Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Kabatiella caulivora (clover scorch). In contrast to previous years where all overseas introductions and most crossbreds were tested for resistance to Kabatiella, only selected clovers are now being screened so as to reduce the number requiring testing to a manageable size. Root rot resistance screening. One hundred and seven clovers selected as low in formononetin, tolerant of clover scorch, mid to late season maturity, and reasonable winter vigour were tested at two sites for root rot resistance. Bluegreen aphid (BGA) resistance screening. Sub clover screening for bluegreen aphid resistance ranked from tolerant to susceptible (ratings at 49 days from commencement). …

Geologic Investigations In The Cayman Trough And The Nature Of The Plutonic Foundation Of The Oceanic Crust, Janet B. Stroup Jan 1981

Geologic Investigations In The Cayman Trough And The Nature Of The Plutonic Foundation Of The Oceanic Crust, Janet B. Stroup

Geology Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the literature that deals with the gabbroic rocks believed to comprise the foundation of the oceanic crust indicates that the overwhelming majority of these rocks are recovered from escarpments associated with transform faults. The wide range of mineral and chemical compositions characterizing oceanic gabbroic rocks suggests that the lower oceanic crust is much more heterogeneous in nature than was previously suggested by the results of geophysical investigations. The examination of gabbroic rocks recovered in situ from the walls of the Mid-Cayman Rise rift valley by the submersible ALVIN not only supports the notion that oceanic gabbroic rocks …

A Pleistocene Sand Sea On The Alaskan Arctic Coastal Plain, L. David Carter Jan 1981

A Pleistocene Sand Sea On The Alaskan Arctic Coastal Plain, L. David Carter

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A ridge and thermokarst-basin landscape that is strikingly portrayed in Landsat winter imagery consists of large Pleistocene dunes that have been modified by younger eolian activity and thermokarst processes. This is the most extensive area of large stabilized dunes yet reported in the North American Arctic; the landscape is ofparticular interest because it has been proposed as a$rst-order analog for martian fretted terrain. Recognition of the large dunes permits a new interpretation for linear and curvilinear trends visible in Landsat summer imagery.

Emission Rates Of Co2 From Plume Measurements., D. M. Harris, M. Sato, T. J. Casadevall, William I. Rose, T. J. Bornhorst

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Most of the CO2 that emanated from Mount St. Helens became part of the gas plume as it moved away from the volcano. An airborne technique was developed for continuous sampling and infrared analysis for CO2 in the plume. The CO2-emission rates were determined by measuring the area, the horizontal velocity, and the CO2 concentration anomaly in vertical cross sections of the plume The emission rate varied from 2100 t/day to about 22 000 t/day.-from Author

Radar Observations Of Ash Eruptions, D. M. Harris, William I. Rose, R. Roe, M. R. Thompson

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Radar systems located at Portland, Oreg., Seattle, Wash., and near Spokane, Wash., have been used extensively for observations of ash clouds from explosive volcanic eruptions at Mount St. Helens during 1980. Eruption clouds are composed of silicate particles and are therefore detectable by radar. Radar observations can be made at night and in overcast weather when conventional observations of eruptions are difficult.-from Authors

Role Of Gulf Stream Frontal Eddies In Forming Phytoplankton Patches On The Outer Southeastern Shelf, James A. Yoder, Larry P. Atkinson, Thomas N. Lee, Hongsuk H. Kim, Charles R. Mcclain

CCPO Publications

Continuous surface mapping of temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll along a 300-km segment of the Gulf Stream cyclonic front defined the spatial scales of a large diatom patch that persisted throughout a 10-day study. The patch was localized in the upwelled cold core of a Gulf Stream frontal eddy centered over the 200-m isobaths off Jacksonville, Florida, in April 1979. The µ g liter-1 surface chlorophyll isopleth enclosed an area >1,000km2 with an alongshore dimension of 130km. Surface chlorophyll exceeded 5µg liter-1 within the upwelled cold core of the eddy, 10-100X higher than concentrations in Gulf Stream or …

Comparison Of Benthic Oxygen Demand Measurement Techniques, Thomas V. Belanger Jan 1981

