Uniform Lipschitz Continuity Of The Isoperimetric Profile Of Compact Surfaces Under Normalized Ricci Flow, Yizhong Zheng
Uniform Lipschitz Continuity Of The Isoperimetric Profile Of Compact Surfaces Under Normalized Ricci Flow, Yizhong Zheng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We show that the isoperimetric profile h_{g(t)}(\xi) of a compact Riemannian manifold (M,g) is jointly continuous when metrics g(t) vary continuously. We also show that, when M is a compact surface and g(t) evolves under normalized Ricci flow, h^2_{g(t)}(\xi) is uniform Lipschitz continuous and hence h_{g(t)}(\xi) is uniform locally Lipschitz continuous.
Convexity And Curvature In Hierarchically Hyperbolic Spaces, Jacob Russell-Madonia
Convexity And Curvature In Hierarchically Hyperbolic Spaces, Jacob Russell-Madonia
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Introduced by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto, hierarchically hyperbolic spaces axiomatized Masur and Minsky's powerful hierarchy machinery for the mapping class groups. The class of hierarchically hyperbolic spaces encompasses a number of important and seemingly distinct examples in geometric group theory including the mapping class group and Teichmueller space of a surface, virtually compact special groups, and the fundamental groups of 3-manifolds without Nil or Sol components. This generalization allows the geometry of all of these important examples to be studied simultaneously as well as providing a bridge for techniques from one area to be applied to another.

While the study of bordered (pseudo-)holomorphic curves with boundary on Lagrangian submanifolds has a long history, a similar problem that involves (special) Lagrangian submanifolds with boundary on complex surfaces appears to be largely overlooked in both physics and math literature. We relate this problem to geometry of coassociative submanifolds in G2 holonomy spaces and to Spin(7) metrics on 8-manifolds with T2 fibrations. As an application to physics, we propose a large class of brane models in type IIA string theory that generalize brane brick models on the one hand and 2d theories T[M4] on …
On The Classification Of Duality Webs For Graded Quivers, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan, Xingyang Yu
On The Classification Of Duality Webs For Graded Quivers, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan, Xingyang Yu
Publications and Research
We study the m-graded quiver theories associated to CY (m+2)-folds and their order (m + 1) dualities. We investigate how monodromies give rise to mutation invariants, which in turn can be formulated as Diophantine equations characterizing the space of dual theories associated to a given geometry. We discuss these ideas in general and illustrate them in the case of orbifold theories. Interestingly, we observe that even in this simple context the corresponding Diophantine equations may admit an infinite number of seeds for m ≥ 2, which translates into an infinite number of disconnected duality webs. Finally, …
Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models And Toric Geometry, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan
Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models And Toric Geometry, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan
Publications and Research
The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY (m+2)-folds is described by m-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence extends to general m the well known connection between CY (m+2)-folds and gauge theories on the world-volume of D(5-2m)-branes for m = 0, ..., 3. We introduce m-dimers, which fully encode the m-graded quivers and their superpotentials, in the case in which the CY (m+2)-folds are toric. Generalizing the well known m = 1,2 cases, m-dimers significantly simplify the connection between geometry and m-graded quivers. A key …
Studying The Space Of Almost Complex Structures On A Manifold Using De Rham Homotopy Theory, Bora Ferlengez
Studying The Space Of Almost Complex Structures On A Manifold Using De Rham Homotopy Theory, Bora Ferlengez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In his seminal paper Infinitesimal Computations in Topology, Sullivan constructs algebraic models for spaces and then computes various invariants using them. In this thesis, we use those ideas to obtain a finiteness result for such an invariant (the de Rham homotopy type) for each connected component of the space of cross-sections of certain fibrations. We then apply this result to differential geometry and prove a finiteness theorem of the de Rham homotopy type for each connected component of the space of almost complex structures on a manifold. As a special case, we discuss the space of almost complex structures …
Linear Progress With Exponential Decay In Weakly Hyperbolic Groups, Matthew H. Sunderland
Linear Progress With Exponential Decay In Weakly Hyperbolic Groups, Matthew H. Sunderland
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A random walk wn on a separable, geodesic hyperbolic metric space X converges to the boundary ∂X with probability one when the step distribution supports two independent loxodromics. In particular, the random walk makes positive linear progress. Progress is known to be linear with exponential decay when (1) the step distribution has exponential tail and (2) the action on X is acylindrical. We extend exponential decay to the nonacylindrical case. We give an application to random Heegaard splittings.
