On Quasi-Uniform Box Products, Hope Sabao, Olivier Olela Otafudu
On Quasi-Uniform Box Products, Hope Sabao, Olivier Olela Otafudu
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
In this talk, we preset the quasi-uniform box product, a topology that is finer than the Tychonov product topology but coarser than the uniform box product.
We then present various notions of completeness of a quasi-uniform space that are preserved by their quasi-uniform box product using Cauchy filter pairs.
Uncountably Many Quasi-Isometry Classes Of Groups Of Type Fp, Ignat Soroko, Robert Kropholler, Ian Leary
Uncountably Many Quasi-Isometry Classes Of Groups Of Type Fp, Ignat Soroko, Robert Kropholler, Ian Leary
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
An interplay between algebra and topology goes in many ways. Given a space X, we can study its homology and homotopy groups. In the other direction, given a group G, we can form its Eilenberg-Maclane space K(G, 1). It is natural to wish that it is `small' in some sense. If K(G, 1) space has n-skeleton with finitely many cells, then G is said to have type Fn. Such groups act naturally on the cellular chain complex of the universal cover for K(G, 1), which has finitely generated free modules in all dimensions up to n. On the …

On Continua With Regular Non-Abelian Self Covers, Mathew Timm
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
We look at a planar 2-dimensional continuum X which satisfy the following:
Given any finite group G there is an |G|-fold regular self cover f:X → X with G as its group of deck transformations.
A Trace Formula For Foliated Flows (Working Paper), Jesús A. Álvarez López, Yuri A. Kordyukov, Eric Leichtnam
A Trace Formula For Foliated Flows (Working Paper), Jesús A. Álvarez López, Yuri A. Kordyukov, Eric Leichtnam
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
The talk, based on work in progress, will be about our progress to show a trace formula for foliated flows on foliated spaces, which has been conjectured by V. Guillemin, and later by C. Deninger with more generality. It describes certain Leftchetz distribution of the foliated flow, acting on some version of the leafwise cohomology, in terms of local data at the closed orbits and fixed points.
Which Topological Groups Arise As Automorphism Groups Of Locally Finite Graphs?, Xiao Chang, Paul Gartside
Which Topological Groups Arise As Automorphism Groups Of Locally Finite Graphs?, Xiao Chang, Paul Gartside
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Let Γ be a graph which is countable and locally finite (every vertex has finite degree). Then the automorphism group of Γ, Aut(Γ), with the pointwise topology has a compact, zero dimensional open normal subgroup. We investigate whether the converse holds.
Topologically Homogeneous Continua, Isometrically Homogeneous Continua, And The Pseudo-Arc, Janusz Prajs
Topologically Homogeneous Continua, Isometrically Homogeneous Continua, And The Pseudo-Arc, Janusz Prajs
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
We use accumulated knowledge on topologically homogeneous continua, and, in particular, on the pseudo-arc, to investigate the properties of isometrically homogeneous continua.
Rigidity And Nonrigidity Of Corona Algebras, Paul Mckenney, Alessandro Vignati
Rigidity And Nonrigidity Of Corona Algebras, Paul Mckenney, Alessandro Vignati
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Shelah proved in the 1970s that there is a model of ZFC in which every homeomorphism of the Cech-Stone remainder of the natural numbers is induced by a function on the natural numbers. More recently, Farah proved that in essentially the same model, every automorphism of the Calkin algebra on a separable Hilbert space must be induced by a linear operator on the Hilbert space. I will discuss a common generalization of these rigidity results to a certain class of C*-algebras called corona algebras. No prerequisites in C*-algebra will be assumed.
Balanced And Functionally Balanced P-Groups, Menachem Shlossberg
Balanced And Functionally Balanced P-Groups, Menachem Shlossberg
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
In relation to Itzkowitz's problem, we show that a c-bounded P-group is balanced if and only if it is functionally balanced. We prove that for an arbitrary P-group, being functionally balanced is equivalent to being strongly functionally balanced. A special focus is given to the uniform free topological group defined over a uniform P-space. In particular, we show that this group is (functionally) balanced precisely when its subsets Bn, consisting of words of length at most n, are all (resp., functionally) balanced.
