Graph-Theoretic Simplicial Complexes, Hajos-Type Constructions, And K-Matchings, Julianne Vega Jan 2020

Graph-Theoretic Simplicial Complexes, Hajos-Type Constructions, And K-Matchings, Julianne Vega

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

A graph property is monotone if it is closed under the removal of edges and vertices. Given a graph G and a monotone graph property P, one can associate to the pair (G,P) a simplicial complex, which serves as a way to encode graph properties within faces of a topological space. We study these graph-theoretic simplicial complexes using combinatorial and topological approaches as a way to inform our understanding of the graphs and their properties.

In this dissertation, we study two families of simplicial complexes: (1) neighborhood complexes and (2) k-matching complexes. A neighborhood complex is a simplicial …

Merge Trees In Discrete Morse Theory, Benjamin Johnson Jul 2019

Merge Trees In Discrete Morse Theory, Benjamin Johnson

Mathematics Summer Fellows

The field of topological data analysis seeks to use techniques in topology to study large data sets. The hope is that rather than single quantities that summarize the data, such as mean or standard deviation, information about the data can be learned by studying the overall ``shape” of the data. One way to summarize this data is through a merge tree. Merge trees can be thought of as keeping track of certain clusters of data and determining when they merge together. In this paper, we will study merge trees induced by a discrete Morse function on a tree. Under a …

Properties Of Functionally Alexandroff Topologies And Their Lattice, Jacob Scott Menix Jul 2019

Properties Of Functionally Alexandroff Topologies And Their Lattice, Jacob Scott Menix

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis explores functionally Alexandroff topologies and the order theory asso- ciated when considering the collection of such topologies on some set X. We present several theorems about the properties of these topologies as well as their partially ordered set.

The first chapter introduces functionally Alexandroff topologies and motivates why this work is of interest to topologists. This chapter explains the historical context of this relatively new type of topology and how this work relates to previous work in topology. Chapter 2 presents several theorems describing properties of functionally Alexandroff topologies ad presents a characterization for the functionally Alexandroff topologies …

Computing Homology Of Hypergraphs, Jackson Earl Jan 2019

Computing Homology Of Hypergraphs, Jackson Earl

STAR Program Research Presentations

In the modern age of data science, the necessity for efficient and insightful analytical tools that enable us to interpret large data structures inherently presents itself. With the increasing utility of metrics offered by the mathematics of hypergraph theory and algebraic topology, we are able to explore multi-way relational datasets and actively develop such tools. Throughout this research endeavor, one of the primary goals has been to contribute to the development of computational algorithms pertaining to the homology of hypergraphs. More specifically, coding in python to compute the homology groups of a given hypergraph, as well as their Betti numbers …

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K Jan 2019

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors study special type of subset vertex multi subgraphs; these multi subgraphs can be directed or otherwise. Another special feature of these subset vertex multigraphs is that we are aware of the elements in each vertex set and how it affects the structure of both subset vertex multisubgraphs and edge multisubgraphs. It is pertinent to record at this juncture that certain ego centric directed multistar graphs become empty on the removal of one edge, there by theorising the importance, and giving certain postulates how to safely form ego centric multi networks. Given any subset vertex multigraph we …

Finite Simple Graphs And Their Associated Graph Lattices, James B. Hart, Brian Frazier Nov 2018

Finite Simple Graphs And Their Associated Graph Lattices, James B. Hart, Brian Frazier

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In his 2005 dissertation, Antoine Vella explored combinatorical aspects of finite graphs utilizing a topological space whose open sets are intimately tied to the structure of the graph. In this paper, we go a step further and examine some aspects of the open set lattices induced by these topological spaces. In particular, we will characterize all lattices that constitute the opens for finite simple graphs endowed with this topology, explore the structure of these lattices, and show that these lattices contain information necessary to reconstruct the graph and its complement in several ways.

