The Sensitivity Of The December 2014 New York Mixed Precipitation Event To Initial Condition And Microphysics Uncertainty, Meghan Conway
The Sensitivity Of The December 2014 New York Mixed Precipitation Event To Initial Condition And Microphysics Uncertainty, Meghan Conway
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The prediction of wintertime precipitation type and amount can be a challenging undertaking, partly due to uncertainties in meteorological parameters such as temperature (horizontal and vertical), moisture, and wind. During Dec. 9-10, 2014, a mixed precipitation event occurred in the upper Hudson River Valley. This storm produced an unexpected heavy mesoscale snowband during rush hour in the Capitol region, after winter weather advisories had been cancelled.
Arctic Sea Ice Predictability And Prediction, Chao-Yuan Yang
Arctic Sea Ice Predictability And Prediction, Chao-Yuan Yang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Arctic sea ice has experienced dramatic changes for the past few decades, which has profound global climatic effects, or feedbacks. The drastic changes and their associated impacts have led to increasing demand for sea ice predictions from a wide scope of stakeholders across seasonal to decadal timescales. Thus, it is important to improve our understanding of sea ice predictability on different timescales and our ability to predict Arctic sea ice.

16-Day Free-Traveling Rossby Waves And Their Association With Northern Hemisphere Blocking, Ernesto W. Findlay
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
An analysis of the 16-day free Rossby wave is performed. The behavior of this wave includes a barotropic vertical structure that is independent of local forcing. An Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was performed on 15–30-day filtered geopotential height anomalies to extract the spatial patterns of the wave. Results show that the first two EOFs are in quadrature with each other, representing a westward moving signal with an average period of around 23 days and a phase velocity of. The Principal Components (PCs) from these EOFs were used to construct a 16-day wave index, which was employed as a tool …
Assessing The Spatial And Temporal Variability Of The Detroit River And Harmful Algal Blooms In Western Lake Erie, Angela W. Yu
Assessing The Spatial And Temporal Variability Of The Detroit River And Harmful Algal Blooms In Western Lake Erie, Angela W. Yu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Despite efforts to reduce the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in western Lake Erie, blooms recur annually due to agricultural runoff, storms with high winds and heavy rains, and weak lake circulation patterns. The influence from river inputs on the spatial and temporal characteristics of HABs remains relatively unknown. The Detroit River, which contributes about 80% of the basin's total inflow can have a large influence on the spatial and temporal distribution of the bloom. To understand this, optically classified imagery, in situ water measurements, and meteorological and river discharge observations were compiled and synthesized to examine the spatiotemporal …
Extreme Molecular Diversity In Biomass Burning Atmospheric Organic Aerosol Observed Through Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry, Matthew Brege
Extreme Molecular Diversity In Biomass Burning Atmospheric Organic Aerosol Observed Through Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry, Matthew Brege
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Ambient atmospheric aerosol is ubiquitous in the atmosphere, originating from a variety of natural and man-made sources. These microscopic particles have profound impacts on the global climate system as well as human health. The organic fraction of atmospheric aerosol is an extremely complex mixture which is not yet fully characterized. These unknown organic aerosol species contribute to the uncertainty in the effect of aerosol on climate and uncertainty in overall ambient aerosol toxicity. Light absorbing organic aerosol can interact with incoming solar radiation and contribute to atmospheric heating; however, the source apportionment and overall fate of these absorbing organic aerosol …

Coastal Wetlands: A Synthesis, Charles S. Hopkinson, Eric Wolanski, Mark M. Brinson, Donald R. Cahoon, Gerardo M.E. Perillo
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
What are coastal wetland ecosystems, what are their limits of distribution, and where do they exist in the overall coastal landscape? There are several general definitions for wetlands, but the Ramsar definition is likely the most broadly encompassing (http://www.ramsar. org/), whereas others are more focused definitions tailored to country-specific protection and management policies (Mitsch and Gosselink, 2006). We offer a very general approach rather than a precise definition: coastal wetlands are ecosystems that are found within an elevation gradient that ranges between subtidal depths where light penetrates to support photosynthesis of benthic plants to the landward edge where the sea …

