Mathematics education is a constant topic of conversation in the United States. Many attempts have been made historically to reform teaching methods and improve student results. Particularly, past ideas have emphasized problem-solving to make math feel more applicable and enjoyable. Many have additionally tackled the widespread problem of “math anxiety” by creating lessons that are more discussion-based than drill-based to shift focus from speed and accuracy. In my project, I explored past reform goals and some added goals concerning students' perceptions of mathematics. In this thesis, we introduce the notion of quadratic forms and provide motivation for their study. We begin by discussing Diophantine equations, the field of p-adic numbers, and the Hasse-Minkowski Theorem that allows us to use p-adic analysis determine whether a quadratic form has a rational root. We then discuss search bounds and state Cassels' Theorem for small-height zeros of rational quadratic forms. We end with a proof of Cassels' Theorem and suggestions for further reading.

The Poincare-Miranda Theorem is a topological result about the existence of a zero of a function under particular boundary conditions. In this thesis, we explore proofs of the Poincare-Miranda Theorem that are discrete in nature - that is, they prove a continuous result using an intermediate lemma about discrete objects. We explain a proof by Tkacz and Turzanski that proves the Poincare-Miranda theorem via the Steinhaus Chessboard Theorem, involving colorings of partitions of n-dimensional cubes. Then, we develop a new proof of the Poincare-Miranda Theorem that relies on a polytopal generalization of Sperner's Lemma of Deloera - Peterson - Su. …

In recent decades, education researchers have recognized the need for teachers to have a nuanced content knowledge in addition to pedagogical knowledge, but very little research was conducted into what this knowledge would entail. Beginning in 2008, math education researchers began to develop a theoretical framework for the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching, but their work focused primarily on elementary schools. I will present an analysis of the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching about the regular curves and surfaces, two important concepts in differential geometry which generalize to the advanced notion of a manifold, both in a college classroom and …

On Contemplation In Mathematics, Frank Lucas Wolcott

In a section about research, we make the case that intentional, structured reflection on the mathematical research process, by mathematical researchers themselves, would result in better mathematicians doing better mathematics. As supporting evidence, we describe the Flavors and Seasons project. In a section about teaching, we describe the contemplative education movement and share personal experiences using meditation in the math classroom. We conclude with an explicit proposal for elucidating the experiential context of mathematics, in both research and teaching environments.

We prove that for every closed, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold there exists an alternating group A_n which is not the topological symmetry group of any graph embedded in the manifold. We also show that for every finite group G there is an embedding T of some graph in a hyperbolic rational homology 3-sphere such that the topological symmetry group of T is isomorphic to G.

Raphael's School Of Athens: A Theorem In A Painting?, Robert Haas

Raphael's famous painting The School of Athens includes a geometer, presumably Euclid himself, demonstrating a construction to his fascinated students. But what theorem are they all studying? This article first introduces the painting, and describes Raphael's lifelong friendship with the eminent mathematician Paulus of Middelburg. It then presents several conjectured explanations, notably a theorem about a hexagram (Fichtner), or alternatively that the construction may be architecturally symbolic (Valtieri). The author finally offers his own "null hypothesis": that the scene does not show any actual mathematics, but simply the fascination, excitement, and joy of mathematicians at their work.

In the study of list colorings of graphs, we assume each vertex of a graph has a specified list of colors from which it may be colored. For planar graphs, it is known that there is a coloring for any list assignment where each list contains five colors. If we have some vertices that are precolored, can we extend this to a coloring of the entire graph? We explore distance constraints when we allow the lists to contain an extra color. This activity is an investigation of a special nonregular tetrahedron that can be arranged to fill space without leaving any internal gaps in the same way that certain planar figures tessellate the plane. These tetrahedra can be connected together with hinges to make fun and interesting puzzles. We introduce a generalized cake-cutting problem in which we seek to divide multiple cakes so that two players may get their most-preferred piece selections: a choice of one piece from each cake, allowing for the possibility of linked preferences over the cakes. For two players, we show that disjoint envy-free piece selections may not exist for two cakes cut into two pieces each, and they may not exist for three cakes cut into three pieces each. A Fixed Point Theorem For The Infinite-Dimensional Simplex, Douglas Rizzolo '08, Francis E. Su

We define the infinite-dimensional simplex to be the closure of the convex hull of the standard basis vectors in R, and prove that this space has the fixed point property: any continuous function from the space into itself has a fixed point. Our proof is constructive, in the sense that it can be used to find an approximate fixed point; the proof relies on elementary analysis and Sperner's lemma. The fixed point theorem is shown to imply Schauder's fixed point theorem on infinite-dimensional compact convex subsets of normed spaces.

