On Properties Of Positive Semigroups In Lattices And Totally Real Number Fields, Siki Wang Jan 2021

On Properties Of Positive Semigroups In Lattices And Totally Real Number Fields, Siki Wang

CMC Senior Theses

In this thesis, we give estimates on the successive minima of positive semigroups in lattices and ideals in totally real number fields. In Chapter 1 we give a brief overview of the thesis, while Chapters 2 – 4 provide expository material on some fundamental theorems about lattices, number fields and height functions, hence setting the necessary background for the original results presented in Chapter 5. The results in Chapter 5 can be summarized as follows. For a full-rank lattice L ⊂ Rd, we are concerned with the semigroup L+ ⊆ L, which denotes the set of all vectors with nonnegative …

Solubility Of Additive Forms Over Local Fields, Drew Duncan Jan 2021

Solubility Of Additive Forms Over Local Fields, Drew Duncan

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Michael Knapp, in a previous work, conjectured that every additive sextic form over $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})$ in seven variables has a nontrivial zero. In this dissertation, I show that this conjecture is true, establishing that $$\Gamma^*(6, \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1})) = \Gamma^*(6, \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})) = 7.$$ I then determine the minimal number of variables $\Gamma^*(d, K)$ which guarantees a nontrivial solution for every additive form of degree $d=2m$, $m$ odd, $m \ge 3$ over the six ramified quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$. We prove that if $$K \in \{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{10}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-10})\},$$ then $$\Gamma^*(d,K) = \frac{3}{2}d,$$ and if $$K \in \{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})\},$$ then $$\Gamma^*(d,K) = …

Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu Dec 2020

Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In Calculus we learned that 􏰅Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{􏰅n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …

On The Local Theory Of Profinite Groups, Mohammad Shatnawi Dec 2020

On The Local Theory Of Profinite Groups, Mohammad Shatnawi

Dissertations

Let G be a finite group, and H be a subgroup of G. The transfer homomorphism emerges from the natural action of G on the cosets of H. The transfer was first introduced by Schur in 1902 [22] as a construction in group theory, which produce a homomorphism from a finite group G into H/H' an abelian group where H is a subgroup of G and H' is the derived group of H. One important first application is Burnside’s normal p-complement theorem [5] in 1911, although he did not use the transfer homomorphism explicitly to prove it. …

The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley Nov 2020

The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The Name Tag Problem is a thought experiment that, when formalized, serves as an introduction to the concept of an orthomorphism of $\Zn$. Orthomorphisms are a type of group permutation and their graphs are used to construct mutually orthogonal Latin squares, affine planes and other objects. This paper walks through the formalization of the Name Tag Problem and its linear solutions, which center around modular arithmetic. The characterization of which linear mappings give rise to these solutions developed in this paper can be used to calculate the exact number of linear orthomorphisms for any additive group Z/nZ, which is demonstrated …

New Theorems For The Digraphs Of Commutative Rings, Morgan Bounds Nov 2020

New Theorems For The Digraphs Of Commutative Rings, Morgan Bounds

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The digraphs of commutative rings under modular arithmetic reveal intriguing cycle patterns, many of which have yet to be explained. To help illuminate these patterns, we establish a set of new theorems. Rings with relatively prime moduli a and b are used to predict cycles in the digraph of the ring with modulus ab. Rings that use Pythagorean primes as their modulus are shown to always have a cycle in common. Rings with perfect square moduli have cycles that relate to their square root.

