Measurement Of Nuclear Quadrupole Interactions Using Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Desmond C. Cook Jan 1996

Measurement Of Nuclear Quadrupole Interactions Using Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Desmond C. Cook

Physics Faculty Publications

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a useful probe for investigating nuclear quadrupole interactions. It enables the magnitude, sign and asymmetry of the electric quadrupole coupling constant to be determined. It is especially important for its ability to measure these parameters for excited nuclear states. The Mössbauer effect is used to measure excited state quadrupole moments in materials whose electric field gradient (EFG) is known. More commonly however, it is used to determine the EFG from which atomic bonding and electronic structure are determined. The technique also allows temperature dependent orientation of sublattice magnetization to be measured using the direction of the electric …

Determining The Effects Of Waste Coal Ash On Landfill Radon Levels, Richard S. Krysiak Jr. Dec 1995

Determining The Effects Of Waste Coal Ash On Landfill Radon Levels, Richard S. Krysiak Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Coal contains trace amounts of the primary radionuclides 40K, and elements of the 4n (232Th), 4n+2 (238U), and 4n+3 (235U) series including 220Rn and 222Rn. Combustion of coal by electric power and heat plants result in concentration of noncombustible mineral matter, including most of the radionuclides, in the coal ash. The increased radiation due to the concentration of radionuclides is known as technologically enhanced natural radiation. The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of landfilled coal ash on one specific aspect of technologically enhanced natural radiation, radon levels. …

Heavy-Ion Interaction Models For Radiation Transport, Rajendra R. Dubey Oct 1995

Heavy-Ion Interaction Models For Radiation Transport, Rajendra R. Dubey

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with finding the values for the nuclear cross sections used in the Boltzmann equation for space radiation transport and dose estimates. An extraordinary number of cross sections are required because of the large number of ion types and their extensive energy range, The Lippmann-Schwinger equation is numerically solved in momentum space for a first order optical potential (free space case) and calculations are made for the total and absorption cross sections for nudeus-nucleus scattering. Absorption cross sections are also calculated using a medium modified firstorder optical potential in the Lippmann-Schwinger equation and are compared with experimental …

The Study Of Pion Absorption On -4he At 355 Mev/C With Lads (Large Acceptance Detector System), Thomas A. Dooling Jul 1995

The Study Of Pion Absorption On -4he At 355 Mev/C With Lads (Large Acceptance Detector System), Thomas A. Dooling

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The medium and long range part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction can be described within the framework of pion exchange. In order to understand this fundamental interaction, it is therefore important to study the interaction of pions with nucleons and nuclei, which can either be elastic or inelastic scattering or absorption. Whereas the elastic and inelastic channels can be well described by different models, our understanding of pion absorption is still rather poor. There are still a lot of open questions, for instance on the strength of three and more nucleon absorption and the role of initial and final state interactions. …

Introduction To Monte Carlo Methods, Sue Ellen Mccloskey, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1995

Introduction To Monte Carlo Methods, Sue Ellen Mccloskey, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Monte Carlo computer programming is becoming increasingly popular to those who use it, due to the ease with which complex problems may be formulated and solved. However, the growth of MC programming for small projects is inhibited by a frequent misconception of difficulty, inferred from the high level of complexity of problems solved in High Energy and Nuclear Physics using MC methods. In addition, few students of science and engineering are receiving exposure to the basic issues involved in the Monte Carlo process despite the ease with which MC can be used to solve classical physics problems, especially those problems …

Drift Chamber Utilizing Microstrip Readout For Testing A New Micro Tpc Concept, H. Weiman, W. G. Gong, S. Margetis, M. T. Burks, Wilfred J. Braithwaite, A. A. Rollefson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A drift chamber type radiation detector is being used to examine design criteria for a new type of detector called a micro Time Projection Chamber (micro TPC) which is being proposed for use in high energy nuclear physics experiments. The main advantage of the micro TPC detector is its very low radiation thickness compared to its silicon counterpart. The micro TPC is a charged-particle detector which willbe optimized for good two track resolution which is needed inahigh track density environment. Such performance requires low electron diffusion and high resolution readout. The diffusion willbe reduced bylimiting the drift distance to 15 …

