Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa
Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa
MPP Published Research
In this paper we would like to attempt to shed some light on the way in which diagrams enter into the practice of ancient Greek geometrical analysis. To this end, we will first distinguish two main forms of this practice, i.e., trans-configurational and intra-configurational. We will then argue that, while in the former diagrams enter in the proof essentially in the same way (mutatis mutandis) they enter in canonical synthetic demonstrations, in the latter, they take part in the analytic argument in a specific way, which has no correlation in other aspects of classical geometry. In intra-configurational analysis, diagrams represent …

Analysis, Constructions And Diagrams In Classical Geometry, Marco Panza

Greek ancient and early modern geometry necessarily uses diagrams. Among other things, these enter geometrical analysis. The paper distinguishes two sorts of geometrical analysis and shows that in one of them, dubbed “intra-confgurational” analysis, some diagrams necessarily enter as outcomes of a purely material gesture, namely not as result of a codifed constructive procedure, but as result of a free-hand drawing.

Dupin Submanifolds In Lie Sphere Geometry (Updated Version), Thomas E. Cecil, Shiing-Shen Chern
Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship
A hypersurface Mn-1 in Euclidean space En is proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on Mn-1, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf of its principal foliation. This paper was originally published in 1989 (see Comments below), and it develops a method for the local study of proper Dupin hypersurfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry using moving frames. This method has been effective in obtaining several classification theorems of proper Dupin hypersurfaces since that time. This updated version of the paper contains the original exposition together …
Intrinsic Curvature For Schemes, Pat Lank
Intrinsic Curvature For Schemes, Pat Lank
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This thesis develops an algebraic analog of psuedo-Riemannian geometry for relative schemes whose cotangent sheaf is finite locally free. It is a generalization of the algebraic differential calculus proposed by Dr. Ernst Kunz in an unpublished manuscript to the non-affine case. These analogs include the psuedo-Riemannian metric, Levi-Civit´a connection, curvature, and various existence theorems.
Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton
Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
We consider conformal actions of the finite group G on a closed Riemann surface S, as well as algebraic actions of G on smooth, complete, algebraic curves over an arbitrary, algebraically closed field. There are several notions of equivalence of actions, the most studied of which is topological equivalence, because of its close relationship to the branch locus of moduli space. A second important equivalence relation is that induced by representation of G on spaces of holomorphic q-differentials. The notion of topological equivalence does not work well in positive characteristic. We shall discuss an alternative to topological equivalence, …
Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya
Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …
Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen
Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In recent work, two new cohomologies were introduced for almost complex manifolds: the so-called J-cohomology and N-cohomology [CKT17]. For the case of integrable (complex) structures, the former cohomology was already considered in [DGMS75], and the latter agrees with de Rham cohomology. In this dissertation, using ideas from [CW18], we introduce spectral sequences for these two cohomologies, showing the two cohomologies have natural bigradings. We show the spectral sequence for the J-cohomology converges at the second page whenever the almost complex structure is integrable, and explain how both fit in a natural diagram involving Bott-Chern cohomology and the Frolicher spectral sequence. …

SURF Posters and Papers
The de Rham cohomology of a manifold is a homotopy invariant that expresses basic topological information about smooth manifolds. The q-th de Rham cohomology of the n-dimensional Euclidean space is the vector space defined by the closed q-forms over the exact q-forms. Furthermore, the support of a continuous function f on a topological space X is the closure of the set on which f is nonzero. The result of restricting the definition of the de Rham cohomology to functions with compact support is called the de Rham cohomology with compact support, or the compact cohomology. The concept of cohomology can …

This paper will be on hyperbolic reflections and triangle groups. We will compare hyperbolic reflection groups to Euclidean reflection groups. The goal of this project is to give a clear exposition of the geometric, algebraic, and number theoretic properties of Euclidean and hyperbolic reflection groups.
An Analysis And Comparison Of Knot Polynomials, Hannah Steinhauer
An Analysis And Comparison Of Knot Polynomials, Hannah Steinhauer
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Knot polynomials are polynomial equations that are assigned to knot projections based on the mathematical properties of the knots. They are also invariants, or properties of knots that do not change under ambient isotopy. In other words, given an invariant α for a knot K, α is the same for any projection of K. We will define these knot polynomials and explain the processes by which one finds them for a given knot projection. We will also compare the relative usefulness of these polynomials.

