Onsager Reciprocal Relations: Microscopic (Onsager) Or Macroscopic (Sliepcevich), R. E. "Buddy" Babcock
Onsager Reciprocal Relations: Microscopic (Onsager) Or Macroscopic (Sliepcevich), R. E. "Buddy" Babcock
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper is a combination of the discussion of two nineteenth century theoretical giants Lars Onsager and C. M. Sliepcevich, their works in general, and specifically the famous reciprocal relations of Onsager with respect to irreversible thermodynamics. Emphasis is placed on their penetrating depth and breadth of analysis so inherently necessary in their problem-solving endeavors. The landscape of their work will be laid out for the reader by a comparison of Onsager’s microscopic statistical mechanics derivation of the famous reciprocal relationships and a macroscopic thermodynamic derivation published by C. M. Sliepsevich that led to considerable discussion in the literature in …

Improving The Accuracy For The Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-Thia) Model, Anqi Zhang, Lawrence Theller, Bernard A. Engel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Urbanization increases runoff by changing land use types from less impervious to impervious covers. Improving the accuracy of a runoff assessment model, the Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) Model, can help us to better evaluate the potential uses of Low Impact Development (LID) practices aimed at reducing runoff, as well as to identify appropriate runoff and water quality mitigation methods. Several versions of the model have been built over time, and inconsistencies have been introduced between the models. To improve the accuracy and consistency of the model, the equations and parameters (primarily curve numbers in the case of this model) …
A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz
A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
At heart every trader loves volatility; this is where return on investment comes from, this is what drives the proverbial “positive alpha.” As a trader, understanding the probabilities related to the volatility of prices is key, however if you could also predict future prices with reliability the world would be your oyster. To this end, I have achieved three goals with this dissertation, to develop a model to predict future short term prices (direction and magnitude), to effectively test this by generating consistent profits utilizing a trading model developed for this purpose, and to write a paper that anyone with …
Global Optimized Isothermal And Nonlinear Models Of Earth’S Standard Atmosphere, Nihad E. Daidzic, Ph.D.,
Global Optimized Isothermal And Nonlinear Models Of Earth’S Standard Atmosphere, Nihad E. Daidzic, Ph.D.,
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Both, a global isothermal temperature model and a nonlinear quadratic temperature model of the ISA was developed and presented here. Constrained optimization techniques in conjunction with the least-square-root approximations were used to design best-fit isothermal models for ISA pressure and density changes up to 47 geopotential km for NLPAM, and 86 orthometric km for ISOAM respectively. The mass of the dry atmosphere and the relevant fractional-mass scale heights have been computed utilizing the very accurate eight-point Gauss-Legendre numerical quadrature for both ISOAM and NLPAM. Both, the ISOAM and the NLPAM represent viable alternatives to ISA in many practical applications and …
Time Integration Methods Of Fundamental Solutions And Approximate Fundamental Solutions For Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Corey Leon Jones
Time Integration Methods Of Fundamental Solutions And Approximate Fundamental Solutions For Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Corey Leon Jones
Dissertations
A time-dependent method is coupled with the Method of Approximate Particular Solutions (MAPS) of Delta-shaped basis functions, the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS), and the Method of Approximate Fundamental Solutions (MAFS) to solve a second order nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) on regular and irregular shaped domains. The nonlinear PDE boundary value problem is first transformed into a time-dependent quasilinear problem by introducing a fictitious time. Forward Euler integration is then used to ultimately convert the problem into a sequence of time-dependent linear nonhomogeneous modified Helmholtz boundary value problems on which the superposition principle is applied to split the …
Development Of Analytical Sensitivity Analysis For Ahp Applications, Marie L. Ivanco
Development Of Analytical Sensitivity Analysis For Ahp Applications, Marie L. Ivanco
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Decision makers often face complex problems, which can seldom be addressed without the use of structured analytical models. Mathematical models have been developed over the last 50 years to streamline and facilitate decision making activities. The Analytic Hierarchy Process constitutes one of the most utilized Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Methods. While AHP has been thoroughly researched and applied, the method still shows limitations in terms of integrating profile disparities of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). This thesis develops an analytical sensitivity analysis method for AHP based on local partial derivatives to address these limitations. Four examples are presented to demonstrate and validate …
Key Factors Driving Personnel Downsizing In Multinational Military Organizations, Ilksen Gorkem, Resit Unal, Pilar Pazos
Key Factors Driving Personnel Downsizing In Multinational Military Organizations, Ilksen Gorkem, Resit Unal, Pilar Pazos
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Although downsizing has long been a topic of research in traditional organizations, there are very few studies of this phenomenon in military contexts. As a result, we have little understanding of the key factors that drive personnel downsizing in military setting. This study contributes to our understanding of key factors that drive personnel downsizing in military organizations and whether those factors may differ across NATO nations’ cultural clusters. The theoretical framework for this study was built from studies in non-military contexts and adapted to fit the military environment.
This research relies on historical data from one of the largest multinational …