Compactly Supported Homeomorphisms As Long Direct Limits, Rafael Dahmen, Gábor Lukács
Compactly Supported Homeomorphisms As Long Direct Limits, Rafael Dahmen, Gábor Lukács
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Let λ be a limit ordinal and consider a directed system of topological groups (Gα)α < λ with topological embeddings as bonding maps and its directed union G=∪α < λGα. There are two natural topologies on G: one that makes G the direct limit (colimit) in the category of topological spaces and one which makes G the direct limit (colimit) in the category of topological groups.
For λ = ω it is known that these topologies almost never coincide (Yamasaki's Theorem).
In my talk last year, I introduced the Long Direct Limit Conjecture, stating that …

Locally Compact Groups: Traditions And Trends, Karl Heinrich Hofmann, Wolfgang Herfort, Francesco G. Russo
Locally Compact Groups: Traditions And Trends, Karl Heinrich Hofmann, Wolfgang Herfort, Francesco G. Russo
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
For a lecture in the Topology+Algebra and Analysis section, the subject of locally compact groups appears particularly fitting: Historically and currently as well, the structure and representation theory of locally compact groups draws its methods from each of theses three fields of mathematics. Nowadays one might justifiably add combinatorics and number theory as sources. The example of a study of a class of locally compact groups called “near abelian,” undertaken by W. Herfort, K. H. Hofmann, and F. G. Russo, may be used to illustrate the liaison of topological group theory with this different areas of interest. Concepts like the …
Disjoint Infinity Borel Functions, Daniel Hathaway
Disjoint Infinity Borel Functions, Daniel Hathaway
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Consider the statement that every uncountable set of reals can be surjected onto R by a Borel function. This is implied by the statement that every uncountable set of reals has a perfect subset. It is also implied by a new statement D which we will discuss: for each real a there is a Borel function fa : RtoR and for each function g : RtoR there is a countable set G(g) of reals such that the following is true: for each a in R and for each function g : R to R, if fa is disjoint …
Dense Subsets Of Function Spaces With No Non-Trivial Convergent Sequences, Vladimir V. Tkachuk
Dense Subsets Of Function Spaces With No Non-Trivial Convergent Sequences, Vladimir V. Tkachuk
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
We will show that a monolithic compact space X is not scattered if and only if Cp(X) has a dense subset without non-trivial convergent sequences. Besides, for any cardinal κ ≥ c, the space Rκ has a dense subspace without non-trivial convergent sequences. If X is an uncountable σ-compact space of countable weight, then any dense set Y ⊂ Cp(X) has a dense subspace without non-trivial convergent sequences. We also prove that for any countably compact sequential space X, if Cp(X) has a dense k-subspace, then X is scattered.

Compactness Via Adherence Dominators, Bhamini M. P. Nayar, Terrence A. Edwards, James E. Joseph, Myung H. Kwack
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
This talk is based on a joint work by T. A. Edwards, J. E. Joseph, M. H. Kwack and B. M. P. Nayar that apperared in the Journal of Advanced studies in Topology, Vol. 5 (4), 2014), 8 - 15. B
An adherence dominator on a topological space X is a function π from the collection of filterbases on X to the family of closed subsets of X satisfying A(Ω) ⊆ π(Ω) where A(Ω) is the adherence of Ω. The notations π(Ω) and A(Ω) are used for the values of the functions π and A and π(Ω) =⋂_Ω π F= …
Entropy In Topological Groups, Part 2, Dikran Dikranjan
Entropy In Topological Groups, Part 2, Dikran Dikranjan
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
Entropy was introduced first in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, as well as information theory. In the last sixty years entropy made its way also in topology, ergodic theory, as well as other branches of mathematics as algebra, geometry and number theory where dynamical systems appear in one way or another.
Roughly speaking, entropy is a non-negative real number or infinity assigned to a "selfmap" T of a "space" X, where the "space" X can be a topological or uniform space, a measure space, an abstract or topological group (or vector space) or just a set. The "selfmap" T can be, …
On Cardinality Bounds Involving The Weak Lindelöf Degree And H-Closed Spaces, Nathan Carlson, Angelo Bella, Jack Porter
On Cardinality Bounds Involving The Weak Lindelöf Degree And H-Closed Spaces, Nathan Carlson, Angelo Bella, Jack Porter
Summer Conference on Topology and Its Applications
1. Bella and Carlson give several classes of spaces X for which |X| ≤ 2wL(X)χ(X). This includes locally compact spaces and, more recently, extremally disconnected spaces. Three proofs of the former lead to more general results. One such result is that any regular space X with a π-base consisting of elements with compact closure satisfies |X| ≤ 2wL(X)χ(X). It is also shown that if X is locally compact and power homogeneous that |X| ≤ 2wL(X)t(X), an extension of De la Vega's Theorem.