Pascal's Mystic Hexagon In Tropical Geometry, Hanna Hoffman
HMC Senior Theses
Pascal's mystic hexagon is a theorem from projective geometry. Given six points in the projective plane, we can construct three points by extending opposite sides of the hexagon. These three points are collinear if and only if the six original points lie on a nondegenerate conic. We attempt to prove this theorem in the tropical plane.

Here we provide a method for comparing geometric objects. Two objects of interest are embedded into an infinite dimensional Hilbert space using their Laplacian eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, truncated to a finite dimensional Euclidean space, where correspondences between the objects are searched for and voted on. To simplify correspondence finding, we propose using several geometric invariants to reduce the necessary computations. This method improves on voting methods by identifying isometric regions including shapes of genus greater than 0 and dimension greater than 3, as well as almost retaining isometry.
Harmonic Morphisms With One-Dimensional Fibres And Milnor Fibrations, Murphy Griffin
Harmonic Morphisms With One-Dimensional Fibres And Milnor Fibrations, Murphy Griffin
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We study a problem at the intersection of harmonic morphisms and real analytic Milnor fibrations. Baird and Ou establish that a harmonic morphism from G: \mathbb{R}^m \setminus V_G \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n\setminus \{0\} defined by homogeneous polynomials of order p retracts to a harmonic morphism \psi|: S^{m-1} \setminus K_\epsilon \rightarrow S^{n-1} that induces a Milnor fibration over the sphere. In seeking to relax the homogeneity assumption on the map G, we determine that the only harmonic morphism $\varphi: \mathbb{R}^m \setminus V_G \rightarrow S^{m-1}\K_\epsilon$ that preserves \arg G is radial projection. Due to this limitation, we confirm Baird and Ou's result, yet establish …

Dense Geometry Of Music And Visual Arts: Vanishing Points, Continuous Tonnetz, And Theremin Performance, Maria Mannone, Irene Iaccarino, Rosanna Iembo
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
The dualism between continuous and discrete is relevant in music theory as well as in performance practice of musical instruments. Geometry has been used since longtime to represent relationships between notes and chords in tonal system. Moreover, in the field of mathematics itself, it has been shown that the continuity of real numbers can arise from geometrical observations and reasoning. Here, we consider a geometrical approach to generalize representations used in music theory introducing continuous pitch. Such a theoretical framework can be applied to instrument playing where continuous pitch can be naturally performed. Geometry and visual representations of concepts of …

Enthymemathical Proofs And Canonical Proofs In Euclid’S Plane Geometry, Abel Lassalle, Marco Panza

Since the application of Postulate I.2 in Euclid’s Elements is not uniform, one could wonder in what way should it be applied in Euclid’s plane geometry. Besides legitimizing questions like this from the perspective of a philosophy of mathematical practice, we sketch a general perspective of conceptual analysis of mathematical texts, which involves an extended notion of mathematical theory as system of authorizations, and an audience-dependent notion of proof.
The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter
The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Within an n-dimensional unit cube, a number of k-dimensional simplices can be formed whose vertices are the vertices of the n-cube. In this thesis, we analyze the average measure of a k-simplex in the n-cube. We develop exact equations for the average measure when k = 1, 2, and 3. Then we generate data for these cases and conjecture that their averages appear to approach nk/2 times some constant. Using the convergence of Bernstein polynomials and a k-simplex Bernstein generalization, we prove the conjecture is true for the 1-simplex and 2-simplex cases. We then develop a generalized formula for …

Branching Matrices For The Automorphism Group Lattice Of A Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
Let S be a Riemann surface and G a large subgroup of Aut(S) (Aut(S) may be unknown). We are particularly interested in regular n-gonal surfaces, i.e., the quotient surface S/G (and hence S/Aut(S)) has genus zero. For various H the ramification information of the branched coverings S/K -> S/H may be captured in a matrix. The ramification information, in particular strong branching, may be then be used in analyzing the structure of Aut(S). The ramification information is conjugation invariant so the matrix's rows and columns may be indexed by conjugacy classes of subgroups. The only required …