Applying P-Balanced Energy Technique To Solve Liouville-Type Problems In Calculus, Lina Wu
Applying P-Balanced Energy Technique To Solve Liouville-Type Problems In Calculus, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
We are interested in solving Liouville-type problems to explore constancy properties for maps or differential forms on Riemannian manifolds. Geometric structures on manifolds, the existence of constancy properties for maps or differential forms, and energy growth for maps or differential forms are intertwined. In this article, we concentrate on discovery of solutions to Liouville-type problems where manifolds are Euclidean spaces (i.e. flat Riemannian manifolds) and maps become real-valued functions. Liouville-type results of vanishing properties for functions are obtained. The original work in our research findings is to extend the q-energy for a function from finite in L^q space to infinite …
Divergence Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes And Coxeter Groups, Ivan Levcovitz
Divergence Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes And Coxeter Groups, Ivan Levcovitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We provide geometric conditions on a pair of hyperplanes of a CAT(0) cube complex that imply divergence bounds for the cube complex. As an application, we characterize right-angled Coxeter groups with quadratic divergence and show right-angled Coxeter groups cannot exhibit a divergence function between quadratic and cubic. This generalizes a theorem of Dani-Thomas that addressed the class of 2-dimensional right-angled Coxeter groups. This characterization also has a direct application to the theory of random right-angled Coxeter groups. As another application of the divergence bounds obtained for cube complexes, we provide an inductive graph theoretic criterion on a right-angled Coxeter group's …
On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk
On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis we study the intrinsic geometry of graphs via the constants that appear in discretized partial differential equations associated to those graphs. By studying the behavior of a discretized version of Bochner's inequality for smooth manifolds at the cone point for a cone over the set of vertices of a graph, a lower bound for the internal energy of the underlying graph is obtained. This gives a new lower bound for the size of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian in terms of the curvature constant that appears at the cone point and the size of …
Geometry And Analysis Of Some Euler-Arnold Equations, Jae Min Lee
Geometry And Analysis Of Some Euler-Arnold Equations, Jae Min Lee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1966, Arnold showed that the Euler equation for an ideal fluid can arise as the geodesic flow on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms with respect to the right invariant kinetic energy metric. This geometric interpretation was rigorously established by Ebin and Marsden in 1970 using infinite dimensional Riemannian geometry and Sobolev space techniques. Many other nonlinear evolution PDEs in mathematical physics turned out to fit in this universal approach, and this opened a vast research on the geometry and analysis of the Euler-Arnold equations, i.e., geodesic equations on a Lie group endowed with one-sided invariant metrics. In this …
Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker
Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker
Publications and Research
We introduce a unified mathematical framework that elegantly describes minimally supersymmetry gauge theories in even dimensions, ranging from six dimensions to zero dimensions, and their dualities. This approach combines and extends recent developments on graded quivers with potentials, higher Ginzburg algebras, and higher cluster categories (also known as m-cluster categories). Quiver mutations studied in the context of mathematics precisely correspond to the order-(m + 1) dualities of the gauge theories. Our work indicates that these equivalences of quiver gauge theories sit inside an infinite family of such generalized dualities.
Bipartite Field Theories And D-Brane Instantons, Sebastían Franco, Eduardo García-Valdecasas, Angel M. Uranga
Bipartite Field Theories And D-Brane Instantons, Sebastían Franco, Eduardo García-Valdecasas, Angel M. Uranga
Publications and Research
We study D-brane instantons in systems of D3-branes at toric CY 3-fold singularities. The instanton effect can be described as a backreaction modifying the geometry of the mirror configuration, in which the breaking of U(1) symmetries by the instanton translates into the recombination of gauge D-branes, which also directly generates the instanton-induced charged field theory operator. In this paper we describe the D-brane instanton backreaction in terms of a combinatorial operation in the bipartite dimer diagram of the original theory. Interestingly, the resulting theory is a general Bipartite Field Theory (BFT), defined by a bipartite graph tiling a general (possibly …
3d Printing Of 2d N = (0, 2) Gauge Theories, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan
3d Printing Of 2d N = (0, 2) Gauge Theories, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan
Publications and Research
We introduce 3d printing, a new algorithm for generating 2d N = (0, 2) gauge theories on D1-branes probing singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds using 4d N = 1 gauge theories on D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds as starting points. Equivalently, this method produces brane brick models starting from brane tilings. 3d printing represents a significant improvement with respect to previously available tools, allowing a straightforward determination of gauge theories for geometries that until now could only be tackled using partial resolution. We investigate the interplay between triality, an IR equivalence between different 2d N = …
Solving Liouville-Type Problems On Manifolds With Poincar´E-Sobolev Inequality By Broadening Q-Energy From Finite To Infinite, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
The aim of this article is to investigate Liouville-type problems on complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds with Poincar´e-Sobolev Inequality. Two significant technical breakthroughs are demonstrated in research findings. The first breakthrough is an extension from non-flat manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvatures to curved manifolds with Ricci curvatures varying among negative values, zero, and positive values. Poincar´e-Sobolev Inequality has been applied to overcome difficulties of an extension on manifolds. Poincar´e-Sobolev Inequality has offered a special structure on curved manifolds with a mix of Ricci curvature signs. The second breakthrough is a generalization of q-energy from finite to infinite. At this point, a …
Turaev Surfaces And Toroidally Alternating Knots, Seungwon Kim
Turaev Surfaces And Toroidally Alternating Knots, Seungwon Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis, we study knots and links via their alternating diagrams on closed orientable surfaces. Every knot or link has such a diagram by a construction of Turaev, which is called the Turaev surface of the link. Links that have an alternating diagram on a torus were defined by Adams as toroidally alternating. For a toroidally alternating link, the minimal genus of its Turaev surface may be greater than one. Hence, these surfaces provide different topological measures of how far a link is from being alternating.
