Applications Of Geometric And Spectral Methods In Graph Theory, Lauren Morey Nelsen Jan 2019

Applications Of Geometric And Spectral Methods In Graph Theory, Lauren Morey Nelsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Networks, or graphs, are useful for studying many things in today’s world. Graphs can be used to represent connections on social media, transportation networks, or even the internet. Because of this, it’s helpful to study graphs and learn what we can say about the structure of a given graph or what properties it might have. This dissertation focuses on the use of the probabilistic method and spectral graph theory to understand the geometric structure of graphs and find structures in graphs. We will also discuss graph curvature and how curvature lower bounds can be used to give us information about …

Using A Discursive Framework To Analyze Geometric Learning And Instruction, Peter Wiles, Rick Anderson Jan 2019

Using A Discursive Framework To Analyze Geometric Learning And Instruction, Peter Wiles, Rick Anderson

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In this study we applied a discursive perspective of learning (Sfard, 2008) to a sequence of 21 geometry mini-lessons taught in a fourth grade classroom. From this perspective, learning is defined as changes in mathematical discourse. We first characterize and then compare discourse from the beginning and the end of the mini-lesson sequence. We identify shifts in the discourse that occurred during the sequence. We then discuss how the characteristics of the st geometric discourse informed task design and instruction. This perspective provided a useful means for linking instruction to student learning in an operationalized manner.

Enhancing The Quandle Coloring Invariant For Knots And Links, Karina Elle Cho Jan 2019

Enhancing The Quandle Coloring Invariant For Knots And Links, Karina Elle Cho

HMC Senior Theses

Quandles, which are algebraic structures related to knots, can be used to color knot diagrams, and the number of these colorings is called the quandle coloring invariant. We strengthen the quandle coloring invariant by considering a graph structure on the space of quandle colorings of a knot, and we call our graph the quandle coloring quiver. This structure is a categorification of the quandle coloring invariant. Then, we strengthen the quiver by decorating it with Boltzmann weights. Explicit examples of links that show that our enhancements are proper are provided, as well as background information in quandle theory.

Spacetime Groups, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre Jan 2019

Spacetime Groups, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre

Publications

A spacetime group is a connected 4-dimensional Lie group G endowed with a left invariant Lorentz metric h and such that the connected component of the isometry group of h is G itself. The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to give an algebraic classification of spacetime groups, that is, we determine a complete list of inequivalent spacetime Lie algebras, which are pairs (g,η), with g being a 4-dimensional Lie algebra and η being a Lorentzian inner product on g. A full analysis of the equivalence problem for spacetime Lie algebras is given which leads to a completely algorithmic solution to the …

Quantum Isometry Group Of Deformation: A Counterexample, Debashish Goswami, Arnab Mandal Jan 2019

Quantum Isometry Group Of Deformation: A Counterexample, Debashish Goswami, Arnab Mandal

Journal Articles

We give a counterexample to show that the quantum isometry group of a deformed finite dimensional spectral triple may not be isomorphic with a deformation of the quantum isometry group of the undeformed spectral triple.

The Use Of 3-D Highway Differential Geometry In Crash Prediction Modeling, Kiriakos Amiridis Jan 2019

The Use Of 3-D Highway Differential Geometry In Crash Prediction Modeling, Kiriakos Amiridis

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The objective of this research is to evaluate and introduce a new methodology regarding rural highway safety. Current practices rely on crash prediction models that utilize specific explanatory variables, whereas the depository of knowledge for past research is the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). Most of the prediction models in the HSM identify the effect of individual geometric elements on crash occurrence and consider their combination in a multiplicative manner, where each effect is multiplied with others to determine their combined influence. The concepts of 3-dimesnional (3-D) representation of the roadway surface have also been explored in the past aiming to …

Student's Self Discovery Of Right Triangle Trigonometry., Elizabeth Dereu Jan 2019

Student's Self Discovery Of Right Triangle Trigonometry., Elizabeth Dereu

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Research has shown that right triangle trigonometry poses a significant learning challenge for high school geometry students. One potential source of this challenge is the tendency for students to experience right triangle trig as an exclusively action-oriented set of strategies (i.e. SOHCAHTOA). This article describes a teaching experiment where students built understanding of right triangle trig using a unique set of manipulatives and direct measurement. Results of the experiment show that the lessons provided opportunities for students to develop their understanding beyond action-oriented strategies.