Distance In Matrices And Their Applications To Fuzzy Models And Neutrosophic Models, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this book authors for the first time introduce the notion of distance between any two m n matrices. If the distance is 0 or m n there is nothing interesting. When the distance happens to be a value t; 0 < t < m n the study is both innovating and interesting. The three cases of study which is carried out in this book are 1. If the difference between two square matrices is large, will it imply the eigen values and eigen vectors of those matrices are distinct? Several open conjectures in this direction are given. 2. The difference between parity check matrix and the generator matrix for the same C(n, k) code is studied. This will help in detecting errors in storage systems as well as in cryptography.

Numerical Analysis And Design Optimization Of Organic Bulk Hetero-Junction Solar Cells Using The Mixed Finite Element And Arc-Length Methods, James L. Dean
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Due to the high coupling and non-linear nature of the semiconductor equations, numerical stability becomes a major problem when using a purely Newtonian numerical method in solving these equations. Presented is a robust mixed finite element formulation with application for organic solar cell devices that incorporates the arc-length predictor-corrector method to bypass such stability issues. The simulated device represents a multilayered solar cell using organic bulk hetero-junction materials including donor materials Poly[2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl[4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4- b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl]] (PCPDTBT) and poly 3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with acceptor fullerene materials [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the photoactive …

The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray
The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The formal Laplace-Borel transform of an analytic integral operator, known as a Fliess operator, is defined and developed. Then, in conjunction with the composition product over formal power series, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is shown to provide an isomorphism between the semigroup of all Fliess operators under operator composition and the semigroup of all locally convergent formal power series under the composition product. Finally, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is applied in a systems theory setting to explicitly derive the relationship between the formal Laplace transform of the input and output functions of a Fliess operator. This gives a compact interpretation …

A Study Of The Interface Between A Turbulent Boundary Layer And The Irrotational Free Stream, Shih-Chao Lin
A Study Of The Interface Between A Turbulent Boundary Layer And The Irrotational Free Stream, Shih-Chao Lin
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the events which occur at the interface between a turbulent boundary layer and the irrotational free stream. By assuming the streamwise velocity component of this interface to be constant and that the interface is uncontorted initially, the solution to the equations of motion is used to derive the position functions of a point element on the interface. This analysis is restricted to a fully developed incompressible turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient. Vertical velocity disturbances which are periodic in the spanwise direction and restricted to small streamwise domains are assumed.

An Application Of Global Optimization Algorithm For Modal Parameter Identification, Chung-Men Chen
An Application Of Global Optimization Algorithm For Modal Parameter Identification, Chung-Men Chen
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Single-mode projection filters for modal parameter identification for flexible structures are introduced. An effective two-dimensional global optimization method using interval analysis is combined with the projection filters to facilitate identification for modal frequency and damping. A numerical simulation of a ten-mode structure is presented to illustrate the feasibility of the new method. The projection filters are practical for parallel processing implementation.