Optimizing Tracking Software For A Time Projection Chamber, Wilson H. Howe, Christine A. Byrd, Amber D. Climer, Wilfred J. Braithwaite, Jeffrey T. Mitchell

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

International research collaborations will be using accelerators in the U.S. and Europe to produce and detect t5 phase transition in high-density nuclear matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma, formed in collisions between pairs of A=200 nuclei, for projectiles with kinetic energies large compared to their rest mass energies. Each collaboration will use time projection chambers (TPC) to track thousands ofsecondary charged particles formed in the aftermath ofeach central primary collision. Creating and optimizing TPC tracking software is difficultinsuch a high multiplicity environment, particularly for particles with a low momentum (below 300 MeV/C). A thigh momenta, energy loss is low enough for …

In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation.

Accurate Nucleon-Nucleon Potential With Charge-Independence Breaking, R. B. Wiringa, V. G. J. Stoks, R. Schiavilla Jan 1995

Accurate Nucleon-Nucleon Potential With Charge-Independence Breaking, R. B. Wiringa, V. G. J. Stoks, R. Schiavilla

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a new high-quality nucleon-nucleon potential with explicit charge dependence and charge asymmetry, which we designate Argonne 𝑣18. The model has a charge-independent part with 14 operator components that is an updated version of the Argonne 𝑣14 potential. Three additional charge-dependent and one charge-asymmetric operators are added, along with a complete electromagnetic interaction. The potential has been fit directly to the Nijmegen pp and np scattering database, low-energy nn scattering parameters, and deuteron binding energy. With 40 adjustable parameters it gives a χ2 per datum of 1.09 for 4301 pp and np data in the range 0–350 …

Feasibility Exploration Of Throughfold As A Predictor For Target Loading And Associated Error Bounds, Kris G. Rongone Dec 1994

Feasibility Exploration Of Throughfold As A Predictor For Target Loading And Associated Error Bounds, Kris G. Rongone

Theses and Dissertations

Various applications of the Fredholm integral equation appear m different fields of study. An application of particular interest to the Air Force arises in determination of target loading from nuclear effects simulations. Current techniques first unfold the incident spectrum then determine target loading; resulting spectrum and loading are assumed exact. This study investigates the feasibility of a new method, through-fold, for directly determining defensible error bounds on target loading. Through-fold uses a priori information to define input data and represents target response with a linear combination of instrument responses plus a remainder to derive a quadratic expression for exact target …

Dosimetry Of High-Energy Heavy-Ion Beams Using Energy-Dependent Green's Functions, Sang Yull Chun Oct 1994

Dosimetry Of High-Energy Heavy-Ion Beams Using Energy-Dependent Green's Functions, Sang Yull Chun

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical description of the transport of high-charge and high-energy (HZE) ion bombardment of biological tissue is developed. The energy-dependent Green’s functions and particle fluxes are obtained for two boundary distributions - the monoenergetic and the Gaussian. Approximate energy-dependent Green’s functions for the collision terms are obtained for computational simplicity. As an application of the energy-dependent Green’s function method, dosimetric quantities, such as dose, dose-equivalent, and average quality factor, for 600A MeV56Fe , 517A MeV 40Ar, and 625A MeV 20Ne ion beams incident on a water target are obtained and compared with the values obtained from …

A Covariant Description Of The Deuteron, J. W. Van Orden Jan 1994

A Covariant Description Of The Deuteron, J. W. Van Orden

Physics Faculty Publications

An introduction to the use of Bethe-Salpeter and quasipotential equations in the description of electron scattering from the deuteron is provided. The basic formalism and many technical issues are introduced in the context of a simple scalar theory. Results for bound-state wave functions and scattering phases shifts for a variety of quasipotential prescriptions are presented and qualitative characteristics of these solutions are discussed. The elastic form factors for the bound state in this model are calculated using the spectator or Gross equation. The calculations are then extended to account for the complexities associated with nucleon spin and results are presented …

