The production of D* ± (2010) mesons in e± p scattering in the range of exchanged photon virtuality 0.05 < Q2 < 0.7 GeV2 has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The decay channels D* + → D0 π+ with D0 → K- π+ and corresponding antiparticle decay were used to identify D* mesons and the ZEUS beampipe calorimeter was used to identify the scattered electron. Differential D* cross sections as functions of Q2, inelasticity, y, transverse momentum of the D* meson, pT (D*), and pseudorapidity of the D* meson, η (D*), have been measured in the kinematic region 0.02 < y < 0.85, 1.5 < pT (D*) < 9.0 GeV and | η (D*) | < 1.5. The measured differential cross sections are in agreement with two different NLO QCD calculations. The cross sections are also compared to previous ZEUS measurements in the photoproduction and DIS regimes. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured for different jet radii in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering for boson virtualities Q2 > 125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 81.7 pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally inclusive mode for different values of the jet radius R. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of Q2 and the jet transverse energy, ET, Bjet. The dependence on R of the inclusive-jet cross section has been measured for Q2 > 125 and 500 GeV2 and found to be …

Mean values and differential distributions of event-shape variables have been studied in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The kinematic range is 80 < Q2 < 20 480 GeV2 and 0.0024 < x < 0.6, where Q2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The data are compared with a model based on a combination of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations with next-to-leading-logarithm corrections and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative power corrections. The power-correction method provides a reasonable description of the data for all event-shape variables studied. Nevertheless, the lack of consistency of the determination of αs and of the non-perturbative parameter of the model, over(α0, -), suggests the importance of higher-order processes that are not yet included in the model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The production of beauty quarks with a D*± and a muon in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb-1. Low transverse-momentum thresholds for the muon and D* meson allow for a measurement of beauty production closer to the production threshold than previous measurements. The beauty signal was extracted using the charge correlations and angular distributions of the muon with respect to the D* meson. Cross sections for photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering are somewhat higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions, and compatible with other measurements. © …

The photoproduction of dijet events, where the two jets with the highest transverse energy are separated by a large gap in pseudorapidity, have been studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 39 pb -1. Rapidity-gap events are defined in terms of the energy flow between the jets, such that the total summed transverse energy in this region is less than some value ETCUT. The data show a clear excess over the predictions of standard photoproduction models. This is interpreted as evidence for a strongly interacting exchange of a color-singlet object. Monte Carlo models which include such a …

The photoproduction of prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, has been studied in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 77 pb-1. Cross sections were measured for the transverse energy of the photon and the jet larger than 5 and 6 GeV, respectively. The differential γ+jet cross sections were reconstructed as functions of the transverse energy, pseudorapidity and xγobs, the fraction of the incoming photon momentum taken by the photon-jet system. Predictions based on leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD generally underestimate the …

A search for stop production in R-parity-violating supersymmetry has been performed in e+p interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 65 pb-1. At HERA, the R-parity-violating coupling λ' allows resonant squark production, e+d→̃ q. Since the lowest-mass squark state in most supersymmetry models is the light stop, ̃t, this search concentrated on production of ̃t, followed either by a direct R-parity-violating decay, or by the gauge decay to b̃x1+. No evidence for stop production was found and limits were set on λ'131 as a function of the stop mass in the framework of the minimal …

A search for lepton-flavor-violating interactions ep → μX and ep → τX has been performed with the ZEUS detector using the entire HERA I data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 pb-1. The data were taken at center-of-mass energies, √s, of 300 and 318 GeV. No evidence of lepton-flavor violation was found, and constraints were derived on leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below √s, limits were set on λeq1 √β ℓq, where λeq1 is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a first-generation quark q1, and βℓq is the branching ratio …

Inclusive jet cross sections in photoproduction for events containing a D* meson have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78.6 pb-1. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, Q2, of less than 1 GeV2, and a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 130 < Wγp < 280 GeV. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations. Good agreement is found with the NLO calculations over most of the measured kinematic region. Requiring a second jet in the event allowed a more detailed comparison with QCD calculations. The measured dijet cross sections are also compared to Monte Carlo (MC) models which incorporate leading-order matrix elements followed by parton showers and hadronisation. The NLO QCD predictions are in general agreement with the data although differences have been isolated to regions where contributions from higher orders are expected to be significant. The MC models give a better description than the NLO predictions of the shape of the measured cross sections. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 < Q 2 < 5000 GeV2. The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy √s = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82.2pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy (ET,Bjet), pseudorapidity (ηLABjet) and Q2 with ET,Bjet > 5 GeV and -1 < ηLABjet < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant αs(MZ), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is αs(MZ) = 0.1179 ± 0.0013 (stat.)-0.0046-0.0028 (exp.) -0.0046+0.0064 (th.). © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2005.