Pawnee Dam Inflow Design Flood (Idf) Update And Stage-Frequency Curve Development Using Rmcrfa, Jennifer P. Christensen, Joshua J. Melliger
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
Pawnee Dam is one of the ten Salt Creek Dams designed and built in the 1960s to mitigate flooding in Lincoln, Nebraska. This short paper illustrates the update of the Pawnee Dam inflow design flood (IDF) through calibration to recent high flow events and the development of its stage-frequency or hydrologic loading curve with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Risk Management Center Reservoir Frequency Analysis (RMC-RFA) model. The IDF update follows Engineering Regulation 1110-8-2, Inflow Design Flood for Dams and Reservoirs, including unit hydrograph peaking and two antecedent pool elevations. Background information on the original design of the dam …
Comparing Reservoir Sediment Yield, Depletion, And Sustainability Within The Missouri River Basin, Daniel B. Pridal, Paul M. Boyd, Larry J. Morong
Comparing Reservoir Sediment Yield, Depletion, And Sustainability Within The Missouri River Basin, Daniel B. Pridal, Paul M. Boyd, Larry J. Morong
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
Repetitive reservoir storage capacity surveys are often thought to provide one of the most accurate methods to assess basin sediment yield. The Omaha District conducts a large scale sediment data collection and analysis program for six Missouri River mainstem and twenty-two tributary reservoirs. An analysis was conducted to compare the sediment yield, reservoir capacity, depletion trends, and comparison between projects for effects on project sustainability. Trend analysis is complicated by temporal variation in conservation practices that affect sediment yield, new reservoir survey techniques, and revised capacity computation methods. Results provide insight on the variation in basin sediment yield, reservoir depletion …

Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov
Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov
Articles
The propagation of surface water waves interacting with a current and an uneven bottom is studied. Such a situation is typical for ocean waves where the winds generate currents in the top layer of the ocean. The role of the bottom topography is taken into account since it also influences the local wave and current patterns. Specific scaling of the variables is selected which leads to approximations of Boussinesq and KdV types. The arising KdV equation with variable coefficients, dependent on the bottom topography, is studied numerically when the initial condition is in the form of the one soliton solution …
Group Line Energy In Phase-Resolved Ocean Surface Wave Orbital Velocity Reconstructions From X-Band Doppler Radar Measurements Of The Sea Surface, Andrew J. Kammerer, Erin E. Hackett
Group Line Energy In Phase-Resolved Ocean Surface Wave Orbital Velocity Reconstructions From X-Band Doppler Radar Measurements Of The Sea Surface, Andrew J. Kammerer, Erin E. Hackett
Marine Science
The wavenumber-frequency spectra of many radar measurements of the sea surface contain a linear feature at frequencies lower than the first order dispersion relationship commonly referred to as the "group line". Plant and Farquharson, showed numerically that the group line is at least partially caused by wave interference-induced breaking of steep short gravity waves. This paper uses two wave retrieval techniques, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and FFT-based dispersion curve filtering, to examine two X-band radar datasets, and compare wave orbital velocity reconstructions to ground truth wave buoy measurements within the field of view of the radar. POD allows group line …

Seismic Imaging Of Seafloor Deformation Induced By Impact From Large Submarine Landslide Blocks, Offshore Oregon, Brandi L. Lenz, Derek E. Sawyer, Benjamin Phrampus, Kathy Davenport, Ashley Long
Marine Science
A series of large blocks from the 44-North Slide, offshore Oregon, impacted the seafloor with sufficient force to induce a broad zone of deformation. In 2017, we acquired a seismic profile from the headwall area to the outer toe of this slide. Previous work identified this slide, but it has not been imaged at high resolution before this survey. A striking surficial feature is a collection of blocks that lie downslope from an amphitheater-shaped headwall. The blocks traveled up to 20-km horizontally and about 1200-m vertically down a 13◦ slope and now cover an area of ~100 km2 …

Groundwater Discharge To The Western Antarctic Coastal Ocean, Kimberly A. Null, D. Reide Corbett, Jared Crenshaw, Richard N. Peterson, Leigha E. Peterson, W. Berry Lyons
Marine Science
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) measurements have been limited along the Antarctic coast, although groundwater discharge is becoming recognized as an important process in the Antarctic. Quantifying this meltwater pathway is important for hydrologic budgets, ice mass balances and solute delivery to the coastal ocean. Here, we estimate the combined discharge of subglacial and submarine groundwater to the Antarctic coastal ocean. SGD, including subglacial and submarine groundwater, is quantified along the WAP at the Marr Glacier terminus using the activities of naturally occurring radium isotopes (223Ra, 224 Ra). Estimated SGD fluxes from a224Ra mass balance ranged from …