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya Sep 2020

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Facuty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

Harmony Amid Chaos, Drew Schaffner Jul 2020

Harmony Amid Chaos, Drew Schaffner

Pence-Boyce STEM Student Scholarship

We provide a brief but intuitive study on the subjects from which Galois Fields have emerged and split our study up into two categories: harmony and chaos. Specifically, we study finite fields with elements where is prime. Such a finite field can be defined through a logarithm table. The Harmony Section is where we provide three proofs about the overall symmetry and structure of the Galois Field as well as several observations about the order within a given table. In the Chaos Section we make two attempts to analyze the tables, the first by methods used by Vladimir Arnold as …

The Distribution Of The Greatest Common Divisor Of Elements In Quadratic Integer Rings, Asimina S. Hamakiotes May 2020

The Distribution Of The Greatest Common Divisor Of Elements In Quadratic Integer Rings, Asimina S. Hamakiotes

Student Theses and Dissertations

For a pair of quadratic integers n and m chosen randomly, uniformly, and independently from the set of quadratic integers of norm x or less, we calculate the probability that the greatest common divisor of (n,m) is k. We also calculate the expected norm of the greatest common divisor (n,m) as x tends to infinity, with explicit error terms. We determine the probability and expected norm of the greatest common divisor for quadratic integer rings that are unique factorization domains. We also outline a method to determine the probability and expected norm of the greatest …

Symmetric Presentations And Related Topics, Mayra Mcgrath

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this thesis, we have investigated several permutation and monomialprogenitors for finite images. We have found original symmetric presen-tations for several important non-abelian simple groups, including lineargroups, unitary groups, alternating groups, and sporadic simple groups. We have found a number of finite images, including : L(2,41), PSL(2,11)×2, L(2,8), and L(2,19), as homomorphic images of the permutation progenitors. We have also found PGL(2,16) : 2 =Aut(PSL(2,16)) and PSL(2,16) as homomorphic images of monomial progenitors. We have performed manual double coset enumeration of finte images. In addition, we have given the isomorphism class of each image that we have discovered. Presentation for all …

Classification Of Torsion Subgroups For Mordell Curves, Zachary Porat Mar 2020

Classification Of Torsion Subgroups For Mordell Curves, Zachary Porat

Honors Theses

Elliptic curves are an interesting area of study in mathematics, laying at the intersection of algebra, geometry, and number theory. They are a powerful tool, having applications in everything from Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem to cybersecurity. In this paper, we first provide an introduction to elliptic curves by discussing their geometry and associated group structure. We then narrow our focus, further investigating the torsion subgroups of elliptic curves. In particular, we will examine two methods used to classify these subgroups. We finish by employing these methods to categorize the torsion subgroups for a specific family of elliptic …

N-Cycle Splines Over Sexy Rings, Jacob Tilden Cummings Jan 2020

N-Cycle Splines Over Sexy Rings, Jacob Tilden Cummings

Senior Projects Spring 2020

In this project we abstract the work of previous bard students by introducing the concept of splines over non-integers, non-euclidean domains, and even non-PIDs. We focus on n-cycles for some natural number n. We show that the concept of flow up class bases exist in PID splines the same way they do in integer splines, remarking the complications and intricacies that arise when abstracting from the integers to PIDs. We also start from scratch by finding a flow up class basis for n-cycle splines over the real numbers adjoin two indeterminates, denoted R[x,y] which necessitate more original techniques.

Simultaneous Zeros Of A System Of Two Quadratic Forms, Nandita Sahajpal Jan 2020

Simultaneous Zeros Of A System Of Two Quadratic Forms, Nandita Sahajpal

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation we investigate the existence of a nontrivial solution to a system of two quadratic forms over local fields and global fields. We specifically study a system of two quadratic forms over an arbitrary number field. The questions that are of particular interest are:

  1. How many variables are necessary to guarantee a nontrivial zero to a system of two quadratic forms over a global field or a local field? In other words, what is the u-invariant of a pair of quadratic forms over any global or local field?
  2. What is the relation between u-invariants of a …

Introduction To Neutroalgebraic Structures And Antialgebraic Structures (Revisited), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2020