The inelastic production of J/ψ mesons in ep collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 109 pb-1. The J/ψ mesons were identified using the decay channel J/ψ → μ+μ- The measurements were performed in the kinematic range 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 50 < W < 250 GeV, 0.2 < z < 0.9 and -1.6 < Ylab < 1.3, where Q2 is the virtuality of the exchanged photon, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, z is the fraction of the photon energy carried by the J/ψ meson in the proton rest frame and Ylab is the rapidity of the J/ψ in the laboratory frame. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical predictions within the non-relativistic QCD framework including colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions, as well as to predictions based on the κT-factorisation approach. Calculations of the colour-singlet process generally agree with the data, whereas inclusion of colour-octet terms spoils this agreement. © Springer-Verlag/Società Italiana di Fisica 2005.

The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and neutral current processes taken with e + and e - beams, together with differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e + p scattering and dijet production in γp scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input of jet-production data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of alpha s(MZ) at NLO; alphas = 0.1183±0.0028(exp.)±0.0008(model). An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as ±0.005. This is the first extraction of alphas(MZ) …

Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep → e′ γ* p → e′ X N, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 4.2 pb-1. The measurement covers a wide range in the γ* p c.m. energy W (37-245 GeV), photon virtuality Q2 (2.2-80 GeV2) and mass MX (0.28-35 GeV). The diffractive cross section for MX > 2 GeV rises strongly with W; the rise is steeper with increasing Q2. The latter observation excludes the description of diffractive deep inelastic scattering in terms of the exchange of a single pomeron. The ratio of diffractive …

© 2005, Springer New York LLC. All rights reserved. The production of D∗+, D0, D+, D+s and Λ+c charm hadrons and their antiparticles in ep scattering at HERA was measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 79 pb−1. The measurement has been performed in the photoproduction regime with the exchanged-photon virtuality Q2 < 1GeV2 and for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 3.8GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D,Λc)| < 1.6. The production cross sections were used to determine the ratio of neutral and charged D-meson production rates, Ru/d, the strangeness-suppression factor, γs, and the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, Pdv. The measured Ru/d and γs values agree with those obtained in deep inelastic scattering and in e+e- annihilations. The measured Pdv value is smaller than, but consistent with, the previous measurements. The fractions of c quarks hadronising as a particular charm hadron, f(c → D, Λc), were derived in the given kinematic range. The measured open-charm fragmentation fractions are consistent with previous results, although the measured f(c → D*+) is smaller and f(c → Λ+c) is larger than those obtained in e+e- annihilations. These results generally support the hypothesis that fragmentation proceeds independently of the hard sub-process.

The ZEUS detector has been used to study dissociation of virtual photons in events with a leading proton, γ*p → Xp, in e+p collisions at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities in two ranges, 0.03 < Q2 < 0.60 GeV2 and 2 < Q2 < 100 GeV2, with MX > 1.5 GeV, where MX is the mass of the hadronic final state, X. Events were required to have a leading proton, detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer, carrying at least 90% of the incoming proton energy. The cross section is presented as a function of t, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, Φ, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and …

The dependence of dijet production on the virtuality of the exchanged photon, Q2, has been studied by measuring dijet cross sections in the range 0 ≲ Q2 < 2000 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. Dijet cross sections were measured for jets with transverse energy ETjet > 7.5 and 6.5 GeV and pseudorapidities in the photon-proton centre-of-mass frame in the range -3 < jet < 0. The variable xγobs, a measure of the photon momentum entering the hard process, was used to enhance the sensitivity of the measurement to the photon structure. The Q2 dependence of the ratio of low- to high-xγobs events was measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions were found to generally underestimate the low-xγobs contribution relative to that at high xγobs. Monte Carlo models based on leading-logarithmic parton-showers, using a partonic structure for the photon which falls smoothly with increasing Q2, provide a qualitative description of the data. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2004.