Time Projection Chamber's Efficiency, Obtained Using Cern's Geant Code, Christine A. Byrd, Charles M. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1993

Time Projection Chamber's Efficiency, Obtained Using Cern's Geant Code, Christine A. Byrd, Charles M. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Geometrical acceptance and reconstruction of tracks have been carried out for a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) used in Experiment NA35: the 35th experiment in the North Area of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), located at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). NA35 used the SPS at CERN to produce 6.4 TeV beams of 32S for central collisions with Au nuclei. The TPC modeling effort used a modified version of CERN's Monte Carlo program GEANT, which simulates the response of the NA35 TPC to output from CERN's primary event generators. GEANT was used to simulate three-dimensional pixel data in the …

Monte Carlo Director Modeling And Display, Using The Cern Laboratory, Christine A. Byrd, Charles M. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Detectors for high energy nuclear physics experiments are being modeled using programs developed and maintained at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. These programs include data handling and display routines, as well as those using random-sampling Monte Carlo techniques to calculate energy depositions for high energy particles as they pass through the various parts of the detector system. The complete CERN library has been imported for use with our Workstation computers in a multiple user environment. The enormous CERN Monte Carlo program GEANT(French for GIANT) tracks the progress of a particle through a detector on a simulated event-by-event basis. …

User-Interface Coding For The Cern/Geant Nuclear Physics Program, David L. Roetzel, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1993

User-Interface Coding For The Cern/Geant Nuclear Physics Program, David L. Roetzel, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Explanations will be given of the various user-written routines required by the Monte Carlo detector-modeling program GEANT, developed by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. User-written routines must be linked with the CERN library to accomplish the researcher's intentions. Examples will illustrate how GEANT passes information to subprograms needed to model events. Various data structures used by GEANT library calls and included in each user routine, are similarly illustrated. Both computational-speed and memory-size limitations need to be factored into the construction of a simulation model. This will constrain the calls used in the user-written routines. Examples are provided of …

Search For The Mössbauer Effect In 109ag, Shokrollah Rezaie-Serej Apr 1992

Search For The Mössbauer Effect In 109ag, Shokrollah Rezaie-Serej

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The 88-keV first-excited nuclear state in 109Ag has a mean lifetime of 57.1 sec and a corresponding natural linewidth of 1.15 x 10-17 eV which is nearly six orders of magnitude narrower than the width for the 93-keV 13.2-μsec state in 67Zn. The 93-keV transition in 67Zn has the narrowest linewidth for which the Mossbauer effect has been observed. The 88-keV transition in 109Ag is obviously a very difficult case for the observation of the Mossbauer effect and provides a stringent test for exploring the practical limits of inhomogeneous line broadening in real single …

Formation Of Positronium In E+ + H- Collisions, Jack C. Straton, Richard J. Drachman Dec 1991

Formation Of Positronium In E+ + H- Collisions, Jack C. Straton, Richard J. Drachman

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cross sections for positronium formation by capture from the negative hydrogen ion are given. Orthogonalization corrections to the Coulomb (first-order) Born approximation (CBA) differential and total cross sections are calculated using approximate H- wave functions of both Löwdin [Phys. Rev. 90, 123 (1953)] and Chandrasekhar [Astrophys. J. 100, 176 (1944)]. The present calculation of the CBA cross sections using the post interaction for Löwdin’s wave function (LCBAPS) disagrees with the calculation of Choudhury, Mukherjee, and Sural (CMS) [Phys. Rev. A 33, 2358 (1986)], whereas our results using the prior interaction agree. Thus, where CMS found an order …

