Counting Hamiltonian Cycles In Quartic Circulant Graphs, Allison Hilliard Apr 2026

Counting Hamiltonian Cycles In Quartic Circulant Graphs, Allison Hilliard

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

We consider the problem of counting Hamiltonian cycles in circulant graphs $C^K_n$ where $n$ is the number of vertices and $K$ is a set containing elements that correspond to the allowed edges in the circulant graphs. After sorting the cycles by a topological invariant called the winding number, we use a modified transfer matrix method to convert local data into global structures. The result is a generating function that counts the number of Hamiltonian cycles in a circulant graph with $n$ vertices. The results for $K=\{1,2\}$ and $K=\{1,3\}$ have been found by previous authors. We focus on the case where …

Counting Hamiltonian Cycles In Quartic Circulant Graphs, Allison Hilliard

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

We consider the problem of counting Hamiltonian cycles in circulant graphs $C_n^{1,k}$. Our method is to partition the set of Hamiltonian cycles according to their winding numbers. Then, we construct a weighted digraph that allows us to produce a generating function that counts the number of Hamiltonian cycles for each winding number. Summing these generating functions derives a formula for the total number of Hamiltonian cycles in a circulant graph with $n$ vertices.

The Dual Boundary Complex Of The Moduli Space Of Cyclic Compactifications, Toby Anderson Jan 2024

The Dual Boundary Complex Of The Moduli Space Of Cyclic Compactifications, Toby Anderson

HMC Senior Theses

Moduli spaces provide a useful method for studying families of mathematical objects. We study certain moduli spaces of algebraic curves, which are generalizations of familiar lines and conics. This thesis focuses on, Δ(r,n), the dual boundary complex of the moduli space of genus-zero cyclic curves. This complex is itself a moduli space of graphs and can be investigated with combinatorial methods. Remarkably, the combinatorics of this complex provides insight into the geometry and topology of the original moduli space. In this thesis, we investigate two topologically invariant properties of Δ(r,n). We compute its Euler characteristic and …

A New Method To Compute The Hadamard Product Of Two Rational Functions, Ishan Kar Apr 2022

A New Method To Compute The Hadamard Product Of Two Rational Functions, Ishan Kar

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The Hadamard product (denoted by∗) of two power series A(x) =a0+a1x+a2x2+···and B(x) =b0+b1x+b2x2+··· is the power series A(x)∗B(x) =a0b0+a1b1x+a2b2x2+···. Although it is well known that the Hadamard product of two rational functions is also rational, a closed form expression of the Hadamard product of rational functions has not been found. Since any rational power series can be expanded by partial fractions as a polynomial plus a sum of power series …

Integer Partitions Under Certain Finiteness Conditions, Tim Wagner Jan 2021

Integer Partitions Under Certain Finiteness Conditions, Tim Wagner

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation focuses on problems related to integer partitions under various finiteness restrictions. Much of our work involves the collection of partitions fitting inside a fixed partition $\lambda$, and the associated generating function $G_{\lambda}$.

In Chapter 2, we discuss the flawlessness of such generating functions, as proved by Pouzet using the Multicolor Theorem. We give novel applications of the Multicolor Theorem to re-prove flawlessness of pure $O$-sequences, and show original flawlessness results for other combinatorial sequences. We also present a linear-algebraic generalization of the Multicolor Theorem that may have far-reaching applications.

In Chapter 3, we extend a technique due to …

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich Jan 2019

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich

Honors Theses

We find necessary and separate sufficient conditions for the difference between two labeled partially ordered set's (poset) partition generating functions to be positive in the fundamental basis. We define the notion of a jump sequence for a poset and show how different conditions on the jump sequences of two posets are necessary for those posets to have an order relation in the fundamental basis. Our sufficient conditions are of two types. First, we show how manipulating a poset's Hasse diagram produces a poset that is greater according to the fundamental basis. Secondly, we also provide tools to explain posets that …

Simplifying Coefficients In A Family Of Ordinary Differential Equations Related To The Generating Function Of The Laguerre Polynomials, Feng Qi Dec 2018

Simplifying Coefficients In A Family Of Ordinary Differential Equations Related To The Generating Function Of The Laguerre Polynomials, Feng Qi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the paper, by virtue of the Faà di Bruno formula, properties of the Bell polynomials of the second kind, and the Lah inversion formula, the author simplifies coefficients in a family of ordinary differential equations related to the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials.

Incomplete Generalized (P; Q; R)-Tribonacci Polynomials, Mark Shattuck, Elif Tan Jun 2018

Incomplete Generalized (P; Q; R)-Tribonacci Polynomials, Mark Shattuck, Elif Tan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider an extension of the tribonacci polynomial, which we will refer to as the generalized (p; q; r)-tribonacci polynomial, denoted by Tn;m(x).We find an explicit formula for Tn;m(x)which we use to introduce the incomplete generalized (p; q; r)-tribonacci polynomials and derive several properties. An explicit formula for the generating function of the incomplete generalized polynomials is determined and a combinatorial interpretation is provided yielding further identities.

Polynomials Occuring In Generating Function Identities For B-Ary Partitions, David Dakota Blair Jan 2015

Polynomials Occuring In Generating Function Identities For B-Ary Partitions, David Dakota Blair

Graduate Student Publications and Research

Let p_b(n) be the number of integer partitions of n whose parts are powers of b. For each m there is a generating function identity:

f_m(b,q)\sum_{n} p_b(n) q^n = (1-q)^m \sum_{n} p_b(b^m n q)q^n

where n ranges over all integer values. The proof of this identity appears in the doctoral thesis of the author. For more information see http://dakota.tensen.net/2015/rp/.

This dataset is a JSON object with keys m from 1 to 23 whose values are f_m(b,q).

Fix nonnegative integers n1 , . . ., nd, and let L denote the lattice of points (a1 , . . ., ad) ∈ ℤd that satisfy 0 ≤ ai ≤ ni for 1 ≤ i ≤ d. Let L be partially ordered by the usual dominance ordering. In this paper we use elementary combinatorial arguments to derive new expressions for the number of chains and the number of Delannoy paths in L. Setting ni = n (for all i) in these expressions yields a new …