The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter May 2018

The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Within an n-dimensional unit cube, a number of k-dimensional simplices can be formed whose vertices are the vertices of the n-cube. In this thesis, we analyze the average measure of a k-simplex in the n-cube. We develop exact equations for the average measure when k = 1, 2, and 3. Then we generate data for these cases and conjecture that their averages appear to approach nk/2 times some constant. Using the convergence of Bernstein polynomials and a k-simplex Bernstein generalization, we prove the conjecture is true for the 1-simplex and 2-simplex cases. We then develop a generalized formula for …

On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk May 2018

On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis we study the intrinsic geometry of graphs via the constants that appear in discretized partial differential equations associated to those graphs. By studying the behavior of a discretized version of Bochner's inequality for smooth manifolds at the cone point for a cone over the set of vertices of a graph, a lower bound for the internal energy of the underlying graph is obtained. This gives a new lower bound for the size of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian in terms of the curvature constant that appears at the cone point and the size of …

Theses and Dissertations

A 3-map is a 3-region colorable map. They have been studied by Craft and White in their paper 3-maps. This thesis introduces topological graph theory and then investigates 3-maps in detail, including examples, special types of 3-maps, the use of 3-maps to find the genus of special graphs, and a generalization known as n-maps.

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell Jan 2018

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell

Honors Theses

Bi-infinite words are sequences of characters that are infinite forwards and backwards; for example "...ababababab...". The Morse-Hedlund theorem says that a bi-infinite word f repeats itself, in at most n letters, if and only if the number of distinct subwords of length n is at most n. Using the example, "...ababababab...", there are 2 subwords of length 3, namely "aba" and "bab". Since 2 is less than 3, we must have that "...ababababab..." repeats itself after at most 3 letters. In fact it does repeat itself every two letters. …

Spanning Tree Problem With Neutrosophic Edge Weights, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Assia Bakali, Mohamed Talea, Arindam Dey, Le Hoang Son

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set and neutrosophic logic theory are renowned theories to deal with complex, not clearly explained and uncertain real life problems, in which classical fuzzy sets/models may fail to model properly. This paper introduces an algorithm for finding minimum spanning tree (MST) of an undirected neutrosophic weighted connected graph (abbr. UNWCG) where the arc/edge lengths are represented by a single valued neutrosophic numbers. To build the MST of UNWCG, a new algorithm based on matrix approach has been introduced. The proposed algorithm is compared to other existing methods and finally a numerical example is provided.

Self-Assembly Of Dna Graphs And Postman Tours, Katie Bakewell Jan 2018

Self-Assembly Of Dna Graphs And Postman Tours, Katie Bakewell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

DNA graph structures can self-assemble from branched junction molecules to yield solutions to computational problems. Self-assembly of graphs have previously been shown to give polynomial time solutions to hard computational problems such as 3-SAT and k-colorability problems. Jonoska et al. have proposed studying self-assembly of graphs topologically, considering the boundary components of their thickened graphs, which allows for reading the solutions to computational problems through reporter strands. We discuss weighting algorithms and consider applications of self-assembly of graphs and the boundary components of their thickened graphs to problems involving minimal weight Eulerian walks such as the Chinese Postman Problem and …

Consider a surface S and let MS. If S \ M is not connected, then we say M separates S, and we refer to M as a separating set of S. If M separates S, and no proper subset of M separates S, then we say M is a minimal separating set of S. In this paper we use computational methods of combinatorial topology to classify the minimal separating sets of the orientable surfaces of genus g = 2 and g = 3. The classification for genus 0 and 1 was done …

Classification Of Book Representations Of K6, Dana Rowland Mar 2017

Classification Of Book Representations Of K6, Dana Rowland

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A book representation of a graph is a particular way of embedding a graph in three dimensional space so that the vertices lie on a circle and the edges are chords on disjoint topological disks. We describe a set of operations on book representations that preserves ambient isotopy, and apply these operations to K6, the complete graph with six vertices. We prove there are exactly 59 distinct book representations for K6, and we identify the number and type of knotted and linked cycles in each representation. We show that book representations of K6 contain between one and seven links, and …

Sudoku Variants On The Torus, Kira A. Wyld

HMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the mathematical properties of Sudoku puzzles defined on a Torus. We seek to answer the questions for these variants that have been explored for the traditional Sudoku. We do this process with two such embeddings. The end result of this paper is a deeper mathematical understanding of logic puzzles of this type, as well as a fun new puzzle which could be played.

On Independence, Matching, And Homomorphism Complexes, Wesley K. Hough Jan 2017

On Independence, Matching, And Homomorphism Complexes, Wesley K. Hough

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

First introduced by Forman in 1998, discrete Morse theory has become a standard tool in topological combinatorics. The main idea of discrete Morse theory is to pair cells in a cellular complex in a manner that permits cancellation via elementary collapses, reducing the complex under consideration to a homotopy equivalent complex with fewer cells. In chapter 1, we introduce the relevant background for discrete Morse theory.