First, we classify link diagrams with Turaev genus one and two in terms …
Manifold Convergence: Sewing Sequences Of Riemannian Manifolds With Positive Or Nonnegative Scalar Curvature, Jorge E. Basilio
Manifold Convergence: Sewing Sequences Of Riemannian Manifolds With Positive Or Nonnegative Scalar Curvature, Jorge E. Basilio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis, we develop a new method of performing surgery on 3-dimensional manifolds called "sewing" and use this technique to construct sequences of Riemannian manifolds with positive or nonnegative scalar curvature. The foundation of our method is a strengthening of the Gromov-Lawson tunnel construction which guarantees the existence of “tiny” and arbitrarily “short” tunnels. We study the limits of sequences of sewn spaces under the Gromov-Hausdorff (GH) and Sormani-Wenger Instrinsic-Flat (SWIF) distances and discuss to what extent the notion of scalar curvature extends to these spaces. We give three applications of the sewing technique to demonstrate that stability theorems …
Intercusp Geodesics And Cusp Shapes Of Fully Augmented Links, Rochy Flint
Intercusp Geodesics And Cusp Shapes Of Fully Augmented Links, Rochy Flint
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We study the geometry of fully augmented link complements in the 3-sphere by looking at their link diagrams. We extend the method introduced by Thistlethwaite and Tsvietkova to fully augmented links and define a system of algebraic equations in terms of parameters coming from edges and crossings of the link diagrams. Combining it with the work of Purcell, we show that the solutions to these algebraic equations are related to the cusp shapes of fully augmented link complements. As an application we use the cusp shapes to study the commensurability classes of fully augmented links.
Equivalence Between A Harmonic Form And A Closed Co-Closed Form In Both Lq And Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu
Equivalence Between A Harmonic Form And A Closed Co-Closed Form In Both Lq And Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
For a differential k-form ω on a complete non-compact manifold, we establish an equivalent relation between a harmonic form and a closed co-closed form. We extend this equivalence from ω in L^2 spaces to ω with 2-balanced growth including L^2 spaces and non-L^2 spaces. Especially for a simple differential k-form ¯ω on a complete non-compact manifold, we generalize this equivalence from ¯ω in L^q spaces to ¯ω with 2-balanced growth including L^q spaces and non-L^q spaces for 2 ≤ q < 3. Our research findings recapture the work of Andreotti and Vesentini. Our ideas and calculation methods in this paper could provide a new way of broadening L^q spaces to non-L^q spaces in a variety of energy for differential forms.
