cell is reported—including high PXe values (>10%) at high xenon partial pressures (~1000 torr).

Visible emission from Rb optical pumping cells was characterized under a range of conditions relevant to the production of laserpolarized xenon (including temperature, partial pressures, and D1-resonant 795 nm laser power). Bright 421 nm (6P --> 5S) emission was consistent with energy-pooling processes of the type: Rb*(5P1/2) + Rb*(5P1/2,3/2) --> Rb*(6P1/2,3/2) + Rb(5S1/2), with processes transiting through 5D states likely contributing at higher temperatures/lower N2 partial pressures. Under such conditions a number of Rb lines may be observed, indicating population of Rb states to P9D (~31822 cm^-1). Such energies exceed those required for efficient production of laser-induced plasma.

The interactions between xenon and DMPC/DHPC bicelles (q = 3.5%,7.5% w/v) were studied via 2H, 129Xe, 131Xe, and optically enhanced 129Xe NMR. The chemical shifts, linewidths, and quadrupolar couplings of the xenon/bicelle NMR signals were correlated with different regions of the bicellar phase diagram. The addition of xenon (<70 mM) was observed to reduce the temperature-onset of bicelle alignment by several degrees, in quantitative agreement with effects previously observed with chloroform; however, the stable liquid-crystalline range was not significantly reduced. Preliminary laser-polarized xenon/bicelle studies yielded 129Xe T1 values of ~120 s, long enough to permit a variety of planned experiments.

We present a study of the evolution of the valence bandstructure of Fe/Cu(100) as a function of Fe coverage in the 0–12 monolayer range. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to probe the valence electronic structure and to extract Fermi surface contours as a function of increasing Fe coverage. The first few monolayers show Fe-induced densities of states that are significantly different from those in thicker films. At 5 ML, distinct changes occur in the Fermi surface, where a magnetization reorientation transition has been observed previously.

Path integral Monte Carlo techniques are used to study Na3+ and Na3 at finite temperatures. In accord with previous classical trajectory calculations, we find that vibrational motion significantly distorts the clusters from the previously predicted zero temperature geometries, due to the flat Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface. More importantly, these distorted clusters show significant localized electronic bonding, in contrast to the delocalized bonding found in previous studies of the zero temperature structures.

Liquids that involve changes in electronic structure are difficult to simulate using pairwise additive forces. In this paper we use a semiempirical model of the internal structure of atoms in order to simulate simultaneously electronic and nuclear dynamics of fluids. The proposed excitonic phase of mercury is critically examined with these models.

A quantum-mechanical electron in dense helium gas is examined by computer simulation using realistic, soft potentials. The behavior of the system is observed as the density is increased; there are indications that the electron (at least partially) localizes and forms a bubblelike state.