Geometric Serendipity, Dakota Becker
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
The central focus of my practice is the serendipitous exploration into geometry, symmetry, design, and color. I have found more and more that the affinity I have for hard-edge geometric abstraction is a deeper reflection of the way in which I process my thoughts and surroundings. In the past year, I have sought to challenge myself by questioning the core of my practice and pushing it to go beyond its individual elements. In this way, I seek to create work that is more than its parts. As a result, I have become more purposeful with my designs and push both …
Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker
Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker
Publications and Research
We introduce a unified mathematical framework that elegantly describes minimally supersymmetry gauge theories in even dimensions, ranging from six dimensions to zero dimensions, and their dualities. This approach combines and extends recent developments on graded quivers with potentials, higher Ginzburg algebras, and higher cluster categories (also known as m-cluster categories). Quiver mutations studied in the context of mathematics precisely correspond to the order-(m + 1) dualities of the gauge theories. Our work indicates that these equivalences of quiver gauge theories sit inside an infinite family of such generalized dualities.

A Journey To The Adic World, Fayadh Kadhem
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The first idea of this research was to study a topic that is related to both Algebra and Topology and explore a tool that connects them together. That was the entrance for me to the “adic world”. What was needed were some important concepts from Algebra and Topology, and so they are treated in the first two chapters.
The reader is assumed to be familiar with Abstract Algebra and Topology, especially with Ring theory and basics of Point-set Topology.
The thesis consists of a motivation and four chapters, the third and the fourth being the main ones. In the third …

A bipolar single-valued neutrosophic (BSVN) graph structure is a generalization of a bipolar fuzzy graph. In this research paper, we present certain concepts of BSVN graph structures. We describe some operations on BSVN graph structures and elaborate on these with examples. Moreover, we investigate some related properties of these operations.

Assessment plays a necessary role in the high school mathematics classroom, and testing is a major part of assessment. Students often struggle with mathematics tests and examinations due to math and test anxiety, a lack of student learning, and insufficient and inefficient student preparation. Practice tests, teacher-created review sheets, and student-created test sheets are ways in which teachers can help increase student performance, while ridding these detrimental factors. Student-created test sheets appear to be the most efficient strategy, and this research study examines the effects of their use in a high school mathematics classroom.

Classification Of Rectifying Space-Like Submanifolds In Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces, Bang Yen Chan, Yun Myung Oh

The notions of rectifying subspaces and of rectifying submanifolds were introduced in [B.-Y. Chen, Int. Electron. J. Geom 9 (2016), no. 2, 1–8]. More precisely, a submanifold in a Euclidean m-space Em is called a rectifying submanifold if its position vector field always lies in its rectifying subspace. Several fundamental properties and classification of rectifying submanifolds in Euclidean space were obtained in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.]. In this present article, we extend the results in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.] to rectifying space- like submanifolds in a pseudo-Euclidean space with arbitrary codimension. In particular, we completely classify all rectifying space-like submanifolds …

A book representation of a graph is a particular way of embedding a graph in three dimensional space so that the vertices lie on a circle and the edges are chords on disjoint topological disks. We describe a set of operations on book representations that preserves ambient isotopy, and apply these operations to K6, the complete graph with six vertices. We prove there are exactly 59 distinct book representations for K6, and we identify the number and type of knotted and linked cycles in each representation. We show that book representations of K6 contain between one and seven links, and …

Studies of curves in 3D-space have been developed by many geometers and it is known that any regular curve in 3D space is completely determined by its curvature and torsion, up to position. Many results have been found to characterize various types of space curves in terms of conditions on the ratio of torsion to curvature. Under an extracondition on the constant curvature, Y.L. Seo and Y. M. Oh found the series solution when the ratio of torsion to curvature is a linear function. Furthermore, this solution is known to be a rectifying curve by B. Y. Chen’s work. This …