Discovering Liouville-Type Problems For P-Energy Minimizing Maps In Closed Half-Ellipsoids By Calculus Variation Method, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
The goal of this project is to investigate constant properties (called the Liouville-type Problem) for a p-stable map as a local or global minimum of a p-energy functional where the domain is a Euclidean space and the target space is a closed half-ellipsoid. The First and Second Variation Formulas for a p-energy functional has been applied in the Calculus Variation Method as computation techniques. Stokes’ Theorem, Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality, Hardy-Sobolev type Inequalities, and the Bochner Formula as estimation techniques have been used to estimate the lower bound and the upper bound of the derived p-Harmonic Stability Inequality. One challenging point in …
A Geometric Model Of Twisted Differential K-Theory, Byung Do Park
A Geometric Model Of Twisted Differential K-Theory, Byung Do Park
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We construct a model of even twisted differential K-theory when the underlying topological twist represents a torsion class. We use smooth U(1)-gerbes with connection as differential twists and twisted vector bundles with connection as cycles. The model we construct satisfies the axioms of Kahle and Valentino, including functoriality, naturality of twists, and the hexagon diagram. We also construct an odd twisted Chern character of a twisted vector bundle with an automorphism. In addition to our geometric model of twisted differential K-theory, we introduce a smooth variant of the Hopkins-Singer model of differential K-theory. We prove that our model is naturally …
On The Derivative Of 2-Holonomy For A Non-Abelian Gerbe, Cheyne J. Miller
On The Derivative Of 2-Holonomy For A Non-Abelian Gerbe, Cheyne J. Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The local 2-holonomy for a non abelian gerbe with connection is first studied via a local zig-zag Hochschild complex. Next, by locally integrating the cocycle data for our gerbe with connection, and then glueing this data together, an explicit definition is offered for a global version of 2-holonomy. After showing this definition satisfies the desired properties for 2-holonomy, its derivative is calculated whereby the only interior information added is the integration of the 3-curvature. Finally, for the case when the surface being mapped into the manifold is a sphere, the derivative of 2-holonomy is extended to an equivariant closed form …
Some 2-Categorical Aspects In Physics, Arthur Parzygnat
Some 2-Categorical Aspects In Physics, Arthur Parzygnat
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
2-categories provide a useful transition point between ordinary category theory and infinity-category theory where one can perform concrete computations for applications in physics and at the same time provide rigorous formalism for mathematical structures appearing in physics. We survey three such broad instances. First, we describe two-dimensional algebra as a means of constructing non-abelian parallel transport along surfaces which can be used to describe strings charged under non-abelian gauge groups in string theory. Second, we formalize the notion of convex and cone categories, provide a preliminary categorical definition of entropy, and exhibit several examples. Thirdly, we provide a universal description …

Suppose is a cone contained in real vector space . When does contain a hyperplane that intersects each of the 0-rays in \{0} exactly once? The Fourth Movement Of György Ligeti's Piano Concerto: Investigating The Musical-Mathematical Connection, Cynthia L. Wong
The Fourth Movement Of György Ligeti's Piano Concerto: Investigating The Musical-Mathematical Connection, Cynthia L. Wong
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This interdisciplinary study explores musical-mathematical analogies in the fourth movement of Ligeti’s Piano Concerto. Its aim is to connect musical analysis with the piece’s mathematical inspiration. For this purpose, the dissertation is divided into two sections. Part I (Chapters 1-2) provides musical and mathematical context, including an explanation of ideas related to Ligeti’s mathematical inspiration. Part II (Chapters 3-5) delves into an analysis of the rhythm, form, melody / motive, and harmony. Appendix A is a reduced score of the entire movement, labeled according to my analysis.
Cohomology Of Certain Polyhedral Product Spaces, Elizabeth A. Vidaurre
Cohomology Of Certain Polyhedral Product Spaces, Elizabeth A. Vidaurre
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The study of torus actions led to the discovery of moment-angle complexes and their generalization, polyhedral product spaces. Polyhedral products are constructed from a simplicial complex. This thesis focuses on computing the cohomology of polyhedral products given by two different classes of simplicial complexes: polyhedral joins (composed simplicial complexes) and $n$-gons. A homological decomposition of a polyhedral product developed by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler is used to derive a formula for the case of polyhedral joins. Moreover, methods from and results by Cai will be used to give a full description of the non-trivial cup products in a real …
Quaternion Algebras And Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Joseph Quinn
Quaternion Algebras And Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Joseph Quinn
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I use a classical idea of Macfarlane to obtain a complex quaternion model for hyperbolic 3-space and its group of orientation-preserving isometries, analogous to Hamilton’s famous result on Euclidean rotations. I generalize this to quaternion models over number fields for the action of Kleinian groups on hyperbolic 3-space, using arithmetic invariants of the corresponding hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The class of manifolds to which this technique applies includes all cusped arithmetic manifolds and infinitely many commensurability classes of cusped non-arithmetic, compact arithmetic, and compact non-arithmetic manifolds. I obtain analogous results for actions of Fuchsian groups on the hyperbolic plane. I develop new …

Existence of robust edge states at interfaces of topologically dissimilar systems is one of the most fascinating manifestations of a novel nontrivial state of matter, a topological insulator. Such nontrivial states were originally predicted and discovered in condensed matter physics, but they find their counterparts in other fields of physics, including the physics of classical waves and electromagnetism. Here, we present the first experimental realization of a topological insulator for electromagnetic waves based on engineered bianisotropic metamaterials. By employing the near-field scanning technique, we demonstrate experimentally the topologically robust propagation of electromagnetic waves around sharp corners without backscattering effects.

Locally Anisotropic Toposes, Jonathon Funk, Pieter Hofstra
Publications and Research
This paper continues the investigation of isotropy theory for toposes. We develop the theory of isotropy quotients of toposes, culminating in a structure theorem for a class of toposes we call locally anisotropic. The theory has a natural interpretation for inverse semigroups, which clarifies some aspects of how inverse semigroups and toposes are related.