Introduction To Neutroalgebraic Structures And Antialgebraic Structures (Revisited), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In all classical algebraic structures, the Laws of Compositions on a given set are well-defined. But this is a restrictive case, because there are many more situations in science and in any domain of knowledge when a law of composition defined on a set may be only partially-defined (or partially true) and partially-undefined (or partially false), that we call NeutroDefined, or totally undefined (totally false) that we call AntiDefined. Again, in all classical algebraic structures, the Axioms (Associativity, Commutativity, etc.) defined on a set are totally true, but it is again a restrictive case, because similarly there are numerous situations …

Codes, Cryptography, And The Mceliece Cryptosystem, Bethany Matsick Jan 2020

Codes, Cryptography, And The Mceliece Cryptosystem, Bethany Matsick

Senior Honors Theses

Over the past several decades, technology has continued to develop at an incredible rate, and the importance of properly securing information has increased significantly. While a variety of encryption schemes currently exist for this purpose, a number of them rely on problems, such as integer factorization, that are not resistant to quantum algorithms. With the reality of quantum computers approaching, it is critical that a quantum-resistant method of protecting information is found. After developing the proper background, we evaluate the potential of the McEliece cryptosystem for use in the post-quantum era by examining families of algebraic geometry codes that allow …

Fibonacci And Lucas Identities From Toeplitz–Hessenberg Matrices, Taras Goy, Mark Shattuck Dec 2019

Fibonacci And Lucas Identities From Toeplitz–Hessenberg Matrices, Taras Goy, Mark Shattuck

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider determinants for some families of Toeplitz–Hessenberg matrices having various translates of the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers for the nonzero entries. These determinant formulas may also be rewritten as identities involving sums of products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers and multinomial coefficients. Combinatorial proofs are provided of several of the determinants which make use of sign-changing involutions and the definition of the determinant as a signed sum over the symmetric group. This leads to a common generalization of the Fibonacci and Lucas determinant formulas in terms of the so-called Gibonacci numbers.

Hankel Rhotrices And Constructions Of Maximum Distance Separable Rhotrices Over Finite Fields, P. L. Sharma, Arun Kumar, Shalini Gupta Dec 2019

Hankel Rhotrices And Constructions Of Maximum Distance Separable Rhotrices Over Finite Fields, P. L. Sharma, Arun Kumar, Shalini Gupta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Many block ciphers in cryptography use Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) matrices to strengthen the diffusion layer. Rhotrices are represented by coupled matrices. Therefore, use of rhotrices in the cryptographic ciphers doubled the security of the cryptosystem. We define Hankel rhotrix and further construct the maximum distance separable rhotrices over finite fields.

Let k be the finite field with q elements, let F be the field of Laurent series in the variable 1/t with coefficients in k, and let A be the polynomial ring in the variable t with coefficients in k. Let SLn(F) be the ring of nxn-matrices with entries in F, and determinant 1. Given a polynomial g in A, let Gamma(g) subset SLn(F) be the full congruence subgroup of level g. In this thesis we examine the action of Gamma(g) on the Bruhat-Tits building Xn associated to SLn(F) for n equals 2 and n equals 3. Our first main …

Zeta Functions Of Classical Groups And Class Two Nilpotent Groups, Fikreab Solomon Admasu Sep 2019

Zeta Functions Of Classical Groups And Class Two Nilpotent Groups, Fikreab Solomon Admasu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is concerned with zeta functions and generating series associated with two families of groups that are intimately connected with each other: classical groups and class two nilpotent groups. Indeed, the zeta functions of classical groups count some special subgroups in class two nilpotent groups.

In the first chapter, we provide new expressions for the zeta functions of symplectic groups and even orthogonal groups in terms of the cotype zeta function of the integer lattice. In his paper on universal $p$-adic zeta functions, J. Igusa computed explicit formulae for the zeta functions of classical algebraic groups. These zeta functions …

The Last Digits Of Infinity (On Tetrations Under Modular Rings), William Stowe Jun 2019

The Last Digits Of Infinity (On Tetrations Under Modular Rings), William Stowe

Celebration of Learning

A tetration is defined as repeated exponentiation. As an example, 2 tetrated 4 times is 2^(2^(2^2)) = 2^16. Tetrated numbers grow rapidly; however, we will see that when tetrating where computations are performed mod n for some positive integer n, there is convergent behavior. We will show that, in general, this convergent behavior will always show up.