We present a model of how DNA knots and links are formed as a result of a single recombination event, or multiple rounds of (processive) recombination events, starting with an unknotted, unlinked, or a (2,m)-torus knot or link substrate. Given these substrates, according to our model all DNA products of a single recombination event or processive recombination fall into a single family of knots and links.

The Local Gromov–Witten Invariants Of Configurations Of Rational Curves, Dagan Karp, Chiu-Chu Melissa Liu, Marcos Mariño

We compute the local Gromov–Witten invariants of certain configurations of rational curves in a Calabi–Yau threefold. These configurations are connected subcurves of the “minimal trivalent configuration”, which is a particular tree of ℙ1’s with specified formal neighborhood. We show that these local invariants are equal to certain global or ordinary Gromov–Witten invariants of a blowup of ℙ3 at points, and we compute these ordinary invariants using the geometry of the Cremona transform. We prove that a graph is intrinsically linked in an arbitrary 3–manifold M if and only if it is intrinsically linked in S3. Also, assuming the Poincaré Conjecture, we prove that a graph is intrinsically knotted in M if and only if it is intrinsically knotted in S3.

We present a proof of Ky Fan's combinatorial lemma on labellings of triangulated spheres that differs from earlier proofs in that it is constructive. We slightly generalize the hypotheses of Fan's lemma to allow for triangulations of Sn that contain a flag of hemispheres. As a consequence, we can obtain a constructive proof of Tucker's lemma that holds for a more general class of triangulations than the usual version.

We show that the size of a minimal simplicial cover of a polytope P is a lower bound for the size of a minimal triangulation of P, including ones with extra vertices. We then use this fact to study minimal triangulations of cubes, and we improve lower bounds for covers and triangulations in dimensions 4 through at least 12 (and possibly more dimensions as well). Important ingredients are an analysis of the number of exterior faces that a simplex in the cube can have of a specified dimension and volume, and a characterization of corner simplices in terms of their …

We determine several families of so-called Cayley 4-dimensional manifolds in the real Euclidean 8-space. Such manifolds are of interest because Cayley 4-manifolds are supersymmetric cycles that are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. Moreover, some of the examples of Cayley manifolds discovered in this paper may be modified to construct explicit examples in our current search for new holomorphic invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds and for the further development of mirror symmetry.

We apply the classic results of Harvey and Lawson to find Cayley manifolds which are graphs of functions from the set of quaternions to itself. We …

Consensus-Halving Via Theorems Of Borsuk-Ulam And Tucker, Forrest W. Simmons, Francis E. Su

In this paper we show how theorems of Borsuk-Ulam and Tucker can be used to construct a consensus-halving: a division of an object into two portions so that each of n people believes the portions are equal. Moreover, the division takes at most n cuts, which is best possible. This extends prior work using methods from combinatorial topology to solve fair division problems. Several applications of consensus-halving are discussed.

We show that for every m∈N, there exists an n∈N such that every embedding of the complete graph Kn in R3 contains a link of two components whose linking number is at least m. One way to understand the geometry of the real Grassmann manifold Gk(Rk+n) parameterizing oriented k-dimensional subspaces of Rk+n is to understand the volume-minimizing subvarieties in each homology class. Some of these subvarieties can be determined by using a calibration. In previous work, one of the authors calculated the set of 4-planes calibrated by the first Pontryagin form p1 on Gk(Rk+n) for all k,n ≥4, and identified a family of mutually congruent round 4-spheres which are consequently homologically volume-minimizing. In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.