A Diatom Proxy For Seasonality Over The Last Three Millennia At June Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada (Ca), Laura Caitlin Streib
A Diatom Proxy For Seasonality Over The Last Three Millennia At June Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada (Ca), Laura Caitlin Streib
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Sierra Nevada snowpack is vital to the water supply of California, the world’s sixth largest economy. Though tree ring and instrumental records show the dramatic influence of environmental change on California’s hydroclimate over the last millennium, few proxy archives assess winter precipitation variability farther back in time. Here, we use diatoms from a ~3,200 yr. old sediment core to reconstruct the paleolimnology of June Lake, a hydrologically closed glacial lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada. We test the hypothesis that limnologic and climatic changes control diatom assemblages at June Lake. Fossil diatom assemblages from June Lake sediments chiefly consist …
The Links Between Gulf Of Mexico Seafloor Characteristics And Petroleum Hydrocarbons Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kimberly J. Schindler
The Links Between Gulf Of Mexico Seafloor Characteristics And Petroleum Hydrocarbons Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kimberly J. Schindler
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Gulf of Mexico (GoMx) is among the most productive regions for offshore oil and natural gas recovery. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) drilling rig exploded, burned for three days, sank, and released over 4 million barrels of oil in the subsequent 84 days before it was capped. Some oil was buoyant enough to float to the ocean surface, where some was removed via a myriad techniques. Importantly, a plume of oil remained suspended in the water column at approximately 1,100 m water depth, where it drove a marine snow event, and deposited large quantities of oil on the …
Impacts Of Climate Change On Water Balance Components In The Central Appalachian Mountains, Usa, Brandi Anne Gaertner
Impacts Of Climate Change On Water Balance Components In The Central Appalachian Mountains, Usa, Brandi Anne Gaertner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research investigated the impact of climate and land cover on water balance components including evapotranspiration and runoff in the mountainous central Appalachian region of the United States. The first studyanalyzed trends in climatologic, hydrologic, and growing season length variables, identified the important variables effecting growing season length changes, and evaluated the influence of a lengthened growing season on increasing evapotranspiration trends. The results showed that growing season length has increased, on average, by ~22 days and evapotranspiration has increased ~12 mm. The second study quantified long-term historical and future climate trends, evaluated water balance sensitivity to change, and quantified …
Modeling Ocean Eddies On Antarctica's Cold Water Continental Shelves And Their Effects On Ice Shelf Basal Melting, Stefanie L. Mack, Michael S. Dinniman, John M. Klinck, Dennis J. Mcgillicuddy, Laurence Padman
Modeling Ocean Eddies On Antarctica's Cold Water Continental Shelves And Their Effects On Ice Shelf Basal Melting, Stefanie L. Mack, Michael S. Dinniman, John M. Klinck, Dennis J. Mcgillicuddy, Laurence Padman
CCPO Publications
Changes in the rate of ocean‐driven basal melting of Antarctica's ice shelves can alter the rate at which the grounded ice sheet loses mass and contributes to sea level change. Melt rates depend on the inflow of ocean heat, which occurs through steady circulation and eddy fluxes. Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of eddy fluxes for ice shelves affected by relatively warm intrusions of Circumpolar Deep Water. However, ice shelves on cold water continental shelves primarily melt from dense shelf water near the grounding line and from light surface water at the ice shelf front. Eddy effects on basal …

Management Strategy Evaluation: Transdisciplinary And Transparent Natural Resource Management, Eileen Hofmann, Lisa Maddison, Ingrid Van Putten
CCPO Publications
Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) is a modelling tool used to evaluate sufficiently realistic simulations of potential policy choices in complex systems. As a contribution to the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) project IMBIZO V, which occurred in October 2017, a workshop was convened with the goal of developing a coherent understanding of best-practice approaches for MSEs. MSEs are becoming standard approaches to characterizing risk across fisheries management organizations globally. MSEs are important tools that aid in delineating objectives, costs, and constraints that define risk and provide a possible mechanism to meet assessment challenges. The MSE workshop considered case studies drawn …