In chapter 2, we define a discrete Morse matching for a family of independence complexes that generalize the matching complexes of suitable "small" grid graphs. Using this matching, we determine the dimensions of the …

The Partition Lattice In Many Guises, Dustin G. Hedmark Jan 2017

The Partition Lattice In Many Guises, Dustin G. Hedmark

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation is divided into four chapters. In Chapter 2 the equivariant homology groups of upper order ideals in the partition lattice are computed. The homology groups of these filters are written in terms of border strip Specht modules as well as in terms of links in an associated complex in the lattice of compositions. The classification is used to reproduce topological calculations of many well-studied subcomplexes of the partition lattice, including the d-divisible partition lattice and the Frobenius complex. In Chapter 3 the box polynomial B_{m,n}(x) is defined in terms of all integer partitions that fit in an m …

Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Assia Bakali, Mohamed Talea

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The notion of single valued neutrosophic sets is a generalization of fuzzy sets, intuitionistic fuzzy sets. We apply the concept of single valued neutrosophic sets, an instance of neutrosophic sets, to graphs. We introduce certain types of single valued neutrosophic graphs (SVNG) and investigate some of their properties with proofs and examples.

Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs: Degree, Order And Size, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Mohamed Talea, Assia Bakali

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The single valued neutrosophic graph is a new version of graph theory presented recently as a generalization of fuzzy graph and intuitionistic fuzzy graph. The single valued neutrosophic graph (SVN-graph) is used when the relation between nodes (or vertices) in problems are indeterminate. In this paper, we examine the properties of various types of degrees, order and size of single valued neutrosophic graphs and a new definition for regular single valued neutrosophic graph is given.

New Facets Of The Balanced Minimal Evolution Polytope, Logan Keefe Jan 2016

New Facets Of The Balanced Minimal Evolution Polytope, Logan Keefe

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The balanced minimal evolution (BME) polytope arises from the study of phylogenetic trees in biology. It is a geometric structure which has a variant for each natural number n. The main application of this polytope is that we can use linear programming with it in order to determine the most likely phylogenetic tree for a given genetic data set. In this paper, we explore the geometric and combinatorial structure of the BME polytope. Background information will be covered, highlighting some points from previous research, and a new result on the structure of the BME polytope will be given.

Clifford Algebra Decompositions Of Conformal Orthogonal Group Elements, G. Stacey Staples, David Wylie Jan 2015

Clifford Algebra Decompositions Of Conformal Orthogonal Group Elements, G. Stacey Staples, David Wylie

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Beginning with a finite-dimensional vector space V equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form Q, we consider the decompositions of elements of the conformal orthogonal group COQ(V), defined as the direct product of the orthogonal group OQ(V) with dilations. Utilizing the correspondence between conformal orthogonal group elements and ``decomposable'' elements of the associated Clifford algebra, ClQ(V), a decomposition algorithm is developed. Preliminary results on complexity reductions that can be realized passing from additive to multiplicative representations of invertible elements are also presented with examples. The approach here is …

Study of algebraic structures built using [0, n) happens to be one of an interesting and innovative research. Here in this book authors define non associative algebraic structures using the interval [0, n). Here we define two types of groupoids using [0, n) both of them are of infinite order. It is an open conjecture to find whether these new class of groupoids satisfy any of the special identities like Moufang identity or Bol identity or Bruck identity or so on. We know on [0, n) we cannot build rings only pseudo rings, however in this book we use these …

A Discrete Approach To The Poincare-Miranda Theorem, Connor Thomas Ahlbach May 2013

A Discrete Approach To The Poincare-Miranda Theorem, Connor Thomas Ahlbach

HMC Senior Theses

The Poincare-Miranda Theorem is a topological result about the existence of a zero of a function under particular boundary conditions. In this thesis, we explore proofs of the Poincare-Miranda Theorem that are discrete in nature - that is, they prove a continuous result using an intermediate lemma about discrete objects. We explain a proof by Tkacz and Turzanski that proves the Poincare-Miranda theorem via the Steinhaus Chessboard Theorem, involving colorings of partitions of n-dimensional cubes. Then, we develop a new proof of the Poincare-Miranda Theorem that relies on a polytopal generalization of Sperner's Lemma of Deloera - Peterson - Su. …
