Random network coding is the most effcient way to send data across a network, but it is very susceptible to errors and erasures. In 2008, Kotter and Kschischang introduced subspace codes as an algebraic approach to error correcting in random network coding. Since this paper, there has been much work in constructing large subspace codes, as well as exploring the properties of such codes. This dissertation explores properties of one particular construction and introduces a new construction for subspace codes. We begin by exploring properties of irreducible cyclic orbit codes, which were introduced in 2011 by Rosenthal et al. As …

Free Resolutions Associated To Representable Matroids, Nicholas D. Armenoff

As a matroid is naturally a simplicial complex, one can study its combinatorial properties via the associated Stanley-Reisner ideal and its corresponding free resolution. Using results by Johnsen and Verdure, we prove that a matroid is the dual to a perfect matroid design if and only if its corresponding Stanley-Reisner ideal has a pure free resolution, and, motivated by applications to their generalized Hamming weights, characterize free resolutions corresponding to the vector matroids of the parity check matrices of Reed-Solomon codes and certain BCH codes. Furthermore, using an inductive mapping cone argument, we construct a cellular resolution for the matroid …

Since the 1970's, great interest has been taken in the study of pure O-sequences, which, due to Macaulay's theory of inverse systems, have a bijective correspondence to the Hilbert functions of Artinian level monomial algebras. Much progress has been made in classifying these according to their shape. Macaulay's theorem immediately gives us that all Artinian algebras in two variables have unimodal Hilbert functions. Furthermore, it has been shown that all Artinian level monomial algebras of type two in three variables have unimodal Hilbert functions. This thesis introduces a new enhancement for virtual birack counting invariants. We first introduce knots and other general types of knots (oriented knots, framed knots, racks, and biracks). Then we’ll discuss the methods, knot invariants, mathematicians use to identify whether two knots are different. Next we’ll look at knots with virtual crossings and knots with a good involution. Finally, we introduce a new symmetric enhancement for virtual birack counting invariants and provide an example.

Weak Parallelogram Laws On Banach Spaces And Applications To Prediction, William T. Ross, R. Cheng

This paper concerns a family of weak parallelogram laws for Banach spaces. It is shown that the familiar Lebesgue spaces satisfy a range of these inequalities. Connections are made to basic geometric ideas, such as smoothness, convexity, and Pythagorean-type theorems. The results are applied to the linear prediction of random processes spanning a Banach space. In particular, the weak parallelogram laws furnish coefficient growth estimates, Baxter-type inequalities, and criteria for regularity.

We study natural bases for two constructions of the irreducible representation of the symmetric group corresponding to [n; n; n]: the reduced web basis associated to Kuperberg's combinatorial description of the spider category; and the left cell basis for the left cell construction of Kazhdan and Lusztig. In the case of [n; n], the spider category is the Temperley-Lieb category; reduced webs correspond to planar matchings, which are equivalent to left cell bases. Algorithms to decide isomorphism of modules have been honed continually over the last 30 years, and their range of applicability has been extended to include modules over a wide range of rings. Highly efficient computer implementations of these algorithms form the bedrock of systems such as GAP and MAGMA, at least in regard to computations with groups and algebras. By contrast, the fundamental problem of testing for isomorphism between other types of algebraic structures -- such as groups, and almost any type of algebra -- seems today as intractable as ever. In this paper we introduce for the first time a new type of structures, called (T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structures, presented from a neutrosophic logic perspective, and we show particular cases of such structures in geometry and in algebra. In any field of knowledge, each structure is composed from two parts: a space, and a set of axioms (or laws) acting (governing) on it. If the space, or at least one of its axioms (laws), has some indeterminacy, that structure is a (T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structure.

In this paper we provide a study of quaternionic inner product spaces. This includes ortho-complemented subspaces, fundamental decompositions as well as a number of results of topological nature. Our main purpose is to show that a closed uniformly positive subspace in a quaternionic Krein space is ortho-complemented, and this leads to our choice of the results presented in the paper.

This honors thesis presents the Hankel transform on an integer sequence, a function with colorful mathematical history and rich theoretical background. We then introduce a matricial Toeplitz transform that parallels some of most famous qualities of the Hankel transform, especially when in consideration of popular sequences like the Fibonacci numbers. The result is a characterization of the injectivity of this new function, a description of some of its interesting behaviors, and a discussion of a few new Fibonacci identities.

The Hardy spaces H2(B) and H2(H+), where B and H+ denote, respectively, the open unit ball of the quaternions and the half space of quaternions with positive real part, as well as Blaschke products, have been intensively studied in a series of papers where they are used as a tool to prove other results in Schur analysis. We study several aspects concerning slice regular functions mapping the quaternionic open unit ball B into itself. We characterize these functions in terms of their Taylor coefficients at the origin and identify them as contractive multipliers of the Hardy space H2(B). In addition, we formulate and solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the class of such functions presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and for the uniqueness of a solution. Finally, we describe all solutions to the problem in the indeterminate case.

We study infinite products of reproducing kernels with view to their use in dynamics (of iterated function systems), in harmonic analysis, and in stochastic processes. On the way, we construct a new family of representations of the Cuntz relations. Then, using these representations we associate a fixed filled Julia set with a Hilbert space. This is based on analysis and conformal geometry of a fixed rational mapping R in one complex variable, and its iterations.
