We propose a combinatorial approach built on Grenander’s pattern theory to generate semantic interpretations of video events of human activities. The basic units of representations, termed generators, are linked with each other using pairwise connections, termed bonds, that satisfy predefined relations. Different generators are specified for different levels, from (image) features at the bottom level to (human) actions at the highest, providing a rich representation of items in a scene. The resulting configurations of connected generators provide scene interpretations; the inference goal is to parse given video data and generate high-probability configurations. A variety of factors influence what teaching strategies an educator uses. I analyze survey responses from algebra teachers in Scotland and Appalachia America to discover how a teacher's perception of these factors, particularly their view of mathematics itself, determines the pedagogical strategies employed in the classroom.

In applied linear algebra, the term frame is used to refer to a redundant or linearly dependent coordinate system. The concept was introduced in the study of Fourier series and is pertinent in signal processing, where the reconstruction property for finite frames allows for redundant transmission of data to guard against losses due to noise. We give a brief introduction to the theory of finite frames in Section 1, including the major results that allow for the easy construction and description of frames. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between student success in calculus and student understanding of function. Student understanding of function was measured using two questionnaires, one of which is a modification of an existing measure based on APOS theory. The other I developed with items from the concept image literature. The participants of this study were 116 high school students who were enrolled in a first-year calculus course. The results of the questionnaires were aligned to course exam scores to determine connections between function understanding and rate of success in calculus.

The main goal of this dissertation is to explain a precise sense in which Knörrer periodicity in commutative algebra is a manifestation of Bott periodicity in topological K-theory. In Chapter 2, we motivate this project with a proof of the existence of an 8-periodic version of Knörrer periodicity for hypersurfaces defined over the real numbers. The 2- and 8-periodic versions of Knörrer periodicity for complex and real hypersurfaces, respectively, mirror the 2- and 8-periodic versions of Bott periodicity in KU- and KO-theory. We develop the property of Invariant Basis Number (IBN) in the context of C*-algebras and their Hilbert modules. A complete K-theoretic characterization of C*- algebras with IBN is given. A scheme for classifying C*-algebras which do not have IBN is given and we prove that all such classes are realized. We investigate the invariance of IBN, or lack thereof, under common C*-algebraic construction and perturbation techniques. Finally, applications of Invariant Basis Number to the study of C*-dynamical systems and the classification program are investigated.

Most of the work done in differential equations is dependent on the use of many methods to solve particular types of equations. We define a free holomorphic function to be a function that is locally, with respect to the free topology, a bounded nc-function. We prove that free holomorphic functions are the functions that are locally uniformly approximable by free polynomials. We prove a realization formula and an Oka-Weil theorem for free analytic functions.

My Math GPS: Elementary Algebra Guided Problem Solving is a textbook that aligns to the CUNY Elementary Algebra Learning Objectives that are tested on the CUNY Elementary Algebra Final Exam (CEAFE). This book contextualizes arithmetic skills into Elementary Algebra content using a problem-solving pedagogy. Classroom assessments and online homework are available from the authors. In a paper to appear in PRIMUS, this textbook and accompanying pedagogy showed significant increases in learning outcomes.

This thesis consists of two parts:
1) Polynomial growth of Betti sequences over local rings (Chapter 2),
2) Connected sums of Gorenstein rings (Chapter 3).
Chapter 1 gives an introduction for the two topics discussed in this thesis.
The first part of the thesis deals with modules over complete intersections using free resolutions. The asymptotic patterns of the Betti sequences of the finitely generated modules over a local ring R reflect and affect the singularity of R. We follow the lead of Bocci and Chiantini and show how differences in the invariant alpha can be used to classify certain classes of subschemes of P^3. Specifically, we will seek to classify arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3 in the manner Bocci and Chiantini classified points in P^2. The first section will seek to motivate our consideration of the invariant alpha by relating it to the Hilbert function and gamma, following the work of Bocci and Chiantini, and Dumnicki, et. al. In the classical case we make use of Pells equation to compute units in the ring OF. Consider the parallel to the classical case and the quadratic field extension that creates the ring OK. We use the generalized Pell's equation to find the units in this ring since they are solutions. Through the use of continued fractions we may further characterize this ring and compute its units.

An important problem in algebraic combinatorics is finding expansions of products of symmetric functions as sums of symmetric functions. Schur functions form a well-known basis for the ring of symmetric functions. The Littlewood-Richardson rule was introduced to expand the product of two Schur functions as a positive sum of Schur functions. Remmel and Whitney introduced an algorithmic way to find the coefficients of Schur functions appearing in the expansion. Haglund et al. introduced quasisymmetric Schur functions as a refinement of Schur functions. Kravchuk polynomials arise as orthogonal polynomials with respect to the binomial distribution and have numerous applications in harmonic analysis, statistics, coding theory, and quantum probability. The relationship between Kravchuk polynomials and Clifford algebras is multifaceted. In this paper, Kravchuk polynomials are discovered as traces of conjugation operators in Clifford algebras, and appear in Clifford Berezin integrals of Clifford polynomials. Regarding Kravchuk matrices as linear operators on a vector space V, the action induced on the Clifford algebra over V is equivalent to blade conjugation, i.e., reflections across sets of orthogonal hyperplanes. Beginning with a finite-dimensional vector space V equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form Q, we consider the decompositions of elements of the conformal orthogonal group COQ(V), defined as the direct product of the orthogonal group OQ(V) with dilations. Utilizing the correspondence between conformal orthogonal group elements and ``decomposable'' elements of the associated Clifford algebra, ClQ(V), a decomposition algorithm is developed. Preliminary results on complexity reductions that can be realized passing from additive to multiplicative representations of invertible elements are also presented with examples. The $n-dimensional hypercube, or n-cube, is the Cayley graph of the Abelian group Z2n. A number of combinatorially-interesting groups and semigroups arise from modified hypercubes. The inherent combinatorial properties of these groups and semigroups make them useful in a number of contexts, including coding theory, graph theory, stochastic processes, and even quantum mechanics. In this paper, particular groups and semigroups whose Cayley graphs are generalizations of hypercubes are described, and their irreducible representations are characterized. A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function n↦r(n) from Z into Cs×s is positive definite if and only there exists a Cs×s-valued positive measure dμ on [0,2π] such that r(n)=∫2π0eintdμ(t)for n∈Z. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We study in great detail the case of positive definite functions.

We introduce algebras which are inductive limits of Banach spaces and carry inequalities which are counterparts of the inequality for the norm in a Banach algebra. We then define an associated Wiener algebra, and prove the corresponding version of the well-known Wiener theorem. Finally, we consider factorization theory in these algebra, and in particular, in the associated Wiener algebra.

We study a class of determinantal ideals called skew tableau ideals, which are generated by t x t minors in a subset of a symmetric matrix of indeterminates. The initial ideals have been studied in the 2 x 2 case by Corso, Nagel, Petrovic and Yuen. Using liaison techniques, we have extended their results to include the original determinantal ideals in the 2 x 2 case, as well as special cases of the ideals in the t x t case.