Anyonic Superconductivity In A Modified Large-U Hubbard Model, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta K. Panigrahi Nov 1991

Anyonic Superconductivity In A Modified Large-U Hubbard Model, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta K. Panigrahi

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A modified large-U Hubbard model at half filling is analyzed by a mean-field approach. Preserving a local U(1) symmetry of the action, the fluctuations about half filling are studied in the spirit of the commensurate-flux-phase condition. The fluctuations then contribute a Chern-Simons term to the tree-level Lagrangian with a coefficient appropriate to that of a half fermion. With the Coulomb repulsion term, we study the low-energy excitations of the model and show the existence of superconductivity in the presence of a four-Fermi interaction term.

Eta Photoproduction Via 2H(Γη)2H*, Yan Zhang Aug 1991

Eta Photoproduction Via 2H(Γη)2H*, Yan Zhang

Masters Theses

The reaction H(γη)2H* is studied using the impulse approximation. A recent fit to the H(γη)2H* elementary amplitude is employed in the calculation. The n-p final state is described by Reid's soft core potentials. The calculation shows very different cross sections for the final isospin 0 and isospin 1 break-up channels. The S11 resonance is demonstrated to dominate the eta cross sections in the 740 MeV photon laboratory energy region. Fermi motion in the deuteron does not significantly spread the effect of the S11 . All these results demonstrate that the reaction H(γη) …

Fock-Tani Hamiltonian For Reactions Involving Two-Electron Atoms, Jack C. Straton Jun 1991

Fock-Tani Hamiltonian For Reactions Involving Two-Electron Atoms, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Fock-Tani Hamiltonian is found for scattering processes involving up to two ions and two electrons. Possible bound-state species include one or two electrons bound on an ion fixed at the origin, and a one-electron projectile atom. A diagrammatic technique is illustrated that simplifies the algebra of the transformation. Coulomb- or plane-wave states are automatically generated by the same asymptotic Hamiltonian for all arrangement channels.

A Valence Quark Model, Tony A. Forest Jun 1991

A Valence Quark Model, Tony A. Forest

Masters Theses

A quark model of the baryons has been developed for calculating properties of nucleons which can be useful in nuclear interactions. A Hamiltonian, motivated by QCD, was diagonalized in a harmonic oscillator basis. In addition to predicting the proton charge radius and Delta-Nucleon mass difference, this work also yields a value of the axial vector coupling constant which compares well with experiment. Electric and magnetic form factors represent the major success of this model. The electromagnetic transitions predicted by this model compete well with other models but are not able to reproduce experimental results completely. The advantage of this model …

Rotational Symmetries Of Nuclear States: Spin Determinations In Advanced Laboratory, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1990

Rotational Symmetries Of Nuclear States: Spin Determinations In Advanced Laboratory, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

An advanced laboratory experiment is described which shows the connection between the rotational symmetries of nuclear states and the assignments of spins to discrete nuclear states. Standard angular correlation methods were used to study the two sequential gamma ray transitions in each ⁶⁰Ni nucleus, populated by unobserved beta decays from a weak radioactive ⁶⁰Co source. The chosen electronics and detectors were inexpensive and easy to operate. This experiment was extended to introduce students to real-world data acquisition, using finite-geometry detectors, which resulted in enormously larger coincident data rates.

Principles And Clinical Applications Of Magnetic Resonance, Rao P. Gullapalli, Teresa T. Evans, Roger M. Hawk Jan 1990

Principles And Clinical Applications Of Magnetic Resonance, Rao P. Gullapalli, Teresa T. Evans, Roger M. Hawk

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A review is presented which covers the basic theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with regard to angular momentum, magnetic moments, and the classical mechanical description of the NMR experiment. Longitudinal (T,) and Transverse (T2) relaxation times are defined as well as the basic pulse sequences used for their measurement. In particular, the 180°-t-90° and the Hahn Spin Echo pulse sequences are described in detail. Basic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) theory is discussed with regard to slice selection, frequency encoding, and phase encoding to define the imaged volume element. The equations defining the amount of Tt , T2 , and …