2. Porter and Carlson give a new cardinality bound for any Hausdorff …
Two Dimensional Kinematic Surface In Lorentz-Minkowski 5-Space With Constant Scalar Curvature, E. M. Solouma
Two Dimensional Kinematic Surface In Lorentz-Minkowski 5-Space With Constant Scalar Curvature, E. M. Solouma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we analyzed the problem of investigating locally the scalar curvature of the two dimensional kinematic surfaces foliated by the homothetic motion of an eight curve in Lorentz-Minkowski 5-space Ls. We express the scalar curvature of the corresponding two dimensional kinematic surfaces as the quotient of hyperbolic functions {sinh mv, cosh mv }. From that point, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions that the coefficients of hyperbolic functions vanished identically. Additionally, an example is given to show two dimensional kinematic surfaces with constant scalar curvature.
Student-Created Test Sheets, Samuel Laderach
Student-Created Test Sheets, Samuel Laderach
Honors Projects
Assessment plays a necessary role in the high school mathematics classroom, and testing is a major part of assessment. Students often struggle with mathematics tests and examinations due to math and test anxiety, a lack of student learning, and insufficient and inefficient student preparation. Practice tests, teacher-created review sheets, and student-created test sheets are ways in which teachers can help increase student performance, while ridding these detrimental factors. Student-created test sheets appear to be the most efficient strategy, and this research study examines the effects of their use in a high school mathematics classroom.
Loop Numbers Of Knots And Links, Van Anh Pham
Loop Numbers Of Knots And Links, Van Anh Pham
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis introduces a new quantity called loop number, and shows the conditions in which loop numbers become knot invariants. For a given knot diagram D, one can traverse the knot diagram and count the number of loops created by the traversal. The number of loops recorded depends on the starting point in the diagram D and on the traversal direction. Looking at the minimum or maximum number of loops over all starting points and directions, one can define two positive integers as loop numbers of the diagram D. In this thesis, the conditions under which these loop numbers become …
Conditions For Obtaining Nontrivial Knots From Collections Of Vectors, Joseph Borgatti
Conditions For Obtaining Nontrivial Knots From Collections Of Vectors, Joseph Borgatti
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
We explore under what conditions one can obtain a nontrivial knot, given a collection of n vectors. First, we show how to get a crossing from any 3 vectors equal in magnitude, by arbitrarily picking 2 vectors and identifying the sufficient and necessary criteria for picking a third vector that will guarantee a crossing when the vectors are reordered. We also show that it’s always possible for a set of vectors to be reordered to form the unknot, if they sum to ~0 when added together. Our main results are restricted to sets of n vectors that, when reordered appropriately, …
Pythagorean Approximations For Lego: Merging Educational Robot Construction With Programming And Data Analysis, Ronald I. Greenberg
Pythagorean Approximations For Lego: Merging Educational Robot Construction With Programming And Data Analysis, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Abstract. This paper can be used in two ways. It can provide reference information for incorporating diagonal elements (for bracing or gear meshing) in educational robots built from standard LEGO kits. Alternatively, it can be used as the basis for an assignment for high school or college students to recreate this information; in the process, students will exercise skills in both computer programming and data analysis. Using the paper in the second way can be an excellent integrative experience to add to an existing course; for example, the Exploring Computer Science high school curriculum concludes with the units “Introduction to …
Classification Of Rectifying Space-Like Submanifolds In Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces, Bang Yen Chan, Yun Myung Oh
Classification Of Rectifying Space-Like Submanifolds In Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces, Bang Yen Chan, Yun Myung Oh
Faculty Publications
The notions of rectifying subspaces and of rectifying submanifolds were introduced in [B.-Y. Chen, Int. Electron. J. Geom 9 (2016), no. 2, 1–8]. More precisely, a submanifold in a Euclidean m-space Em is called a rectifying submanifold if its position vector field always lies in its rectifying subspace. Several fundamental properties and classification of rectifying submanifolds in Euclidean space were obtained in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.]. In this present article, we extend the results in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.] to rectifying space- like submanifolds in a pseudo-Euclidean space with arbitrary codimension. In particular, we completely classify all rectifying space-like submanifolds …