Enhanced Koszulity In Galois Cohomology, Marina Palaisti Mar 2019

Enhanced Koszulity In Galois Cohomology, Marina Palaisti

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Despite their central role in Galois theory, absolute Galois groups remain rather mysterious; and one of the main problems of modern Galois theory is to characterize which profinite groups are realizable as absolute Galois groups over a prescribed field. Obtaining detailed knowledge of Galois cohomology is an important step to answering this problem. In our work we study various forms of enhanced Koszulity for quadratic algebras. Each has its own importance, but the common ground is that they all imply Koszulity. Applying this to Galois cohomology, we prove that, in all known cases of finitely generated pro-$p$-groups, Galois cohomology is …

The Conditional Probability That An Elliptic Curve Has A Rational Subgroup Of Order 5 Or 7, Meagan Kenney Jan 2019

The Conditional Probability That An Elliptic Curve Has A Rational Subgroup Of Order 5 Or 7, Meagan Kenney

Senior Projects Spring 2019

Let E be an elliptic curve over the rationals. There are two different ways in which the set of rational points on E can be said to be divisible by a prime p. We will call one of these types of divisibility local and the other global. Global divisibility will imply local divisibility; however, the converse is not guaranteed. In this project we focus on the cases where p=5 and p=7 to determine the probability that E has global divisibility by p, given that E has local divisibility by p.

Factorization Lengths In Numerical Monoids, Maya Samantha Schwartz Jan 2019

Factorization Lengths In Numerical Monoids, Maya Samantha Schwartz

Senior Projects Spring 2019

A numerical monoid M generated by the natural numbers n_1, ..., n_k is a subset of {0, 1, 2, ...} whose elements are non-negative linear combinations of the generators n_1, ..., n_k. The set of factorizations of an element in M is the set of all the different ways to write that element as a linear combination of the generators. The length of a factorization of an element is the sum of the coefficients of that factorization. Since an element in a monoid can be written in different ways in terms of the generators, its set of factorization lengths may …

The main objective of this project is to find the original symmetric presentations of some very important finite groups and to give our constructions of some of these groups. We have found the Mathieu sporadic group M11, HS × D5, where HS is the sporadic group Higman-Sim group, the projective special unitary group U(3; 5) and the projective special linear group L2(149) as homomorphic images of the monomial progenitors 11*4 :m (5 :4), 5*6 :m S5 and 149*2 :m D37. Distributive Lattice Models Of The Type C One-Rowed Weyl Group Symmetric Functions, William Atkins Jan 2018

Distributive Lattice Models Of The Type C One-Rowed Weyl Group Symmetric Functions, William Atkins

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

We present two families of diamond-colored distributive lattices – one known and one new – that we can show are models of the type C one-rowed Weyl symmetric functions. These lattices are constructed using certain sequences of positive integers that are visualized as filling the boxes of one-rowed partition diagrams. We show how natural orderings of these one-rowed tableaux produce our distributive lattices as sublattices of a more general object, and how a natural coloring of the edges of the associated order diagrams yields a certain diamond-coloring property. We show that each edge-colored lattice possesses a certain structure that is …

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang Jan 2018

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang

Honors Theses

Galois theory, named after French mathematician Evariste Galois in 19th-century, is an important part of abstract algebra. It brings together many different branches of mathematics by providing connections among fields, polynomials, and groups.

Specifically, Galois theory allows us to attach a finite field extension with a finite group. We call such a group the Galois group of the finite field extension. A typical way to attain a finite field extension to compute the splitting field of some polynomial. So we can always start with a polynomial and find the finite group associate to the field extension on its splitting field. …