Comparison Of Benthic Oxygen Demand Measurement Techniques, Thomas V. Belanger

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Several common methods to measure benthic oxygen demand were compared using measured and literature data. An in situ respirometer technique, a laboratory core-uptake technique and a laboratory flow-through system technique were compared on sand and organic sediment in Lake Washington, Florida. In situ uptake rates were significantly higher than core uptake rates, and this difference was greater for highly organic sediment than sand sediment. Measured and literature uptake values for in situ respirometer and core-uptake techniques with organic sediment were compared and resulted in a relationship (r = .99; P< .01) of the form: in situ uptake (g 2/m 2-hr) = .036 + 1.16 core uptake (g 2/m 2-hr). In many cases both coreuptake and in situ respirometer techniques under estimate oxygen consumption, due to difficulties in obtaining correct water velocities over the sediment surface. In the flow-through system studies, sediment oxygen uptake varied considerably with flow rate and a significant logarithmic relationship (P<.01) was obtained with Lake Apopka, Florida organic sediment. Measurement techniques that simulate field flows are the most accurate, such as the flow through system or the in situ tunnel respirometer technique.

Planktonic Foraminifera Collected By The R/V Melville (1972) In The Southwest Atlantic, Haydee Lena, Silvia Watanabe, Sara Souto Jan 1981

Planktonic Foraminifera Collected By The R/V Melville (1972) In The Southwest Atlantic, Haydee Lena, Silvia Watanabe, Sara Souto

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The planktonic foraminiferal fauna was studied from 186 samples collected by the R/V Melville in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean during 1972. The samples were collected in the surface layer (horizontal tows) and throughout the water column from 500-0 m. (vertical tows). Twenty species were recognized (some with various formae). These species can be divided according to their temperature requirements into cold-temperate, warm-temperate, warm and cosmopolitan species. Based on the distribution of these species, 4 types of surface water were determined.

Selected Trace Metals In The Upper St. Johns River And Their Land Use Relationships, Jeffrey A. Leed, Thomas V. Belanger Jan 1981

Selected Trace Metals In The Upper St. Johns River And Their Land Use Relationships, Jeffrey A. Leed, Thomas V. Belanger

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Iron, copper and zinc were monitored in the water, sediments, and 4 species of fish of the upper St. Johns River, Florida. Surface water concentrations of total iron commonly exceeded 300 ug/l, the standard established by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation for waters intended for public consumption (Class I waters). Total iron levels in the upper St. Johns River are regulated by a series of interacting natural processes such as the ironphosphate cycle, inputs from nonartesian groundwater or bank seepage, complexation with dissolved organic compounds, increased land runoff during perids of high flow, and resuspension of bottom sediments during …

Infrared Absorption Study Of Humic Substances From Lake Apopka Sediment, Plankton And The Surrounding Drainage Basin, Thomas V. Belanger Jan 1981

Infrared Absorption Study Of Humic Substances From Lake Apopka Sediment, Plankton And The Surrounding Drainage Basin, Thomas V. Belanger

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Infrared absorption spectra were run on humic substances from Lake Apopka sediment samples and compared with spectra from citrus and muck farm humic substances from sediment in the surrounding drainage basin, and also with spectra from autochthonous plankton humic substances. The 1540 cm'1 and 1650 cm' 1 peaks in the plankton and lake sediment samples, in addition to other spectra similarities, indicate that plankton is the probable precursor of lake sediment humic substances. The absorption bands at 1650 cm 1 and 1540 cm 1 are thought to be due to peptide bonds in protein, with amide I absorption occurring at …

Numerical Model Simulation Of Offshore Flow During The Winter Season, Maria Cintia Piccolo Jan 1981

Numerical Model Simulation Of Offshore Flow During The Winter Season, Maria Cintia Piccolo

OES Theses and Dissertations

Because of the step function variability of heat and moisture flux in coastal zones, adequate descriptive models of mesoscale coastal circulation and weather patterns demand high spatial resolution in the analysis of wind, temperature and moisture patterns. To obtain realistic concepts of offshore flow the sparse offshore data networks need to be supplemented by mesoscale numerical models. The problems associated with the modeling of offshore flow across the east coast of the United States during the winter season have been investigated with a simple two dimensional numerical model of the planetary boundary layer.

The model has two predictive equations for …