The Southern Ocean is disproportionately important in its effect on the Earth system, impacting climatic, biogeochemical, and ecological systems, which makes recent observed changes to this system cause for global concern. The enhanced understanding and improvements in predictive skill needed for understanding and projecting future states of the Southern Ocean require sustained observations. Over the last decade, the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) has established networks for enhancing regional coordination and research community groups to advance development of observing system capabilities. These networks support delivery of the SOOS 20-year vision, which is to develop a circumpolar system that ensures time …
A New Model For Lifting Condensation Levels Estimation, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.
A New Model For Lifting Condensation Levels Estimation, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Knowledge of and the ability to predict lifting condensation levels (LCL) is important ingredient in weather predictions, cloud formation, planetary albedo and Earth’s energy balance. It is also essential topic in aviation safety and flight operations. In this article, we derive a new model of LCL and compare it to some older commonly-used models. This includes also the recently published Romps’ (2017) model. The new model presented here includes dependence, however weak, of the surface atmospheric pressure and the specific humidity on the LCL height and temperature. Such is not the case with widely used models and expressions by Espy …

Variations In The Abundance And Distribution Of Aggregates In The Ross Sea, Antarctica, Vernon L. Asper, Walker O. Smith
Faculty Publications
The vertical distribution and temporal changes in aggregate abundance and sizes were measured in the Ross Sea, Antarctica between 2002 and 2005 to acquire a more complete understanding of the mechanisms and rates of carbon export from the euphotic layer. Aggregate abundance was determined by photographic techniques, and water column parameters (temperature, salinity, fluorescence, transmissometry) were assessed from CTD profiles. During the first three years the numbers of aggregates increased seasonally, being much more abundant within the upper 200 m in late summer than in early summer from 50 to 100 m (12.5 L–1 in early summer vs. 42.9 …
Holocene Fire History Reconstruction Of A Mid-Evaluation Mixed-Conifer Forest In The Eastern Cascades, Washington, Zoe Rushton
Holocene Fire History Reconstruction Of A Mid-Evaluation Mixed-Conifer Forest In The Eastern Cascades, Washington, Zoe Rushton
All Master's Theses
Fire histories of mid-elevation mixed-conifer forests (MEMC) are uncommon, particularly in the eastern Cascades of Washington. As a result, fire regimes and the effects of 20th century fire suppression in these forests are not well understood. In the summer of 2014 a 7.80 meter-long sediment core was extracted from Long Lake, located approximately 45 km west of Yakima, WA, which exists in a grand fir-dominated mixed-conifer forest. Fire activity for the Long Lake watershed was reconstructed using macroscopic charcoal analysis and pollen analysis was used to reconstruct vegetation change through time. Charcoal results show low fire activity in the early …

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh
Secondary Level Resources
This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Multi-Scale Interactions Between The Diurnal Cycle, The Mjo, And Convectively Coupled Equatorial Waves Over The Maritime Continent, Lakemariam Yohannes Worku
Dissertations
Given the Maritime Continent’s (MC’s) critical role in the global climate, examining variations in diurnal cycle and its interaction with the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin and Equatorial Rossby waves may lead to improved sub-seasonal forecasts. This study used satellite data of TRMM, TRMM Precipitation Features (PFs), and convective classifications from ISCCP. The convection becomes more organized through the afternoon and evening, leading to peak rainfall over the islands around 1800–2100 local standard time (LST). Over the next few hours, some of that rainfall transitions to stratiform rain over land. The convection then propagates offshore overnight with rainfall peaking along the …

Variation in environmental characteristics and divergent selection pressures can drive adaptive differentiation across a species' range. Astrangia poculata is a temperate scleractinian coral that provides unique opportunities to understand the roles of phenotypic plasticity and evolutionary adaptation in coral physiological tolerance limits. A. poculata inhabits hard bottom ecosystems from the northwestern Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico and withstands an annual temperature range up to 20° C. Additionally, A. poculata is facultatively symbiotic and co-occurs in both symbiotic ("brown") and aposymbiotic ("white") states. Here, brown and white A. poculata were collected from Virginia (VA) and Rhode Island (RI), USA and …