Riemann-Hilbert Problem, Integrability And Reductions, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Aleksander Stefanov Jan 2019

Riemann-Hilbert Problem, Integrability And Reductions, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Aleksander Stefanov

Articles

Abstract. The present paper is dedicated to integrable models with Mikhailov reduction groups GR ≃ Dh. Their Lax representation allows us to prove, that their solution is equivalent to solving Riemann-Hilbert problems, whose contours depend on the realization of the GR-action on the spectral parameter. Two new examples of Nonlinear Evolution Equations (NLEE) with Dh symmetries are presented.

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K Jan 2019

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors study special type of subset vertex multi subgraphs; these multi subgraphs can be directed or otherwise. Another special feature of these subset vertex multigraphs is that we are aware of the elements in each vertex set and how it affects the structure of both subset vertex multisubgraphs and edge multisubgraphs. It is pertinent to record at this juncture that certain ego centric directed multistar graphs become empty on the removal of one edge, there by theorising the importance, and giving certain postulates how to safely form ego centric multi networks. Given any subset vertex multigraph we …

Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft Set, Construction Of Operators And Their Application In Frequency Matrix Multi Attribute Decision Making Technique, Florentin Smarandache, Shazia Rana, Madiha Qayyum, Muhammad Saeed, Bakhtawar Ali Khan Jan 2019

Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft Set, Construction Of Operators And Their Application In Frequency Matrix Multi Attribute Decision Making Technique, Florentin Smarandache, Shazia Rana, Madiha Qayyum, Muhammad Saeed, Bakhtawar Ali Khan

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, initially a matrix representation of Plithogenic Hypersoft Set (PHSS) is introduced and then with the help of this matrix some local operators for Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (PFHSS) are developed. These local operators are used to generalize PFHSS to Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft set (PFWHSS). The generalized PFWHSS set is hybridization of Fuzzy Hypersoft set (which represent multiattributes and their subattributes as a combined whole membership i.e. case of having an exterior view of the event) and the Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (in which multi attributes and their subattributes are represented with individual memberships case of having …

K -Isocoronal Tilings, Eduard C. Taganap, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas Jan 2019

K -Isocoronal Tilings, Eduard C. Taganap, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, a framework is presented that allows the systematic derivation of planar edge-to-edge k-isocoronal tilings from tile-s-transitive tilings, s k. A tiling T is k-isocoronal if its vertex coronae form k orbits or k transitivity classes under the action of its symmetry group. The vertex corona of a vertex x of T is used to refer to the tiles that are incident to x. The k-isocoronal tilings include the vertex-k-transitive tilings (k-isogonal) and k-uniform tilings. In a vertex-k- transitive tiling, the vertices form k transitivity classes under its symmetry group. If this tiling consists of regular polygons then …

Barrier Graphs And Extremal Questions On Line, Ray, Segment, And Hyperplane Sensor Networks, Kirk Anthony Boyer Jan 2019

Barrier Graphs And Extremal Questions On Line, Ray, Segment, And Hyperplane Sensor Networks, Kirk Anthony Boyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A sensor network is typically modeled as a collection of spatially distributed objects with the same shape, generally for the purpose of surveilling or protecting areas and locations. In this dissertation we address several questions relating to sensors with linear shapes: line, line segment, and rays in the plane, and hyperplanes in higher dimensions.

First we explore ray sensor networks in the plane, whose resilience is the number of sensors that must be crossed by an agent traveling between two known locations. The coverage of such a network is described by a particular tripartite graph, the barrier graph of the …