Classification Of Book Representations Of K6, Dana Rowland
Classification Of Book Representations Of K6, Dana Rowland
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A book representation of a graph is a particular way of embedding a graph in three dimensional space so that the vertices lie on a circle and the edges are chords on disjoint topological disks. We describe a set of operations on book representations that preserves ambient isotopy, and apply these operations to K6, the complete graph with six vertices. We prove there are exactly 59 distinct book representations for K6, and we identify the number and type of knotted and linked cycles in each representation. We show that book representations of K6 contain between one and seven links, and …
Equivalence Between A Harmonic Form And A Closed Co-Closed Form In Both Lq And Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu
Equivalence Between A Harmonic Form And A Closed Co-Closed Form In Both Lq And Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
For a differential k-form ω on a complete non-compact manifold, we establish an equivalent relation between a harmonic form and a closed co-closed form. We extend this equivalence from ω in L^2 spaces to ω with 2-balanced growth including L^2 spaces and non-L^2 spaces. Especially for a simple differential k-form ¯ω on a complete non-compact manifold, we generalize this equivalence from ¯ω in L^q spaces to ¯ω with 2-balanced growth including L^q spaces and non-L^q spaces for 2 ≤ q < 3. Our research findings recapture the work of Andreotti and Vesentini. Our ideas and calculation methods in this paper could provide a new way of broadening L^q spaces to non-L^q spaces in a variety of energy for differential forms.
Hereditary Properties Of Co-Kähler Manifolds, Giovanni Bazzoni, Gregory Lupton, John F. Oprea
Hereditary Properties Of Co-Kähler Manifolds, Giovanni Bazzoni, Gregory Lupton, John F. Oprea
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We show how certain topological properties of co-Kähler manifolds derive from those of the Kähler manifolds which construct them. We go beyond Betti number results and describe the cohomology algebra structure of co-Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we prove that co-Kähler manifolds satisfy the Toral Rank Conjecture: dim(H∗(M; Q)) ≥2r, for any r-torus Tr which acts almost freely on M.
Discovering Liouville-Type Problems For P-Energy Minimizing Maps In Closed Half-Ellipsoids By Calculus Variation Method, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
The goal of this project is to investigate constant properties (called the Liouville-type Problem) for a p-stable map as a local or global minimum of a p-energy functional where the domain is a Euclidean space and the target space is a closed half-ellipsoid. The First and Second Variation Formulas for a p-energy functional has been applied in the Calculus Variation Method as computation techniques. Stokes’ Theorem, Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality, Hardy-Sobolev type Inequalities, and the Bochner Formula as estimation techniques have been used to estimate the lower bound and the upper bound of the derived p-Harmonic Stability Inequality. One challenging point in …
On The Combinatorics Of Demoulin Transforms And (Discrete) Projective Minimal Surfaces, A Mccarthy, W Schief
On The Combinatorics Of Demoulin Transforms And (Discrete) Projective Minimal Surfaces, A Mccarthy, W Schief
Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
The classical Demoulin transformation is examined in the context of discrete differential geometry. We show that iterative application of the Demoulin transformation to a seed projective minimal surface generates a Z 2 lattice of projective minimal surfaces. Known and novel geometric properties of these Demoulin lattices are discussed and used to motivate the notion of lattice Lie quadrics and associated discrete envelopes and the definition of the class of discrete projective minimal and Q-surfaces (PMQ-surfaces). We demonstrate that the even and odd Demoulin sublattices encode a two-parameter family of pairs of discrete PMQ-surfaces with the property that one discrete PMQ-surface …

Perihelion Precession In The General Theory Of Relativity, Charles G. Torre
Perihelion Precession In The General Theory Of Relativity, Charles G. Torre
Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less
This is a relatively quick and informal sketch of a demonstration that general relativistic corrections to the bound Kepler orbits introduce a perihelion precession. Any decent textbook on the general theory of relativity will derive this result. My analysis aligns with that found in the good old text "Introduction to General Relativity", by Adler, Bazin and Schiffer.
