The acoustic guitar is a stringed instrument, often made of wood, that transduces vibrational energy of steel strings into coupled vibrations of the wood and acoustic pressure waves in the air. Variations in wood selection and instrument geometry have been shown to affect the timbre of the acoustic guitar. Computational methods were utilized to investigate the impact of material properties on acoustic performance. Sitka spruce was deemed the most suitable wood for guitar soundboards due to its acoustic characteristics, strength, and uniform aesthetic. Music develops and appears as we allow numbers to acquire a dynamical aspect and create, through their growth, the various keys that permit the richness of the musical texture. This idea was simply adumbrated in Plato’s work, but its importance to his philosophical worldview cannot be underestimated. In this paper we begin by discussing what is probably the first written record of an attempt to create a good temperament and then follow the Pythagoreans approach, whose problems forced musicians, over the next several centuries up to the Renaissance and early modern times, to come up with many different variations.

Iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations – such as stationary, semi-iterative, and Krylov subspace methods – are classical methods taught in numerical analysis courses, but adapting these methods to run efficiently at large-scale on high-performance computers is challenging and a constantly evolving topic. Pitch discrimination ability has been of research interest due to its potential relationship to language and literacy. However, assessment protocols for pitch discrimination have varied widely. Prior studies with both children and adults have produced conflicting performance findings across different pitch discrimination research paradigms, though they have consistently shown that discrimination accuracy is based on the psychophysical assessment method applied. In the present study, we examined pitch discrimination performance among convenience samples of 19 adult women and ten female children across six different adaptive psychophysical measurement conditions. In many applications constant or piecewise constant refractive index profiles are used to study the scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by a spherical object. When the structured media has variable refractive indices, this is more of a challenge. In this paper, we investigate the morphology dependent resonances for the scattering of electromagnetic waves from two concentric spheres when the outer shell has a variable refractive index. The resonance analysis is applied to the general solutions of the radial Debye potential for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric modes. An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a sequence of unit-norm vectors in a Euclidean space whose coherence achieves equality in the Welch bound, and thus yields an optimal packing in a projective space. A regular simplex is a simple type of ETF in which the number of vectors is one more than the dimension of the underlying space. More sophisticated examples include harmonic ETFs which equate to difference sets in finite abelian groups. Recently, it was shown that some harmonic ETFs are comprised of regular simplices. We discuss the mathematics behind the Pan’s flute. We analyze how the sound is created, the relationship between the notes that the pipes produce, their frequencies and the length of the pipes. We find an equation which models the curve that appears at the bottom of any Pan’s flute due to the different pipe lengths.

Operator algebras generated by partial isometries and their adjoints form the basis for some of the most well studied classes of C*-algebras. Representations of such algebras encode the dynamics of orthonormal sets in a Hilbert space.We instigate a research program on concrete operator algebras that model the dynamics of Hilbert space frames.
The primary object of this thesis is the norm-closed operator algebra generated by a left invertible $T$ together with its Moore-Penrose inverse $T^\dagger$. We denote this algebra by $\mathfrac{A}_T$. In the isometric case, $T^\dagger = T^*$ and $\mathfrac{A}_T$ is a representation of the Toeplitz algebra. Of particular interest …

We consider a complex representation of an arbitrary planar polygon P centered at the origin. Let P(1) be the normalized polygon obtained from P by connecting the midpoints of its sides and normalizing the complex vector of vertex coordinates. We say that P(1) is a normalized average of P. We identify this averaging process with a special case of a circular convolution. We show that if the convolution is repeated many times, then for a large class of polygons the vertices of the limiting polygon lie either on an ellipse or on a star-shaped polygon. We study two questions. When does a function belong to the union of Lebesgue spaces, and when does a function have an A1 majorant? We provide a systematic study of these questions and show that they are fundamentally related. We show that the union ofLwp(ℝn)spaces withw∈Apis equal to the union of all Banach function spaces for which the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function is bounded on the space itself and its associate space.

We give a number of explicit matrix-algorithms for analysis/synthesis
in multi-phase filtering; i.e., the operation on discrete-time signals which
allow a separation into frequency-band components, one for each of the
ranges of bands, say N , starting with low-pass, and then corresponding
filtering in the other band-ranges. If there are N bands, the individual
filters will be combined into a single matrix action; so a representation of

We consider conditions on a given system F of vectors in Hilbert space H, forming a frame, which turn Hinto a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. It is assumed that the vectors in F are functions on some set Ω . We then identify conditions on these functions which automatically give H the structure of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space of functions on Ω. We further give an explicit formula for the kernel, and for the corresponding isometric isomorphism. Applications are given to Hilbert spaces associated to families of Gaussian processes.

The main goal of this paper is to present new transformations, previously non-existent in traditional mathematics, that we call centric mathematics (CM) but that became possible due to the new born eccentric mathematics, and, implicitly, to the supermathematics (SM).
As shown in this work, the new geometric transformations, namely conversion or transfiguration, wipe the boundaries between discrete and continuous geometric forms, showing that the first ones are also continuous, being just apparently discontinuous.

The focus of the internship has been on two topics: a) Characterize the drilling performance of a novel percussive augmenter – this drill was developed by the JPL’s Advanced Technologies Group and its performance was characterized; and b) Examine the feasibility of striking a pipe as a means of assessing the water height inside the pipe. Interpolation by various types of splines is the standard procedure in many applications. In this paper we discuss harmonic spline “interpolation” (on the lines of a grid) as an alternative to polynomial spline interpolation (at vertices of a grid). We will discuss some advantages and drawbacks of this approach and present the asymptotics of the Lp-error for adaptive approximation by harmonic splines.

The theory of supercharacters, which generalizes classical character theory, was recently introduced by P. Diaconis and I.M. Isaacs, building upon earlier work of C. Andre. We study supercharacter theories on $(Z/nZ)^d$ induced by the actions of certain matrix groups, demonstrating that a variety of exponential sums of interest in number theory (e.g., Gauss, Ramanujan, and Kloosterman sums) arise in this manner. We develop a generalization of the discrete Fourier transform, in which supercharacters play the role of the Fourier exponential basis. We provide a corresponding uncertainty principle and compute the associated constants in several cases.

The theory of supercharacters, recently developed by Diaconis-Isaacs and Andre, can be used to derive the fundamental algebraic properties of Ramanujan sums. This machinery frequently yields one-line proofs of difficult identities and provides many novel formulas. In addition to exhibiting a new application of supercharacter theory, this article also serves as a blueprint for future work since some of the abstract results we develop are applicable in much greater generality.

We analyze the drunkard's walk on the unit sphere with step size θ and show that the walk converges in order C/sin2(θ) steps in the discrepancy metric (C a constant). This is an application of techniques we develop for bounding the discrepancy of random walks on Gelfand pairs generated by bi-invariant measures. In such cases, Fourier analysis on the acting group admits tractable computations involving spherical functions. We advocate the use of discrepancy as a metric on probabilities for state spaces with isometric group actions.

We generalize biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds into the case of the domain being V-manifolds. We obtain the first and second variations of biharmonic maps on V-manifolds. Since a biharmonic map from a compact V-manifold into a Riemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature is harmonic, we construct a biharmonic non-harmonic map into a sphere. We also show that under certain condition the biharmonic property of f implies the harmonic property of f. We finally discuss the composition of biharmonic maps on V-manifolds.