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu Dec 1989

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu

Masters Theses

Calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, O+ state have been performed within the context of recoil corrected continuum shell model. Approximations previously employed for inelastic scattering with the recoil corrected continuum shell model are eliminated in the work. The O+ state exhausts only 10% of the energy weighted sum rule and previous shell model calculations for the excitation of this state produce about ten times too much strength. This difficulty is alleviated by the use translationally invariant wave functions and the application of continuum boundary conditions for this particle unbound state. The structure of the O+ state is …

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang Dec 1989

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang

Masters Theses

This thesis presents an examination that the two nuclear charge form factors, relativistic and non-relativistic, are equivalent approximately in an appreciable range. The relativistic one is contributed by both vector charge density and tensor charge density. And the non-relativistic charge form factor is contributed by the nuclear densities from experimental electron scattering cross section, these densities are fundamental to much of nuclear structure physics.

The Dirac equation is used to calculate the vector charge density and tensor density, because the charge density from the analysis of the experimental data may be compared with proton charge densities obtained from various models …

Nuclear Fragmentation Energy And Momentum Transfer Distributions In Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions, Ferdous Khan Jul 1989

Nuclear Fragmentation Energy And Momentum Transfer Distributions In Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions, Ferdous Khan

Physics Theses & Dissertations

An optical model description of energy and momentum transfer in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, based upon composite particle multiple scattering theory, is presented. Transverse and longitudinal momentum transfers to the projectile are shown to arise from the real and absorptive part of the optical potential, respectively. Comparisons of fragment momentum distribution observables with experiments are made and trends outlined based on our knowledge of the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction. Corrections to the above calculations are discussed. Finally, use of the model as a tool for estimating collision impact parameters is indicated.

Recoil Corrected Continuum Shell Model Form Factor Calculations For 4He(E,E’)4He(0+), Jiang Yu Aug 1988

Recoil Corrected Continuum Shell Model Form Factor Calculations For 4He(E,E’)4He(0+), Jiang Yu

Masters Theses

Charge form factor calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, 0+ state have been performed within the context of the recoil corrected continuum shell model. A pure Os4 ground state structure is assumed and full internal coordinate recoil corrections are made. The result is compared with available data. It is demonstrated that the 0+ state may be described in a 1p -1h shell model context. Inclusion of nsOs-1 ground state correlations is suggested for further research.

Theory Of Alpha-Nucleus Collisions At High Energies, Francis A. Cucinotta Jul 1988

Theory Of Alpha-Nucleus Collisions At High Energies, Francis A. Cucinotta

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The interaction of high energy alpha particles with atomic nuclei is considered using multiple scattering theories. Semi-classical solutions to coupled-channel equations derived from Watson's form of the nucleus-nucleus multiple scattering series are shown to be equivalent to the Glauber multiple scattering series. Second-order solutions for the elastic amplitude are developed and used to study the effects of short-range correlations in nuclear scattering. The Jastrow method is used to model the two-particle density for 4He and to construct one and two particle form factors. Excellent agreement with experimental data for angular distributions, and total and reaction cross sections is found. …

Hypernuclear Photoproduction Via (Γ,K*), Kimberly Ann Hodgkinson Dec 1987

Hypernuclear Photoproduction Via (Γ,K*), Kimberly Ann Hodgkinson

Masters Theses

The nuclear (γ,K*) reaction is studied using plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) and a distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA), which includes full Coulomb and optical distortions. The model and calculations for each model are presented. For 12C(γ K*)12B, the two approximation methods are compared at 2 energies: 1.47 Gev/c and 1.84GeV/c. 208Pb(γ, K*)208 i s a lso examined. Distortion effects are found to greatly alter the magnitude of the cross sections, but the shape of the angular distributions remains. the same. Conclusions suggest further study.
